I had some extra rubies from a recent CH order so I decided to replace the (mostly) 3mm borosilicate balls in my PID controlled Elev8r. I dropped in 2 - 4mm rubies to plug the spike holes (I imagine this will vary unit to unit) and then some 3mm rubies up to the screen. I had to drop the temperature to 275°C/527°F and it still hits like a train!

I started with 4mm boro and then went to 3mm boro with a couple 4mm to plug the holes. I've seen some people put a screen at the air intake hole so they can fill the entire heater with 3mm balls but I don't feel the need to go beyond what I've done. I made sure there was just the slightest bit of movement when I put in the rubies and after heat soaking for an hour or so everything had tightened up. My train of thought is that currently the worst that could happen is the balls push the screen out (which has happened with boro when they were really packed) as opposed to cracking the heater if it was completely full.

I highly recommend rubies, they just elev8ted  this vape to another level.

I really like the look of this vape. I noticed though where the two bits mate together the glass has a frosted look. Presumably ground down for a tight fit? So if your not using this through water and those bits are rubbing together during assembly each time, is there a risk of microscopic glass dust particles in the airpath? I guess I could just run in through water to make sure there's no issue!

Nothing to worry about. Ground Glass connections are standard on pretty much EVERYTHING now.

the sick clip holds it in place but without any excess pressure, it's nothing compared to how it is built, it's built to survive if it falls on the table even, but not on the floor...
if you really have worries buy some magnifying glass x60 to see that quartz dust basically never exists there, if something will happen to quartz you will see it IMHO
the quartz is so strong by thermal properties that you can put it in a glass of water after you finished heating it up to 300c or so, crazy ass material lol

Okay, it's a little rustic, but I'm pretty happy with the all-hemp handle I whittled for my DCE. The wood is from a Raspberry Parfait plant from my 2020 harvest, wrapped with hemp twine.

Hey guys. So I picked up a torch driven Elev8r and it just isn't gonna work for me. I've read the entire thread but I skipped all the PID posts naturally. But I absolutely love the feel of the wand so I'd like to pick up a PID hopefully. Is a PID only for bong use? Everybody seems to get it cinched in the coil pretty good, not looking to take it out. So could I heat it up in the coil and then remove with the tongs onto the wand, or does the coil need to be wrapped around it to keep it at temp? Or does the coil just get it to the right temp and then you can just hit it? Whole heap of thanks.

Is a PID only for bong use? ... I use mine on a j-hook, a small bubbler and of course a bong. I tried it on the wand, and it worked, but it was a bit unwieldy for my tastes.

What you are wanting to do with the coil and tongs probably won't work well, you will probably find it takes too long.

Thanks. I don't understand why you say it would work on a J-Hook but not the wand? It's the same process?? Oh wait a minute..........are you saying that it works to get a hit, but the J Hook is just easier to manage hands wise.

If that is in fact the case, could you tell me which way the coil works so I can visualize if I could do it or not? Does the coil need to be wrapped around it to keep it at temp? Or does the coil just get it to the right temp and then you can take it off the coil and just hit it on the hook or wand? Thanks man.

Hey @TeaCup I completely understand about the wand, it's really nice to use with the torched heater, it's my favourite way to use the elev8r too.

The coil really needs to be tight on the heater for it to work properly. It needs the good contact to transfer the heat effectively and that means you can't really remove the heater from the coil for a hit. The wand becomes a bit unwieldy when you need to use both hands and can't easily see the connection point and a hook makes it a bit more manageable.

What are your problems with torching? Maybe we can help you dial that in?

Does the coil need to be wrapped around it to keep it at temp? ... Yes and the tighter, the better, some folk even shim the coil and heater body with screens to increase heat transfer and reduce movement.

(Edit: I just remembered the original version had no nipple--maybe that's what you've got. Still, if the heater is properly fitted to the coil for good heat transfer, it will be difficult to remove the flaming-hot piece.)

The heater has a little nipple on the top of it which threads into the spiral of the coil--you have to screw the heater into or out of the coil for five or six full turns. You'd have to do this while holding it by the taper, since that's the only part exposed, and the whole thing is hot enough to set fire to paper. For all that effort you'd get a brief pull before you had to put it back to reheat it.

Embrace the coil. It is deliriously effective.

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know. Unfortunately that's what I needed to know too, lol.

Yeah, I don't do bongs or desktops. Would've made an exception with this because the PID is such a small footprint, and I love the damn wand and somehow gotta incorporate it in my life.

I've only had it since last weekend but I've exhausted all the ways to hit it. I've used the Big Buddy at 30 seconds, 31, 32, 33.........and so on up to 40 on the first heat soak. I tried hitting just the dimples at first, then tried just slowly going up and down all four sides, then tried twirling it. I've tried a slow pull and faster pulls. And I've tried every kind of heat soak on subsequent hits. I get three type of hits no matter what I try. No vapor, a little vapor, combustion. I have no idea where the middle is, lol!! Oh, and I tried ditching the clock and using the orange flame method.......which I really think needs to be the way if you're torching......the clocks a pain in the ass if you ask me.

Which version do you have? Glass screen or standard? It should be giving you great hits, your technique sounds ok but maybe it needs a bit of dialing in? I aim at the indents hovering over each indent for a second or two then spin to the next and repeat.

I have a glass screen version with a standard screen on top of the glass. I mostly fill the bowl and give it a slight tamp to keep the load in place and angle the wand slightly upward.

Standard.

it needs a bit of dialing in

I feel like I'm not even remotely close to dialing it in. I basically have stop and go. No vapor. Or combustion. Technically, even if the coil worked for my needs, I still don't know if I even like the taste or the vapor signature........because I haven't experienced either yet, lol!

