The Herbalizer

Thanks for the replies. If using a water tool without water would be just like a steamroller, then I guess I should get that so I can have flexibility and decide what I like better.

I shouldn't have any trouble leaning over the Herbalizer, but dealing with water every session, and whatever extra maintenance is involved with that seems potentially annoying due to my injury, but if it's optional that would be nice. I would like to try hits dry and with water.

I'll make a post to the DHGate thread. Thanks for the tip on those deals.

EDIT: By the way, which DHGate glass pieces would you recommend for the Herbalizer?

@od1 ,
there are many good options for Herbie. Another dry hit option, with all glass path is a long glass mouthpiece, like @Oregonglassblower OGB's one shown below. He can customize length, bend angle, mouthpiece etc to get a super-egonomic fit for you.

That black shiney adapter is from @Ratchett and his Delta 3D store. You also use it to connect to any hydratube.

HT can be used dry or wet. IMO, when used dry it is very very similar to Steamroller.

The cheap Chinese glass is 95% of the function of good American glass with a cost of 1/10 so it depends on your budget.

Thanks, I got a PM with a recommendation for the Herbie steamroller. It seems some posters in this thread like it more than anything else, so I've been contemplating going that route, but then some others think the cheap Chinese glass is basically the same. It's hard to decide without personal experience, but I would like to narrow it down before purchasing. I only want to buy one thing if possible.

How desirable is having the carburetor? It seems like that's something that wouldn't be in the DH Gate water tools. Apparently I could get another piece for a carb (or use the whip in the chain to act as one?), but I don't know, I kind of want it included. Thoughts on carb vs no carb?

The only advantage of the carb is that you can just lift your finger off the carb hole versus pulling the glass or connector off to clear.

If you only want to buy one piece, you might want to consider something other than the steamroller. The steamroller is a one trick pony in it can only be used dry. If you get some type of water tool, you could use it with or without water. Also, think about what type of opening/mouthpiece you like. Do you enjoy a wide open bong-type or something with a mouthpiece?

Like @c76man said, the Steamroller is a one trick pony.
A hydratube or a water bubbler can be used with water or dry so they'd be more versatile. I do not own a Steamroller but have tried one and IMO it's not that different from using a dry hydratube or bubbler.

You need to decide if you prefer a hydratube (HT) or a bubbler. I prefer a HT for the direct connection.
I am not a fan of carburetors for most pieces. And on a HT, the unit has to be removed after every hit (since it can't/shouldn't be left on Herbie unsupported). So, it is not needed.

Ok, so for one thing, as of today the steamroller is not on sale anymore. If I were to get it, I'd ask them to honor the sale price, but at this point I'm thinking of getting this Matrix bong recommended to me in the DH Gate thread: http://www.dhgate.com/store/product/new-thick-stable-10-inches-25cm-tall-vapexhale/388645300.html

I don't have much experience with glass, so I don't know what type of opening I'd prefer, but the mouthpiece shape differences did cross my mind. I'm guessing ultimately it's not too big of a deal regardless? Actually, what are the pros and cons of the difference mouthpiece styles?

From what I understand, that Matrix piece can be used as a hydratube and sit on the bowl, or you could connect a whip to the lower piece and use it as a bubbler, correct? I'm not familiar with all these glass pieces, and I want to be sure I understand what I'm getting.

I think I'd also need an 18mm adapter. Where's the best place to get the right one for the Herbalizer?

I'm thinking I'll end up using the hydratube piece, and I may want to use it dry. Apparently I could get a carb adapter, but if I'd need to remove it and a carb wouldn't make a difference anyway, then I guess I won't worry about it.

By the way, I got a suggestion for using the Storz & Bickel dosing capsules with Herbie. Anybody know who has the best deal on those? Or maybe I could get them from the adapter store, and cut down on shipping costs.

EDIT: Thanks, I've read about the snugness, but don't they make 18mm adapters for Herbie?

