Elite Functional Prototype #1
The chip is mounted upside down, I need to learn the programming and flip the screen. This puts the fire button in the in the Classic position. I was planning on using set screws to mount the plate but wasn't happy with the fit I was getting. Not sure how that will wind up, but maybe set screws, maybe some type of cool headed screw. searching now. Hitting on it now, quite cool. I'm sure I'll learn a lot from Prototype #1. Hopefully, this unit will teach me exactly what needs to happen to make this thing perfect and start mass producing.

It's official. Lil' Bud Elite by Vapwood - now on sale at vapwood.com

Mike,

Wow outta the blocks and the Elite prototype looks great!

If the firmware is anything like the Tubo Evic just hold down
the + and - buttons at the same time while unit is off and the
display will flip.

Maybe some small dark knurled flat thumbscrews for the faceplate
mount to match the buttons?

btw,
got the backplates in the mail the other day and as usual the
fit is spot on!
thanks for your time and effort in dealing with my request.

Hey All,

Not sure if the you can flip the screen like that, lots to learn with the software. I did figure out how to flip it with the computer app, which is pretty amazing. You can take a hit and watch the graph It will monitor every aspect of the hit, and basically teach you how to pull, if you were having any trouble figuring it out.

Here it is, in it's rough prototype condition. I'm learning how to use it, the software options, diagnostics. Very cool...

Looks awesome man, I know you have only just got this thing up and running but what's your first impressions of the vape experience?

Is the DNA chip a good driver of that awesome coil?

I have to admit that wood face plate looks pretty cool.

Would thumb screws make the faceplate interchangable?

How is performance? Do you think you can get production units any smaller?

Holy Fucking Shit!!!

I'm not saying there aren't a couple of minor issues, but I don't really want to put it down. I barely scratched the surface of what this beast can accomplish. I've been following @Alan's advice, setting it on 33 watts and 390 degrees. I've been going back and forth between nickel 200 and ss316, but nickel seems to work better.

My plan is to keep *practicing*, flushing out issues, learn the software so I can push the Elite to its limits. I want to start another batch from scratch over the next day or two, with some minor spec tweaks.

This is a critical point in the Elite's development, not time to rush things, but rather to make sure I get it right the first time!!!

Holy Fucking Shit!!!

That was the exact same reaction I had when I moved my iHeat from my Evic vtwo mini to a DNA 250 mod. It went from a good little on demand vape to something thats on the next level. It hasn't came off the DNA since. It's completely dethroned my OG splinter. Really looking forward to an Elite pocketable version!

That's what we like to read!

Sounds like the Elite is gonna be amazing.

Totally agree, it's well worth the test time to route out any issues and to identify the optimum operating baseline.

Thanks for the update Mike.

I prettied up my unit, finished it a bit, and you know what that means. Prototype number one, LB Elite unit X, where it all starts, is working really well. I'm immersed in the software, but do have a couple of design tweaks to apply - very minor. I had a great idea, almost an epiphany. @Alan has to get the first, well second, Elite prototype. The master needs to take a peek at what he's dreamt up, come to life, and impart his wisdom, finalization will follow.

Initial settings that seem to work, but we're just scratching the surface
  • Nickel
  • 32 ohms
  • 32 watts
  • 375 degrees
  • temp protection on
  • preheat on
  • punch 2

Spent the day refining the cover plate, as the rest of the unit will be basic woodworking. The cover plate will really determine function and longevity, as well as the final touch on appearance. The build process, once I get it down, might be a bit simpler than the Classic was at first (now it's beyond basic). Everything has to be done in just a certain way and in a exact sequence, and after ten or twelve builds, it all becomes second nature.

The software is simple, but there's lot of options, combinations. I'm trying to get to the best possible starting place, but this is something you the end user could also do. The USB hooks you up to the Escribe program, and it monitors pretty much everything, as well as lets you set everything. What I like is it's really easy to set up and monitor on the actual device. You don't have to sit at your laptop.

It's about a half an inch wider, and it's not getting any smaller. That's what it take to get it all in there, in this side by side format. It's the same height and thickness as the Classic. The bottom fire button is pretty awesome, as it makes it easy, *Classic Like* to operate. The feel of the buttons is very positive, free, but firm. The fact that they are wood and hand made is incredible.

