Does anyone have printing on their SSV ceramic heater? Over on the LSV thread it is stated that this printing helps determine if their heater is pulled out enough. My SSV has no visiible printing on it. Here is the post on the LSV thread:
Got an LSV right after the election to celebrate prop 64 passing here in Colorado. Awesome vape kit.

@lwien, how far is your heating element extended? I remember reading a few pages back that it should be showing the dash mark after the "STD" printing. As you can see in the picture below, the element on my LSV is even a bit past the dash. I can tell you that I'm not having to run mine at max temp to get the abv a pretty dark brown. 3-oclock is plenty on mine. normally I'm more in 12-1 range. Especially when using the transfer wand. Just a thought that your heating element might need to be adjusted.

Also, I take it that the metal shim everyone is talking about is the piece at the base that holds the heating element in place? My glass HC definitely fits all the way down until it's touching the 3 screws.

Hmmm I have never heard of any writing on the Ssv element I am pretty sure most tell the proper position by where it sits in the heat cover. The element should be even or slightly above the bottom of the hole in the heater cover that mates with the wand.

Thanks Puffers. That's clear and that is where my element sits. Though off-centre, which combined with a few other imperfections, I find bothersome.

DBVnOOb, regarding learning how to vapor-bong, Seek just posted something perhaps useful that re-iterates the slow, long draw technique. Here is a q quote :

Smoke - Use 1/2 lung capacity to fill whole chimney, then the remaining 1/2 to inhale it all. With smoking the bowl can be killed in that 1/2 lungful. Vapor is very different. This method would yield 50% vapor-to-air ratio, so a lot of notvery dense hits - not very desireable.

With vapor you even need to inhale for a while before it starts producing, so there is even more air before it starts to fill to begin with.

The vapor stream doesn't end at all when the tube is fully milked like with smoke, so you don't clear it as soon as it milks fully, but rather inhale even more and "cycle contents" in it like 4 times, before clearing it.

Vaporbonging is more like flow-filtering. The main part of the vapor hit (which should be longest and use the most of lung capacity) is inhaling, when the piece is already milked. With 1/2 lung capacity piece, that is even less than ZERO.

That main part will make high vapor-to-air ratio, which gives great hits and only few of them before the bowl gets killed. More vapor-to-air ratio is better (unless you're into extreme conserving wanting not to exhale anything).

Is the element off center or the cover? That would bother my type A personality for sure. My cover had a tendency to turn in use for a while, i removed the heat cover and adjusted the metal shims inside to remedy this. I dont know if this would fix your problem or not i am thinking if its crooked enough to be that noticable the element is probably secured to the base slightly off center i dont think the heat cover has that much play for a good seal but just puttin it out there just in case its an easy adj to be made

No my element is quite a bit off-centre. (And I find that the cover is frequently too loose and requires frequent shim adjustment, and my wand is slightly too wide so that the screen doesn't fit tight and bits fall through). My unit still rocks though and has found new found life with the addition of a water tool. I've almost never been able to combust with my SSV (sometimes turning it up to 4 or 4.30), but now with the water, it seems like it could.

Thanks for the info, Im gonna go ahead and try that now before I go to sleep. Any1 that knows any discount codes for the official SSV retailer let me know.

Any1 with a black SSV knows how to specify a matte finish over the glossy one? Ive e-mailed 7th floor a few days ago but no reply still.

I would have thought the matte/glossy to be a required user option during the online purchase, no? I'm surprised they haven't got back to you though. Send another email? Call?

chimpybits,
Hi everyone, fairly new vaporist here, I have what may be a stupid question. I am psyched and ready to get a Rainbow Zen standard glass SSV, but I have one question. I would like to be able to keep it on low all day and just turn it up when I'm ready to use it. I have a very curious cat who likes to stick her head in things; do you think she could burn herself on one of these?

I wouldn't leave it accessible to the cat. I have a cat as well and as you already know, they are curious critters. Look at it as if it were a child...you wouldn't leave a unit on around an unsupervised child would you?

Just my :2c::)

Congrats on the new purchase! They are awesome!

She would burn herself, but she wouldn't actually get a burn. Unless she doesn't feel pain, i think there is nothing to worry about.

I'd like to make a post, and hopefully someone from SSV can chime in on these.

