Discontinued Lil' Bud by Vapwood

Ok I am super happy with The LiL Bud!!! It definitely rocks!!!! My only issue is not with LB but with the stock roasting tube. It's just too open and airy for me. Maybe it's me but the airflow is as free as the Flower pot showerhead. What I did was use the short all glass tube that came with the Splinter. For me it was like night and day, went from light wispy vapor to thick milky clouds instantly with the same draw speed. When observing the stock LB tube next to the all glass tube, I noticed the inner diameter of the glass was thicker making the inside of the glass narrower although the outer diameters were the same. So I grabbed the Milaana wood tubes that I believe my dad got from Alan and they were the same as the glass with the thicker inner diameter. I then switched the glass with one of @Alan Milaana tubes and got the same great effects as I did with the glass. Comparing Alan's wood Mi tubes to the glass tubes you will notice that they both have a more narrow inner diameter than the stock LB tube. Ahhh, so that's what I like then. More resistance. So my personal conclusion and preference with LiL Bud is to have a tube with a narrow inside. Hopefully Pops remembered to order a couple from @Alan for me. Alan if he did and you haven't gotten around to it yet, please make my inner diameter narrow. And maybe one with glass liner. Unfortunately he won't tell me what his handle is on this forum so I don't know how you would even know who I'm talking about but he has the Hipod and said he's making an order with you soon.
@Cheesequake it definitely sounds like a battery issue. I've been using ecigs and dealing with 18650's for years and there is definitely a ton of fakes out there. Even reputable websites get caught sometimes it's just the nature of the beast. I just used 3 year old 18650's that have been through hell and a million recharges and they perform better than what you described. These things have been dropped, rewrapped 3X, dents (not safe, just testing for cheesquake), and I sometimes leave them on the charger for up to 2 days before removing and only produce maybe 2 less bowls than my newer batts. I really love this LB. This is what I prefer as far as the instant heat up time and loving it with the Splinter glass and wood Mi stems. Tomorrow I will use it with the long glass Mi stem. It has that same thicker inside so the extra length will probably be even better.

@RushVaporTrails , after your 2nd stem or when your battery gets to 3.90ish try preheating for 2 seconds (longer then first 2 stems) ) before hitting it . your draw as you usually do. It's what I do when my battery is getting close to its last stem . The simple preheat for a few secs takes much "technique" away in regards to unregulated battery life .. keep having fun bro, sound like you are and getting baked , try not to overthink if it's your technique , batteries or vape , It might come to you without trying or being worried everything is done as it should be .

So as mentioned I decided to do a reboot and start fresh and perhaps its a combination of more experience with my draws and a little new knowledge but things have improved all the way around as I pay more attention to the task at hand.

Previously, I had combusted fairly often, which made me button shy as far as long pushes of the button.

So i thought the batteries were lame because after a stem or two I would no longer be getting vapor with the same techniques from the first stem.

But after discussing here, I hadn't really before made the connection (i must be very dense with this stuff) that a weaker battery means you can take way longer draws and keep the button depressed way longer than on a fresh battery. And whatdya know, I got nice vapor by just keeping the button depressed a little longer and I actually think you have a little more control over it because its more forgiving. Whereas on the fresh battery, you can easily combust with an extra second or two of heat plowing thru.

Now, i don't know how many stems or hits were involved, but i took the battery way further than I had before and when I put it on the charger it read 3.64, which from what everyone is saying is a very respectable number. So perhaps my batteries aren't necessarily defective or fakes, but I am still going to buy a few new ones from IMR just to compare.

As far as screens, i did what all you suggested, gave it a good scrape out while hot, left it in there and repacked and it was totally fine. I even noticed an improvement in a more even AVB, previously I had hot spots in the middle of the material and practically uncooked herb around the edges.

And yes @P.A.M. , baked would be the appropriate word. Kinda hard to care about batteries and screens and all that when your taking in those face melters.

There are many things to like about the Lil' Bud, but one of the true standout things is the effects of these hits, different than any other device I have. Really loving the whole on demand part of it, pick it up and getting vapor so quick, can't believe there was a time in my life if i wanted vapor i had to sit and wait five minutes for the volcano to heat up. Now if i want to use the volcano, guess what i can pick up and use first while i am waiting, of course, by the time the volcano heats up, i am now good to go, put the LB down, turn back off the volcano, shrug my shoulders and get on with life.

