Discontinued The Grasshopper

Am I the only one who placed an order for new batteries but have not received them yet?

I ordered on 1/23/2019. Anyone order after that date and already received theirs?
Oh hell yeah...I ordered four of them on 24 Oct and got them a few days later.

Now, I did do as our Hopper rep here advised and sent an email to support with my order number in order for it to be expedited.

But, sad to say....it would appear that your order from 11 months ago fell into the Hopper Labs Triangle where many things seem to get lost.

Sorry for your situation, man.

I have zero expectations to get a full refund for the order placed on Nov. 12. I would be surprised to
get a reply to my refund request. Can't say that I don't understand...... If my house just burned down, it would take me a bit before I could replace my buddies tools that were lost in the conflagration. At least he would be assured of getting replacements.

@mario I do think it’s appropriate because at the end of the day it’s a business transaction and you certainly didn’t get what you paid for and likely never will. You literally just got it and that’s going to matter to your bank, most of these buyers protection plans have a certain amount of time in which you have to act. I’d just briefly explain the whole situation the bank, using generic words like device and product rather than vape.

Yeah that I think the direction I will have to take. I'll give them a few days to possibly respond to my email, but I think I will probably just take action on my own after that. The device is useless now and I don't think I should be stuck with it since there is literally no idea of when/where it might ever be fixed or have the batteries replaced or even made ever again.

I'm really sad to hear the news about the fire. As others have said, the important thing is that nobody was physically hurt.

Regarding the questions of how it could smoulder but be high heat, don't forget that they are not fire experts, likely don't yet have a firm idea of exactly what happened and how, and have just been through a very traumatic event. Give them a break and benefit of the doubt. If there were ever a time for some kindness towards Hopper Labs, this is it.

I wonder what will happen next for them? Let's keep our fingers crossed that they have great insurance and can get everything they need to get things up and running in due course. If not, maybe they can sell their amazing tech to another company to continue the grasshopper as a no-longer-independent thing.

Regarding the new batteries, I can't remember exactly, but it could be that some were still being shipped to Hopper Labs, or (at least some) were in an unaffected part of the building, hence the recertification possibility. Let's keep our fingers crossed for that, as at least having peace of mind about new batteries, and more for sale, would be a start. Needless to say, this is a very sad example of why people like not being tied in to proprietary batteries.

Good luck Hopper Labs in your recovery, I'm rooting for you! We'll all be looking forward to updates to hear what the state of things are and what your plans for the future are now.

There's some pics of the "labs" in this video:

Doesn't seem to be any kind of fire prevention or too much safety stuff (no fire extinguishers for example)

Is that the old building or new one they recently moved into? I recall they moved recently but don’t remember when. Kinda hard to tell/see any fire prevention apparatus in the video. I’d find it hard to believe they’d be allowed to operate without any or an alert system to the city and fire department as stated above, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were in the gray area and not having any or at least working at the time. Time will tell if we ever know the real story. It’s a shame but luckily there were no injuries.

Gotta start looking for a new vape to replace my Hopper though nothing really compares in the portables space for me. Sigh... TGIF to all.:peace:

I think if everyone keeps bombarding them with refund requests at a time like this the chances are they will say fuck it and disappear.

IDK about that but it definitely seems like people working against their own best interests. Especially the people doing bank chargebacks instead of attempting refunds through regular channels.

This really couldn't happen at a worse time with the stigmatization of "vaping" right now. If it's a paper weight, it's a paper weight... might as well throw your support behind them and hope they can rise back up again.

Right on. When are folks going to realize this is literally a “three guys in a garage” business? Not some giant corporation like Apple.
If this was always advertised as a little business and not portrayed as a big company would people be so rash?

I mean, GHL deserves plenty of criticism (and they've got it)... but it sounds like people are doing chargebacks while planning on keeping the unit.

What kind of entitled shit is that?!?!

A lot of people want to kick these guys while they're down though.

Can anyone find news about this fire on the web?
I also emailed for a refund for batts and the new never released charger. $156. Time will tell
Someone posted a local/Boulder link a couple of pages back. That’s all I’ve read officially about it. I haven’t tried searching for anything about it. :peace:

So, let me start by offering my condolences to Hopper, who indeed do appeared to have worked hard this past year to resolve long standing product and company performance issues. I am very grateful and happy that nobody was hurt. To me, that is first and foremost. Fuck stuff...it can be replaced. People...eh, not so much.

I did get the email as I have just received four batteries, one of which they replaced because it was flaky to recharge...showed as an open but if fiddled about a bit you could get it to charge to a limited extent. I was happy with their response of just sending me out another one.

But there is much to this that doesn't make a great deal of sense to me but I try (emphasis on "try") to be fact based and not buy into conspiracy theories (like its an insurance scam) before any valid evidence. Right now, its all in the wind to me.

But, who the hell would insure a manufacturing facility that does not have fire detection (and I don't just mean a locally audible alarm) and suppression system? Remember, they had their own board stuffing machines which says to me that they also had wave soldering capability. I can't imagine anybody stupid enough to allow this without fire suppression. As a matter of fact, I have a hard time thinking that Boulder code doesn't absolutely require remote alarm detection (to a monitoring center...like ADT, right) and active suppression

I note that someone above referenced them saying it was a "smoldering" fire....but it was hot enough in there to destroy manf equipment, RMA GHs, etc. If it was that hot, then it was hot enough to set off alarms and suppression if such was present at all. @biohacker , any views on this as a fireman?

I don't know, but smoldering often means a lack of oxygen which is resolved sometimes explosively by opening a door. I'm glad nobody got hurt during this incident.

Also, the battery thing makes little sense to me. They say that the fire dept's initial finding was "an electrical issue in the building" was the source of the fire. That does not sound like batteries spontaneously catching fire or blowing up.

If it was the Li batteries, of which I would presume that they had a ton of after receipt of their long delayed shipment, I should think this would be very apparent. But that seems to not be the case.

But they are nonethless telling us, after a VERY long back order wait for batteries, to toss them. Hence, we may as well toss our GHs into the sock draw as they are useless without a good battery.

But then they say "Once the battery is remade or the safety has been fully re-certified to our satisfaction, we will replace these batteries free of charge."

This implies that they still have the bulk of their recent battery order in hand. Perhaps stored in a different location?

And how do you re-certify a shipment of batteries. Sample testing? Not all that reassuring to the blokes whose battery wasn't sample tested. I really dunno what they mean and suspect they don't either.

My suspicion is that they are shell shocked, needed to react quickly, and that the history, current situation, and future plans will become more apparent with a little bit of time. To me, the "throw the batteries away" is mostly CYA as I see nothing in what they have conveyed that would indicate this as being necessary.

I'm with you on this one... Nothing about the story makes me think the batteries are ticking time bombs. Having said that, I coincidentally ordered a 2X2 battery holder and caps from @Ratchett and should get them today. At least I'll be able to store them in a way that prevents inappropriate touching...

Thanks! That’s indeed intriguing, and comparable to an ArGo or Linx Gaia in terms of form and function (convection heating). The Linx comes with a magnetic cap to protect the glass stem which I like. The Tinymight is almost $100 more than both however, but it’s a compelling vape! Research continues in earnest ahead of Black Friday deals... :peace:

Have you ever even done a chargeback?

I don't know anything about the Gaia, but the Argo (and all Arizer portables) are heated via conduction.

As for the TinyMight, it looks pretty dope, the early reviews are quite stellar, however potential uneven heating turns me off of it, as does the nuts/bolts metal cooling unit in the vapour path.
