ABV for comparison. On the left, about 15 pulls with the crafty at max 410'f. I was pulling until there was no more vapour. On the right is abv from my volcano with the metal puck at 9 which is about 439'f. I got 2 super bags of vapour, a 3rd bag of so so vapour, and a 4th bag of weakish vapour.

I don't know why the crafty's abv is so much darker than the volcano's, even though i was vaping at higher temps with the volcano. The crafty really seems to zap the flower, i have never seen my volcano put out abv dark like the crafty, even at setting #10.

A portable is designed for a different purpose than a desktop, having said that, the volcano just blows it away in all areas. Much more and thicker vapour, much less harsh even at higher temps.

Also, at max temps with the crafty you get the sense that something's almost burning a little. I never get that with my volcano.

a comparison even with those results is enough for me....... portable vs volcano

High, y'all, ima post about the first deep cleaning since I got the crafty.

1. Daily x 3 use for 6-7 weeks

2. Never cleaned cooling heads.

3. Finally got them apart, soaked for thirty minutes in 100% ethanol because that's what I have.

4. Rinsed with water, dried, everything totally clean and undamaged.

I brushed the heating chamber, swabbed it with ethanol. Intuitively stuffed the entire bottom of unit in me mouth.
Blew the hell out of it. Air definitely came out of the chamber. Don't know if any dust came out.

The ethanol soak did not damage the hologram or the o-rings.

Edit. I'm saving the ethanol for reuse. I'll never let this shit go long again.

i wanted to clean my cooling unit... checked the user manuel and watchted vape critics youtube video about cleaning the crafty/mighty...but in my opinion cleaning it the way it is recommended or shown by vape critic is for me to laborious... i am remembering that i put the cooling unit disasambled in a glass and the i cooked water in a hot water kettle and pulled it in the glass after that i let it few minutes in the hot water... then cleaned it with a cotton q tip... and repeated the process... is there something wrong doing it that way any drawbacks any risk damaging the cooling unit... ??? how do you clean your ct...

Ya i confirm that too. It's because crafty its 10% conduction 90% convection while the volcano is 100% convection.

Do you mean the sliding piece with the logo/holograms on it? If so, sliding it back didn't allow any more or less bud through. That piece simply locks the top and bottom halves of the cooling unit together.

If you find you're getting too much bud through, you might consider a different grind, or changing the dryness of your bud.

Another option is to use the oil pad on top, it acts as a screen too in that capacity. I've also read of a few people replacing the screen in the cooling unit with the replacement screen for the bottom of the bowl.

Thanks for the tip. I ll try that because for the moment the oil pad is mandatory or material finish in the coolling chamber..

Ummm..........where do you get those percentages?

Here in this topic and it makes sense when you see that at the same temperature crafty's abv is a lot more darker. Plenty is doing me the same, abv more darker than the cano for same temp and its due to the vaporisation technic.

With the volcano there is the place to do 100% convection not with crafty or mighty and when i look to the abv i am pretty sure that is the reason.

Yea it's much better now
I'm packing it full and getting nice clouds with minimal coughing. So leaving the whole cooling chamber in alcohol for under an hour won't alter the taSte? Do I have to let it dry for a certain amount of Time Before using it again?

An hour is fine. Only start using again once the alcohol evaporates (in other words naturally dries) and you should be good to go!

Yea I left it in hot water and then blew air through it then did a dry run without anything in it at max temp. That should have worked.

Forgive my confusion but I'm thinking that the darker the ABV the better the unit is extracting medicine? Looks like the crafty is extracting more than the volcano since it's darker but not charred. What am I missing?

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too

When testing the volcano are you leaving the herb chamber on or removing it between bag fills?

Because if you leave the thing on the heat source it will cook the herb more and result in darker ABV.

edit.

In my experiments, if I finish a bowl on my Crafty @ 185 (no more vapor) my volcano will still produce vapor from that ABV even at the same temp.

Some folks dont want any conduction because at high temp its seriously getting you close to charred burned some way while with 100% convection it's impossible. That being said its more for security reason finaly because concerning the extraction it's the same quantity of medecine that you will get but not for the quality if you are at high temp.

For the record this is what S&B say:

'Crafty is a full hot air convection vaporizer with additional conduction heating of the filling chamber.'

Make what you will out of that statement.

But I fancy it means if you could remove the filling chamber of the Crafty inbetween hits, the same as a volcano. And put the sane amount of air through at the same flow rate as a volcano it would leave very similar ABV.

I can confirm that when I use the crafty in full convection mode using a miniVAP cone and basket module, the ABV comes out lighter than when I use the device as designed. The taste is different as well.

I believe there is significant conduction and thermal radiation going on when you use it as designed.

It seems my crafty has stopped working..

I've had it for a couple weeks and have loved it. But today it doesn't seem to be heating up? When I turn it on the red light comes on but it never turns green. I checked the app and the temp isn't moving. I tried putting it in boost mode but still no luck. Really bummed out. Sent them an email. Anyone have any other ideas?

I think the app asks for the serial number to stop people from toying with their friend's vapes. There's no technical reason for it.

I also just posted version 0.2.

T92Z8BI.png

The bluetooth communications have been made much more efficient so the app will start up very quickly. This also means less of a delay in temp changes taking effect. And yes, that screenshot is in ºF mode. If you're in the US it will auto-select it, everybody else get ºC out of the box. You can change units by clicking on the temperature display. It will also remember which mode you prefer on subsequent launches.

I have one more major feature I hope to add that I think will make those without Macs envious but unfortunately I have to go back to coding for my day job on Monday so updates will be very slow.

I'll also post the source to GitHub soon. I have effectively built an iOS and OS X compatible Crafty library which I think would be good to have out there for anyone to use. In addition to opening up the Crafty to a new platform this can be used to add new features to the Crafty in future iOS apps. This also means if iOS users end up in the same boat Android 5 users are in now we have a way out!
I was wondering if you happen to have any documentation on the Bluetooth interface or could quickly send me a summary? ... if I had some clear documentation on how to query the temperature, adjust the temperature, etc than I might be able to find the time to write a Windows version of your app. If you are using any specific libraries on the Mac for the communication, then an explanation of that would be quite helpful to expedite figuring out the correct libraries/methodologies from a Windows perspective ...

Edit: Ok ... should have finished catching up on the thread before posting ... I found your source code so the information is really all there in the Vape.m file ... thanks!

I have never come close to charring my flowers with my volcano, even at max temperature.

kimura, interesting handle, do you do juijitsu? Masahiko Kimura was one of japans greatest judo fighters of all time. He was challenged to a fight by a brazilian gracie dude that was half his size. In the fight, the japanese guy quickly threw the gracie and put him in an arm lock. that arm lock has been called a kimura ever since.

back on topic. I took my crafty on a walk today and got to appreciate it in the wild. I kept it in ziplock in my pocket and was super incognito.

sure, its no volcano......but my volcano isn't portable. so, yeah. *high fives* all around.

ok ... did a little research ... and looks like I'll be able to build a Windows 8.1 app when I have the time ... I'll see what I can do ... (earlier versions don't have the Bluetooth LE API's ... could maybe support Windows 8, but Windows 7 would require code to be device specific for every different Bluetooth LE device which is definitely not feasible ...)
