Discontinued The Grasshopper

OK, I'm new here, but skimming over a few pages back has me wondering: Are there any Grasshopper owners that have received their unit, used it for a while (let's say, a few months) and NOT had any problems with it?

Yes, I know they have a lifetime warranty and they seem to be good about honoring it. And I know the Grasshopper is awesome when it works. I've heard all the rave reviews, that's why I ordered one.

But judging from what I'm reading on this forum, the failure rate on these units is damn near 100%. But maybe that's because these forum posts are not representative of all GHL customers...?

Just wondering if there's ANYONE out there that has Been using their GH for a while, and haven't had any reliability issues yet. Do they exist?

I'm sure there are many, usually those with problems are the squeaky wheel. I've had mine, a SS and Ti, for 8 months without issues. I have never once even tried the included chargers and these are not used as my daily driver. The only thing I don't like is the increasing space between the body and MP, when tightly screwed.

I got a Ti and an SS in June. Gets very hot on occasion but no warranty action yet for me.

i'd guess that the "increasing space between mouthpiece and body" could be easily remedied. It sounds likely that your screen has begun untightening itself. Get the precision tweezers from CVS as has been recommended here. Get your unit nice and warm...then use the tweezers to tighten the screen back into place. If it were me...while you are doing this...I'd remove the screen completely...clean...then put everything back. I bet you'll be good as new.

Had mine since the end of Feb.
Not my only vape, but I do use it daily.

Please don't let this jinx me...but,..
No problems for me.

I charge with the supplied cable or in a D2 depending on my mood...

The space may caused by loose screen, as @jabba suggests, but could also just be gunk in the mouthpiece threads. Solution is about the same, get the tweezers...you can back the screen in & out to help clear the threads, using iso. I've also had success clearing the worst of the gunk gently with a dental poking tool, so not having to mess with the screen.

Yep, I'm one. No gloating from me as who knows what the future may bring...but my bronze Ti hasn't misbehaved and the back end stays cool as a cucumber. I think I need to now sacrifice a small mammal to the vapes gods for my hubris in bragging about how good my GH has been. Don't want to piss them off LOL

P.S. - I also only charge with a Nitecor D4 charger and have not used the including charging cable. I have four batteries and rotate through them. Hope this helps. LOVE my GH.

Good to know there are some GH users who haven't had any issues yet. Also good to know that there are external battery chargers that can accept non-standard size rechargeables... I guess I assumed that because the GH battery is a unique shape/size, that it wouldn't fit 3rd party chargers. Looks like I need to look into this Nitecore charger thing...

I think a little perspective is appropriate, as I have had to keep reminding myself as well...

While I do consider FC a great space for our VAS expression, there must be but a wee percentage of hopper owners on this forum as compared to the rest of the world. GHL is shipping "1500 units" per month; I don't think we even count as a "sample lot" for a general estimate of time-between-failures for the device. :2c:

EDIT: @Purple Lava Lamp , I haven't used the GH charger either, at all, except to make sure it worked. I actually put one of them in my car's glove box just in case I get caught out without a spare battery. Nitecore makes a good product; I use the D4 since I have 5 batteries in rotation.

To add to your positive numbers, I got 2 gh's. A ss and ti, which was a gift. The ti gets regular, daily use and has had no problems. We both have never charged using the cable and use the Nightcore charger instead.

Now, the ss is mine and I'll admit it crapped out and ghl sent me a replacement body. It's been all good since then.

And the warranty process was pretty painless and fast! I had the replacement body in 5 days!

I received a new Ti body today, which is the same finish as the shinier, darker model that arrived with my pre-order for a friend in August. It looks a lot nicer than the OG, except my mouthpiece really contrasts now. But - it fits perfectly, no more raised edges like my last replacement body.

It's nice being hoppered yet again :smug:

Started baking myself earlier than usual today, not much on my schedule....

I keep a piece of Blue Tac handy - a blob about the size of the back end - that I use (over and over) every other time I replace a battery. Consistently, I've been enjoying stellar performance from both Ti's, at their limits, with narry a mildly warm backend occurring that I can even recall in weeks. I'm atheist so I don't believe in jinxes :brow:.

