Happy to see a few Timber Elite sales. Very, very happy. Those of you getting in on this remarkable 25% discount are benefiting from what has to happen to convince the vaping community at large what this mega vape can do.

BATTERY LIFE
I forget how battery life is a big issue for people. As a heavy user, I remember charging batteries every day, what a freaking pain in the ass. I do have a four battery charger that gets used about every third or fourth day. I always forget to charge in the unit (old habit), but this bad boy could be plugged in and charged via USB.

Literally, my batteries are 2 years old, and used, used, used. I used to have to swap them out at 360 or 370, but with the introduction of the DNA 75c, I can routinely take my batteries below 350 - which is supposed to be bad for them. I still get about 8 sessions from these *abused* batteries. To clarify a session, it's about .1 gram (more or less). I do dry out the herb (saves battery from having to), and grind medium fine (for an even vape).

It's easy to see, when watching the Escribe software as you take a hit, what is happening with battery, and how many watts are being pulled. It's fascinating to watch the chip do its thing, with watts staying as low as possible to keep temps or power up. The battery will do this with no noticeable change in performance, down to 3.30, repeatedly, with no perceptible change in battery health.

I've been testing my latest build, and happy to report really good results. I've been able to keep settings low and pull nice vapor. It's quick, still cool, barely above room temp. The four vent holes are deep and 1/32 narrower. There is a noticeable increase in open draw, but small, and with that is coming more cloud potential (for those who love the cloud). Clouds, or noticeable exhaled vapor, are being produced because of the rapid extraction. Pulling a bit more air, through four narrow intake vents, sitting a bit lower in the chamber, can pulverize a bowl. The effect is what I like to call *freight train*. Sipping is still an option, just don't pull as hard. The beefy wood housing is the coil's best friend.

Coil to tube distances are functioning nicely, but I'm always tweaking this final spec. Right now we're at 7 mm, down from the LB Elite's 10 mm. I may take back another mm. My concern is making Timber just right for the brand new user, as well the experienced vapist.

How dry do you get your herb and how far in advance? Most vapers I know try to keep their herb fairly moist, using boveda packs and such.

When I get new material I just dump it all into an old cedar cigar box overnight or longer, depending on what I started with. This usually does the trick. Place a paper towel in there with everything if it's really damp. I either just leave it in there, or take out and put into jar after. Cheers! D.

I’m sorry Mike but I don’t dry my herb like you do and my vape batteries don’t either . Ffs

Like , the DNA is by itself a good battery life , why do you have to stretch your “drying the herb “ technique on to us so badly To promote the Timber battery life to go as far as tell us your vape batteries don’t dry your herb... yeah no doubt . most herb I see in stores or at your friendly neighbor dealer is already DRY .

The Elite is too finicky with dryness and grind folks .... is this the message we are promoting ? Face palm

As this community has grown (and this likely applies to the Classic as well), it’d be fun to have folks share cool “innovations” or cool little hacks you use with your Vapwood vapes. For instance, one of my favorite hack’s is actually @P.A.M. ‘s bamboo spear pick tool. My own personal hack... I love the 8mm draw roasting tubes I had @Alan turn for me. What cool hacks do you do?

I had him make them for me specifically because I was looking for a tighter draw. And they work great. This is my 8mm, along with one with a glass insert, and the “standard”, non-glass insert mike sends out (12mm?). I haven’t used anything but the 8mm for months since I received.

What I had him create for me....... http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-elite-by-vapwood.34524/page-25#post-1381020

I am very intrigued by the 8 mm's, and will be testing some. I've already contacted @Alan to let him know that I need a couple to test out.

No need for apologies, we're talking about the moisture level of weed. I happen live in a very humid place (been soup here lately), my weed guy lives in a very humid place, water weighs a lot and weed is expensive - most of my weed is probably improperly dried to begin with. I store with Boveda 62 packs in CVaults. Then I put under a light 60 watt light bulb for anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight right before grinding medium fine. This is by no means mandatory, just my favorite way to vape. Think of it as a recipe instead of a rule. Timber Elite (or LB) doesn't need the driest herb possible, I just like it. And I don't do it for battery life, it's a side effect. Most people aren't dealing with 95% humidity, so this should not be an issue for them. This is the same thing as telling people to not overload or over tamp, the idea is a baseline for ease of use for a beginner, and nobody is saying the ONLY way. Today, I will grind only, no dry, even though the humidity level is around 90%. I'll report back later.

