Discontinued The Grasshopper

Any body tried traditional hashes with the GH yet? Since the heater is full convection, powerful and so close to the chamber it should deliver tasteful cloudy hits I suppose.

I got some hash on hand but I will not risk using it in the GH. The deep chamber combined with the bubbling nature of hash could cause some serious gunk issues. The hash will surely stick at the walls like glue and could possibly run through the screen into the heater, or just gunk ob the screen above the heater with no easy way to clean it. Maybe it will work when you place a buffer of cotton or steelpads in it but I wouldn't risk it.

To state this cleary:
1. This device is designed specifically for dry or loose leaf herbs as qouted by hopperlaps in their product info and manual.
2. As you can read in this thread, the chances are good you will run into warranty issues with the GH even when only using it as designed with dry herbs over time.
3. Don't expect to get damage caused by using other stuff than dry herbs handled by the warranty.

Sure, it could work. Others have stated how good the GH performs with concentrates and cotton but they are also risking their warranty by doing so. So hashes might work also BUT, compared to concentrates, you need far more hash for a comparable result and with the steeping amount of product you steep up in the risk of possible gunking up failures.

Seriously, I would not risk it. You got a Mighty and a Vapman, both proven to deliver good results with hashes.

Since I'm in Amsterdam in nearly two weeks I might stop @VapoShop and buy my unit right in the store to try it out with some "warme ortjes"

They don't seem to have a retail shop to stop by, vaposhop is online only as stated in their disclaimer on the page. I guess a vape only store would be far to niche to make profit from.

Got my new back end and yea...I wasn't crazy...back to playin weatherman blowin clouds with ease. :o And more importantly I love how you can literally feel the trickle of the sativa or indica slowly yet efficiently warm the brain. This thing is love in a dry herb vape:love:...I hope I'm not speaking to soon:\

P.s. My other end was working but very poorly (after a week of perfness) getting super hot to touch draining batts in a few hits and minimal cloudage with very light abv. I just did 2 full ovens with new back and the batt seems fine, abv dark like I'm used to and I am hoppin medicated...cherry pie.:whoa:

P.s.s hop on :whip:

Nice to hear that you are back on the road !

How long has lasted the whole warranty process finally ? Have you needed to send the malfunctioning back end to GHL ?

I think I have the same problem as you.. My back end is becoming very hot, nearly burning my finger after 4 or 5 hits :ugh:
Yesterday, it was nearly as hot as the oven :bang:
Batteries are lasting when fully charged 10-12 hits (10-15sec draw) for now... I don't know if it's normal battery discharge ? (could be)

Cheerz

Edit: tried to clean the threads and the "copper pole with ISO". Will see.. :)

I got mine this week and it is behaving just like yours, back end becoming very hot, starts to heat up even after just the first hit on 4.

I recently purchased a Vapman for this purpose and can get quite good results with this little piece of art, but sadly the taste is cooked of long before the higher temps for vaping hash are achieved...

I often wonder these days what people mean exactly by 'hash'. Back in the day, this was imported, fairly solid, material that came in forms like blocks cheese cloth wrapped kief (red, gold, or green) and black slab type hashes. In my experience smoking tons of this stuff in the past, it doesn't bubble at all...it smokes to an ash. It seems like there is a lot of newer references using this term for things like bubble hash, 'full melt' hash, and I hear the word hash used sometimes with what is clearly solvent extracted concentrates. I'm not the word police, just explaining that to me, its often not clear what someone is referring to by the word 'hash'.

If I had some black slab hash of my past, I would fluff some up over a flame, mix it with herb, and smoke it in my GH without worry. Concentrates of any sort, well...I know people are doing it but I'm with Horst...I wouldn't risk my GH oven that way but that's just me.

Cheers

My DOA grasshopper is on its way back to me after spending s few days at hopper labs. Has everyone else had to pay their own shipping to get their units worked on?

I'm happy to see its on the way back, but as it never even heated up I can't say I'm filled with confidence.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, I've only read about 1/3 of the posts here. Is the battery similar in height to an 18650? Do I need to dig out the spacers for my pila charger?

See, I'm the other way. I would never put slab hash in my Grasshopper, but that's only because I have no experience vaping it and don't know how it would behave.

I do have a lot of experience with vaporizing waxes, oils, shatters etc. in organic cotton. Based on that experience I had no worries at all using the GH with concentrates.

Most of my experience vaporizing concentrates is with my E-Nano in the glass stem. The benefit to this setup is the concentrate never goes in the vaporizer itself, and you can see exactly what is happening while you hit it. I have never seen concentrate "leak" out of cotton. It will come towards the surface of the side where you are inhaling from, so that part of the cotton could possible leave a little extra reclaim on the mouthpiece screen simply by being in contact with it.

I have used concentrates several times with the GH and have not had any issues at all. Yesterday I tried out the trademarked @slcbdco open-faced sandwich, with cannabis on the bottom of the chamber and a concentrate filled cotton ball on top. It was quite an enjoyable cannasseur experience, very unique flavors were developed.

