Discontinued The Grasshopper

As some of you know I received a pair of SS hoppers a few days ago. Up until today both had been working perfectly, with the only problem being that one of the two charge cables didn't work out of the box. However just a few minutes ago something strange happened. I rotated the temp dial down to a slightly lower temp and the back end popped open. I was able to get it back together so that it looked perfect, but after a few twists of the dial it popped open again. I don't know how this happened, and haven't heard of it happening before, so for all I know it might just be a fluke. Luckily, the other hopper is still working perfectly so I won't be hopperless.

Does it still work every time you pop it back together?

Are you kidding? You must not be using it right, or perhaps you're not vaping the same herb I use. I have forgotten to turn off my hissing butane torch more than a couple of times after finishing a session with my Vapman. I had to quit locking the flame on for fear of burning my house down, not to mention the frustration of finding you're not ready to go after loading the bowl the next time because the gas has exhausted.

I've been vaping for about a year now. I got the MFLB last year and loved it, thought "I'll never need another vape, the box suits me perfectly". Then I made the tragic mistake of coming to FC to see if I could benefit from the experience of others. The Vapman was mentioned in the MFLB thread and I went to Ebay "just to see" if any were available. I found an auction for the classic, with mica heat shield, at $63 with just seconds left on the clock and made a bid at 65 thinking "heck I'd probably pay $65 to watch pigs fuck if I was good and bored". I didn't expect my bid to hold up but it did.

I loved it even more than the box but was sure I didn't have VAS. I just can't pass up a good bargain I told myself.

The VM changed my life after 40 plus years of combusting (and over consuming just because it was so hard to discreetly get a buzz with the pungent odor, so I made sure I got wasted when the opportunity presented itself). I used to think "if I'm going to get high I might as well get stoned."

I DO NOT have VAS. The Vapman with it's ability to medicate (a little bit) with 25 mg of material is perfect for me and has made me immune.

You would think I learned my lesson but NO, I had to find out if I was doing it right and started reading the Vapman thread. Oops, bad plan; everyone agreed the VM was a great "conduction" vape but "convection" was the real deal. Next thing I know, I'm trying to decide between the Crafty and the Mighty when Mr. Me2 chimes in with something along the lines of "either will be do until the Grasshopper arrives". A week later I've pulled the trigger on the GH and am still pondering which of the S&B devices to get to hold me over until it arrives.

I'm still reading the Mighty and Crafty threads but that's just out of curiosity. I DO NOT have VAS.

Does anyone think I should get both? I mean, I've saved enough to pay for them by just topping off with the .02 gm load instead of rolling another joint . It's found money. Fuck combustion.

I DO NOT have VAS!

Yes this sounds fairly typical, welcome! Now you are home (better take caution if you check out the Zion and log threads dude...)

Interesting, good thing they pushed back dates as we're always seeing new problems here every other day. Better to wait and get a perfect unit I suppose right? Almost getting tired of being optimistic though lol Its gotta be worth the wait looking back several months from now, given the performance, and if they resolve assembly and QC issues we should all be happy for a long time it would seem...

Welcome to the Forums. Seems while you're a long time lurker (and Member) we don't hear much from you.....I hope that's changing?OF

Thanks for the Welcome OZ.

I actually submitted a few posts in the VM thread early on but became concerned when I finally realized that the autofill program on my computer had substituted my real name for my intended username when I first registered.

The laws of the state I live in (Florida), many of my associates, and most of the members of my profession (Pharmacist), including my boss at the time, frown on recreational drug use (except for the drugs they prefer of course). Having my real name out there inhibited my willingness to make candid contributions so I attempted to register under a new name and was banned for duplicate account activity. I took a little while for me to figure out how to explain the error to the moderators but they took care of it when I finally discovered how to make contact.

By that time, I realized there were so many here, like yourself, who not only had vastly more experience but were also very articulate and generous in sharing their knowledge, that I felt making further contributions would be akin to a toddler trying to tell his Grandad (the fishing guide) the proper way to rig baits.

