Tek Spiderman's Oil Extravaganza!

So I just started making BHO with a glass extractor after reading tons of info on here and toke city, and have a question involving BHO taste since this is really my first time dealing with actual BHO.

Within the past few days, I have done a few tiny runs. Since my runs all used below 3 grams of relatively decent weed, I didn't utilize any vac purge, just water baths, oven purging at 150 and some torch razing. I'm pretty sure I over did the temps/purging for a majority of the runs, because the product was pretty dark at normal light but in the light it clearly looked like amber sap.

Every time the BHO has smelled really good and looked great on the pyrex plate even if it was overpurged. The smell was exactly like what I have smelled when making Glycerin tinctures and other various edibles. I use a TI pad to vape it, and there is always some level of taste of this strong, earthy almost vaped opium like smell...it doesn't remind me at all of fuel and I'm using high quality Lucienne butane so I'm almost positive its not a problem with tane taste or underpurging. When I'm heat the back of the pad up and the previous oil marks vape off, that also smells strongly of the particular smell. The smell remains strong in the room a few minutes after a few dabs too, although sometimes the oil does taste sweet and weedy, the taste and smell I'm talking about is still a part of it and is released off when the pad is heated up before a hit and it varies between whether it was from darker oil or lighter oil.

I didn't notice any weird colors or obvious impurities from potential worst case fertilizer/pesticide/chemical contaminated flowers, nor did the product sparkle/sizzle noticeably.

So am I just inexperienced with the different range of tastes in BHO? I should note that this is my first known BHO experience, I tried dabs initially a little bit back at a friends and it the light greenish buddery material did have a similar interesting strong taste from recollection, but it was through a dirty smoked out of bong so the taste was already mixed with smoke so I can't properly rank that taste. I have read that the taste of good BHO can range greatly sometimes with what properly purged product will taste and smell like when vaped/smoked depending on the weed used, but I'm still unclear on if I'm fine or not.

TK, i notice that if u try to compair the taste of vape herb, smoked herb, hash and concentrate all could be from the same exact plant and smell just like it. But once consumed the flavors can be wildly diffrent. I have a strain now that has toooooo strong of a botanical smell... I dont like the flavor of the concentrate, but if the herb is vaped it tastes of delicios coconut instead of peanut when its down to abv. Would never know that unless i had tested it myself.

I use lucienne right now, i intend to try another brand with the next case... Prolly the all expensive vector... But i also question the taste preference of Ti... I find that i personally do like my quartz more than the couple pieces of ti that i have... But its all personal taste really

Toasted, that all sounds fairly regular. Some of the terpenes that make the noticeable odors are more likley to be picked up by butane as a solvent than others. Also, the temp can alter the taste of some more than others. If you're strictly looking for health ramifications, based on what you said nothing sounds abnormal. I'd reccomend a vac pump for purging if flavor is really your concern, though as I said not all flavors are as affected by heat as others are.

TK, to me it sounds like the smell & flavor of an overheated nail & therefore an overheated dab:

You as we all, have had at least once this "almost mechanical oil taste & odor" in the room. You have to find your heat point (based on your torch, the Ti mass of your nail, the colors as reference point, etc..). I usually get them pretty red glowing and then take my time till any trace of glowing is gone, then drop my bhomb, and I can mosdef tell you if it was too hot or not by the flavor of my hit!

To get the exact temp where all the dab will be properly vaped (no more lost vapes from the nail/dome & with a pool of liquid oil in it...) but without any burned oil smells & flavors has its learning curve and the bigger the dab, the bigger the curve!

Took a min, but here are some pics.

I got my Large Oil slick pad from ALT. the smalls from ebay.

Since I use heat to purge (vacless) and I also have to do my runs commando (mind out the gutter boy!)... :lmao:

:ninja: = style... I like to get my ass back inside ASAP. so some times i do a final purge on my candle warmer. works great with the little card size pads!

I also like to use them during breakfast...

A quick little update on my project with testing the teflon sheets. Do not get the ones for printing t-shirts, the butane will leak trough turning it into more of a mess then just spraying it in the dish. Now i had to scrape and the dish and the sheet of teflon(very carefully off course, loosing at least 1g of oil in the process).

The teflon coocking sheets are great, have reused them several times, spray, purge, stick together...Could not be much easier...

Oh and i tried re-vaccing some budder, and it came out as beautiful shards...So that is possible for those of you who find their nice shatter turned into budder after a few days...just revac it, it does not hurt the product, I have found it makes it even better. My :2c:

That says a lot, thank you for posting so budder and wax really is made more unstable by whipping air and moisture into it as i thought, and auto-buttering is merely your bho absorbing moisture from the air...... Always did like sap and shatter best

Still it is covered with silicone, which is no good with butane...so yes, for storing this might be okay, but i would be very carefull with spraying on it...The teflon coocking sheets are still cheaper and teflon does not in any way react to butane...my :2c:

here is an example of some nice balls of shatter I made using the teflon coocking sheet tek :p

And here is another one where I left the oil on the sheet and collected is as it was, thin pieces of niece gold...

