Arizer Solo

I took a gong stem to my wet saw after a practice run. It turned out fine from a functional aspect, but aestheticly I did a bad job(so ashamed). The first(practice) stem was perfect, but one channel got to deep and went all the way through. So I chopped that into a shorty and moved on to the gong stem. Sloppy, but got it done. The tape fell off as soon as water hit it, unfortunately. That along with my solo that is already heavily modded for airflow, has basically no restriction. I think the meds is the only thing restricting air flow now. I guess I should test it side by side with my pvhes.

Ok time to sums things up!
A lot has been said about the new stems for the solo - both Ed's wood stem and Planet Vape PHVES.

I have been using Ed for couple of weeks and I gotten the PHVES about a week ago and been trying it a lot :)

First of I'd like to state that whoever purchase a Solo must also obtain one of these 2 awesome stems! So which one should you pick? - this will be the first time I ever review anything and please note I'm not native American so I apologize it I can't express myself 100% freely...

Build

PHVES - The PHVES stem (I have the "straight" model) looks almost identical to the stock glass stem but with small nicks and engraving along the stem increases airflow by miles, I also like the label PHVES engraved on the stem...it makes it look cooler...unfortunately just like the stock stem it could still break easily with shaky hands...I dropped it once and luckily nothing happened!
The PHVES also comes with "onboard" screen (wider than Ed's) that is important for fine grinding...however if you grind your herbs too much you might have bits of it coming through the screen...no additional screen has been received with the PHVES.
PHVES fits quite well in the solo but when it gets hot you can cause it to fall fairly easy tho it shouldn't happen.

Ed's Wood - Solid ! The wood stem is beautifully made and feels very strong, you can drop it as much as you like and nothing will happen, the SS chamber is also bigger than the PHVES glass chamber and easier to handle with double screening(more on that later on).
The chamber itself has been modified with a tight thick screen which is IMO the best...it requires much more cleaning tho, if not then the airflow will be decreased!
The airflow is just as good as PHVES and even better tho people might say otherwise...they pretty much identical in terms of airflow.
Ed also included 2 more extra screens which is awesome and a must for double screening.
The stem itself fits almost perfectly and when it gets hot you really have to shake it strongly to make it fall.
The SS chamber as some said can get loosen up and be removed...I actually like it as it makes it easier to maintain.

Performance
PHVES - The PHVES performance really well ! it produces the most fat and thick clouds, the taste is great but is not different to the stock stem but the clouds are almost endless :D
PHVES works great with the cotton ball technique.

Ed's Wood - Preformance is almost the same as PHVES but I think PHVES has a slight edge...
The SS chamber is bigger and IMO takes a bit longer to hit up ... which is causing a slightly more "wide" vapor ... the thing is that while PHVES might preform a little bit better, the taste is just ... a-m-z-i-n-g... I never tried wood like this and I never thought the taste will be better than glass (I thought glass is the high end of taste but I was wrong)...so for a slightly less dense vapor but with more flavor ... I'm not saying you wouldn't get thick clouds, I think its just a little harder to do so with the wood stem since the chamber is bigger and the herbs is with less contact with the heater element than the PHVES(once again these are slight differences).

Usage
PHVES - The way I see it PHVES is for home use only, as I wouldn't take it out and risk breaking it. of course you can use it outdoors but I rather not if possible.
The glass is easy to clean and therefore sharing shouldn't be a problem...you can reclaim the resin which is super important to me !

Ed's Wood - Never leave your home without a wood stem! you can toss it inside with no worries of breaking it! but its also nice to use at home, it all depends what you slightly care more (taste vs slightly thicker vapor)

Sharing this wood stem is harder than glass since its not as easy to clean - you cannot really reclaim since the wood doesn't get hot enough to scrape and alcohol is a bad for wood.
If you share it with friend the top wood might soak into spit of other users so its slightly less conferable to share.

Features

PHVES - pretty much what you see is what you get - pure dense vapor with great airflow for a decent price...this really should replace the stock stem ASAP. no additional screen is a let down.
I was able to do double screening with J.R.R screens but honestly I would like a perfect match screens...I was able to double screen tho with no problems - half of the screen goes inside and half stays at the edge of the glass chamber, but the screen won't fall and that's all that matters.

Ed's Wood - Free screens is awesome and needed for double screening...the SS chamber is designed perfectly to fit double screening...the top has nicks and is slight wider than the actual place to put the herb and therefore if you take the second screen after filling the chamber and just put it above it will fit perfectly and will never fall down! this is very classy!
But what I really liked is the "WONG" feature of Ed's wood stem!
I got a bong and I can connect it to the wood stem with no adapter whatsoever, this thing fits perfectly and I can hold the bong in one hand and I don't need to worry about it falling down...for the PHVES I would need to get a GoNG which cost more money...and with the wood I actually get it for free...

Price

PHVES is cheaper but for an international customer such as myself, I ended up paying the same amount for both stems, so in terms of price Ed's is simply a better deal - you get a stem that can be used indoors and outdoors with no risk of breaking, a "WoNG" ready device and yes it makes the solo looks nicer...

Conclusion

Having tried both I can safely say that this makes the solo a much better machine.
Arizer should be thankful and add PHVES as its stock glass and make a special version with Ed's wood (IMO) both are top notch but if you have to choose one I would go with Ed Wood stem simply because its a better deal and offers more features...

For myself - a guy who loves reclaiming, not being able to reclaim well as glass sucks...so for home use I try to use glass more...but if anyone of my friends comes and I'd rather have the wood stem connected to the bong since its easier to hold and handle.

