Batch 3 Status Report
All ten coils formed. I am waiting on coil raw material at this point, so I'm coiled out. Should arrive way before I even start the next batch. Cut all switch boxes, and I am reminded how much easier it is not to do a matching switch box. I wound up with a few, but most will get contrasting walnut. I did find a really nice walnut board to cut the switchboxes from.
I then cut each switchbox to length, paired it with a unit. After all 10 were cut (plus a few extras), I did the final *pairing*, or where you chisel, sand, file, to get the switch box to fit. At this point the switchboxes are all a hair big, after pre-assembly, they'll get planed / sanded down to size. But before pre-assembly, I have to drill out the switchbox, virutally making it hollow, with another hole for the actual switch. That little switch you see protrude barely a 3/32nds, is very large inside, extending to almost the back of the switch box. Makes it tougher to wire up, but I like the low profile.
After drilling, it's time to pre-assemble the switchbox to the unit, and cut holes for wires. Once that happens, I can plane / sand to a perfect fit, then finish with beeswax before taking apart and installing all the electronic stuff (battery terminals, coil, switch - that's it).
If I can get beeswax on all units tomorrow, I'm in good shape for an end of week, or to on the safe side, next Monday shipping. For right now, that's the pace. All gains from here on in will be smaller than the initial shop improvements.
The system has been dialed in!
One more thing:
Occasionally a session will lag behind what I've now gotten used to. It's usually one of three things. Most often I was in a rush and didn't dry the herb out quite enough (#2). My absolute best, most consistent, and easily achieved results come when I dry to the point I can break up by hand, getting to a *fluffy dust* that wants to stick to your fingers (any incandescent light bulb works great). I funnel this into a doob tube for easy stem loading.
Most Common Reasons for a Mediocre Session
1. Weak or bad battery
2. Bad flower puck:
That can be for a bunch of reasons -the herb isn't good, the herb isn't prepped properly, the herb isn't tamped properly (loose screen is notorious for ruining the ability to easily tamp).
3. Clogged screen
After rereading my post, I have to add one thing. I don't want you to have to work hard to get a great session. Think of it like cooking. A little preparation will go a long, long, way.