I'm sure I would have continued to lurk except my supplier is out of the top shelf stuff and I am spoiled and am uninterested in Mids, so I turned to America's favorite drug (beer) to relax after a hard day's mental workout. S.N. Torpedos are nice but more than a couple will severely impair your judgement and vastly reduce your inhibitions (two of the main reasons beer is not my favorite relaxation aid) so I lost my head and rambled a bit. Sorry about that and I have no excuse for doing it again now, so perhaps my fishing analogy was spot on.

Apologies for hijacking the thread again but I wanted to thank you for your cordial response. I've read many of your very informative and polite posts and appreciate your generous and worthy contributions to my education.

Perhaps I should go teach my Grandson how to rig baits and continue lurking for now. There's a reason evolution provided me with two ears and eyes but only one tongue.

Security aside, I think that's pretty lame. If you have something to contribute sitting on it just because you think someone else can/will do it better is wrong I think. New views are always useful. Even the clearly wrong ones as long as they're sincere? You got something to contribute? Bring in on! Over time such efforts are sure to improve.......which will benefit us all.

Where will the next generation of fishermen come from if Grandkids have no opinion on rigging bait?

I understand the 'better to keep quiet and let everyone think you're a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt' idea, but I think the Dali Lama summed it up right, 'when you speak you're only repeating what you already know, when you listen is when you have a chance to learn something new'?

Please contribute when you can. Looking forward to those posts, you clearly belong here.

Perhaps you can get some protection by using your boss' name for an account name here?

I think it would be prudent to catalog and track qc so that we don't get to repetitive.

Blue/Red - Sensor fault (inclusive of symptoms)
Hot Clip
Battery Grease
Scratched/Burned Outer Casing
Galled Backend

One offs:
Charging Cable
Popped Backend

I think someone earlier mentioned something about the backend being simple, it's 27 individual pieces. They work in concert to turn the unit on and regulate temperature, we would be remissed to gloss over the amount of engineering poured into such a 'simple' mechanism, qc aside we should continue to be patient, they will do right by those who have bad units as we have seen. But we must also hold hopper labs to the standard they set for themselves.

It seems you are the second reported case of this happening. See quoted post below.

Long story short - I was sitting by the campfire getting ready to enjoy bowl #7 (didn't really have a chance to use it first few days), turned the heat dial up a notch and felt the back end pop open - it's spring loaded and parts went flying. Trevor was very quick to respond and a new hopper is on the way. I do think this is a one off - either a bad crimp at the factory or a bad snap ring, so not too concerned about it at the production level. I was torn on whether to post something or not - in the end I went the vague route because people were expecting updates but I also wanted to give the grasshopper team a chance to respond and to test out their warranty service. Will report back when I get my new hopper.

I do appreciate that they are sending me the replacement unit as well as a prepaid box to ship mine back in. Much better than me having to send mine in first on my own dime. That said - I am not sure if that will be their standard service procedure when there are thousands of hoppers in the wild.

...speaking of cases...what's the fucking holdup with them? :hmm: The final design for the Grasshopper has been in stone for quite some time now.

How hard is it for them to have whoever is manufacturing them to have them ALL done by now?

Even the Ti cases that some of us ordered should be ready to go.

They discovered the cases were scratching hoppers so they need to tweak the design.