The cover plates take some time, it's like building another vape and adding it to the Classic instead of a simple switch. But the *modular* cover plate is what makes this doable - we've done it here. If the cover plate was easy, everybody would do it.

I am having a freaking blast testing out the Elite. I'm literally blown away by the software and what it can do. Like I said, lots of options, choices, and I'm trying to narrow things down.

The dynamic feedback of watching your current hit happen on a graph is something I wasn't expecting. It kind of teaches you how to draw perfectly. This is totally affected by settings (coil material, watts, temp, resistance, pre-heat, temp protection, punch). For whatever reason, the SS316 setting doesn't display current temp in the device monitor, but it does in Nickel and SS430. I have been experimenting with SS430 at 30 watts, 34 ohms, and 420 degrees with temp protection, preheat, punch at 5. I have the cut off set to 20 seconds. I'm hitting on cool vapor. The hits are very quick and clean, with amazing flavor. The ABV is even, dry, not too dark. I think the super even heating reduces the necessity to stir. I'm using a short glass lined tube. The results are about as good as it gets. I am impressed at what this thing can do so early on in the testing. I'm encouraged we will have nothing but smooth sailing. I think there is a huge difference in Vapwood 2019, and my ability to produce a quality product. Most of the work was already done with the development / refinement of the Classic. The modular board / cover plate married the Classic to the DNA75c, the rest will be history.

Congratulations on putting together an Elite prototype. Well done. I was confident you would be able to pull it off. It is a milestone for on-demand portable wooden vaporizers. We were the first to take them to the next level with the built-in DNA board.
I would be honored to have on Elite prototype to enjoy using. The low overall height of the unit / tube is very similar to my Witcher w/ an iHeat, but it will have temperature control where the Witcher only works in watt mode. Plus, the Elite is all wood which is really cool.
Glad that the buttons are working well. The ones in the photo are cocobolo. They can be made from almost any material that I can turn. Will need to get some more made for you.
What type of wood/material buttons would everyone like to have?

@P.A.M. - Thanks. Glad you like the buttons.

Looking good returning from my camping trip this week. Really awesome to see the prototype is up and running! Congrats Mike on reaching this milestone.
Don’t have the link in front of me but the djlsb videos on the dna75c and escribe is really worth watching. Now that you played around with escribe that video really is a great overview or what setting do.

This is truly more than I expected. In the end, there are probably 100 ways to set up an Elite.
Watts
Temp (temp protection can be disabled as an option)
Coil Material
Pre Heat (and temp of pre heat)
Resistance
Length of hit
Punch
Replay

Different combos work.
Right now I'm on 33 watts, 550 F, SS316, Pre Heat on 75 watts), resistance 32 ohms, hit limit 20 seconds, no replay, punch 2. It's also possible to combust with the right settings, but if you limit temp or watts, you can prevent it completely. The thing is, different settings work well together. I'd be lying if I said I can just rattle off what works with what. Experimentation is definitely in order.

I like to be able to get close to combustion, but never combust. I like when the ABV is dry, thoroughly cooked, but not black or charred at all. The chip is an incredible tool that seems to have been made to be put in a Lil' Bud. The pairing of Lil' Bud and the DNA75C is a winner all around.

@Alan, Master Vape Jedhi, I'm proud to be able to carry out this amazing vision. I have a feeling the Elite is going to change everything when it comes to portable, on demand, wooden vapes. Superior function and craftmanship will set this vape apart.

I'm thinking hard and dark buttons. Since the entire unit is wood, my vote is wood. The darker set, of the two you sent is perfect. I guess a light option is nice as well.

Once my buttons arrive, it'll be time to get serious with building a few prototypes to send out. I say prototypes, but every unit from here on in will be completely finished, but changes may happen, as it did with the Classic, rapidly. I don't really think that will be the case, as this thing is pretty nailed down already, but small changes are bound to happen.

I think the unit design, specs hold up pretty good and can remain. I'm still working on two issues, not actual problems, just design decisions. One is how to fix the cover plate to the unit. I have a few options, but I'm trying to be conservative on time, price.

