Discontinued The Grasshopper

Ok, well you can't argue with the folks that have the rose colored glasses on and in the long-run it is probably healthier to be an optimist. So I am going to agree to disagree with you and a few others on this. With all that said I hope the company makes it, because I plan to buy one next year when they are at local retailers.

and they've given us their approximate failure rate.
Which is..? (I'm curious)
I think it's kind of upsetting that if you aren't an FC user and you stumble across this vape, it seems like a goldmine. Unless you are a part of FC, you won't realize that these units can be defective.

I think they said 5% failure rate? I could be wrong.

They reported a 5% failure rate -before- the new parts revisions. Lots of people are saying that can't possibly be right, but I watch reddit and here religiously, and I think I've seen maybe 50 or 60 total posters with Grasshoppers. Lots of those -were- failures, and some were multi failures, and I don't know how to figure that (I suck at math) but 50 out of the estimated 1500 or so shipped, is a 3.3 percent failure rate. And all of those 50 estimated I've seen were not failures. Maybe half, or little more. Again, this is not exhaustive, just done figuring off my memories of what I've read.

While I am WELL aware that the majority of people are here simply because of complaints of failures, meaning it seems like there are more failures than successes, buuuuut that number definitely seems a bit low. If I had a 1/20 chance of getting a disfunctional vape, that's fine. But people have had 4 or so break in a row, and that's 100% failure rate for them. That just doesn't add up.

AJS

So probably not all failures posted on reddit or here, so 5% is possible.

It does make me wonder if they count each failure when a person has multiple failures.

Multiple failures through multiple people shouldn't happen as often as it does with 5%.
1/20, multiple times is soooo low, and through multiple people that's even lower.

It does seem odd to me, but weird statistical anomalies like that -do- happen more often than people think...I really want to believe them, I go back and forth over how I feel about it every day. I know I've seen at least 2, maybe 3 people who had multiple Firefly's break down on them consecutively, so maybe it's just odd coincidence.

I feel ya man. I don't think they're taking a lot of failures into consideration and I think they're trying to stay on the positive side when they're making the statistics.

I really would want to make the plunge on this once everything gets worked out.

I'm in it at this point. I considered getting a refund back in September, but now I've pretty much parted with the money in my mind. Either I get a badass vape, or I don't. Although I feel pretty confident I will get it at -some- point. Maybe not for 3 or 4 more months.

Does anyone know if this can be used as a session style? I don't want to load up a bowl and only be good for 3 hits before it's cashed. I want this to be able to last me while I'm out and about, and not require a refill every few hits. Anyone know?

Well it holds ~0.3g, so long as you have it on a lower temp and don't take huge hits it will last a long time.

If you mean off and on hits throughout the day, youre fine. It depends how much you pack, your temps, and your draw.

So the answer is yes, but that doesn't make this a session device, bc its not

It really depends if you're a sipper or a ripper. I'm a ripper, and I get 2-3 hits per bowl. Sippers have weighed in and get much more than that. In addition to the size of the hit, how long a bowl lasts can also be greatly affected by temperature setting. The hopper is a great compliment to something like a crafty, which offers a larger session-type bowl that takes much longer to heat up, and will cook if you don't finish it.

I'm definitely a ripper, but I get quite a few nice clouds off less herb in the Air. I guess it doesn't REALLY matter as long as those 3 rips are getting me as medicated as 10 thru the Air.

I have both the Air and the Hopper.

The Air definitely lasts through bowls for the whole 10 minute session, but it also vapes uneven (more brown on the top rather than throughout the whole thing... I have the screen in too. anyway!) So the Air is definitely nice. However, the Grasshopper, IMO doesn't really compare fairly. The Air, while convection, seems to have difficulty keeping the heater stabilized, which in turn affects vapor production. Personally have never found using it through waterpipes very good; never enough vapor buildup, etc. However, I really like the ability to just go back to it over a period of 10 minutes and get a good cloud each time.

