Discontinued The Grasshopper

Made an accessories order this AM - really can't wait to see what the increase is like when I get the PFE.

Need to get some more miles on the odometer before I can really say anything comprehensive but...

I will say if I had bought this vape when I first made my FC account (when I was between getting FW4, Milaana and GH) and it worked as good as the one I have now did, and stayed consistent... I would have never bought as many vapes as I have. For better or worse.

I'm looking at amazon and ebay for a nice case for my hopper, any recommendations? What other accessories are recommended?

Hopper feeders are available on ebay. Other than that and a good bubbler for at home the Hopper doesn’t really require much for accessories like many other vapes do.

This:

I've had one for three or four years. Two hoppers fit easily on the right side and on the left, a doob tube of herb fits while three batteries (with Delta 3D end caps, mind you) fit on the left under the strap.

Works brilliantly and I think its about $8.

Oh - I forgot to mention. I was ordering my accessories this morning and planned to buy a shirt as an additional way to give some support, but there were no more S/M left - obviously not a big deal at all, and understandably probably super low priority... but were there any intention of these being restocked? I think the design is pretty neat and would gladly wear it. :D

Anyway, let me move onto some actual questions:

I have mostly been using my 'hopper between 3-4 mostly. I have to use the condom as even doing 1hit bowls, the mouthpiece gets a bit too hot on my lips (obviously). I am hoping PFE will fix this as I don't wanna use silicone. Can anyone share their experiences using the PFE native on higher temps?

I was also curious how the taste from the GH is generally regarded... I did try some bowls at lower temps (2.6~) and got what I would consider to be good flavor and lots of bright terps. However, I was wondering if anyone who is more sensitive to the metallic taste from some vapes/heating elements found the Ti 'hopper to be better tasting? Or rather, more taste neutral?

and finally, how do people use concentrates in their 'hopper? Does anyone even do this? How do you like it?

thanks in advance!

Yeah, the PFE is an improvement natively, for temperature. Keep your lips away from the tip (so the tip is further in your mouth), as with the regular mouthpiece, helps. I find that it heats up slower, but also takes longer to cool, probably due to the increased mass. I prefer using the hopper with glass, though, as I tend to use it when I want a big hit (whereas for me the vapcap with small oven size is my daily driver).

and finally, how do people use concentrates in their 'hopper? Does anyone even do this? How do you like it?

You can put some on organic hemp fibre or cotton or whatever, like you would with a vapcap. However you want to make absolutely sure that nothing will leak into the heater, as that could damage it. I don't really use concentrates, but if I did and wanted to use them in the hopper I'd only do it when I was using it vertically, in my water piece. I tend to be overcautious with such things, though, you'd probably be fine using it natively too.

You asked earlier if warranties could still be transferred. To the best of my knowledge they can (for $40, I think); I've never seen that fail to work, and people mention doing it quite often on this thread.

You also asked about cleaning the chamber. I don't clean mine that often, but a quick swap with an qtip soaked in iso seems to work well, I can't imagine that would void the warranty (just make sure to let it dry before using again, obviously).

I agree with another suggestion - When doing this, keep the gh oven pointed towards the floor so no iso can drip into the heater.

I have used wd 40 electrical contact cleaner in the past to revive “dead” Hoppers. I have literally doused the entire unit in it from all angles so I know it got anywhere a liquid sprayed into it can get. I then blew it all dry with my air compressor and let it sit a while for any residuals to evaporate. Seeing I have done this successfully, I can’t imagine that careful use of a Q tip with ISO could possibly do any damage as long as it is dried thoroughly.

Yes - in the past, this has been true, but notice here in my new manual - it seems to directly say this is no longer the case. Just was curious, is all. Thank you for the help

Never is how I do it! hahaha

It was tough enough keeping that temp sensor working without coating it with 'trates reclaim.

To me, only, this is a pure flower machine.

As for PFE, I have Ti GH's but my PFE is the OG which was SS.

I think they make Ti ones now??/

But SS is the way to go to keep the MP cool as it has lower thermal dynamics than Ti.

Least that's how it seems to me.

As for warranty, limiting the lifetime warranty to the OG buyer makes a great deal of sense. Otherwise, the warranty liability could go on for centuries as you leave it to your heirs, right? LOL

Cheers

This is exactly how I clean my chamber with ISO.

I think the original Hopper instructions for care said to stand the unit in ISO up to the air holes, and I tried this once and said I’d never do it again, and just do a light ISO rub in the chamber facing down. Simple :):peace:

Exactly - I do believe them tightening up the warranty is a great idea. As long as it stays lifetime, that is still one hell of a deal in my books, considering some other vapes I own only come with a 1yr warranty. I am sure this will help the team at HL reduce their load, and also focus less on fixing old stuff and more time on building new stuff. Not just new 'hoppers, but new accessories and whatever else they have in the pipeline!

