Crafty/Crafty+ by Storz & Bickel

Finally got around to using some concentrates. They weren't of the greatest quality, they weren't pliable, they crumbled. Packed a small amount of herb, no liquid pad. Worked fantastic.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The Crafty handled the task like a champ, I started at 345, 355, 360, 370, 385+

The clouds just kept coming, and coming, and coming.

Quite pleasing effects, totally relaxed, no anxiety at all, completely medicated.

This might be the cleanest way imaginable to ingest concentrates. They taste like heaven.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

I feel that if you know how to work the dial (ironic because there's no dial), if you work the temperature ranges, you get a much better experience.

Standard settings would do the trick, but your herb isn't optimized unless the vaporist has a sense of exactly when to bump the temp up in small, progressive increments.

That's half the fun of the vape, finding how to optimize each strain. Each strain responds differently, and if you just rely on the standard temp settings, you won't be getting the fullest experience of that herb, and more importantly you won't be getting the fullest experience of this vape, and everything it's capable of.
So flowers on bottom, some concentrates on top and no liquid pad is your suggestion for concentrates. I like it but does any leak into the heater?

You know, this worked extremely well with a dryer concentrate. I tried it with more of a full melt bubble, and it was almost as if the layer of herb blocked the flow of heat a little too much for my liking.

I would not recommend putting anything really gooey/sticky/melty near the bottom screen. That's why I laid the herb bed, to catch the drippings, and it worked to mixed result. I think if you have something gooey/sticky/full melt go for the liquid pad.

______________________________________________________________________________________

The liquid pad is all one circuit, so to speak. The oil pad is made up of one long wire that's been compacted into that sponge. When that starts getting hot, it's like one big filament, when the drippings start dripping, they fall onto another part of the wire that's still super hot below: instant vaporization.

Turn your Crafty up to maximum power, let the heater pre-heat the oil pad. Place material onto the pad, if it starts melting before your eyes, put your top on and start sippin.

Ideally there would be a way where the oil pad would be getting max heat; if you could put a layer of herb on top of the pad; I think the temperature wouldn't be as hot as the dial is suggesting; because the wire-pad is absorbing a lot of the heat. The amount of heat loss isn't enough to not cook your herb. Gotta give this a try.... could be heavenly. There would need to be another screen in there somehow; no herb tangled up in the liquid pad for me, that's just wrong.

I got a better result this morning using the Storz Grinder. I've been using the SCS, but I figured that they include the acrylic grinder for a reason; it was probably designed for their products. Anyone that vapes knows this orange acrylic grinder is competent, it produces a finer grind than your average metallic grinder.

Lastly, don't rely on the auto shut-off, power her down (manually) ASAP, that one minute will cost you at some point.

VapeLog is working well. Was surprised that I didn't have to enter my serial number to connect. Thanks @Sasquatch_Jr! In addition to iOS & Android, Crafty can now be used with a Mac or Windows computer (with emulator).

I think the app asks for the serial number to stop people from toying with their friend's vapes. There's no technical reason for it.

I also just posted version 0.2.

The bluetooth communications have been made much more efficient so the app will start up very quickly. This also means less of a delay in temp changes taking effect. And yes, that screenshot is in ºF mode. If you're in the US it will auto-select it, everybody else get ºC out of the box. You can change units by clicking on the temperature display. It will also remember which mode you prefer on subsequent launches.

I have one more major feature I hope to add that I think will make those without Macs envious but unfortunately I have to go back to coding for my day job on Monday so updates will be very slow.

I'll also post the source to GitHub soon. I have effectively built an iOS and OS X compatible Crafty library which I think would be good to have out there for anyone to use. In addition to opening up the Crafty to a new platform this can be used to add new features to the Crafty in future iOS apps. This also means if iOS users end up in the same boat Android 5 users are in now we have a way out!

can you guys tell me how your packing the chamber for the best tasting results? I had it fully packed but I didn't press it down too much and I found the vapor really harsh in the beginning. More harsh then a bong hit. But in a weird way I can't explain. I thought maybe I'm packing it too tight or it's the temps or the bud? I had a sour diesel that is dry and ashes white when smoked in the bong and tastes pretty good and I mixed it with some OG that tasted good and smoked good too but it was still a little wet. Could maybe this be why? The vape has been making me cough though more then a bong hit for some reason. But it does have a better high then the bong thats for sure

410'F is kinda harsh for me. what temps are you using?