Just make sure the concentrate is fully covered in cotton and you will be fine. Cotton is highly absorbent and can absorb 27 times its weight in water.

I've used up to .05 grams in one cotton ball with no issues. My next experiment will be two or three cotton balls in the chamber at once!

So far I like temp 4. At first I used 5 and at the end it scorched the cotton a tiny bit. No combustion, but it was harsh and tasted bad. At 4 the flavor is very nice, although I prefer my nano when it comes to flavor.

Whether using flowers or concentrates, I can taste a subtle metallic flavor with my stainless steel Grasshopper. It still produces great, convection based flavor from the herbs but there is just a hint of metallic taste to it. It's not a big deal or even surprising, but I am wondering if my titanium preorder will have the same flavor. Is it the body of the GH I am tasting, or the heater? Time will tell.

Sorry to ramble on, I'm a little hopped up right now if you know what I mean...

Next time I will take a couple pictures of the process to give a visual reference, that may be helpful for some.

Edit: I just realized you were only quoting part of my post. I too am interested if others taste this metallic flavor, and if it is limited to the stainless steel model.

The warranty process has been super easy and caroline has been super cool. I started process on the website explaining my issues and the next day she said a new back end was on the way. She also said to make sure the issue was fixed before sending the old one back which is pretty cool...im pleased with the process.

Now here's to hoping I'm hopping till the hoppers come home!

Very interested to hear more about this topic from anyone.

When I first tested my Ti Hopper after it had arrived, I felt like the vapor had some metal taste to it. Before I was using the Apollo most of the time which has a very clean taste.

I personally find the Hopper very hot and therefore almost exclusively use it with a small watertool now and do not have the metal taste anymore. Though I might just be used to the taste by now, since I use the Hopper most of the time. The fast heat-up time is just so convenient.

I might have to send it in at some point though, because my backend seems to get hotter since some time.

I oredered my Hopper from Vaposhop about 4 weeks ago, because I am located in Europe and was afraid of all the warranty hassle, if needed at some point. Cancelled my pre-order a long while ago, because of that reason. Very happy with the service of Vaposhop, they delivered very fast.

Edit: On a sidenote. If you order a Hopper from Vaposhop from within Europe with their FC discount, it is almost the same price as ordered from Hopperlabs directly with shipping costums and taxes. Plus you have it instantly and have much cheaper shipping costs in case you need to use the warranty.

Received my Grasshopper a few days ago and I really like it (coming from and Arizor Solo). It gets the job done for sure but I really only see equivalent vapor clouds (compared to the Solo) on level 5 and it never gets too hot/harsh. At lower levels I barely see any vapor. I'm charging the batteries and see if perhaps they were low (I never charged prior to using since they said they come fully charged). I'll test tonight on fully charged batteries and see if I can see a difference. That being said, I get fully medicated but really only on the highest setting (and it's more like a session with about 8-10 hits).

I also own a solo and enjoy it for what it's worth but a proper hopper def exceeds imo...this being said I have found some inconsistencies as far as cloud production especially with the batteries..it seems for me some are weaker than others I have 5..i really have no clue tho I swap one out and poof clouds. Also it seems that grind and herb cure/dryness seem to affect my outcome...medium grind and letting my fresh batches air out for a day seem to do the trick..other people seem to have no issues tho so could just be me...I am a vaping noob. but specifically when comparing cloudage to solo I feel the hopper should def be giving you more..and with ease in my experience. The first couple hits on a fresh proper hopper chamber are the same if not more cloudy than combusting!:ko: Gotta love the solo flavor and smoothness tho!;)

How hard are you inhaling? I found better performance with my hopper when I slowed down my draw speed. Previously I could hear air rushing into the intake holes. Now my vaporizer is silent when hitting it - nice slow draw speeds also seem to better cook the herbs

Switching subjects, has anyone had any issues with the internal screen on the mouthpiece? From day 2 with my vape (after reclaim started to build up), I find my internal screen is STUCK to the oven every time I unscrew the mouthpiece.

The only way to fix this is to screw it back together partially, then pull apart again and hope that the screen is threaded back into the mouthpiece enough. Then I get a long skinny finishing nail and screw the screen back in place but it never helps - it comes loose every time I unscrew the mouthpiece.

So far the best method I've found to keep the screen attached to the mouthpiece is by taking a quick puff to warm up the oven before unscrewing - this helps loosen the reclaim in the mouthpiece.

Mine has never come unscrewed and got stuck like that, but screwing and unscrewing the screen is definitely a pain. I'm still hoping they'll eventually come up with some sort of removal tool.

I'm actually drawing quite fast (you can definitely hear the air going through). I'll try a slow draw tonight. Thanks :)

I received my Grasshopper last Friday June 17, but was on vacation and it was waiting for me in my mailbox last night.

Visually it's striking to look at and feels like a premium device. I've had a Thermovape, Solo, Ascent, Crafty and currently been using an FM Mini while I waited (supposed to be for 2 months). The grasshopper is by far the nicest looking piece. It's lighter than I thought, the mouthpiece seems almost too light.