Initial impressions of the stainless model. First off flavor is amazing. On par with the thermovape cera, my benchmark for flavor in a portable vape. Second off the mouthpiece does get hot. I'm a regular coffee drinker so I think my lips have a tolerance for heat but this thing gets HOT. It's just tolerable at setting 4, but I had to take my lips off mid draw at setting 5 because it was becoming very uncomfortable. Silicone Mouthpiece is definitely a must for 4 and above. The back end did get slightly warm but not very hot as Ellen and others have mentioned. Certainly not as hot as the mouthpiece does. I've had no problems unscrewing the back end either, thank jah for that. I've gotta say that despite these issues, I think I love this vape lol. Amazing build quality(when you don't get a defective unit) and the size and form factor are just perfect for me. Bottom line, was it worth the wait? For me, thats a yes:tup:
As a matter of interest. As you have used the product when you knew it wasn't what you ordered. Does this mean you decided to commit to buying a second grasshopper before trying it or did they tell you it was ok to use it while you wait for your replacement? I am wondering if that is the case, as it raises the question as to whether they intend to on sell used or repaired units. If they aren't on selling, it then seems likely that someone else has to wait for another unit to be made.

I don't think this is a session type of vaporizer in which you would stay on stand-by with the temperature on. Even if you vape with another person it's an on-demand vape. You click it on and off, before and after each draw. You can't really forget to click it off! Hence, why i'm baffled by the auto-shut off. It's totally uncessasary in this vape or at least put it at 1 minute. I hope they still have the time to change that aspect.

I like to have the freedom to draw slowly or harder.

I would think that the simple answer for those who want to do slow draw sipping on their GH's, is to click it off then back on (an easy double click) every 12 or so seconds. I know it's likely to be a massive inconvenience for some people, but normal people should be able to manage.

I have my own custom made leather wrap around wallet and tobacco pouch. It has 12 pockets and sleeves (including 4 which are accessed through zips when otherwise wrapped/closed), so it can hold everything your average wallet holds, plus comfortably holds 20-30 grms of filthy smoking tobacco, filters, papers, a slim note pad, Grasshopper/pen (which I plan on adapting a small pen tip to, for limited real pen functionality), spare batteries and hopper fuel. It also has a partly concealed GH logo and my Flying crocodile logo.

If you're selling, probably best to speak to mods about manufacturer account - but those are amazing looking!

Any options made from non-animal product materials for the vegetarians in the house? There really should be so many more wallets like this with vape pouches around - this is an exceptional idea!

Have we tested that theory? I ask because it's been reported more than once (by NORMAL people whatever you meant there?) that the GH heater won't stay on unless there's a pretty strong draw. If anyone has been able to do light draws and keep the unit on, please chime in, but the impression was that it won't work that way.

P.S. Nice cases!

I don't agree, folks that don't like this solution are NOT "abnormal".........

It's a work around, which by definition means the unit is not doing something the owner wants? But inferring they are abnormal is not so cool I think. Poor choice of words?

It will work that way for 18 seconds, from what I understand.

Regarding the leather sleeve that comes with the ti; it's useless with the silicon tip installed correct?

The choice of words is fine. Perhaps the meaning that the reader assigns to the words is the problem. I have no control over that.

Normal/average are much the same in the context used. Had I used the word average instead, it is likely that a lot of 'normal' people would have been offended by the implication that they were only average. Lesser of two evils perhaps? This PC shit is really quite tedious at times.

Thanks.
It can be made of pretty much any fabric.
Cheers.

It isn't for everyone. It cost as much as a colored TI GH

It might be tedious, but 'be nice' is the rule around here........

Political correctness: a doctrine which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd from the clean end. The theory is unquestionably well intended. The reality is that the end result is often like bloated software that erodes or extinguishes the benefit &/or value of the function which spurred it.

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you mean. Can you share a picture of what the back end looks like "popped open"?
I can indeed.
ufa37kA.jpg

Does it still work every time you pop it back together?
It does, but as I said it pops open again if i so much as rotate the dial, so it's not really the best idea to try and use it.

It's a massive inconvenience and it can be easily remedy by making the detection more sensitive (lower "delta" temp threshold) so it can detect slow draw or increase the auto-shut off to 30-45 seconds. Both are good solutions.

Edit:I've sent an E-mail to them about it (trevor@grasshoppervape.com). This is the type of thing that can be easily modified, especially increasiing the auto-shut off delay time (no design change, same cost, etc). It would be cool if a few more people would do the same.