I actually only had it up to 360. It started to taste better towards the end when I increased the temp actually so that's weird

Perhaps it's just a larger hit then you're used to? The Crafty/Mighty are capable of giving massive hits. With that much THC and other cannabanoids available, maybe you just weren't used to it?

After spending the whole day with it my first impression is that I like it a lot. However, it wont be replacing my volcano. The volcano is just that much of an vapour outputting powerhouse.

It's a portable version of the volcano, just like a laptop is to a desktop computer.

There is a noticeable difference in efficiency, the same pinch in my volcano will get me much more vapour than it does in my crafty. but its reasonable.

Do you guys prefer 10 sec pulls or 5 secs? I'm leaning towards 10 secs being more effective.

I will update as I continue testing. I'm interested in adding glass and water filtration to my set of toys.

DorianGray,
I actually find that my Crafty kicks my Plenty's ass. It makes no sense I know but the Plenty is kind of a back up vape for me that doesn't see much action. But the couple of times I've used it after owning a Crafty left me feeling very underwhelmed.

I would definitely hold on to the Volcano. Having both is the ultimate luxury in my opinion while I like the Crafty quite a bit, the Volcano is much easier on the throat and lungs (at least for me)

Yea your right because I don't find the crafty as smooth as everyone makes it out to be. But definitely better then the pax. I'm gonna experiment with maybe not packing the chamber as much to see if that smooths it down a bit. I find myself even on 360F to not even be able to take a 10 second pull. It gets too hot

god bless you for creating this app, its made its way to the top of my toolbar menu, right next to mission control, for easy access to be launched. (because god knows, it will be launched, a lot.)
It's Fnder/Launchpad/Mission Control/VapeLog. lol!

I haven't been able to get it to write to the cvs file yet though, but again, thank you so much. its awesome.

I have had my crafty for almost a week now, some sessions were better than others.

This morning's session in the incoming sunlight; awesome.

How have your guys' sessions been using smaller loads?

When I pack a full chamber, this unit is terrific.

I'm slightly disappointed how efficiently it handles smaller loads, I can't seem to figure out why.

I adjusted my temps to 325 to start; full chamber I'll do 345.

Bowl was kicked in two unsatisfying hits at like 340F. I'm not a fan of using the liquid pad, I think it takes away heat, the vapor becomes thinner; maybe I'm imagining it.

What they really need to make, is like the insert for the Volcano's solid valve. That little screen that adjusts itself by how fat you pack the valve, the screen on the post thingy.

Anyone else having problem putting the mouthpiece back on the unit when it's hot? The rubber ring gets too dry to glide against the MP.

Made it mostly to scratch my own itch but glad to hear that others find it useful.

There was a tiny issue with recording that's fixed. Thanks for catching that. http://wikisend.com/download/266578/VapeLog.zip

Also the source code is now on GitHub.

question:

do you use your filling tool when the chamber is hot?
does it melt /bend from the heat??

This is incredible man, I have to ask the question:

Are you able to do this for Windows? You would instantly become one of my heroes! :D

I've seen different opinions in this thread and not much on the S&B site. I'm finally going to try concentrates on this thing. The general consensus is to put it on *top* of the liquid pad, correct? Can you also put flowers below the pad?

Hi everyone,

Here is my 2 cents thoughts on the crafty.

It's a must have for the "on the go", forest walk, poker party at friend's homes etc. My brother gets the Solo and it's obvious that the crafty is better. First on the resistance draw, a lot more easier, and then on the size.. The taste is divine. When you look at the bowl you see that its the volcano / plenty system miniature being used so it's normal that the crafty is so good on vaporisation.

But it wont be my desktop vap, not enough strong. Bowl too small and battery too weak.. S&B cant do miracle by going beyond physics, they are engineers not prophetes even if what they do is magic ;)

And maybe a pad little smaller would be great because without the oil pad too much flower are finishing in the cooling chamber that makes it mandatory finally i think..because without some material not yet vaporised will get away...

The point that disapointed me with the crafty is that even plugged to a power bank the battery of the crafty is drained anyway, i hoped it would be by passed.. Except that i think its the best portable on the market right now.. :)