A company named Health Stone Glass, is spouting things on facebook saying these stones are from China, and contain aluminum, and are aparently much lower quality. The dude was also asked about his stones vs Vapor Genie stones and says they are different. So I'm confused how you can call out one company, without any information, then when asked about his being copies he says there are different, without explaining why....

7th Floor is great.
That is why people use them in comparative analogies when they want to "bash" someone.
In their sick minds.... if they "bash" the best, it makes them look like they are
in the same league.
That's my 2¢
They see 7th Floor doing well, and would love to divert some of that attention and SSV Love!

I had the same issues. Did you metal shim come with a smaller thin strip of metal about 4mm wide to wedge between the heater and the shim?

As for my wand being too wide, I borrowed a EQ cyclone screen from a friend and trimmed it down a little. Not sure what size the EQ ones are. Does your stock screen make a dome at least?

No, I don't have the thin strip of metal, but I recently came across it on a video on the 7th Floor site and can see how it might solve the issue. Which it basically does right? So, I'll just hasten a 7th Floor order I'm putting together and include the strip (and an extra shim as mine must have lost some tensile strength from frequent tweaks).

My SSV screen does dome, but it also spins. I've tried pushing down on the dome to attempt a tighter fit to no avail. Thanks for the tip on the EQ screen. I'll try that out.

I was going to order another wand and request that it fit the SSV screens and relegate my current one to a backup. But then decided to instead investigate a water piece.

Small rant: I get that there are inconsistencies in the production, but if I was less patient and not the forum type, I would just get frustrated with this vape. So, what I don't get is why 7th Floor doesn't increase the QC to catch these small (easily remedied), but significant details.

I look forward to fixing my loose heater cover which has really become more of a pita since incorporating a water piece. That and my struggling with the stiff SSV hose w/o a water pipe adapter is difficult and I'm finding that I'm often spilling herb into the SSV. So, hopefully the wpa will help considerably as well. 2 easy fixes.

Tweak, I tried the elevated SSV you suggested on the gbd forum. The bottom of my unit is raised 8.5" and I'm using 6.5" of hose. (Less hose seems helpful w/o a wpa). The setup is just gerry-rigged with books and would certainly need some design to be acceptably elegant and aesthetically pleasing as your workshop setup.

I don't know though. I'll continue to try this elevated setup (as I'm down to the last 6.5" of hose). However, I think at this point, I want to find a comfortable setup that isn't fuggly. I've always found the low point that the SSV hose emerges from the wand to be cumbersome (nearly touching the table and requiring a forceful acute angle back upwards) and again this is highlighted by vape-bonging (w/o the elevated SSV setup). I'm now realizing that the dewaar joint isn't ideal with the SSV as it requires more hose length to travel to the top of the can from this low point of the wand.

I'll order more hose (coloured - yay), the metal strip and shim, the wpa, a 14-14 angled adapter to raise my mp, and Mike's showerhead downstem. Then I'll experiment with lengths and heights some more. I've resigned myself to table-top use, but hope to find something relatively comfortable. Also, once it is ready for prime-time I can share with my friends that smoke.

I'm curious now what others' experience and setups are like vape-bonging with the surfer... The variable temp of the SSV won my purchase over a log vape candidate 18 months ago, but I can certainly envision and appreciate the ease of a HI twig perched on top of my dewaar joint...

I'm not sure, lol. That is how I'm using mine. I only have one big metal shim that works well, it's the thinnest one they sent me. I use the thin strip, that I bent to make fatter, with one end bent slightly more, to give the big metal shim a | \ kinda shape with the two shims combined. This causes the heater cover to get slightly tighter the more you shove down. I'm guessing the same could be done if you bend your big metal shim at its lower corner, as I've had them sent to me like that and was confused, lol.

IMO, that's normal. I doubt you would need EQ screen as they are much bigger and would need a lot to be cut off to fit. My SSV wand is so wide that a stock SSV screen has to be shoved completely flat to touch both sides.

I'd order another wand just for a backup anyway, lol. Llike most glass, they will differ from wand to wand. My new wand has a much deeper bowl to fit more, so I can choose the more efficient pipe and I can always have a clean whip/screen for maximum taste and flow.

I've never found the bent corner to be a solution, but your | \ wider at the bottom I've never come across stated before. Of course - I just have to make a shape which widens toward the base. I can see how adding a thin shim, a metal strip, as a simple shim element might be a good solution for me. though I'm not sure I get your detailed description of bending the strip to make fatter.