@HerbieVonVapster I use Boveda packs to bring the moisture level to the proper level. I believe it's Boveda 62. I haven't bought them in awhile, but I live in a humid area (Long Island) and my weed would probably get wetter in the summer months. I also use Cvaults, but mason jars work really well. The longer in the Boveda storage the better. This isn't the best moisture level for vaping, rather for storing, so you still have to dry out with the light bulb trick.

A little preheat can go a long way. I love the 2.0's ability to tolerate long switch depression. The coil will reach a max temp, pretty much stay there until you pull it into the load. With the new switch / foil lining / everything stays pretty cool. What really regulates LB is your draw. After a long preheat, be prepared for the volume of heat you're pulling through. The vapor volume will abruptly increase at some point in the draw, as the herb is about to release all that incredible vapor. The way I control this is mad rush of vapor is to stop drawing, as I lift my finger off the trigger. Timing, taking it as far as you can before combustion, is the key to monster rips vs sips. The nice thing about all the 2.0 changes, it makes this process a little more fool proof.

@KingSol I have some 12mm glass inserts from @Alan, and this just pin points the differences in user preference. I like the wide open draw. It's in the draw style that makes the difference. That's where different tubes can make all the difference. Glad you had the patience to wait for the full blown 2.0 experience.

@RushVaporTrails Glad to hear you have found your balance. LB can take long button depressions, but the combustion only comes from drawing to hard or long. Once you realize how much control breath gives you, you're back in the driver seat. Batteries matter, yes, but the new LB seems to be able to run off weaker batteries. And prepping the herb, makes your battery work that much less.

@P.A.M. Alan has lots of ideas in his mind. He is basically an inventor, as well as a master craftsmen. I'm a tweaker. I can take an idea and use my skills to improve upon it, almost endlessly. I like to wrap my head around a problem / challenge, and just crush it. It's the firefighter in me, better, better, better. Alan has a thousand new ideas, while I'm content with make the few ideas I can wrap my head around, even better. With that said, yes, he's got something in mind, but that is for him to tell.

Nah it's def not a battery issue. I've used these batteries with the MVT and Milaana and I can char the fuck out of a load in seconds if I want to with them. They're all less than 6 months old with light use and purchased from IMR batteries.

Just finished making a big push with @Alan 's project as far as a design plan / process. Now I can assemble my 2 stray units today / tomorrow, and finally unbox my DNC parts, and order what I need to move forward. This will be a nice relaxed week, no real hard core dead lines. Hope all goes as well as it did this morning. Woodwoking skills / tools really pay off, makes me hopeful I'll be able to achieve some nice results with Timber and the Elite, as far as customizing the wood body. Feels like I'm building mini-furniture, my wheel house, versus electronics and assembly, my more newly acquired skill.

@Cheesequake I'm thinking a button issue... @Bravesst why is it you can't replace the button? Especially now with the newer more reliable ones..

Glad the LBE will eliminate this issue and hopefully my LB 1.0 keeps on trucking... Still getting 6-8 stems with about 4 hits per stem and not stirring just rotating the stem.. I do have to cover 2 air intakes and wonder why there's three to begin with. One airhole under the coil to have a airpath to follow.. can we request one airhole on the LBE?

@elykpeace Different people, different priorities. I'm down to two holes spaced 189 degrees apart for an even flow of air across the coil as you inhale. I'd love to put a vent hole on the very bottom, air would have to pass through the switch compartment, and therefore not an option. Right now, you are basically looking at the air path of all wood and stainless steel. Literally nothing else involved. With one hole, there is a noticeable, permanent, draw restriction. Wouldn't suit everybody. I should sell mini vent hole plugs, or you can always cover with a finger.

I can easily change a button on any new unit, but the larger switch makes a retrofit virtually impossible on older units. I believe I've made an offer on replacing this unit for him.

Hmm. Maybe there's something wrong with mine after all. Mine is like a Milaana on Xanax.