I pair an "Assassin Necktie" (http://glassblowersdirect.com/home/assassin-2-0/) with my Herbie, and it gives just the right moisture (for me). I use a universal rubber-like adapter (https://delta3dstudios.com/nearly-universal-vape-to-waterpipe-adapter-medium/). One may lay the Assassin Necktie horizontal (like, on the table) and not spill water.
Here is a picture of the Necktie next to an Fbomb. I use the Assassin Necktie with many different vaporizers I own: The Mighty; EVO; concentrate pens, etc.

That's an interesting piece. Is portability the main advantage for that one, aside from it providing you the right amount of moisture? I think for now I'll get the cheap DH Gate bong, and see how I like it.

It looks like the adapter I need is the "v2.0" one from this company, correct? https://delta3dstudios.com/plugin-vaporizer-accessories/herbalizer-vaporizer/

Anything else you all would suggest ordering from that site? They have some interesting knick-knacks.

I plan on trying the Storz & Bickel Dosing Capsules with Herbie too, since that was recommended to me. It looks like some people like them, and some don't due to fragility and ease of use reasons, etc.

It really depends to which degree of V.A.S. (Vaporizer Acquisition Syndrome) you are afflicted: you may need one of everything.

I own both a Volcano and a Mighty. I don't use my Volcano much. But the dosing caps in the Mighty are great for on-the-go swaps while you are out and about. How would you use the caps? It might be just an extra step: placing a clean screen on a small load and then a small, inert glass bead (get your Mom's rosary out) as a spacer to secure the load may meet your needs.

I like this @Ratchett Delta 3D misc piece for connecting glass to glass or as a misc connector that can help you experiment. And it's cheap.

Grinder funnel?
Screens?

That's funny. Hopefully I can keep the V.A.S. to a minimum, but I do want to get everything that I need.

I have a Crafty so the dosing caps may be useful for that, but I've just been using the Herbalizer since I'm not as mobile right now. They should keep the bowl clean, and apparently they're easy to clean. The trick you suggest is interesting. It is annoying to have herb particles get stuck to the top screen, so I'm assuming the screen and bead trick mitigates that.

I'm going to acquire a Lift Innovations grinder, so I think I'll get a grinder funnel for it.

Which screens would be for Herbie?

Seems like people like the reducer. What could I use it for with the bong I plan to get? www.dhgate.com/store/product/new-thick-stable-10-inches-25cm-tall-vapexhale/388645300.html

I think I'll also get a vape tool with a scoop etc. Which tool do you all like for Herbie?

And what size cleaning plugs do I need for that bong?

Thanks!

I use a tightly woven screen about the size of a quarter that I put over the bowl. I do the same thing for my Mighty. Since loading/opening capsules is a proper pain in the ass, and I am very lazy (and old), I might use caps for mobility, but I just use screens around the house for ease of keeping things (a little) cleaner. Hey, there is no one right way to do things. Find a way to maximize your pleasure, and maybe now and then experiment with other techniques until you know them all and decide for yourself. A demitasse spoon is a great loader, so is a plastic sample spoon from an ice cream store. Or one of those tiny souvenir spoons celebrating local historical spots. Coke spoon? Are they still popular? Can anyone tell I'm stoned? No, really.

Here's another idea for your Herbie. There is no limit to your imagination. Silicone tubing to a reduced D020 (?) I forget the number/name

We have the exact same screen and whip setups for both vapes.

Can anybody give me some tips on how to clean my silicone whip? I read you can boil it in water but idk how safe that is.

I don't have any ISO at the moment and I would prefer not to leave the house to go buy some.

I am not a chemist, but boiling (212 degrees F) shouldn't hurt the silicone. I have silicone bakeware that can be put in an oven up to 500 F. Granted, all silicones aren't equal, I suppose, but I'd give it a try.

After boiling, you might try running a piece of cord or twine through the hose, and tie a piece of cloth to the twine. Tie the opposite end to a doorknob, and pull the cloth through the hose. Or if the hose is short enough, ram a piece of cloth through the tubing with a wooden dowel or the like to remove any loose residue.

PPN

Volute of Vapor
Using hot water you can even reclaim some goodies but it's not the best. imo the best is to use a long needle to push the reclaim out, but that's only possible if you cut your whip and use shorter piece of tubing. It's better to do that right after a session while whip is still warm.