Hmm, I understood otherwise - that normal (aka "normal") was a screen that fit tight. Every stock or 0.625in screen I've tried spins and generally has one large crescent edge somewhere letting bits fly though.

One shouldn't be sucking herb (fresh or brown) through the whip or into the bong water. Not to mention that 7th floor themselves (I think) recommend loading by sucking up your ground product into the wand. Not a technique I recommend with my whip unless you like sucking up fresh green. Yours sounds even wider than mine. You don't mind the bits? My wand and whip reclaim kinda looks like scissor hash. I'm really enjoying my new bub taking this right out of the equation. Truly clean feeling draws. I'm happily and frequently dumping and ignoring my bubbler water.

Totally know I should and have always known I should have a backup. Yet here I am being as cheap as ever. Cheaper! 'cause I've just bought a bubbler and now have to buy some more glass bits.

Also, am still curious about the ground-glass setup with that small metal ground-glass clip (instead of just replacement standard heater and wand set). Not to mention the vapor brothers mini wand. Right now though really I'm just enjoying playing with water toys and getting curious what my setup will be.

I found a shim solution... tricky to verbally describe.
I pinch the shim "out of round"... making it oval shaped.
I pinch it slightly oval at the top ... from north to south
I then pinch the bottom into oval shape, but in the opposite "poles" east to west.
This will make the MOST stubborn HC fit snug all the way~

My wand fits my screen being able to dome it, when my wand is perfectly clean it doesn't stay as well. After a cpl sessions the resins hold it into place and its a non issue on my wand. After kiefy hash builds around the dome I get very few particulates through. I only clean my wand a couple times a year and by brushing my screen (great tip Vito  ) after a session with my LB brush I can keep a free flowing screen for usually my whole time between cleanings unless I am running lots of hash.

Thanks Vitolo, your description is clear. I did bend my cylindrical shim with a tapered shape in mind and now have a much tighter fitting hc. Knowing why I was bending the corner has helped. Still, I think I'll achieve a more secure fit with ordering the strip and trying your method out Vitolo.

Puffers I've done exactly as you describe and it works well. However, hash is a rarity for me. This technique doesn't work with most flowers which end up very dry and my cleanings (with pick and brush) tend to clean the entire screen including edges. I suspect I could manage the resiny sealed edges with flowers if I wasn't the clean type. I have entertained on the next hash availability to get some and reserve it just for this purpose, but this may take more willpower than I have as I love hard brown hash alone in the SSV wand.

Another idea was offered by Alan (TT and HI) - carefully hammering the screen on an anvil to achieve a slightly wider screen. Between these 2 ideas and incorporating water diffusion I'm set.

I could of course order another wand (specifying my fussiness with the bore). Or keep thinking of switching to a log vape (hello HI) as my desktop vape w/ and w/o water.

If you hammer the screen out you can stack two of them to keep the weave tight. I normally just use wand hash in my SSV and ya I don't worry about cleaning my bowl area of the wand very much. When I brush it I just give it a quick dusting on the dome to keep the particles from gluing into the screen with resin, I don't brush around the edges or go overboard with it cause it just contaminates my wand hash IMO. Fwiw I basically use my SSV for flowers only and if it gets hash it's normally just a small load topped with wand hash for night time. I don't clean my bowl area to factory clean because it helps keep the screen in and doesn't bother me. When I reclaim from my wand it's basically from the bowl down and I just use the pick to scrape what I can off the bore in the wand and below the screen to keep airflow good.

Yep, Puffers all this makes total sense. I know that if I let resin seal my screen in, then my whip and wand will be much cleaner as well as my reclaim (which is full of ABV). Maybe I'll try again and ignore my clean fetish (which by keeping the screen clean results in the gap which ironically leads to muckier wand, whip, and bong water). I think if I can carefully sneak long Q-tips or pipe cleaner under the bowl and carefully iso clean ...

I suspect I'm not interesting in stacking screens. I tried 2 un-hammered screens and certainly didn't like the resultant restricted draw.

I'm still playing with my new water toy and happily tossing the bong water away. Soon, I'll deal with this loose screen business and perhaps consider glass reclaim. Still making baby steps toward a more comfortable vape-bong setup. I should look through some pages in this thread and elsewhere on fc for pics of SSV+bubbler setups.
