Crafty/Crafty+ by Storz & Bickel

Good morning all,

I'm still 100 pages or so behind on this thread, Crafty had been working great and after I got past the 32hr mark my first one died at, I felt more at ease.

Last night my fully charged unit wouldn't turn on. The power button feels different, almost mushy, and there's a rattle if I gently shake the unit (with or w/out the cu). This one passed away at 62hrs :rip:

Is the power button something that had been an issue before?

I'll be sending it back in today and requesting an upgrade to a Mighty. I really like the form factor of the Crafty, but even at these hours, Oct to mid-Feb just doesn't cut it.

Something tells me S&B, even with their desktop experience, didn't have a full grasp on the portable challenges. But it's my favorite when working!

I did the math and it turns out I used this unit an average of 33 minutes/day. Sounds about right, 2-3 sessions a day with more on the weekends.

MT

Its weird i dont here as many complaints overall as other portables...like the haze 3 and pax2 . Even the firefly have many complaints and thats also a top tier vaporizer. I just dont know about reshipping every 3 months ill mess around n just use my desktop lol. Where is the crafty 2 lmao

I've heard from a lot of people that the crafty medicates better than the other portables. I can't say either way as I've only ever tried the crafty. The warranty here in the US is good, you wont have to worry about wasting your money. I originally bought 2 in Nov 2014, and one of them was replaced twice, the other was replaced once. They always sent me brand new replacement and of course all of the extra parts. Besides being out of my crafty for about a week, I think I've made out pretty good on the deal. I only hope these newer units are going to last. The original run had a lot of fragile points causing breaks and such that they have since fixed.

The unit does need some care though, it's made out of plastic so it can break if its dropped. I also think excessive heat is another problem. Electronics in general hate heat. So you have to be mindful.

Their price to replace the battery is absurd, they should make these units with user replaceable batteries.

One thing you'll never hear me say is that I wish I hadn't bought the crafty.

It's called the Grasshopper, not free though and requires patience

And DEFINITELY not made by S&B!

S&B customer service make Hopper Labs look like an amateur kids show.... just IME ofcourse!

If you are willing to put up with 3x more failures than what your crafty would ever go through.

3X? You're an optimist! My first GH arrived DOA, and the warranty replacement sure wasn't a brand new one like S&B would send, which I ended up selling immediately.

Now if S&B were to buy out HL's..... that could be an interesting mashup!

Although I presently don't own a Crafty, I still think it's the best portable out there. I mean, even GH owners are ripping off S&B CU idea and using Crafty CU's on their GH's to deal with the harsh heat due to super short vapour path.

My package from SB Germany said "Crafty Vaporizer" on the package, uh that is very annoying..

I was wondering about this... and thought I read something to this effect.

What is the packaging like for replacements from S&B USA/Canada? (I'm in Canada...)

I'm on a rural property with a few houses on it that share the same address & mailbox. Is the packaging discreet for replacement units from S&B to Canada?

I'm an occasional (2-3 times per week) crafty user so here's hoping I never have to find out...

Thanks

My replacement In US came via USPS.
Pretty standard box, did not say anything other than "S&B" and addressing. Signature was required.

Man, it sucks hearing about so many people having problems. My crafty is a champ. I've had it for 11 months now, and have never had any issues. It probably has been used on average about 3-4 full loads per week. It's been my go-to portable vape for the last year. I'll have to check when I get home how many hours it's been in service. I have no idea. (I'm assuming that is stored in the unit, and the app will pull it when I connect it) I don't use the app much at all.

The shipping box is a generic USPS box with Storz and Bickel as the return address. Unfortunately the customs form says vaporizer on it.

I live in Vancouver where pot is effectively legal so the mail man just chuckled a bit as he handed me the box. If you live somewhere where your neighbours or mail man will see the package and you don't want them to know you vape you might want to consider a PO box or shipping it to a friend or something.

I really think S&B should be using different wording on the customs form for customer privacy. When I mailed in my broken unit I put "aromatherapy device" on the customs form. The clerk at Canada Post knew exactly what it was (again the great thing about Vancouver is no one cares if an adult tokes) but at least that wording would give you an out if someone asked questions.

They could be even more vauge than that, I think battery would be a fine description of the product =) Just look at China exporters. They pretty much give a description of the product as the part that weighs the most. Metal tube for an ecig atomizer, etc.

That is sort of what I was hoping for and I'm glad to hear it from somebody else, thanks for sharing your experience!
I suppose at the end of the day, even though it seems insane when you add the price of the two, I might end up with both a Crafty and Mighty at some point (unless something better or a replacement comes out) but I think I will get the one I want the most, the Crafty, first! I love how it looks in pics and I know it's going to blow me away if/when I can get it!
I also hope that this registers more interest with the company, in their "Smallest S&B vaporizer" as that is what I want! Their next model will probably be Crafty 2 or Mighty Slim Mini !
And I know they wont know this (unless they read here!) but a knowledgeable vaporist with 1 years experience is prepared to invest in their one product that had a ropey beginning, because I am confident in their ongoing improvements and commitment to supplying successful machines!
I'm not very far from one of their service centers, and as it says around page 288, @vts I think says "If you have a back-up portable, you should have no problem owning a Crafty atm." and I remember this from faulty chinese stuff, as long as you have a unit to cover any possible down time, it's not too bad at all. And that's even with that slow China post boat!!