Totally different than my lil bud experience. Mine runs much hotter than you describe. Runs hotter than the Milaana. No cigar style puffs or preheat needed with the LB.
I feel the heat almost instantly when I depressed button and begin drawing. Liking this feature a lot. Gives you the benefits of using as a quick sneak a toke vape.

Funny story.. guess due to LB shape when down in Baltimore's inner harbor this week. I kept getting asked for a smoke. Realized the panhandlers though it was pack cigarette not a lil bud in my pocket.

I do wonder now if it would slide into a cigarette pack? A pack of smokes draws little attention could add to the stealth factor.

The lift your finger off the trigger is key. Earlier I said I would combust if I preheated 5 seconds. I can still if I preheat draw and not lift finger. It's a different style than milaana. Now I preheat few seconds on a fresh load release trigger for a tasty flavor first hit. Followed by nice thick clouds with lessen flavor thru rest of tube.

It really does comes down to feathering controlling the trigger and your breath rate. I let the vapor roll across my tongue. I use my tongue as a temperature probe. Once you get use to doing just becomes second nature. First couple use my brain trigged same response I use for milaana.

Once my brain adjusted to the difference's and I changed my style its been smooth sailing.

Item has arrived in Canada and was sent for further... yeah baby , yeah !
That makes me very happy...

Lots to report.
Gonna be right up front here. After some careful deliberation, and taking a close look at what it takes to build an LB 2.0, I realize I need to be compensated at a higher rate in order to justify the time I put in. For now, there is a $10 across the board price increase, and I'll do the best I can to hold prices down until after the holidays. I am going to offer a $10 coupon code on all Lil' Bud Classics for the rest of this month to FC members.

There is a lot that goes into this, and I don't even count the research, ordering supplies, website editing, dealing with customers, packing up and shipping, wasted supplies, R&D, trip to Denver, into the calculation, that's just on me. I only consider shop time as actual work. The thing is, my employment is flexible, and I want to cut down on hours so I can spend more time in the shop.

COUPON CODE: OLDPRICE for the month of August

The new switch, from my new supplier, is far superior to any switch I've ever come across. I'm now convinced that the turned steel exterior is a true indicator of what's going on inside. The contacts are silver plated gold, and the switch never goes above warm. This is telling me that all heat in the switch on defective units, is from the switch itself, not referred from the coil. I have been pounding this new unit, and I cannot get this switch above warm. I cannot express the relief I feel at now knowing that a legitimate, proper switch exists. I may even look into other switches from this seller.

The edging idea is taking shape. My idea is to take this beyond a beaded edge. I fashioned my first reeding blade, basically cuts 3 parallel beads, going beyond just the edge, scratching out a pattern on the wide side of LB. Gonna tweak the tool, and I'm sure I can create some really cool stuff. In its crude state, it already works.

I ran outta coils. That's never a bad thing for upcoming assemblies, because the slight tweak each batch of coils gets always improves things just a bit. That will be the order of the day - coil prepping for a small batch of coils, and hopefully coil forming. God knows, I need to speed up this process.

I was packing up my travel bag today it was a nice surprise to find the lil bud fits in the vacant
pocket left by elevape. Since it's now serves it's purpose it's just a nice coincidence it fits it's spot.

Good news for the stray 3 left from batch 7. Units are assembled with new switches / foil. They just need final finishing before being packed up. Unfortunately, I work all day tomorrow, but looking at Wednesday. I know you know who you are...

MORE ON SPEEDING UP THE PROCESS
I am going to look at every aspect of building LB for ways to get more efficient. There are some aspects of the build process that can take an inordinate amount of time, and I'm sure there are ways to improve, do things differently, not even talking about end results, just better, labor saving ways to get there.

So the moment has finally arrived, kinda caught up on *The Alan Project*, waiting on further orders. All batch 7 is assembled and 90 percent shipped. Batch 8 is only 10. Ahh... I can breathe, and ready to really look at the DNC 75C, and how best I can accommodate the electronics.

I worked really hard the last few weeks (and few months before that), but I get bored easily, so that's probably not gonna change much. That's a good thing for anybody who wants to see more LB's being built.

