So the nut for my dnail base finally came in on Friday :)

Been playing around with it for about a day now, and liking the quick heat-up time and up-temp dabs, and overall I’m finding the experience to that with my vrod very similar but the approaches are different. The dnail I am up-temping and the vrod i have to heat soak and then I turn off the heat when taking a dab.

The d-nail slim base I uptemp from 350-400 to 565 and can start from cold no preheat required ... the vrod I have to heat soak to 590 and then turn off the heat before applying my dab. Both result in very flavourful hits with little/no waste.

I also received a little extra ... a sapphire insert :) ... not sure how to use this exactly ... what temp, carb cap or not ... cleaning ... etc etc

If it's the v1 insert I was using this chart to try and figure out what temp I needed my sic dish at to try it at first:

If it's the v2 then I have no idea, sorry. I'd love to know how you like it though.

It's the v1 insert ... and do you heat it up in place or place it on with the dish pre-heated and material already loaded?

Thanks!
I do both. I put some on the insert then put tweezers in the middle and drop it on. I wait until I see a little vapor then cap it. After vaping that and it's up to temp I just drop straight on the insert.

I posted this a short clip of me putting it on before:

I forget which fc'er suggested tweezers in the middle hole to me, but it's the easiest way I've tried. I was doing all sorts of dumb\hard stuff before that.

I was shopping high (don't) and decided to get a new bubbler. Too stoned to check frivolous things like joint size and height I ended up with a pretty small piece. For now I switched out my D020 for this and I'm enjoying it. I don't really taste a difference, though with my 10 or so bubblers I've tried I don't think I ever have. The draw is a little easier and I like the handle on the front so I'm going to give it a shot for awhile and see how I like it. I was using it without the drop down, but with 14mm it sticks out more and it popping out seemed much easier.

I ended up not liking the glass, it got clogged on the bottom really fast:

I need to stop buying glass, I never end up keeping any over my D020 and D020-D.

Is there a good place to buy the d-nail sic halo in either the UK or Europe? Seems like these are really hard to find in stock anywhere!

Just grab a High Five 28mm SiC halo and base from @PlanetVape They will take care of you and super reasonable international shipping. The halos are identical, the bases are both 18/14 combos, but the high five looks more stable than the d-nail slim series, just more thermal mass. Who knows if D-nail even exists as a company anymore, i've heard rumours of folding and buyout. I'm still waiting for my 14mm male base, and not really expecting to get it at this point anymore.

AFAIK Vapefiend UK is the only retailer who is selling D-Nail products in Europe

I hope those prices are negotiable. Robbery like that should be a crime.

Thanks for the suggestion @biohacker that looks a very decent price compared to d-nail setup.

I also could get the set for my 16mm coil, apparently the d-nail coil has a different pin arrangement to my e-nail which is a big pain and means if I went with d-nail I would have to source a 20mm coil with the correct pin arrangement.

I'll wait to see if the 16mm version comes back in stock soon!

Can you recommend a carb cap for the high 5 version too?

That's pretty much the only thing I still like D-nail for...their Generation 2 Universal Carb Cap... it's apparently better than the High Five 28mm cap, but I haven't compared the two. I'm sure i'll pick up their cap and base at some point when i'm bored.

Oh, and the D-nail v2 cap is actually IN STOCK! :brow: Better hurry! ;)

Why don't you go with the NewVape VRod with (D-Nail) SiC dish?
Nearly the same price but with the option to also use it as a high-end flower vape?

This does look like an interesting option thanks for the heads up.

It's certainly complicated figuring out exactly what I would need, how does this connect to say a 14mm bong or drop down as it looks like there is no attachment, is there an accessory I need to buy to make it work?

Look at their part list + University first

https://www.newvape.com/flowerpot-twax-vape/fp-faq

Make a part list what you think to need and we can speak about.

Regarding the bowls, the glass bowls are the cheapest and most flavorful. Otherwise, take a look at the Panhead and Shovelhead. It's your choice what you like more. Their performance is the same.
If you want to take one of these last two you also should take a double woven ti screen, But they only fit the PH and SH.

