Discontinued The Grasshopper

I agree. There was never any mention of hands and that this was caused by assembly. I would imagine it is left over residual oils from the manufacturing process.

Wait. Are you saying they used their hands while assembling them, and never divulged this to us? Those fucking Assholes!

That's the last straw for me. I'm cancelling my order.

@Ratchett what kind of accessories are you thinking of? Maybe an alternate mouthpiece that's slightly longer and/or has a glass interior?

:ninja:

 Cases, containers, scoops, and picks already in the works :D

I also have a sneaking suspicion that my Silicone Reducer will work perfectly to pair the GH with an 18mm bubbler, but won't know for sure until I get my GH

I apologize if this has been asked already, i actually think it has but i never saw a answer. I am wondering if a aftermarket charger such as the nitecore will be able to charge the Gh's proprietary battery ? I know some have said it is a lipo battery and that the nitecore's will not charge that type of cell.

Other people have supposed that a nitecore would work. Grasshopper also recommended a specific charger to the holiday backers who opted to get their hopper without a charger, the link to it was posted late in the old Grasshopper thread, I don't remember what kind it was. The Grasshopper battery is a li-ion not a lipo

To everyone saying they don't think it's oil from hands do a test for me if you have an enail. With it completely cool, handle the nail a bunch. Unscrew the head and screw it back on and just kinda roll it between your palms or something. Then turn it on and let it heat up and watch for vapor that normally wouldn't be there. I noticed this a long time ago after handling my nail a bit after cleaning.

Does anyone else find humor in the self righteous indignation from some for a product that has only just started shipping (which is based on a single observation/observer)? seems like we would do well for some critical analysis once we get a sample size larger than one (technically 7/8 did not observe this behavior, which is not to say that it wasnt present, just that the local consciousness wasnt aware and did not notice or record this event) .. esp after it has been directly referenced/addressed. If you dont trust Trevor at his word, then youd probably do well not to trust his product either. Should we want to verify, we would probably wait till we can form a base of information to work with and address either as a community, with the company, or both!

So you're new here eh?

I think the "oil from our hands" explanation is total bullshit. Does anyone think that the amount of skin oils that could be transferred by simply handling that tiny heater is enough to make visible vapor for SEVERAL heating cycles?
As long as it can burned off, guess it doesn't really matter, but I don't buy it...

I can make my solo fume by touching the metal in the chamber. I've tested it many times. I'm a bit of a fume freak. I agree with the sentiment of questioning what they're telling us though.

Two production units have shipped. Both report potentially disturbing off-gassing (though clearly we don't know exactly what is happening with these units, yet).

Small sample size? Sure....you can't extrapolate that 100% of GHs will have this issue. (In fact I'm sure none of us at FC would leap to that incorrect conclusion.)

Worth discussing? Absolutely. That's what we do round these parts. (Being alarmed about this subject, and/or potential harm to fellow FCers isn't indignation...it's just concern.)

Humorous? Not to me, but I guess it's a personal decision.

I find the explanation plausible but skepticism is good. I'm equally skeptical that someone did a burnoff and witnessed burnoff vapor for 15 cycles, I wasn't there to witness that either.

We here at FC take pride in our self righteous indignation. We wear it as a badge of honor.

I spent many years in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry.

Frankly, no, I do not find it at all amusing or ironic that people on this board are concerned about the health implications of outgassing and burn-off. And would like to have full disclosure about any components in the vapor path.

If this were an FDA regulated product, do you think that it would receive any less scrutiny? Would you expect that GH labs would be able to get away with not not fully disclosing the exact design and manufacturing process, and 100% of the materials, solvents, etc., used? Would they be able to ship product without extensive testing? Would they be able to assemble these parts without taking whatever means necessary to ensure they were absolutely clean and free of contamination?

At the end of the day, I don't actually see why vaporizers are NOT considered medical devices. Aren't they? Aren't you essentially sucking their output right into your lungs? If they are contaminated with industrial solvents, or whatever, isn't there a potential for injury?

Frankly, we are letting them off lightly. Because we are all paying for the privilege to participate in a clinical trial. Unmonitored, uncontrolled, by people whose qualifications are questionable...but they probably don't have any medical training.

mod note: If you're responding specifically about the GH, carry on. Replies to the issue of whether vaporizers (including the GH) are medical devices belong in Should vaporizers be classed as medical devices?

technically one discussed the off gassing... Midget went right into trying it out and tested the off gassing after he had already vaped with the GH so its not the most accurate off gassing testing

@Mrbinky I couldn't agree more.

It seems strange to me that they don't want to reveal what materials are in the air path. I understand that they don't want to give their secrets aways to other manufacturers but the air path is something that we consumers need to know about. Most other vapes are very open about their air path.

Now that I think about it, even if the burnoff is due to residue from people's fingers...

How do we know what, exactly, those people were handling that day?

Because, that visible vapor probably contains more than just vaporized sweat, body oil and dead skin cells.

We all know that a lot of different stuff can survive being vaporized.

Even if they had just washed their hands, there will be soap and additives (perfume, etc.) in that vapor. If they hadn't washed their hands in a while, there could be literally anything in that vapor.

In my opinion, no vaporizer should require "burn off" after delivery. But, at least, I could "bake" the smell out of my Solo. How do you easily do that with a Grasshopper? What are the official instructions regarding this?

Oh FFS, seriously people. Let's get a few more reports of this supposed offgassing before we start jumping the gun

Where did you find official instructions to burnoff your Solo?

No manufacturer produces an official "burnoff guide" for their vape

My concern would be the LED's/sensor etc in the air path (even if it's below the heating element). So far from use I have no reason to think that anything is cooking that shouldn't be, but I wonder if there's a proper way to test the vapor output.

I happen to have access to a state-of-the-art research lab (mass spectrometers, gas chromatography etc) so I may be able to see if there's any equipment available that could shed some insight. Might have to get a little creative though.

I do believe the team is honest. But independent testing can never hurt. As one of the first to get this product I'm doing my best to be unbiased and objective. I suspect there could be quirks with the initial run (as with any product really), so I'm trying to do some heavy testing and identify them. If problems arise, it'll be a good test of how the Grasshopper team handles it.

Right, and I wouldn't need one for a Solo, because it's kind of obvious. You turn it on maximum, and wait until it doesn't smell anymore.

Will that work for a Grasshopper? Doesn't sound like it would. It sounds like you'd need to blow air through it somehow.

And, it seems to me, that this is something they should be doing for us at the factory, with something designed for that purpose. It would also be an additional way for them to test each unit before shipping it.