T UPDATES...
Battery door in the Timber design had to change. It needed to get thinner, sleeker, and is now held in place with six magnets. Very thin magnets are installed in the door itself, while the magnets in the Timber body are deep. The door ends at the oven, just where the thumb lands, and sits proud about 1/16. The strong magnet seal can be easily broken by bending or retracting the thumb a quarter inch along the top of the door. It snaps hard back into place when you let go (trade secret on how I get that to happen consistently).

I'm also testing out some new battery terminals that require less clearance. Functionally, I love the current terminals, which took a while to nail down (in the Classic). They apply pressure along the long axis of the battery, which requires clearance for the spring action. Another terminal design that I looked into early on was not spring loaded, required a more precise and tighter fit, and something that my skills can now handle. If I can get this to happen, it will be an improvement across the board for all Vapwood products, and a possibly shorter Timber. More R & D for me...

MY CURRENT PREFERRED SET UP
@nonbeliever I ordered some 8 mm tubes, but currently I love using the 10 mm ID, glass lined. I have two, and it gives me the perfect draw resistance to suit my vaping style.

Just read some cool info on dry throat and coughing. I find that oils tend to make me cough (NY State dispensaries only carry oils). I've begun to hold the vapor in my mouth, then carburete in some atmospheric air through my nose - let this all mix in, maybe cool or moisten for a second, then pull into my lungs. I tried this with weed in my Timber, and was pleasantly surprised at how cool and smooth the vapor was, with virtually zero irritation of my air way (very good thing). In my personal effort to pursue smooth and cool, as I've been smoking and vaping for over 40 years (as well as being a NYC firefighter for over 20 years), I thought I'd share how my latest practice - another personal preference. For me, this is optional with weed, mandatory for oils.

An interesting quote I came across...
“The 19th century was the age of steel, and the 20th was the age of concrete,” says Michael Green, a Vancouver-based architect and leading proponent of wood building construction. “This century is the new age of timber.” The problem is not the science, he says, it’s changing people’s opinions about what is possible.

I also use a stem “hack” I use the stock stem with a glass Charlie Dynavap spiked cooling stem inside. This greatly increases my draw resistance ( I have a naturally heavy draw ) my performance has increased so much it floors me every time I use the elite now. MUCH more even roasting. I used to have to rotate the stem every draw and I would still get a spot of unvaped herb the size of a BB in the center. The Elite also now uses less power per draw saving me battery life as well.

This has brought my Elite from my arm chair vape to #1 in rotation.

@Bravesst you may find using the more humid herb results in an even harsher vape for the first few draws.

I recently switched from 62% bovida’s to 58% as per a suggestion from the Canadian Cannabis community on reddit. The consensus is to use 62% for joints. 58% for vaping. I can tell the difference on the first draw using the 58% you get a fuller smoother hit on first draw. Where the 62% seems harsher on the first draw with less vapor production. It’s like the first draw is inhaling hot terpy steam and it irritates the throat. This seems to be my experience YMMV.

That is exactly what I've always found. From years of firefighting, I know that steam (water vapor) is hot. When you first put water on fire, steam generation makes conditions worse. It has always been my goal to eliminate excess moisture because steam hurts. Cool info, 58% bovedas will be on the way to Vapwood shortly!!!
EDIT: ordered and will be here tomorrow...

Good evening...
More, more, more R & D on Timber.

GOAL - shrink bottom section 8 mm's, increase upper section 2 mm's, overall shrinkage 6 mm's or 1/4 inch
RESULT - SUCCESS
20190821-171158.jpg

20190821-173834.jpg

Unit on left and right are today's work, middle unit is from two days ago. The middle unit had been bumped up to 5 5/8 from a brief 5 1/2 attempt (with the full sized bottom, and coil to tube was just too tight). 50 mm top / 80 mm bottom / wider placement of vent holes (one in each corner now, 90 degrees apart). These will be functional Friday (no shop tomorrow). You are looking at a smaller mortise for both the battery and board at 70 mm's. This necessitated new battery terminals that don't need clearance between battery and wood, albeit the mortise needed to be just under a mm wider. I hope it's wide enough, but if not, I can easily open a hair. The new terminals will hold the battery in place very securely with clips.