You need a special coil for the VRod. Take a look at the VRod coil at @710Coils. High quality "D-Nail style" wired coils also in 220v if needed for a reasonable price.

I heard the same rumours … about a potential buyout … but I did email them a week or two ago about our 2 14mm slim bases and they got back to me in about a day (very reasonable) saying they had a batch of parts come in out of spec that they had to send back … but I'm 1st on their list when they get them in stock :)

We'll see @biohacker … I also talked to Ed @ NewVape about making a 14mm base (not a combo one), and he seemed very receptive to the idea. NV also has a 14/18 combo base for a very reasonable price that looks like a great option; for carb cap I think the D-Nail one is still king here though … I'm hopeful NV comes out with something. I do find the flat coil directly on the dish to be very much superior to the VROD with the wrap-around coil … much better heat transfer and just overall works much better and can go lower temperature with much less/no pooling.

The only thing here I'd like to mention, and this is the first I say about it, as I really wanted to be sure before I say anything, but I think the D-Nail dish works SIGNIFICANTLY better than the NewVape 28mm SiC dish ... I haven't said anything because I kept changing things around trying to see if I was missing something, as that seemed to be what was making the most difference, but it didn't seem like a likely culprit; I kept thinking it must have to do with my install of the dish on the base (D-Nail Halo or V-ROD), but the D-Nail dish has consistently, every single time, performed much better than the NV dish all other things being equal.

I do very much like the V-ROD and the D-Nail base, although I'm mostly rosin these days so am using the D-Nail more, that being said, I can do some killer twax bowls using my e-Nail Magic device to step my temps accordingly for me :) … ie. both are great devices …

If I had either base with the NV dish vs the D-Nail dish, I'd have to increase my temps by a good 50 deg and still get inferior performance … very strange … I mean it's got an extra 0.5mm diameter, so that hardly seems like it could cause it … must be more to it … total volume of the dish does seem quite a bit bigger, and there might be differences with the angles of the sides to the bottom of the dish etc., but at any rate, I'm extremely surprised to find that the dish is the biggest difference in my opinion; and I thought the result of getting the NV dish would be that I would be recommending everyone by that one for the price difference, but I in fact have come to the opposite conclusion. I would gladly choose the D-Nail dish for $100 over the NV dish thrown in for free; that being said, the NV dish is excellent .. … it's just that when going to it coming off the D-Nail one when doing direct comparisons, the difference between the 2 is extremely apparent …

Still testing … but this is a couple (few?) weeks worth of comparison …

Thanks @JCat ... dude, you just blew my mind!!! I figured if it looked like SiC and acted like SiC, well it should all just be SiC! But apparently (n=1 anyways) SiC isn't just SiC! Appreciate your feedback as always man.

Is the dnail more restrictive since it seals inside

That's something i've been contemplating lately....sometimes regardless of water tool, I feel different airflow restrictions, and am unsure exactly where the build up is happening, and why exactly. Nothing beats that freshly cleaned water tool and dish/base carb cap feeling!!

Has anyone had their sic halo break?

I'd be incredibly unhappy if mine broke and they were out of stock for months or gone. I'm thinking about buying a backup sic halo, not worried about my base.

I have. I broke mine on a concrete floor while it was hot tho. It cracked into 2 pieces. I bought a replacement the same day even though I had the TAG sic dish. Later when they had a good sale I got another one for $60 as a back up. It was good thinking when I was thinking the halo sic may be my end all be all.

Now it seems a little excessive. I have 3 sic dishes I do not use now that I recently moved on to @710Coils 30mm opaque quartz banger.

That's a little encouraging, they definitely sound hard to break. Though I still don't like hearing they can, I might still buy a backup. I'm actually trying out an opaque banger right now, I'd like to stop using metal but I haven't liked anything more than the sic halo yet. I'm finally all glass with flower, I'd love to do the same with concentrates.

I feel the same way about the tag halo, just doesn't work as well as d-nails. It was more than just the different size too. What @JCat said about the newvap one is making me wonder about the d-nail "wik" surface thing I always kind of dismissed.
