Please be a re run of the 19m, obsidium colour with a non captive cap…
My favourite m the 19, also the one that got me into Dynavap, and who’s bright idea was it to make the captive cap standard with all new units, it’s a right bastard because I always end up having to buy a standard cap as well.

For me nothing has beaten the look of the 19m in terms of DV’s own efforts, I just love the machining on it and that fish scale pattern. The tip on it is the best they’ve ever done in my opinion. Man to see the 19m in black.

I’d stock up on those regular caps by the way, I heard a rumour DV are going to slowly phase them out over time and be all in on captive caps going forward. Believe of that what you will

Oh shit, I hope they don’t phase the regular caps out, looks like al be buying a good few of these then just in case.

As in the PhantoM19?
Although that one is more greyish black in most cases...
Tbh, I like that finish better than the obsidium. I can't really say why, but the shinier, more uniform black looks cheaper to me for some reason.

Fwiw, I've read people say they've decrimped then roll-tightened them for similar results. They're allegedly the same caps otherwise.

I’ve also heard this but I always find the captive caps give me wispier hits like they don’t heat up then same or something.

I understand that newer caps are reformulated to heat in IHs with less battery drain, so if you're using an IH for both, presumeably they will have noticeably different function. Otherwise, the older caps seem heavier to me; not sure they are, but the mass might account for some difference? And I want to say they seem looser, of course, but then I remember that the captive cap holds my VonG in a death-grip.

I’m using a torch 100% of the time, my normal caps don’t move at all, never understood folks who had an issue with theirs being loose, just squeeze the caps a little and boom problem sorted, George even done a video about it a while ago.

Yeah, I think the captive was designed for folks who use a strong cap-puller magnet. I've never used one that way, but I do have one stand with real strong magnets and no matter how tight I squeeze a nc cap, it's pulls it and spills herb. Love the stand, hate the mess. I also like the cap loose for as good airflow/convection as possibe (and I think the newer tips are designed for that), so I hate the little indents less now that I used to. Still, I could use a frikkin' release lever for that damn Vong tip.

And that goes for the captive caps as well: squeeze them so the captive part doesn't work anymore and voila, they work exactly the same as the non captive ones
I still find my standard caps produce more Vapor than the captive and captives that have been modified. Maybe just me? Added bonus normal caps are a good bit cheaper.

def not just you. they decreased cap wall thickness in 2020 to decrease resistance for IH's, possibly even alloy composition. seems to me they slightly increased it back in 2021 but not up to pre 2019 levels.

new non-captive caps you can buy now perform differently than 2019 and older ones. they heat/cool faster and produce lighter vapor on click. not great, not terrible, can be adjusted for with technique. used to hate them but now my daily drivers are 2021 captive caps.

I’m getting pretty good vapour from a standard cap I bought along with the new vong (I), always respecting the click, performs just as well as a cap I got 2 years ago with my omnivong (also standard) not quite as good but really pretty close.

I’m pretty sure that is has something to do with the conduction/convection ratio.

As in, the captive cap lessens the conduction due to the lowered contact, but the extra convection it brings doesn’t have the same extraction “power” as the conduction it replaces. Hence the lower temps and smaller clouds. Which also ties in with George making the caps less hot and more user friendly

I physically can’t tell a difference between Regular and CC, so it has to be something to do with the captive system itself

I get massive clouds with captive or non captive but i do prefer the original non captive, the indents make the cap harder to pull off some tips.
I agree, and especially if you combust it’s hard to whip that captive cap off quickly and blow the cherry out.

I have a strong magnet that I keep handy just to pull off a regular cap if I combust. Like @coolbreeze says, it’s not great for normal use though - sends material flying everywhere when you accidentally decap it. I have a weaker magnet for regular use

There’s a debate going on right now on Reddit, between the 18m tip and 19m tip.

I prefer the 19m, I had an 18m tip for a couple weeks and can’t remember it being that great with a torch

Anyone 18m guys here?

Wouldn't have said this a year ago but my favorite tip/cap combo for a IH is the 21 VonG tip and captive cap.
Different story for a torch. Prefer a 18 cap and either a 19 SS or 18 TI tip. Stashed away 3 virgin 18 caps stored under lock and key. :)

Long Live the Dynavap!

I find this hilarious. I did a lot of hyping of the '18-M a couple of years ago. Started complaining about poor air flow. '19-M comes out with the 3 crenelations along the ridge. '19-M is by far superior to the '18-M in air flow. However, some, and I mean 'only a handful', have unicorn caps that are really hot. By hot I mean they hold heat so well you can vanquish a cap in two draws. These became even more rare on the '19-M's and completely disappeared starting with the '20-M.

Bottom line, '18 tips suck until you ruin them by filing the crenelations in the tip. Even then, the '19 SS tip blows it away. '18-M caps, often unserialized or tip with serial numbers on the outside in the form of DYn-nnnn have a chance of being a unicorn cap. Therefore the only reason an '18-M is valuable, other than collector status, is when it actually comes with a hot cap. Otherwise it is just an '18-M - poor, high resistance, draws. Not a fan of the tip. I shortened my tip and all is better with my OG '18-M. But of the unicorn caps, I have a few. They really do change the experience.

How the '18-M became so sought after is likely a mistaken idea that these are 'special'. They're not. '19-M's should be more sought after for vape path performance. A lot of the caps on '19-Ms are also hotter than '2020+ caps a little more consistently.

I did end up with a fairly hot cap on an '18 VapCap Shomni. This is a cap with no serial number.

Bottom line, '18-M hype really got blown out of proportion. If anyone needs to fill out a collection, contact me, but for performance, I am holding onto my hot caps. I know how to tell which are and which are not 'high iron' caps. Shelf queens just need period caps, not necessarily the hottest.

Is that what makes the caps different then?

Just the iron content?

I’ve noticed this, some of the older caps seem to perform way better than the newer ones (especially in IH)

I'd love to get a true analysis of the material to know what the actual difference is. I suspect it has to do with chromium content in the stainless steel. I also suspect that they are harder to form during fabrication. They probably came from an alternate supplier and that is why there is so much variation.