Which is why I mentioned my loading style.... Are you loading enough material and tamping slightly?

It's sealing properly right? If I clip the cold heater onto the wand, cover the intake hole with my finger I can create a pretty strong vacuum. Is that true for you?

Sorry your having trouble with it, it's not usually a fussy vape once you have the heating down.

Do you have the wpa and a j hook you can try with the heater, just for experimentations sake?

Usually I do about the amount I use for my other vapes (Firewood, Tiny, TetraX, etc.). What I haven't done is load a whole heap full.......I figured I shouldn't if I'll combust and ruin alot more than just a normal lode size. Tamped? Hmmm, no. Doesn't seem you would need to tamp if your shaking it between hits, right??

It's sealing properly right?
Just tried, yup, sealed.

Do you have the wpa and a j hook
Yeah, I bought a J Hook with it. I actually specifically bought this because I didn't have any hooks and this is the way I wanted to use it. But I didn't know I'd like the wand so much. I've tried it with the hook and it's the same thing as the wand.

Yeah, I know, lol. I have trouble with every single one of my vapes except the Firewood. I've had a TetraX that I've used every day for 6 months and I still can't get a great hit out of it! It's so depressing, lol.

Somehow somewhere it's gotta be my breath speed. I've used every example of what people on here are doing for heating techniques........but when I take a hit, it's either nothing.................................................................HOLD EVERYTHING, LOL......................we have a liftoff!!!!!

I really don't know what the hell happened right now. I put about double of what I usually do (something tells me your gonna tell me that's it right there, aren't you, lol!) and I heated it like I usually do.......but something happened this time that's never happened in previous times. First of all, I noticed my flame was getting low but I was all ready to go hit wise, and well, you know how that goes when your all prepped up................well, your all prepped up, can't let no low flame get in the way.......so I went forward and torched for 35 seconds! So what happened was this, very quickly the flame started to turn orange and just enveloped everything all orange like it had never before (I'd get an orange and blue mix but never all orange like this one). Was nervous to take a hit and I think I waited 10 or 15 seconds (I think?? lol). I blew it out totally haphazardly because I didn't really expect a hit........and blew out a nice flavorful cloud! I was like, aww come the f on, I get this great hit and I just blew it out of my mouth like it was the last popcorn hit of a bowl!!! That sucks, lol. Did a few more hits of solid enough hits, waited a bit and had another similar session. Musta been the sound of your voice Cheebsy, lol.

Well allrighty, this time I have a full torch! I combined the last two bowl's ABV, it was still only half way and I was still skeptical I could repeat with a stronger flame. 35 seconds, waited 20 seconds to take a hit (I think).............nice hit!! Heated another 15 (or was it 20?), can't remember if I waited to take a hit......this time a lunger!!!! Very nice!! I got one last test next. Same process. Full new fresh bowl. Fingers crossed.

Ok, I geared a little to caution just incase. Got two nice first hits. Ok, I think were on! I think from here I can tweak things now. Definitely the sound of your voice, lol. I'm gonna hit you up when it's time to tackle my TetraX Cheebsy, lol!!! I don't know what you did, but it worked!! Oh yeah, I doubled the load......forgot that part!

And one last hit. Thought I maybe had a spent bowl so heated it up 20 seconds and I just completely gagged up my hit, eyes might be crosseyed, but I can't see through the tears steaming down my face, lol. Didn't taste any char. Quickly dumped it in my palm.......medium brown, if that. Yeah, I think I can tweak it from here! Thanks man, moral support, I like that. 🍻

Fantastic news man! I love that 👍

Yeah, I was thinking you may not have had enough in the bowl. When I say tamped, it's more of a seating really. Just to ensure the load doesn't touch the heater whilst it's at its hottest. I always shake to stir when using the wand but subsequent hits are fine without seating the load. The orange of the heater is quite specific and pay attention to it but rely on counting or a timer while your getting to know it, it won't take too long with practice though.

Have fun dialing it in, I saw your post in the anvil thread and hoped you would post here.

Yeah...............well so do I, lol!

Since then, I've passed one of the last two remaining tests. I put it down for about 8 whole minutes before I went about my day, waiting for the evening when I do the majority of my vaping. But I HAD to try the real reason I got it........the J-Hook! Couldn't wait till the evening. 35 seconds, medium draw strength 5 seconds after torching............ohhhhhhh man......niiiiice. Sweet. One last test tonight. It'll be hours after my "practicing" and I'll be seated at my normal vape spot. This will be the final everything, lol.

I saw your post in the anvil thread and hoped you would post here.
Man, this really makes everything so much sweeter now. I mentally took ownership of the Anvil when I was failing at this, so now I'll have both. And guess what, I now have a J-hook for that said Anvil!

Many, many many thanks my man.

Flying colors last night. 👍 And flying colors this morning. 👍

Have twice thought I may have combusted but I don't think so. I'm not used to ABV this dark, lol,......I took a picture just in case I wanna ask peeps later on. The J-Hook's hitability factor is pretty easy to see why so many people like 'em. It's pretty bad ass actually. REALLLLY glad I learned this before my Anvil gets here!

Hi
After 1,5 year of torching my elev8r , i buy a enail from Aliexpress, ( ltq vapor: 68€), and i put it on and whaoo, it's very nice.
I try with 3 mm boro beads but i don't like the restricted airflow, i prefer with nothing and keep this opening airflow who's close to perfect for me.
I set it at 575 and wait about 5 minutes, and go for taste and cloud.
It will be difficult to find better vape at this price.
Good vape to all