So as I was doing this, I was pleasantly struck by the thought that ever since Blue Tac had been mentioned here, there's been no posting anymore of gunk or residue or oxidation.
And yet, what does that "rest of the world" do? Does even GHL know about Blue Tac? Surely we weren't the only ones with black stuff issues. I haven't lurked anywhere else much to see, but I just thought it was cool that our little group has overcome a nagging red herring during out explorations.

KUDOS to whoever brought up the Blue Tac in the first place!:tup::tup: It hath made all the difference.

OK, I'm new here, but skimming over a few pages back has me wondering: Are there any Grasshopper owners that have received their unit, used it for a while (let's say, a few months) and NOT had any problems with it?

March 2014 preorder (SS model). Received Address confirmation then shipping confirmation around early June 2016.

Hopper worked fine, but suspected possible issue with back-end right from the start. Requested a replacement backend (keeping the original body). New one has been working perfectly ever since.

I use my hopper at least twice a day, so that's almost 4 months of daily use. I don't abuse it (I have other vapes for high temp water filtered hits). I use it solely for stealthy hits while out and about (and sometimes on the back porch)

I have 4 batteries (all GHB1 models) - all came with the hopper originally. They hold up for about 2 oven loads on average. I never fully drain them to flashing red if possible. I try to swap them out after two loads. Always charged on an external Nitecore D2 charger. Never using the USB 1.0 charger.

Is this the perfect vaporizer? No, no vaporizer is.

But am I happy with my grasshopper? Absolutely - I can't imagine living without it.

Luckily I have had no further issues with the performance - it works when it should and doesn't when it shouldn't.

I have the blue science rubber mud, the Xtar VC4 charger, and my first Sativa strain. Now I'm just waiting for my Grasshopper. Haven't seen a tracking update since the 4th. For someone like me who constantly checks tracking info on any package I get, it is agonizing. Luckily I also got my first shatter, so I've been living the concentrate life the last few days. I also have my wishlist ready and waiting on @Ratchett's site.

I said I don't believe in jinxes, and I still don't, but I've noticed something over the past few days with one of my Ti's.

Though it's performing perfectly, I've noticed that the "ticking" sound remains after the red heat-up, and throughout the solid blue session. Anyone else have that happen? It's almost all the time, but you know, sometimes the way it's held in the hand the sound may not be so noticeable.

The ticking is normal - that's the sound of power pulsing through the heater (the heater doesn't remain on 100% of the time - it only clicks on when needed to bump up the temperature to desired setting)

Hey Ratch...

But how come it's constant now, even when it is at temperature? It didn't used to do this before, and my other Ti of the same "age" doesn't do this.

wait.. i have been in a coma a little while.. are you guys suggesting the GH charger is causing problemes.. which can be fixed by using a nitecore something 3rd party external charger ?

Everyday i want to order a GH but the more i read the worst it gets...

The audible sound is most likely energy pulses, however it's not via the heater. I have experienced loud ticking when one of my heaters wasn't working, I'd get blue lights immediately, no heat and loud ticking sounds.
My guess is it has something to do with the large voltage running through the potentiometer in the back end, or some other variable voltage caused sound. It sounds like a relay, but it can't be that as it's not consistent.
I guess there's chance that despite the anecdotal observations that the sound correlates with better performance, the clicking sound is wasted energy and may not be ideal. I've never had a problem during the instances I've had the loudest clicking with a working hopper however, I'd only worry about noticeable degredation to performance.

...
I'm doubtful that there should be any concern over the included charger. They had some issues with early models, but they are well and truly sorted now, there's been at least 2 revisions and now there's a new model.
It's far more convenient to charge multiple batteries at once with an external charger though. This allows constant tether free vaping and having power on demand, rather than waiting an hour for the unit to charge at the outlet.
Depends on usage, but more batteries is a better time, and an external charger makes it easier.

One contact of the charger is spring loaded so any size will fit. Not just Nitecore either. Various brands utilize this design.

If you do go Nitecore don't get the D4. It is outdated. The new version is the UM20. It is better because instead of an AC cord it has a USB cord. Charge on a USB wall adapter. Charge in the car. Or my personal favorite, charge off of a power bank... anywhere! I have me a Tenergy 10Ah power bank that does both 2.1A and 1A output.

Keep in mind the charge rate is variable and depends on the input. Example if I charge 2 batteries off of the 2.1A outlet on my power bank they each charge at 1A. Plug the charger into 1A outlet and each is charging at 500mAh. Pop one out and the remaining one will increase to 1A.