Do you like the mighty better or the Herbalizer better?

Two vaporizers that I have not used, owned or even tried are the Mighty and the Crafty, so I am at a loss to make any comparison.
I tend to use desktops units more however so I would grab for the Herbalizer at home.
Perhaps one day I will try the Mighty, then I can weigh in on an educated level.
I was fortunate to meet the well known @ChooChooCharlie yesterday, and got to try the Mighty.
And to stay on topic, he was able to see, study and bear witness to the speed and flexibility of the Herbalizer.
I can now make some comparison.
I never have minded hot vapor or hot mouthpieces, and I prefer very short vapor paths.
The Herbalizer if used with a short glass path is hot for some, but I like it, and prefer not to diffuse the vapor with long whips or steamroller (which is an excellent product by the way).
I like BOTH the Herbalizer and the Mighty for different reasons.
Herbie is set to go in ten seconds, and gets you there quick.
Mighty (and it's younger brother (as @ChooChooCharlie calls it) is clean and cool convection taste and effect, and a very easy draw. The only drawback I saw was that it takes a minute to get to heat.
Herbalizer is all of this to me also (but faster), the drawback here being the attachment to a cord.
Every vape has a silver lining.
I can not say which I prefer.
Tell me where I am going to be and what I will be doing, then I can clearly say!
The herbie can certainly do that and @Vitolo 's method should work well but eventually you are going to have to deal with oil dripping down into the guts of the machine. Mistakes happen.
Mistakes sure happen all of the time.
Any recommendation I made toward a way to use runny oil or ejuice hopefully implied using miniscule amounts. I use a needle and place the smallest of drops on cotton, or wicking material, so the color is still a small dot, not an infused piece of cotton or even a cotton ball with a match head sized stain on it
I place the half match head sized drop on the top.
Heat is moving in that direction, and as vapor is formed the juice/runny oil is being depleted.
Another tip in the technique is do not stop the session cold......
if you shut fan leave heater on and do hits from the whip (or whatever device is handy)
oils, and ejuice when not saturated, run from heat, so they stay well in the ball o cotton.
A good note is when done, remove the cotton ball and wipe out the chamber walls with tissue to be certain.
Using hot water you can even reclaim some goodies but it's not the best. imo the best is to use a long needle to push the reclaim out, but that's only possible if you cut your whip and use shorter piece of tubing. It's better to do that right after a session while whip is still warm.
Sublimate residue is forced by heat away from the bowl... into the tubing...
and is easily retrieved by a tool or qtip (I used a qtip)
The rest of the tube will stay dry and clean.
The residue never tried to gather closer to the "plug in juncture, due to heat.
I have been able to using HOT temps, and Fan action ... combined with inhalation and tube manipulation to gather these into one large drip.
Note.. the entire tube is clean and dry, as is the path the oils ran from closest to the connector!
DSC02732.jpg

DSC02733.jpg

Left alone this gets firm and tacky and is easily "plucked" from the tube with a tool.
If left in the tube, it will have the same exact action as BHO or wax does, on the "heat end' of the tube..
and begin to bleed "tackiness" through...
YES... wax and THC resin can permeate silicone!

Sublimate manipulated into one drip:

I stumbled upon this MiniVAP basket mod for Herbie's chamber. I'm wondering if I should go for that, or try the Storz & Bickel dosing capsules.

Thoughts on which is better? Any other methods to consider for using dosing capsules to keep Herbie's chamber clean?

The mods for the minivap basket and dosing capsule have been around on the forum for awhile now , as for what is better I couldn't tell you . I honestly have only tried using the dosing capsule and they work well but my preferred method is to just use another screen on top of my flowers to keep the herbalizer top screen clean , I don't worry much about the bottom since it is always being heated from the bottom and kinda gets self cleaned and I brush the entire chamber out after ever session while still somewhat warm and stays allot cleaner that way . I am pretty sure @MinnBobber has used both the capsules and minivap method and prefers the minivap way . * Edit: found some more info and pics on this page for you - http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-herbalizer.9116/page-317