Beading, Reeding, Fluting. I found a high end plane that does just that, you can even make your own custom blades for it. I decided to give it a go myself. I read an article somewhere about how to do this with a hack saw blade and a block of wood. Here's the first draft, a little tough to operate, either I didn't get a decent edge on the *blade*, or I need to find the right angle to scratch at. Can you imagine this in the same pattern down one or possibly both sides? I could cut this pattern into the stock before just about anything else. You need six inches or so of waste on each end, as it's hard to run the pattern all the way from end to end.

Switch Insurance
I've been building away with the new switch, used up about 12 or so. My supplier is supposed to get new stock early September. He does have the old style flush / raised button switch, I ordered a couple, and sure enough, turned steel, not stamped. It's got a great feel, and if he doesn't stock up at the very beginning of the month, I may have to jump on these. Right now, he's got 500 on hand, so I don't feel the need to buy today, but it's tempting. Problem is, I already have 200 switches I can't use, don't wanna be stuck with more. I just hate cutting it close on anything that'll shut down LB ops. This is my version of VAS (VPAS, or vape parts acquisition syndrome). It's what I do, search for parts. I do need to stick to only parts I can use.

Special Requests
I have forgotten about my gift of some nice Koa wood that I plan to break into soon. I also want to open up LB to many different species, but for now if you have a special request, you can PM me, and I can I'll see what I can find. Or maybe you have some really cool wood you'd like me to use.

My patient 3...
they still need a lil' TLC in the form of finish sanding / hot beeswax

@Bravesst those look stunning. I know at least one person is over the moon.
Should be interesting to hear what you both think of the 2.0LB

Well here is my QM and FW 2.0 7b batch unit I have had now for almost 2 weeks, figured its time to show it off. Had to find a good background to go with it, can you guess what it is?

13yfrr8.jpg

qq4o05.jpg

The unit has movement all over itself, when its in your hand you cant help but to constantly twist and turn it. I really like the combo of the 2 woods together, and @Alan FW stem just finishes it off nicely.

Kinda of Blah, I think not Mike

The newly added ss foil and tighter coil make a very noticeable improvement, from my batch 5 LB. Mike said this LB was hitting awesome and he wasn't kidding :smug:

Almost instantly when pressing the switch you can feel the heat. With a fresh battery 5 to 6 count leaves me with a nice tasty cloud. The less battery life the longer the switch hold but still can get great vapor.
I also don't have to dry out my herb like I did with my batch 5 LB to get the same great vapor. I use a Cvault with 62% Boreno packs, and normal grind. Im sure drying would help battery life but I feel its not needed anymore.
If I feel the hit wasn't good enough after I release the button I can press it again and still be able to add more to the hit. It is like downshifting a manual trans a gear and mashing the gas pedal to the floor to pass some slowpoke.:D

@Bravesst ever think about adding the longer 3.5 inch stem as a choice at time of purchase? It really does help cool the beast down some, just a thought?

I never really got to test the 2.0LB out fully before, unfortunately my wifes 2.0 LB PH and QM had a dreaded bad switch on hers. It didn't stick on, it just started to get hot too the touch and only way to get the coil to somewhat get hot was press super hard in on the one side of the button. Mike was on it the next day after I sent him the bad news, looking for a new better switch. Well I think he has found it and hopefully no more worries.

The 2.0 LB I have here has the same style button as my wife's but was from another supplier and has yet giving any trouble, KNOCK ON WOOD OR SIDE OF LB! Trust me these last few days I have pushed it to test it out.

I have a infrared temperature gun and have done some testing on how warm the button gets. After 2 stems and taking about 5 draws from each, pretty much one right after another, between 5 to 10 second press times, it jumped from 77* to about 92*. I have done this multiple times and still only warm to the touch. :clap:I noticed the switch hasn't got above that temp either, even with more push.
A lower battery does make the switch heat to the 92* faster, probably because its working harder?
This leads me to believe the stronger the battery the less stress on the switch. I will be following what @beyond6strings does and use a fresh battery for 2 to 3 stems.

I tested my wifes button on her unit and it reached 101* after 1 half ass stem. So there is quit a bit of temperature difference between and good and bad switch.

Mike all the new units your pumping out look awesome, your in your LB zone!