Those orange 14 gauge wires are coming from the coil, converted from 18 gauge right at the disk that holds it in place. I snake those wires down and back up (180 degree bend that you see) to where they connect to the board at the very top. By leaving the wires about 4 inches long, the board is removed from the coil heat both geographically and electrically. Instead of a wire box (like the LB Elite and LB Classic), all wire is housed in the space between board and battery, which is wide open until I install the battery compartment floor. I may have to install the floor, before final connections with these terminals, as they are bottom mount.

Quick first impressions of the Timber Elite:

-Damn this thing is beautiful. The Black and Tan design is sharp, and it feels so good in the hand, like it belongs there.

-My main point of comparison is the Splinter Z. I assumed the heat up time would be about the same, but the heater in the Timber truly is instantaneous. Using the same Splinter Z cooling stems on both devices, the Timber vapor was much cooler and not as visually apparent. The Z blew bigger clouds, but with a longer heat up and with dryer, hotter vapor at the same temps (the Z is also on a DNA mod). Flavor was comparable on both, so top notch.

-The device got mildly warm doing temps between 330F and 380F. Not significantly warm, but noticeable (and enjoyable versus on a metal mod).

-I am extremely medicated, to the extent that a true all convection vapes should get me medicated.

-The photos over exaggerate the height. My Z on a single 18650 mod is taller than the Timber. I will take comparison photos later.

I am loving the instant feedback from the device. I can just lightly tap the trigger to pulse the heat as needed while I draw. This one is a keeper and IMO manages to top the Splinter Z by a few hairs.

Thank you so much for the initial impressions! You're slowly making my torn thoughts easier to manage as it looks like timber is the way to go. On a side note, has anyone used their LBE or Timber with a water piece? I really would like to see how it compares to like a stempod with water filtration.

I plan to use it through water soon. I can’t compare to the Stempod but I will compare it to the Z.

The XL8R Jr in the last pic is slightly longer than the Mistvape wooden stem in the Timber, but I think it illustrates how the Timber looks in comparison.

Between the two, the Timber feels better in the hand without a doubt. Easy to grip in multiple ways.

Great pics @Monk Debate - thank you! At six inches it is still shorter than a 510 device + mod box, and we've shrunk another 15 mm's. There are still a couple more of those early builds left. In an effort to get the word out, and see more reviews like this, I hope to see someone take advantage of this early build sale: $200 plus shipping bare bones for the tall boys - 2 left, cherry base, walnut oven.

After designing and building all day every day, sometimes I'm afraid I'll loose prospective. With two Timber Elites sold, and two reviews echoing EXACTLY what I've been saying, the feedback has been great. I'm working on a few more ideas before going into production for September. The Timber has been an opportunity to take everything that needed a bit of an update, and just do it.
  • Coil relocation
  • Coil to tube distance
  • Battery / board mortise adjustments
  • Soldered connections from board to coil, board to terminals
  • Battery terminal upgrade
  • Wiring upgrade
  • Vent hole relocation
And there's more in the R & D category

My biggest problem at this juncture in Vapwood's development is time. I'm at a tipping point where I'd like to teach for the FDNY for only a few hours / one or two days per week, and spend 5 or 6 six full days in the shop, but I live on Long Island, NY, and it's common to need multiple incomes just to live here. Today I have to work in the city all day, no shop. I'll be working in my head on new ideas, especially while commuting, and back at it full scale tomorrow. Deep thinking is where all the real work gets done anyhow.

I can attest that $200 for one of these is an absolute steal. Even knowing these aren’t the final production versions, the vaping experience is highly refined. And $200 for a top tier artisanal and handcrafted vaporizer is an exceptional deal.

I'm back. Honestly, I can't put the Elite down. I used the LB a lot but when the Elite came and I tried it - it was all over. Simply an amazing Vape. Has anyone tried the Timber yet? I'm thinking of the Cherry/Walnut version and I'd also can't wait until the 510 mod comes out. That should be fun to play with too.

@mike: You rock. Love your work!!

Okay, so the Timber through water is truly magical. I set TC to 385 and let it rip on my bubbler. Big clouds, total smoothness. Not a hint of harshness, and the flavor lasted so long. Even when I kicked it up to 395 for the last few hits, still totally smooth.

The ABV looks extremely evenly cooked. I’m finding the Timber to produce much more consistent ABV than the Splinter Z. That’s with no stirring of the bowl or rotating the stem. I found even with stirring and rotating, the Z couldn’t produce consistent, regular ABV. And the effects, well, they are as strong and as enjoyable as any I’ve had.