Looking at the graph you posted looks like you can crank up wattage a bit. It’s only going pull what’s needed to reach the set the heat your drawing off.

Even at 50 watts you are only ever going use the amount wattage if you are take a huge draw. Should be able to maintain temp within couple degrees of what it is set at. If tempature dropping from set level wattage needs increased.

The monitor is helpfully here try setting it at 50 watts. Then watching graph see if your able to drop below the set tempature by taking a huge draw. If so then go higher in wattage till you can’t.

Preheat helps get to tempature a bit faster but you risk overshooting the set Temp.

So resistance is around .33 on the elites? Also what is going be stock stem size 19/22? If you can include a stock stem and screen with my prohotype I like to make sure the fcshare file is using the stock settings.

Had good luck with this theme should work fine for the dna75c too, just change it to one battery before up loading to the elite.

Once I’m home home planning on updating the fc files. Hopefully have the elite and new iheat to work with it’s going be some fun times !

Watching this thread with much intent. Will custom wood options be available ? Would love a koa unit. @Alan has turned out a koa masterpiece for me in the form of a iHeat. Hoping koa faceplate and buttons would be an option. If it is hit me in the DM.

this looks way too good to pass up... all the power/etc of a 510mod vape but a less clunky form factor. i was gonna buy a dna mod and a 510 vape anyway but honestly no point when i know this exists...

curious about the screen used to cover the heater - will i need to worry about bits falling into the heater ever? or is it fine enough of a mesh to be good?

also, i got a walnut but i'm sure customs/exotics of these would sell amazingly. very excited to see how these come out, thanks for your work gentlelads

@Dubmonkey , I think mike should have straight grain Koa for a Elite unit, matched with some highly figured stuff to make a plate like you said. that is would be sweet.

@muunch . The screen that covers the heater is very well fitted , sits 90degrees flush , the abc does not get caught up on the side or in the screen. It does happen from time to time a flake of abv will remain on screen but it's usually easily removed by simply blowing in the unit or flicking it away with a toothpick . Nothing falls through it either . I've been using a Lil'Bud daily for almost a year now (joined ship January 10, '18, received my first LB march 16 '18) . There is no residue build-up or abv stuck to heater screen at all .

Being able to perfectly roast each bowl with the Elite DNA such as Mike describes will help keep bowl screens cleaner with less cleaning maintenance required when compared to unregulated ondemand vapes .

cool, thanks for the info!

also, i didn't get a cooling tube w my matching stem... bc im really holding out for some spiked glass cooling stems, or even spiked inserts for the wood stems! not sure if this is possible to source, but would definitely like these as an option if possible

Good morning. I know there is lots of interest different woods. To keep my sanity, I need to work with stable woods that I'm familiar with - cherry, maple, walnut for the time being. Exotics are awesome, but usually difficult to work with in small parts. I'm building an Ambrosia Maple Classic, and the extra work, fussing, sanding, planing, drilling to get what happens easily with cherry, adds additional issues that I just can't deal with at this stage in the build process - soon. Some of the more exotic woods can be a bitch to work with, resulting in tear out (wood workers enemy). A unit that has hours invested in it can just destroyed in a second because of router tear out with woods like Purple Heart. But soon!

Right now I need to build a second prototype and send to @Alan for testing. I have one more set of buttons, and I'm going to use them and try and get a prototype built today. This is a lot to figure out software wise. The good news is, it will work in many configurations. Right now I'm dialing back, keeping it simple in Watts mode, set at 33 watts. It's like a Classic with a cap and battery level indicator. When testing, it's natural to hold it with the screen facing you, and hit the fire button with the thumb. It takes like no effort. After all the figuring, constant watts mode is actually pretty cool. So for anybody thinking the Elite is too complicated, Watts mode makes it pretty simple. Press button, inhale.

@Dubmonkey , sorry dude , I tried , no soup for you :\

Yup , watts mode is simple and easy. turn it down to 27-28 watts to start with a few low temp. tasty rips . Then crank it up by a couple watts or straight up to 33ish for full spectrum .

Doesn't sound like you've played in low wattage/temp settings much yet , Mike. It's where the beauty of the Elite stands Being able to really choose the power and strength of every hit .