Im real excited for batch 8, to be apart of batch 9, and cant wait until I hear the echoing of TIMBER throughout FC community!

@HerbieVonVapster , so that's actually dark cherry eh? It Does look walnut one side but i do see the cherry on the lighter side, very cool ! Looking forward to hear how your trek went , nice set up in your bag pocket! You'll love having the LB with you . It's So easy on the go! Considering the collection of fine vapes you have in the background (going to vape war ? Nice!!) goes to show no job is too big for the Lil' Bud !

@KingSol did you show us your LB , or was yours "the kit" with tinypic ? congratulations man! Fun hearing about your stories with your dad and him not telling you his FC handle. We should start you a "searching for.." thread to help you find him

Really like the QM ones my next purchase will be a Quilted LB Elite or Quilted timber elite. Figure I'm in for a wait for that. But every time see one of quilted LB I want one.

Yes I was kinda surpriced how dark it was thought mighta got walnut by mistake. It is really neat how looks like different wood depending on what side you looking at. The look of my Lil Bud really has grown on me. I been enjoying it's performance she's nice and hot.

:peace:

I have the infrared temperature gun also, and was going to do the same test on the switch. But even without the gun, I find the switch is pleasantly cool to the touch. I accidentally pushed a battery down to about 330, still not hot. Now that is incredible. The only concern with the switch is making sure I've got enough of them. That's why I've scoped out the back up choice (same seller / manufacturer) that is actually in stock right now. Batch 8 will be started pretty soon. Time to break out the Purple Heart, Quilted Maple, Koa, Figured Walnut, and of course my old stand by, Cherry.

I was thinking, and not sure who would support this idea, but we now know that LB doesn't really heat up past actual body temperature, except for the actual coil. So we are working with a nice cool wood body. We know there are no adhesives used on LB (except for a drop of glue to hold the magnets), but if I decided to use multiple species of wood on the same unit, it would be really easy to join several pieces of wood using traditional joinery techniques, clamps and some yellow carpenter glue, to form LB classic blanks. With the foil lining and new switch, I think we can keep the wood body cool enough to not be a problem. Of course this would be a custom option.

The grain runs vertically, and needs to be joined on the edge or face grain (vertical). I want the vapor path to be one solid piece, so above the switch box will be all one piece. Of course we could do whatever we want with the switch box and back plates. So we have the potential for 4 woods in one unit with just one glued joint away from the coil side of the unit. My idea is FW main body battery side, Cherry switch box, Maple above switch box, PH back plate - with one glued (yellow carpenters glue) joint away from the airpath. The joint is stronger than the wood itself. You can mix and match your own unit.

Trying to think of a name for my latest brain child without just resorting to Rainbow something or other. If you're interested in the 4x4 Bud / Quad Bud / or whatever better name I can think of, it will be available by special order. I'm going to throw one into batch 8 just to see how it winds up. Base price on Quad Bud will be a flat $200 right now while it's not built yet (plus mouthpiece / shipping / battery). I'm sure that price will change. It's not on the website yet, so you'll have to contact me here or via email (vapwood420@gmail.com).

And I agree that LB got easier to use. Herb prep, technique have gotten less important with this switch, foil lining, tighter, more symmetrical coil. It seems to pulverize anything in the stem without combusting it. I'm not sure what's contributing the most to the new phenomenon, but it is one or all of the 2.0 changes. This is good news for Vapwood going forward, as the same switch, coil, foil lined oven will be used on the Elite and Timber.

I believe I can say at this time, the design is nailed down tight.

I have to say that reading this thread is pretty inspiring. I love watching ideas turn into reality, and in the 21st Century seeing the follow through is damn cool. Lots of folks have ideas, very few follow through to see those ideas come to fruition.

And on top of that, to see how hard Mike works to continue to improve each LB. Not just by Batch, but within Batches. And we're all better off for it.

Can't wait to rip into the LB. I gotta bunch of new flower for the family vacay and I can't wait to taste it in the LB 2.0

My patient 3...
they still need a lil' TLC in the form of finish sanding / hot beeswax
I think that might be "MY" Cherry/Cherry LB. The one in the middle pic.It has a lot of character for cherry for sure! I coulda had the QM/PH though!
