I gave it a go with an Arizer Solo stem with a domed screen, slightly inserted in the crafty bowl with no oil pad (herb was placed in the Crafty bowl). The vapor was warmer as predicted, but seemed more thick and potent by by-passing the cooling unit. I could have been imagining an increase in vapor, but it was certainly thicker. The stem was quite warm after a dozen hits.

a simple permanent solution would be a spare cooling unit with the inner cooling -baffles/-walls cut or grinded down.

So now I know why the vapor was harsh. I was stuffing it to the point where you can't see the silver part of the bowl anymore. Once you learn to pack it just enough to where it's almost full and pull the right way the taste really is good

Why would packing above the silver band make it harsh? The silver band is just the part that provides the conduction heating to the bowl.

I often pack the bowl as full as it will go, above the silver band. I don't think I'd call the hits "harsh", but they definitely have the ability to make me cough. This is due to the density of the hits that are achievable. When packed that full, there is a LOT more THC ready for immediate vaporization, making the hits much more dense.

Are you sure this isn't what's happening to you?

I notice this as well.
Pack a full bowl and the first hit can be overwhelming and cause a coughing fit!
If i just cover the screen and use the oil pad i can usually cash the bowl in a hit or two, no coughing.

I agree that it is directly related to the amount and density of the vapour ingested in one hit.
Which is related to amount of actives available for release during the first hit.
Which is then related to the amount of material packed.

Positive. What temp are you using to get the biggest clouds without it being too harsh ?
I'm trying to figure out the best temp and pack technique to get the biggest clouds but still taste good

I typically use either 180°-190° C for my starting temp, and usually boost to 200°-210°.

If I'm by myself, I usually edge on the higher side. Sometimes I start lower though, just to experiment. And I usually pack my bowls to the brim, using a Santa Cruz Shredder.

And to clarify, when you say harsh, what exactly do you mean? Does it just make you cough? Does it taste bad? Etc.

Turns out i learned a lesson. By accident during a session I clicked back the piece on the cooling chamber and I guess that allows bud to escape into the chamber because i decided to clean it because it was so harsh I couldn't understand why and what do you know
The cooling chamber was stuffed with brown gunked up bud. So much that Im surprised I was even getting any hits at all.

Do you mean the sliding piece with the logo/holograms on it? If so, sliding it back didn't allow any more or less bud through. That piece simply locks the top and bottom halves of the cooling unit together.

If you find you're getting too much bud through, you might consider a different grind, or changing the dryness of your bud.

Another option is to use the oil pad on top, it acts as a screen too in that capacity. I've also read of a few people replacing the screen in the cooling unit with the replacement screen for the bottom of the bowl.

Glad we found the culprit because its anathema to hint at the Crafty producing anything less than flavor supreme!

Got a new batch, no clue what its called but it seemed to grind down into a fine powder kief heavy. Packed about 3/4 bowl with oil pad tight on top over load. Buzz overload! I want to say it was about 12 hits at 185 then another 8 at 210! In my experience crafty likes fine grind on dry herb and packed tight. This load we shared dumped out a dark dark brown puck about 1/3 the original size.

Not true. If you notice when you put the cooling chamber back together it is that hologram piece that clicks together to make the two pieces stay together. If you slide it it allows the piece to slightly open and some bud will leak in. There would be absolutely no other way bud would be able to leak through.

Yea it's much better now
I'm packing it full and getting nice clouds with minimal coughing. So leaving the whole cooling chamber in alcohol for under an hour won't alter the taSte? Do I have to let it dry for a certain amount of Time Before using it again?

Agreed completely that the sliding hologram piece holds the two halves of the cooling unit together. However, I disagree that it allowed some bud to leak through from the bowl.

If the hologram piece were not clipped in, the top half of the cooling unit could possibly start to detach. However, when the cooling unit is attached to the main unit, the bowl is below where this disconnnect would happen. You would start to get fresh air into the cooling unit, a la a carb, and any other foreign material could make its way in at that point too.

But not bud you have loaded in your bowl. It's sealed off and isolated from that point.

Hope this makes sense, it's late and I'm tired.

NB: Anyway The first time I attempted to produce the Emod it was a sunday and I did not have everything on hand so I went on using a glue gun to attach the glass to the pastic, it worked for a while till it got to hot and fell away ( I have a vid showing that funny moment)

The second time after a trip to the shop where I bought some other type of JB weld (don't have it over here), on the box it said up 150° I was a little suspicious but I thought, well it must work!!, well it did till I tried to exit the mod after a hot sesh, and guess what, I was left with the glass part with the glue in my hand and the pastic still lodge in the Crafty, damn!

The thrid time, I used this product and it works great!!! It did take 3 days to be fully dried!!

E-Mod

I'm afraid I have some devastating news my E mod has once again come apart, it did last some 3 weeks of heavy Xmas use but decided 2015 was not to be and fell apart

The paste will just not cooperate with the on and off heat I guess and eventually give way even though it was firmly fixed for a good while. I'll have to order some JB weld on Ebay and try that although @elmomuzz and others who have use JB Weld, do you abuse yours a lot, do you see any signs of deterioration ?

Meanwhile I have been working on a new idea, transforming a bowl into an adapter.

I have many bowls but none are the perfect candidates to create the exact replica of the sliding pattern of the original cooling unit.

I did managed to get something done, but not quite quite, I broke of one of the ledges while sanding it down :(

i2tnADh.jpg

All in all it works but I fear that since my ledge is not EXACTLY the same as the original the (roughish) glass will eventually wear away the thin plastic grooves on the unit itself and since this is not replaceable...

Thanks for the pic. I have an extra cooling unit now so I'm gonna sacrifice one and make one of these. I notice the case on my replacement Crafty seems to have come out of the mould better than my previous one. I had little vanes breaking on my original, then the catastrophic failure, but I don't see that happening on my new one. It looks and feels a little stronger.

t-dub,

elmomuzz

That just happened...
All four of the unreinforced vanes/fins have broken off or cracked on my mighty. It's the only design flaw I have noted. Purely cosmetic though.

I'm uncomfortable with the way the above adapter looks. The adhesive is to close or possibly in the air path. I'm going to order a 3 pack of cooling units and make a few more. I'll take some pictures of the process.

One of my unreinforced fins broke when using it as leverage to pry out the o-ring from around the heating chamber. It's definitely a design flaw, it will likely happen to all of the unreinforced fins eventually. They are too delicate.

Small bowls: Mission accomplished. EVO elb cap.

Smaller bowls work best when you don't spread them out so thin. My analogy would be making pancakes, the thinner they get, the faster they cook. When packing small loads: by covering the Crafy's bottom screen, it only forms a very thin layer and the heat consumes it pretty quickly.

Using this EVO elb cap, I stretched my session out to double what I have been getting.

I stir my Crafty, I know it's probably not necessary, but I just am superstitious like that, I figure I could find a few more surfaces to vape.

After my ELB cap stopped producing, I just dumped it directly into the Crafty and go into boost, that stirs it and gives one or two solid rips.

I feel great, a perfect dose for a pick me up without disabling the user. The cap fits very well, nothing is forced, the top screwed back in easily, and there's no rattle.

Hi, are those the VapeXhale Cloud EVO caps? Like this one : http://www.puffitup.com/VapeXhale-Screens-p/vapexhalescreens.htm

How much grams you put in the caps? Why don't use the liquid pad?