In the warranty period, and beyond, I will use the unit as I like with limited regard for temperature, cooling down, or when I charge it, in the hope that they may learn from any failures to improve future releases.
So, thanks again for your help! Two things I must search this thread for now are "battery replacement price" and "Solar",
as I hope to compliment my Crafty charging with solar, (wind???) 12v car, and/or power bank power, and need to find the mAh requirements.

I so look forward to getting mine, I had cardboard cutouts of Crafty and Mighty sizes last night and pretending to hold and vape from them! Hope nobody saw me!!

I may plan to do about 5-10 loads some days of the summer with a Crafty, I hope the latest versions will withstand more realistic usages!
I'm the kind of person who just charges and uses things how I like, not how the battery/device likes!
Wonder if the Mighty is really the one for me, oh here we go again haha!!

Yes haha, I've seen very similar funny ones!
Or some glass pieces I got would be marked "kitchenware"!
In fact, kitchenware also kinda covers everything relating to herbs, glass, metals and electronics!
"Battery" yes, Or also "Vape module" sounds maybe like innocent e-cig items.

Thanks a bunch for relaying this info... much appreciated! Same here in the sticks where I live in Ontario--no one would really care but still, I agree something completely discreet would be nice...

I like how my Solo came from an online retailer: in a plain brown box, totally nondescript.

Thanks again everyone who chimed in with their privacy experiences.

Back to the Crafty...

After using, and enjoying, the Solo and MFLB for a number of years, holy moly the Crafty is like the next level! I liken it to being a beer drinker (sipping on a Solo) and then suddenly one day going to hard stuff that is super smooth and tasty (Crafty), which for me would be a smooth, fine scotch. The Crafty just tastes so good and can really sneak up on you--but in a good way!

Crafty does seem to slightly edge out the Solo in efficiency now I've used if for a few weeks--just a little bit more "lift" after use I'd say, and I've used equal, measured amounts to compare since the Crafty can pack a bit more in the chamber. I do still use the solo for longer, "slower" sessions. Like when I feel like having just "a beer or two" (haha), and a couple of us share it around.

It's cool how they're just different. And now I see why some ppl have many vapes...

Cheers all, sweet forum :) :peace:

The crafty holds a charge for roughly 3 loads.
You will have to full recharge your crafty 2-4 times to meet that usage habit.

It also won't stand well to that sort of constant heavy use over the years.
I would probably suggest a mighty.

Thanks, this is right in line with the stats from the Crafty FAQ.
I'm always surprised when reminded that the Craftys battery/heater ratio is half the Mightys, I imagined it would be more equally matched or around 75% ability of the Mighty.
Your thoughts also seem to be heavily endorsed here judging by the likes your post received!!
It seems much wiser to get the heavier duty Mighty first and then use the Crafty for light stealth duties only.
Or I could go against all wisdom, get the Crafty first, and supplement/rotate it with my two other
portables depending on the situation.
All that re-charging does get tiresome I agree, on me, as well as the vape. It's one of the reasons I bought a desktop, to take my mind off recharging!!
This cardboard
Mighty cutout that I have here now doesn't seem so big anymore, but
still, the Crafty one seems beautifully small!

Not too long ago, I think the Solo may have done me as my only vape forever, until I tried a Volcano!
Now I'm looking for something a little different to the Solo for outdoor,
it's reassuring to read your positive thoughts on the Crafty's performance

No problems.

I love my solo, and it still has a place, but the Crafty and Mighty's performance is unparalleled.

I often use my solo with groups of friends, to help support my crafty.
You could use your solo to support a crafty, but I know what will happen.... you will always reach for the crafty hahaha. That's what happens with me!

As much as I love my crafty, it's just not designed for heavy use. And what you have outlined (5-10 bowls a day), would be considered heavy use.

I would go the Mighty if you know you won't be able to help yourself lol.

It's true! Or I might quickly grow tired of having to carry multiple devices and keep them all topped up.
I'll have to consume MULTIPLE Volcano bags and think it over!
I originally wanted something very stealthy for vehicle and public use, but I could get a Mighty and something cheap like an Imag+ for the stealth/E-cig look. My P2 is good for stealth but hard to fill on the move and unreliable.
I now imagine the Crafty to be like an expensive, advanced, and (somewhat) reliable P2 that performs better and is easy to fill,
because it's really small, stealthy and also has enough battery for 3-4 loads.
I'm a small bit sad if I get a Mighty, I wont need my Solo ha!

Did they upgrade crafty's usb port at some point? Because mine has pretty low hours and the port seems to be failing, and I kinda remember when it was a topic of conversation here. It may be wishful thinking.

Hey @grokit
No USB port upgrade from what I noticed.
I'm almost certain it hasn't been upgraded, I've seen 2.04, 2.05, 2.08.

Can you clarify what you mean by the port failing?
Not charging at all, intermittently charging or loose cable causing intermittent charge?

There was discussion about the port being loose and the USB cable feeling loose, but infact the pins that make the connection feel firm, are on the cable itself.
A swap out of the cable resolved that issue for people.

And in many other cases of outright failure, it turned out to be the USB cable or the AC wall adapter it came with.

Try another cable and another source (e.g. samsung wall adapter) so long as it does not exceed 2.1 amp @ 5v

Good luck!

To be without a crafty is an awful feeling

After changing chargers/cables around a few times with only sporadic success, I got it to charge by putting a small blade-like probe into the crafty's usb port and moving up what seemed like a flat male connector or guide that goes inside the usb cable connector tip, it needed to be re-centered because it had moved out of the way and the cable tip was going around it completely. Hopefully that will work for a while anyways.