I was mostly curious, as I tried using a buddies SN/ID to register, and it gave me a different error message than I get when registering my own. The seller also told me they did not register it, so I was just doing some wondering. :D

Would love to get mine registered and make it official, just to give some peace of mind! :myday:

The 'hopper I have now is a SS, so I ordered an SS PFE (as well as leather case and condom) today - though I do plan to get a 'ti unit+PFE in the future for sure... interesting on the heat observation @Baron23 - glad to know the SS will hopefully do me well.

Also - sorry about the orientation on those pics lol :x

And good call - I will likely keep 'hopper flower only for simplicity's sake - I have devices much better suited for that occasion.

What is everyone's preferred way to load/unload their 'hopper? :haw:

I been rocking this one for like 3 years myself

woah! I thought wd40 was carcinogenic? And doesn't evaporate fully? no?

edit: oh, you must mean "wd40 brand" electrical contact cleaner not og wd40 lol

I said contact cleaner. Not regular wd-40.

edit: I also cleaned the bowl with ISO after the contact cleaner. But just for reference, I didn’t do the ISO clean as I forgot the last time. I couldn’t taste or smell anything odd. The WD40 Specialist contact cleaner is supposed to evaporate completely so it is safe for sensitive electronics.

It's got good flavour and a great terpene profile, especially at lower temps, but it doesn't last all too long. It's not the tastiest unit, but it does a good enough job for me. It's tastier than some and not as tasty as others.
But if there's one thing, you can just about tell when the bowl is done or how the unit is working just by the flavour.

I've never tried a Stainless Hopper, but do have an SS and Ti PFE. In general I would guess there is no real appreciable difference between the units - the assembly and design of the chambers and heaters are identical, and the rather short path thereafter isn't too impacted by the metallic nature. The PFE does introduce more mass and is slightly longer with a larger ID, so there is extra surface material in the vapour path. This helps to cool it slightly, but I still prefer to cool it further for big hits (usually I use a 14mm glass dome from old style oil rigs).
I would say the SS can introduce some flavour, but I don't really notice this over the vapour. The Ti PFE I have never tasted at all, even with the device off, so I would say this is the better option for that reason and a few more.

The SS heats up with usage and retains heat better than the Ti, the Ti PFE is much lighter and cools down faster, which lends itself to more favourable usage.
I dropped my SS PFE and it deformed slightly, the Ti is much more durable. You can also heat treat a plain Ti PFE with a butane torch, it's a fun and quality material. But you can't go wrong either way.
And just for simple one handed hits with that sake bottle, it'll be very worthwhile.

What is everyone's preferred way to load/unload their 'hopper?
I just load by hand straight from the BCG. I'm finding the medium plate or fine plate is my go-to.

I do have a GH Feeder, which is really great for stealth packing in public, but otherwise I don't really use it. I should recommission it soon though, it's been a while.

I've also got a knock-off NewVape scoop from eBay/china. It's okay, it does fit the GH chamber rather neatly. It's great to scrape it clean. I normally use this to handle CBD shatter, but find it doesn't pour herb all to well. I guess the proper NewVape tool has more smooth machining, but I would look at the Delta3D scoop over it - he has a nylon printed scoop that would be ideal for the GH + BCG too. However for the price I paid for the bootleg scoop, and the amount I use it, I can't complain.
I'm happy just loading it by hand, this is how I manage all my units. Where you can suck it up straw style (18mm baskets, dynavap, etc.) I don't like it as you can inhale small particles, but it is neat and convenient in a pinch. Using that method, or a scoop, or the GH Feeder, it is sometimes a good idea to avoid handling the porous herb as much as possible so it doesn't sap heaps of oils and juices only to be immediately sent express to the lungs and bloodstream, but I've never had a problem trying to keep my hands clean or vaporising residue, but it's handy to be able to avoid this if need be.

how do people use concentrates in their 'hopper?

I just sandwich it between herb and try to keep the mouthpiece pointing downwards. It works quite well, but I get what I need from dry herb in the hopper, and I guess prefer dabbing or double deckers in the sub. But definitely, when the stash gets low or the tolerance gets too high, the GH with concentrates is a good time.

 Yeah buddy! That's what I'm talkin' bout. Out of a damn pen. I've had to stop flying to curb my carbon emissions.

exactly. thanks for your insights friend (in this post, and all of your others in this thread)

I will save my pennies on a more wise purchase... like the HBC :haw:

It looks like I am already equipped for the task

No problem, cheers :)

Not able to load that image it seems, but I always recommend the Xtar MC2 for charging hopper cells.

Especially with the recent abundance of cation floating around, this particular charger has excellent overcharge protection and should reduce any risk to the greatest degree.

there's a reup of the pic at a different source :spliff::spliff::spliff:

ironically, I picked that exact charger up as a "cheapo, small footprint" charger, when I was purchasing my FW6 a few weeks back.

Really looking forward to the USB-C of HBC... that, in addition to the @maxvapor710 PA will be something of a dream