What are you using as a chamber tepictoton ? I like that it appears stainless base and can be placed on the heat source easily like you show.

I'm not that concerned at this point with spraying onto the silicone as I'm not showing 'any' degradation (by eye) of the sheets in the least. I'll have to source some teflon cooking sheets to try if not just for the sake of trying, lol.

My BHO time is done for the season as my RH levels are now too low and risky of spark outside now with winter..... so it's QWISO until @March now for me.http://fuckcombustion.com/members/tepictoton.8815/

i'm using a glass dessicator from the lab. Had the luck to get one cheap, second hand. The pump is a second hand deep vacuum pump from an electron microscope. Have a mityvac pump attached to it as well with a nano meter.

I'm not that concerned with winter, or should I be?...actually maybe you can shed some more light on this? Am planning to do small run tonight and temp will be around freezing point...:\

i can definately recommand the teflon, has been my best discovery yet, makes life of an oilhead loads easier...and the pyrex dishes will be for ever greatful too:)

Lucky YOU to finding a source of a used lab piece !!

Where did you source your telfon sheets from ? or do you have specs that I can attempt to search out locally of what your using ?

Last winter I had a scare after setting up outside in the winter to spray BHO.... the air was dry, and even with a wrist & ankle ground strap connected to a ground plate that I normally stand on I got a static spark off my clothing !!...... scared the crap out of me to think that I was minutes away from starting the spray and could have easily blew the fuck up. So now... no more spraying in winter for me !

hmm i will be extra carefull, but only planning on doing really small run, just two cans of tane...

there is a really handy second hand labstuff website that is based in holland. took a while to get the dessicator, but definately worth it. Glass is 8mm thick and feels solid as a rock.

The teflon I get at my local 'blokker' hmm how would one call that in english...can find them on ebay as well under bbq teflon sheets, but they are more expansive, I pay 5euro for the sheets, 33 by 40cm.

There are some source posts of some PTFE sheets and i posted a lonk to a PTFE supply store that does things like PTFE beaker liners and such.

PTFE = teflon... Just in case there was a question what i was refering too..

Blast on gents!

this weekend's blast :) made from some outdoor OG's, end result has a very strong piney flavour, my favorite till now...

and a second run on the same batch, this time i froze it before spraying, end result another 2,1g of golden(bit darker) goodyness:p

So I just did a blast and tried the PTFE black cooking sheet (5 euros at the cooking store) and to me it is MUCH MORE messy and much less efffective then the oil slick pads... DO not really understand why but the folding method did not come with all the oil and very little went through the sheet and I could see the pattern of the ptfe sheet in a "sticky" residue on my pyrex...
I still have to test with a sheet of ptfe reinforced with fiber glass (basically the oil slick pad but in ptfe) that I found for 6 euros...but to me the basic one is not a success!
On the other hand, by eye/feeling (as it is vac purging right now) I can tell my ratio is "off the charts" with this mixture of mine (70% top quality grinded maroccan hash, 25% good trim, 5% top kief): total 13g. of product in a freaking tight SSTB)... will come back soon with pix and weights but my theory that mixtures have better ratios then 1 product only seems to be true for all of my experiences... Again, do not really understand it...

EDIT/ BTW, Tepic, most of medical grade silicones are solvent resistent, not the food grade ones generally I agree!

FLskwat, seems like the teflon you used is more like the one I got that is used for printing shirts...

The ones I use now are not letting anything get trough them. i actually just cut one apart and checked it, and yes it seems fiberglass is woven into it. I know it sucks to get one of the sheets that does leak and leaves you with several surfaces to scrape :(

still, from the sound of it, looks like you are okay with the result...Happy purging:p

Well, if adding keif n hash your % will go up because the only thing left of keif would be tricome hulls and hash would be basically the same... All most traditional hashs are basically just ruptured trichs (i think) so the more your plant matter the lower your yeild. The less plant matter there is, the higher ur yeild...

Wish i could just buy keif n hash i bet the oil would be the tastiest ever with all that goodness

So I got 4.2 g out of 13g ...32% in the first run...EXCELENTE! (bear in mind I have lost a little on the PTFE sheet as I do not want PTFE particles in my bho (probably .1 max)! The filters are caked in an usual way so second run will probably give me the 8% to reach my 40% graal ratio (done once with 50% hash, 40% haze nugs, 10% kief)!

EDIT: @farscaper, yes obviously but my theory was more that:

with (best) weed only I max at 25%,
with (best) hash only I max at 32%,
with both of them associated I can reach 38%...so theres a kind of chemical magic going in there (like a"compounds extracted more completely when associated" sort of theory...), that I do not understand but can weight & see! ;)

EDIT 2:
Here's a pix of both the black sheet normal baking PTFE: not approved IME vs. the brown one (reinforced with fiber glass) that I still have to test:

Here's the final product of today's run:

And here's a family Xmas pix

Left pad top: 50% afgan H/ 50% Maroccan Hash
middle: 100% sweet tooth
low: today's recipe
Right pad middle: 100% maroccan H
low: 100% super lemon haze

ENJOY!