This is staying, the Splinter is going. It’s that simple.

I'm so excited. I ordered the Cherry/Walnut version (gorgeous photos). How many of you love holding this???? It's incredible. I just can't believe how remarkable a device this is compared to all the overly commercial units being sold on every street corner. I hope more and more people discover this wonderful vape and get hooked.

The nice thing is in a couple of weeks or a month - I surprise will show up in my mail!! I'll be like - what's this!!! COOL!!!!

The discussion in this thread is awesome. I love reading the updates and all the ideas. Keep on rockin' everyone.....

Yup, the Timber is turning out to be a *shout it from the rooftops* vape. I'm very pleased with the way things worked out. I set out to improve ergonomics for people with smaller hands, and wound up boosting performance at a lower price. I love the pics of height comparisons to 510 devices. Timber's coil is luxuriously housed in a 2 x 2 inch walnut block. Two inches is all it needs as it pairs to the body seamlessly, without the need for a 510 connector and all the extra heat stealing metal, and with soldered connections from coil to board. This is a streamlined design, with all excess eliminated.

Today, I will be working on a couple of final assemblies with the new battery contacts, smaller cover plates, smaller compartments, shorter unit. It'll be challenging because it's new, but soon to be routine, probably more straightforward.

Thank you all for supporting the Elite, both LB and Timber designs. I'll do everything I can to produce the best product possible, and put it in your hands as quickly as possible. Thankfully, right now, there is only a short turn around time, as the demand falls within my abilities to fulfill. I was describing my business to a friend yesterday, and how popularity is rising. He asked me the *million dollar question*, "So how many can you build?" Maybe the question should be, "How many do I want to build?" Once the finishing touches are put on Timber E's over the next few days, September production begins. If Timber continues to catch on, we may find out just how many LB's and Timbers I can build.

UPDATE
First terminal NG. working on my next choice, and getting good results. Sometimes it works in paper, not in practice.

Okay, good news first. The original LB battery terminals work really well in Timber, they just needed 75 mm's. The terminals I was trying out were supposed to work in 70 mm's, allowing us to shrink to almost 5.25 inches in height. Unfortunately, the new terminal designs did not work out. I had these two prototypes just about final assembled before I realized the terminals weren't happening. I did back plates, cover plates, beeswax - argh... For now, Timber just grew 5 mm's, back to approximately just under 5.5 inches tall. Unfortunately, I put 10 to 15 hours into this pair, and this is the typical crazyness of R & D (think mad scientist). These 2 lower sections are simply too short, period. I may be able salvage the upper sections and coils. After all is said and done, 5.39" isn't bad. Bottom section is now 75 / 6 / 6 or 87 mm's, and the top section is an even 50 mm's for a total of 137 mm's or 5.39 inches. It's all about the 65 mm battery.

Of course Timber is a new build, and I learned more than just that my original LB terminals were already my best bet for our all wood battery compartment. I became obsessed with shrinkage. Here's where the frustration comes in, I won't be back in the shop until Sunday, and I'll be sitting with this lack of success until then. To me, it's maddening to not end on a high note. I did tweak the top of the bottom section, where the coil and board meet, making it much shorter, and this most of where our height savings came from.

Looks like I'm gonna start building September's batch, LB Elite, Timber Elites, and LB Classics, and full blown R & D is shut down for now, but we're always open to improving something. After that happens, I am going to build a very large Timber inventory. Stock is easier to come by for the Timber shape, and I plan on getting quite a few int0 pre-assembly.

I need to take a deep breath, and just crank my Timber...

I’m getting some spectacularly flavorful hits with the Timber. I feel like the wood in the airpath adds a certain subtle sweetness that glass airpaths lack. I’ll have to order some roasting tubes soon to experience an all wood airpath offers.

I've been reading this thread lately and occasionally see glass in the wooden mouthpiece. I keep wondering why use wood at all in the mp? But @Monk Debate you're saying the wood is adding positives to the flavor?!
Does the mp mate with 10mm, 14mm water piece?
Also, I'm wondering @P.A.M. @Monk Debate @madhockeydad @nonbeliever and @anybody I missed, when talking about flavor and performance, what vaporizers are you comparing the timber elite to??

Thanks for the input

@Bravesst great work. Pretty unit you've built. I applaud your diligence and transparency on your project! I'll keep watch on this thread.