I tried it out and used about 1/4 of what I usually use in my FM mini. I have to say this thing is incredibly efficient. I was very medicated and the AVB was not really dark at all.

I was surprised though that I didn't get very good flavors of the flower, it was quite flat. I used Chemdawg from a dispensary. I've never had a convection vape and have read that it has better flavor than conduction vapes.

It's incredible how it heats up so quickly, this will really change things for me. I vape mostly at home and solo and have 2 teens. I need to be discreet and quick. This will really help. I really really hated waiting for the oven to get to temp on my past vapes.

The mouthpiece does get very hot. I set it on 3 and avoided the tapered end with my mouth. I am trying to see if i can use without the silicone extender. I shut off on the last 1/4 of my draw. The way it's designed it does seem to just shoot extremely hot air in almost a cyclone jet of air. I just tried to redirect the jet stream around my mouth and not straight to my throat.

I do have a little hydrotube that I will try with it.

That said, the design, quick heat up and efficiency far out weighs the negative of the hot air. I love this thing. I may try out one of the extenders to help cool the air, though I hate to ruin the sleekness of the Grasshopper. There's no way around the hot air with such a short vapor path. Hopefully once GH gets caught up they could design and extended tip that would not detract from the design of the Grasshopper.

Over all, 2 thumbs up.

Back end heat:

I've had the Hopper for 2 weeks and it is game changing. The cons mentioned by many are valid, but for me the cons are far outweighed by the speed, power, and efficiency of the GH. The GH provides quick vaporful pulls and requires 15 seconds from the time you remove the GH from your pocket til the time you return the GH back to your pocket. Simply amazing.

I have 4 batteries and they are marked for identification. For the first time, I noticed some back end heat when using my battery #3...the heat began after the battery was 50% drained until the heat continued until battery #3 was completely depleted. The back end was not sizzling hot, however, the back end was clearly producing heat of its own separate from the front end heat... noticeably so. I replaced the battery with freshly charged and the back end heat went away completely. I'm going to try to keep a closer eye on this before I jump to any conclusions. I haven't noticed any degradation in the performance of my GH.

Hm, still no reasonable justification for me to get a hopper then. Let's see if I can master VAS or if it wins again (which is obviously only a matter of time). Perhaps I'll just get something else, easier to clean and maintain... Lotus?
If I should ever get a GH anyways I'll try some traditional hash in there and report back how it went. I'm really not afraid about loosing the warranty or damaging the hopper, just curious if the vapor production with traditional hash could justify the new acquisition. I'm sure there is more than one work-around to protect the heater / heating chamber from gunking up. I have a few S&B liquid pads left and enough AVB to mix with. This is how I used to vape hash in the Pax 2, it's easier to clean than the mighty and still conserves taste better (or longer) than the VM.
While they all- mighty, VM and Pax 2- can deliver quite good vapor, there is still much room for improvement when it comes to vaping traditional hash, at least maintenance wise for the mighty and taste wise for the VM. I don't want to believe it's the end of the road! And somehow I thought the 45w heater could transform the sticky hashish to crumbly dust which would be easier to get out of the chamber.

They don't seem to have a retail shop to stop by, vaposhop is online only as stated in their disclaimer on the page. I guess a vape only store would be far to niche to make profit from.

At least the German reseller "verdampftnochmal" has a retail shop in Berlin. You can even try out some of their vapes in the shop for a test run with legal herbs!
It would have been a nice occasion to combine the visit in Amsterdam with the GH purchase. But in the case of vaposhop only doing online business, sadly the easiest way to get a GH might be the online purchase, like so often.

This is why I wrote "traditional hash", to make clear I'm not talking about solvent-or carbon-based extracts, the only "solvent" might be water (hopefully).

The hash I've got is still made with the same "traditional", mechanical extraction techniques like dry sift, hand rubbing or (ice-)water like dynasties before, but it's far far away from the "old school brick hash" containing much plant material and trichome stalks we apparently both used to vape (or combust) long time ago. But time changed:
"If it doesn't bubble, it's not worth the trouble!". So even those mechanical (or solventless extracts) are mostly solid, there is a good chance to gunk up the screens or the heater underneath if overfilled or if used without a layer of herbs/ SS mesh. This is exactly why I don't like hash in the mighty. Extensive cleaning needed since everything gunks up with nepalese or water hash.
Traditional hash can be very close to solvent-based extracts in terms of purity or potency. Even if I can obtain very good chemical concentrates, I'm still more into "bubble hash" or the traditional hash for different reasons, no matter how it was extracted.

Perhaps someone with a hopper and some hash(-ish) is brave enough to try it out. Just for science!

@Ratchett Sounds like something is wrong with your mouthpiece, as I've never had this issues and it sounds like it's happening too often. I usually clean the mouthpiece once a month too. I think it's time to submit a warranty claim.

@Michel Well if you get one try it and don't like it, you could always sell it back to someone who wants to try it as well and not lose too much money on it.

This is a great idea @jabba marking the batts...I truly believe as stated before not all hopper batts are created equally..