The Grasshopper is kind of the opposite of a lot of this. Still convection, but using an on demand heater with no problems of temperature stabilization. Technically, the Grasshopper is not a session vape whatsoever, however I still get some good mileage off it with 2 or 3 friends through a waterpipe. I prefer to use the Grasshopper through a waterpipe as well. In public, obviously I'm not going to carry some glass around with me, so it's the only time I really choose to use the Grasshopper without a waterpipe.

In terms of "sipper or ripper" the Grasshopper is still definitely a ripper. I find sipping often leads to the auto-shut off (doesn't detect the draw). I'm ambivalent on this. It's nice to sip the Air, sometimes I can rip it and not have the temperature drop. The Grasshopper, I have to rip it, but it always delivers.

I prefer the Air for vapor without a waterpipe, but every time I would still choose the Grasshopper over the Air (and Flowermate lol). The thing is, with the Grasshopper I can put in a little bit, turn it up to 2.2 and milk my D020 white, and clear it and milk it 3 or 4 times on a single hit. Turn of the button, get 1 or 2 more milked hits. If I'm not high enough, I will turn it up to 3.2 or 3.3 and do the same. The Grasshopper really is a cloud machine, but I think waterpipes really show it off.

The vapor to the Grasshopper is pretty hot, which is why I prefer to use it through waterpipes. But, having also used both the Air and Grasshopper in public, the Grasshopper is still more discreet, easier to manage, and fun as fuck. I mean come on, who doesn't like the idea of taking a nice 15 second hit, holding while you walk past a nice couple, and then cheese and exhale a giant white cloud that makes you feel like you just hit a boxmod.

With all of this said, I still can't decide on a favorite. My order is definitely GH, Air, FM, but I still love to use all of them. Tastewise, the Grasshopper and the Air... maybe the Air has slightly better for the first few, but the Grasshopper keeps it more even throughout. After 5 minutes of a session with the Air, I need to stir it, which really bugs me since the glass is hot, to maintain good quality tasting vapor.

I do still stir the Grasshopper. I think I overpack it, as I have a really bad scale that can't scale anything less than 2 grams. Ridiculous, but it is what it is. So, usually after 3 or 4 hits on 3 or 4 (lol) I will open up the mouthpiece and push the bits on the top down and stir it a bit. I think the Airpath for the Grasshopper can begin to vape uneven if over or significantly under filled.

Sorry for the tangent, I just kept writing things.

Thanks for the comparison!! I prefer bong rips and the gh seems to be just the vape I need for on the go!!

Of course. I really do find the Grasshopper to be a great vaporizer, despite my relatively new and limited knowledge. It may have its downsides, such as you may want extra batteries and an external charger (apparently Hopper Labs will have one), so that you can reduce time the Hopper is spent sitting next to your laptop, but I think it is fair to say that so does every single vaporizer that isn't $500+, and even then, people are going to have their problems with them.

Because of the silicone mouthpiece that comes with the Hopper, it makes it water-pipe available to anybody who has a bowl without a built in screen. For those with dab rig style glass, 18mm and 14mm fit the Grasshopper, but you have to hold it in there. Users with slides, I think 14mm fits, but if you have an 18mm you will need a regular (clean) bowl piece, or an adapter http://image.dhgate.com/0x0/f2/albu/g3/M00/D5/69/rBVaHVSb1eKAW8KmAAE1yKQIsUw981.jpg Like this (sorry, still new to FC formatting).

I have used the Grasshopper on a total of 10 pieces of glass so far! College sure does allow for a wide selection of glass :brow:

Though to be fair, 7 in total were between my suite.

For anyone interested in just how easy and fast it is to use the Grasshopper in public, here's a quick story:

My friend and I went to a smokeshop so he could get a bowl piece. After, we stopped in at Jack in the Box. On the way out to the car, upon leaving the building I turned on the Grasshopper. After about 5 steps I was hitting the unit. By the time we reached his car, no more than 25-30 feet away, I had the unit off, in my pocket, and was exhaling a nice hit above his vehicle. The whole thing took less than a minute, and I was pleasantly high. My friend didn't notice, but just looked at me. :nope:

:lmao:

Does anyone use it on 2 or lower? My buddy got his today, 2 seemed ideal. But I'm a sipper too. I plan to use mine that way when it comes. Curious as to other best practices at lower settings.
