Hopefully they have insurance that covers this loss.

Well apparently they didn't have (working) smoke alarms/sprinklers/detectors....

And fires that smoulder for hours do not create "extremely high temperatures to be reached"...

From my recollection, they operate in a strip mall/commercial complex of some sort? Can anyone confirm?? If so, this would be an automatic alarm and RP -"Responsible Party"would be contacted by dispatch immediately.

So the reason that HL is asking new battery owners to discard them is part of the fire scenario?
I am puzzled by them including the information regarding a new development that WAS going to be disclosed, and released in Dec. Don't we want to clear the backlog, etc., and then innovate?
It is truly a tremendous loss for HL, and I am thankful no person was injured.

Old & In the Way
Really a bad day all around, my sympathy to the HL people and all who worked there.
The loss of 'custom machinery' is going to sting, of course along with all the inventory and rma's on-hand. I hope as things settle out they can retrieve a percentage with remediation.

That HL comes back better and stronger is my sincere hope.

I have to wonder about the batteries. Part of the battery delay was due to mis-labeling -- they were re-labelled. I don't know quite what that entails, but certainly more handling at a minimum. Then, they all came thru with the glossy sleeve, not the matte which had been an earlier change (during a prior GHB2 run).

HL is asking that owners dispose of batteries with glossy label that say, "GHB2 Made in China" which of course my recent purchase batts do say. I have an array that spans years, but all are glossy. One or two say GHB1 Made in China but the older (for me) GHB2's do not.

I can only imagine what the fireworks of 50,000 'venting' batteries might be like (having had an older one go off in my bedroom recently).

Sadly, I have to view this as virtually terminal as far as my Grasshopper reliance goes. Recovery is going to take a long, long time, and that's the optimistic view.

Damn, just when it was back to cruisin' speed with these things. I have 2 working great and one pretty good, but none are good for much with the batteries I have to feed them. Back to hibernation, Grasshoppers.

So, it was an electrical fire for sure... But might have been caused by the batteries? That's some confusing language. Like, there has to be some other information they're leaving out to make that jump in logic, right?

I've been on this train forever, but this is getting to be too much.

I guess everything is going to depend on the extent of the damage, insurance, and the time to recover.

It doesn't specify it was the batteries necessarily either ... electrical could be a light switch ... just saying :)

Edit: I'm going to try all of my other batteries again ... maybe there are a couple gems in there; will be easier to know now with confidence, now that I am pretty confident my Ti Hopper is working as it is supposed to (I'm a good 20-30 bowls down now without a single hiccup)

My SS Hopper went back to not being able to keep up ... the heater just "gives up" ... starts to milk a bong, and then it just gets wispy a few seconds in ... tried all the cleaning etc with no results (the only thing I didn't do is blow more compressed air though ... but that shouldn't be required every 7-8 bowls ... ...)

count me in as someone who seeked out the GH specifically for the ultra-portability, and the fact that it looks like a pen. i.e., it's the perfect size for stealth-on-the-go and I wouldn't change the form factor at all! for completely different models, give 'em a different name, etc. granted, it's less than ideal having pricey custom batts, but I can deal with that for now. hopefully pics later, and still haven't had my first session, but the Cosmos pen case currently has the HT GH with silicon mouthpiece, 4 extra batts, charge cable, doob tube, two-in-one mini funnel (the nose of which fits great between coils of charge cable on opposite side), MFLB cleaning brush, additional cleaning brush and tamping tool from QuickDraw 300 DLX, and tweezers from VaporStar. the whole thing is... half a pocket <3

Ditto. My older batts won’t suffice for much longer. The new ones are in a bag with cat litter (I didn’t bother putting them in separate bags with litter as I’ve used them all several times already without issue - but will heed HL’s advice nonetheless). Dang it! I was falling in love with my Hopper all over again too back from RMA. This incident will set HL back big time at the rate they’ve moved over the years. I too thought we recently were witnessing a turnaround and stabilization milestone. Just glad no one was hurt in the fire and hope no one experiences any hazards with the new batts.

I do think it’s a bit early to blame it on the batts but let’s see if they change or recant their early findings.

Dang it! :bang::peace:

just now reading about the HL fire. wow. it saddens me to learn that. and I just received my first Hopper, delivered on the same day. glad nobody was hurt. had no idea there was a new GH version in the works. I hope they have a full recovery and double their revenue afterwards...

Me neither, your post was the first i've heard of it! Where did you hear that? I was thinking a/c adapter/battery bypass.
They wrote it in the letter that told us about the fire. Which to me seems kinda fishy. All of a sudden there was a new model grasshopper no one had ever heard of that was gonna drop next month???? I’m just saying a fire is a pretty simple way to dissolve a company that is possibly circling a drain. All I know is someone from there should get back to me about the 279.95 I’m owed. Kinda wonder why their site was still accepting sales 8 hours after a company ending fire? Idunno. I’m a bit pessimistic whenever it concerns this company.

Just tried my first of my older batteries that "seemed" ok ... charged fine ... 1st bowl fine ... 2nd bowl flickering blue lights and lacking power; when I put the cell on the charger it reads at ~4V after said 2 bowls, but is unable to actually deliver sufficient power (it must have way too much voltage sag under load so it just doesn't keep up ... hopefully at least 1 of my batteries is good for 3-4 bowls!)

Edit: someone probably lit the fire for the insurance claim! (just kidding .... maybe ... I think ... :hmm:)

Edit Edit: I do really hope this is just a bump though ... and they do recover ...

Ah yes just read it, "the next version"... lol

Can you get a chargeback with your credit card company perhaps?

I’m trying to figure that out. I used a debit card that is linked to my bank account and they processed the payment via their paypal. But it didn’t run through my paypal so I can’t go and start a dispute. That haven’t answered any of my emails or messages on any platform either. I hope they resolve it. I am the type of guy to spend 3 times the amount owed to me on a plane ticket and go figure it out in person.

That basically sounds to me like you paid it in cash essentially. Enjoy your flight, and make sure to take lots of pictures! Also say hello to @slcbdco for me! Maybe you can join him on one of his lunches with the boys!

I was thinking the same thing earlier. They’ve lost some equipment, parts inventory, RMAs, and they essentially have no batteries to speak of now. What’s left? Not much except for insurance assuming they had it. Oh I forget the steel case should be out the door soon (lol).

I too was a bit surprised about a new device dropping next month but I don’t know how that could be as they were still catching up and sounded pretty close though. That’s why I thought a fire may not be so out of the question at this point. I hope it’s not so.

I’m charging my 3 old batts, one of which is good for one rip and the others perhaps a couple of chambers each. Then it’s Hopper hibernation soon, possibly for good. We’ll see...:peace:
