Double post... too late to edit... ;)

So I was introduced to Flashvape through their resin plates, and they kindly offered to familiarize me with Flashvape at the same time. Oddly I wasn't really familiar with FV - there are a lot of vapes out there, and while it's great to try them all I'm also aware that there are a fair few strewn about chez killick and I'm not actively searching Anyhoo, things happen... .

The plates and 10 ton press... there is no quibbling about the output, with 11g in, 2.3 out, not including the blobs stuck to the floor, or the one that slingshot (slungshot? Slingshotted?) from the silicone container I was trying to clean a blob from a dab tool with. I was also reminded of 'finger hash' as I peeled a few sticky blobs off my foot a second ago - there was a bit of an incident that let some resin be a little bit more wandery than I would have liked... It'll get easier, but the first one should be an adventure... Probably.

So FlashVape sent along a vape to try. And sent instructions on how to use it with resin. Firstly it's a pretty decent vape on it's own. It's portable, but tippy, so I'd call it an around the house portable, as opposed to a pocketable cycling portable, say. It's solid metal, outside of the glass viewport on the top where you can watch vapour form. - VapeTV is a great show! 3-5 second preheat - it's kinda like a Milaana or other on/off styles. It's both convection or conduction depending on how it's set up. It's nice for flower. But Team FV sent me instructions on how to use it for resin, which are more difficult than they sound: "just smear a blob directly on the heater screen". It doesn't stick like that for me, so instead i drop a flat piece on top and let 'er rip. And rip she does. I kinda think of it as a portable dab station... The base looks like a baseball bat, the top like a microphone, and it's mostly nice solid metal. Smoky karaoke, cause vapy karaoke doesn't sound natural...

So the flattened 2g blob of resin on the desk is very nice to look at, with a shimmery depth deeper than it's 1/32nd"ish outside... And easy to drop a flat piece directly onto the FV heater screen. And it just keeps pushing vapour.

Anyhoo, back to karaoke!

I've been fortunate enough to get some resin to use in my FV, and like you at first I was unsure how to use it. I knew that you had to get the resin directly onto the heater screen, but I wasn't too successful in getting the resin off the dabber tool. Then I asked @FlashVAPE for advice, and he explained that the secret is to hold the loaded dabber tool near the screen while you heat it up. Once the resin melts, stop heating the screen and then smear the resin around. There will be a little bit of bubbling and a wisp of vapour, but most of the resin will form a nice thin coating over the screen.

I like to use the FV WPA and my Orbiter bubbler for resin. A dab will give two or three really tasty thick hits.

I was using resin in the FV with the WPA and my Orbiter because I thought that the vapour would be too harsh to draw directly. In showing off the setup to a friend, I mentioned that while the flavour was great , pulling through water diminished it somewhat. Then on a whim, I decided to try direct draw. Wow! Not too harsh after all, and terrific flavour. The difference between pressed resin and solvent-based concentrates is even more obvious and highly pronounced.

Hey time flies, its now 2019 and 7 years since the FV's hit FC! I want to thank everyone for your participation and support over the years... props all around :buzz:

In light of recent vape additives scare, I think its important for us to get back to the roots of vaping 420, which has never involved any additives to begin with. Now we're into 710 era and vaping trates / dabbing is proven more popular by the day, its also important for us to remember, dab pure and don't mix! We never liked the concept of mixing GV or PG, trates, like flower, should be vaped raw.

The FV is a powerful tool for raw trate dabs.

In our newest update to this tried and true vape, we want to share how easy it is to dab real concentrates in raw form (solventless rosin is recommended over shatter every time), by adding powerful GLASS BEADS to the mix.

fv-logo.png

-DAB BEADS-

FV-Beads-e1575328003447.jpg

Dab beads are 3mm glass beads that maximizes surface area to vaporize your trate, which melts through the top screen and hits the hot beads as the heating element heats up red hot.

One full layer of dab beads can be placed on top of the heating element screen for huge dabs, or just enough dab beads to fit inside the ceramic spacer can be used for smaller dabs. The tabbed screen goes on top of the dab beads to hold everything in place.

FV-Beads-S2-spacer.jpg

(for maximum vapour production through dabbing, S2 3.7v power cell is recommended)

Please see below demo of how the dab goes down inside the ceramic bowl of the FV, without the top screen blocking the view.

This shows about .15 of rosin being vaporized on naked beads, using S2 3.7v battery.

The incredible power of the FV with its very unique stainless steel screen, is able to quickly bring up temp of the glass beads to 350F for perfect vapour delivery, as the fat dab melts and hits the hot beads.

We have the dab beads available as an accessory for your FV here:

https://flashvape.com/beads

or complete FV Dab editions here with the dab beads pre-loaded (no extra charge):

https://flashvape.com/dab

or same kit with Stage-2 3.7v batteries and dab beads pre-loaded

i got my flashvape after needing a upgrade form mflb, for something that does concentrates better with more power. FC has been a great resource for me on vapes, must have saved me several 100s over the years with first hand report on how each device performs. want to say thanks to all who contributes to everything. it was bit of an impulse buy at the time, but since i went fv i havent looked back. im making rosin now for my meds and this is perfect. im very excited to see this beads development as it looks like exactly what ive been looking for, a way to deliver thicker vapor from dabs. i travel alot and glass is not very inconvenient , fv is :D.

one question though, since i have only the standard 3.2v batteries, will these still work well to rip big clouds?

The 3.7v Stage-2 battery will heat the beads to dabbing temperature faster, like 5 seconds vs 10 seconds on 3.2v batteries. It is better if you only use enough beads to fill the S2 spacer (like in pic below) on regular 3.2v battery, as the beads require alot of power to get up to temp. A full layer should be reserved for S2 battery power. However, once up to temp, the 3.2v battery will also produce very respectable clouds from dabs, much much more than anything using a coil for heat source.

The heated beads have high thermo mass and will continue to produce vapour even after the power on-button is released, for a few seconds as the tail end of your draw (air flow) cools down the beads.

I've been lucky enough to try the dab beads, so here are my thoughts.

Before I start, you should know that I prefer not to call this a dab as such. Many (most?) people think of a dab as that high-temperature instant cloud that you can get only from really hot surfaces. This is not that kind of dab. It's more like an oil pen than a nail. It's even cooler and slower than a pen, however, so it's also smoother and easier on the throat. In my opinion, it's also tastier.

Next, handle these beads with care. They are small, they love to bounce and roll, they are nearly invisible once they escape, and they are always trying to get away. I use a strong light to track them down once they've hit the floor, because you definitely do not want to step on one, especially in bare or stocking feet.

I haven't tried the 3.2V batteries, but I have no doubt that they will work. No matter which type you use, however, you should recognize that this method uses a lot of power, so make sure you have at least two batteries and preferably more. A lot depends on how you use the beads: session or micro-dose. This is to be expected given the amount of heat it takes to get the beads going. Once they're heated up, subsequent hits won't use as much battery. That means this is more power efficient as a session method compared to micro-dosing. I haven't done any tests to determine how long a battery lasts.

Getting the beads to cover the screen evenly can be tricky. It's a great idea to use the spacer if you have one. You don't need as many beads, and getting them in a single layer is much easier. I found that without the spacer, it was hard to get the tabbed screen to lie flat. If you tried to press it down, the beads will tend to climb the sides of the bowl. The spacer eliminates this problem.

After you've used the beads they get sticky and are harder to manipulate into place, therefore once you have got it right and put the tabbed screen in, it's best to leave everything alone. It will stay in place because it all gets sticky. Of course this means that eventually you will have to clean it, but a short soak in ISO is all it takes. Since they're glass beads, you can even clean them up in your hot cocoa or whatever you use, being mindful that they're tiny so you'd better strain well.

To load the FV, heat it for about 10 seconds, then drop the concentrate onto the tabbed screen and let it melt in. It's as simple as that. Put the top back on, heat for 10-15 seconds or until you see vapour forming, then draw. It is about as smooth and cool and tasty as dabs of rosin or oil ever get. As @FlashVAPE mentions, there is enough thermal mass involved that it will continue to produce vapour for a while after you take you finger off the button. You'll have to experiment a bit to figure out when to release. You can't use the same timings for every hit because the battery is dying and this is an unregulated device, so you need to take that into account. It's not as complicated as it sounds, however. I don't think it will take long to get your timing down. My secret is to watch the air inlets carefully. When I see vapour start to escape, it's go-time.

As I said, you won't get a huge instant cloud this way. If you need that one big hit, you can cover the intake holes and let the vapour build up for a few seconds. This still won't be like a nail dab, but you can get a nice cloud. Be forewarned that this will make the top of the FV hot. Not too hot to touch, but it can get uncomfortable to hold for long.

A dab seems to last forever when I use this technique. You can stretch your concentrate a little further, with the bonus of smoother tastier vapour. It's my preferred method for concentrates and I suspect anyone who tries it will immediately understand why.

Hey @pakalolo what a great, detailed write up. I'd like to add:

I've been lucky enough to try the dab beads, so here are my thoughts.

Before I start, you should know that I prefer not to call this a dab as such. Many (most?) people think of a dab as that high-temperature instant cloud that you can get only from really hot surfaces. This is not that kind of dab. It's more like an oil pen than a nail. It's even cooler and slower than a pen, however, so it's also smoother and easier on the throat. Perhaps the biggest difference between a FV dab and oil pen (or pod systems) is that your concentrate is not cut with any additives, whether it'd be PG, VG, or liquid terpenes. You are actually vaporizing the concentrate (rosin anyone?) in its raw form. This IMHO, has always been and will always be the best way to inhale concentrates, gong or vape alike.

I don't think it will take long to get your timing down.

When adding/replacing beads, it works best on a flat, new heating element screen, as the heating element screen may wrap / wrinkle a bit after much use due to the heat. Of course, clean beads are important as well since they are indeed very stick when covered in melty dabs.

...... My secret is to watch the air inlets carefully. When I see vapour start to escape, it's go-time.

I call these "dragon beards..." I also remove the filter screen in the swivel cap if I'm only using this FV for dabs (filter screen is only important for keeping grind in the bowl when vaping flower). Looking down the top window you can see exactly when the melt happens and when vapour starts to flow.

For a huge hit, pull slightly slower, and longer. The vapour produced is thick and tasty. For anyone looking for portable dabs, FV dab beads deliver great results.

ok rosin sounds super tasty, cant wait to try with the beads. i think i'll simply stick with the 3.2v batteries since i like my dabs on the cooler side. hope it won't take too long to heat up though. i will report back after getting the beads loaded up.

another thing i want to ask: i tried some shatter, and while some works great, some others literally ignites and catches on fire in the flashvape. i am thinking that perhaps its due to the butane content (certainly smells like it). has anyone else experienced this? is it just a case of bad shatter not purified enough?

Shatter is sometimes problematic if it is not properly purged, as some butane residue may be left behind in the final product. Alot of shady operators do not vac oven long enough to remove all the butane. If it ignites and produces black smoke, its the butane. I say stay solventless (rosin) and you'll be happier ;)!

thats what I figured. i got some rosin and the dab has changed my life! ok, not so much lol but mosdef much better and works so well on beads in the flashvape. well done mr. fv and i can happily report that no ignition problem as before with shatter. so needless to say im not gonna be smoking any more butane in future. thanks for the pointers!

Hey this sounds like moon rocks @ataxian, I've done some great experimentation with moonrocks before in the FV, no glass beads just straight on the heating element screen, using the regular 3.2v battery. The sessions are long lasting, and vapour is crazy thick. It's a very unique experience that few other devices can deliver like the FV.

not from the cap, just dropping the moon rock right onto the heating element screen (regular 3.2v battery), or if you are using the S2 (3.7v) battery, on top of the top screen with the ceramic spacer in place.

My face is melting...
This vaporizer is on my short list for on the go, one handed hits.

I have a vast assortment of torch heater units that are totally suitable 95% of the time for my needs. But I was on a road trip a few weeks ago and found myself wishing for something that doesn't require me to hold a torch to it to make it work.......especially in the wind.

Watcha all think of the FV?

In my last foray into the world of battery powered units I accidentally wound up purchasing a spot on counterfeit MFLB which I didn't realize was a fake until I gave up on it and passed it on to another forum member (he tried to warranty it and realized there was no S#)

Anyway, that experience led me into fire based torches and I've never looked back (I assumed at the time that batterypowered vapes suck) I came to realize tho that I was misguided in my ways and that someday I'd like to give it another try. I prefer hard and full extraction in a couple hits. Is this unit up to task you think?

I'm not sure what you mean by on-the-go, but the FV is a rather large and heavy unit. It's not something you slip into your pocket (unless you want your pants to fall down).

If you get one, be sure to get the spacer. The FV requires careful technique to avoid combustion, since it is insanely powerful. The spacer moderates that. Speaking of which, I wonder what the glass beads do for vaping dry herbs. More research is needed! :science:

By on the go I mean something reasonably small that can fit in a pack or something I can reach for when I'm recharging my mellow on a road trip..... like say at a park. I want something that is one hand operated, wind resistant and unlikely to get dropped easily. Orif it does, can handle the fall and is easy to find (waiting on the day I drop my DV in the deep snow).

It just needs to be reasonably small, light and durable. The fact that the FV operates on 18650 batteries is a big deal in a good way to me too. Not because I'm an EE but the contrary.....I'm a complete Luddite. I do know that all my non-cannabis flashlights use 18650, so I can keep it simple for myself.

FWIW, I'm strictly using torches as my heat source now, so see the on demand learning curve as a challenge. It sounds as though it roasts.the bowl too IYE......excellent:rockon:

The company itself has been around was and seems solid.

I'm probably gonna do this