I think the perfect Solo requires both stems and you wouldn't regret getting both...

That's it for now. I hope I wrote enough info...cheers and good day :)

Wow what a review/comparison you made Mosh, I really appreciate you and the time you have taken to explore both stems and the effort you put into typing all this out. Very well done and thanks for the feedback!

I have had a half dozen friends that I recommended a Solo to call me today.
They are a bit upset.
It seems that they bought new Solo units model MD2 and NO stems fit in them. has anyone else had this issue?

Vito

Thats perfectly normal and an artifact of their engineering improvements to make the stems fit better. a little heat and proper technique will get them going.

The trick as VST demonstrates in the video is a little heat and a gently rolling the stem (watch the video starting at the 3 minute mark) and you will be golden.

Over time all stems will loosen up and even these tight ones will fall out but a loose M106+ stem is still tighter than any pre M106 stem that I have seen.

Start around 3:00 min in to he video

BTW: I added that info to the wiki a while ago including the video since it was so helpful in showing the technique.

Yes... and I thank you for that. (sorry I did not come back with my findings)
I do see now the stem works well.
Side by side, I am not sure that I like the new one as much.
It seems in the 104, I can "lean the stem" a tiny bit, since it is looser... and get an occasional cloud of more massive proportion.
There is a pro and con to each I think.
When using Ed's Stems, I prefer to very easily rotate the stem, to get an occasional "lining up" of the cuts with the "breathers'.
So much to consider!
Maybe I had better start collecting all the Solo Models now!

Thanks m0sh, we agree with Ed, great work to let the community know there are choices available and the differences between them.

You will be happy to know about our very close to release PVHEGonG adapters, they are a hybrid between a PVHES stem and our Solo GonG adapters... giving you the best of both in a single compact adapter.

PlanetVape, do you know when you will have more PVHES stems in stock? After all these positive reviews, I really want to order a couple.

Also, is the Turbo model just a PVHES with a larger bowl?

I will jump in and comment that the bowl size is the same... there is just one large open bore rather than the small holes in a glass partition!

Hi Gandalf,
If everything goes according to plan we should have more by the end of this week.

SOLO vs. SOLO
I hate change. If it aint broke, why fix it, I always felt~
When I was sent the new model Solo to test, I was a bit taken aback at first by the fact that the stem did not fit. It is glass, and I did not want to force it.
I called Arizer immediatly, and they told me that the first time, you must push the glass forcefully and from then on it would be smooth. I was suspicious, and still a bit displeased at the change.
As most of you know, the solo comes with two stems, and one of those is bent.
The bent stem was the biggest offender when it came to wobble.. and also it could come out if you had "sticky lips".
I just changed my tune.
I love the new Solo! Of course that doesn't mean I am abandoning the M104- different vapes for different circumstances as you will see in this short video using very crumbly powdery Bubble Hash.. that I was able to keep upright thanks to a tighter stem!

Love the new pvhes stems makes the aolo a hole different vape. Has anyone noticed because of the grooves and rough nature of these new stems, they seem to be scratching the ss bowl. I was just wondering if I was the only one and are the bowls meant to take a beating? Or am i inhaling metal fragments.lol. waitin on my oracle now. Was watching vids, only infrared vape, heats in 10 seconds, three fan speeds, and from the video plumes. Looks like maybe not the most conservative but def thick vapes. Hope my fritted gets here in time. Found a Eric Ross no downstem beaker diffuser into a 8 arm perc up to a honey comb with a frosty pinch on top. Have to get some glass porn when i get the rig. Currently making mazar, sour d, headband, and burnt toast bho, hope its a good run taking some of my fave strains and doing this always has me nervous but stoke for the product. Peace. Vaped

My solo stopped making the beep noise when it turns on and off. Should I be worried?

Hey budbudbud, no worries,
To re-enable beep sounds: After the Solo has powered up and the blue light at the bottom is on solid, press and hold the up temperature button for about 4 seconds until you hear a quick beep, this beep indicates that beep sounds are re-enabled. Turn your Solo off and on again to verify that beeps have been re-enabled.

Hi Vitolo, just in case it hasn't been mentioned, it helps a lot to first run a brand new Solo at full power for a few minutes to let the ring get hot and expand a bit and then force a cold un expanded stem in. We have had a few new Solos though that just would not accept any but the smallest variance stems.

Sorry to hear about your continuing problems with your Solo hookedonvape. We know you have many issues with your Solo which your vendor will not replace since you told us you bought a refurb. Even before getting your PVHES stem, your Solo bowl and your existing glass stems were all severely scratched from alignment issues with your Solo. Our PVHES stems are all flame polished and cannot physically scratch any Solo bowls, even ceramic ones since the cuts are all under the top surface of the glass and do not contain any raised edges.

Your case is a good example of why you should only buy a new Solo from a reputable authorized dealer on FC's trusted vendor list http://fuckcombustion.com/sponsors/. :2c:

Glad your liking it. I think the SS bowl and slightly better battery life on the newer models is a plus also. Be warned though. They always start out like that but often get much looser with use and also get looser at they get warmer... Don't be surprised if in a few months it wont hold the stem as well as it used too. I need to try the o-ring trick. 2 of my 3 new models are much looser of substantial use. Still an improvement over the early ones...

Question: Where are you guys getting o rings for underneath the top?

I got my O-ring from tintest.. so perhaps a PM to him would elicit an answer, as to it's size.
he told me...
"just unscrew the cap, put the O ring on the stem (near the holes are on the inside)
put the stem in the solo (with the O ring on it) and replace the cap. The cap will hold the O ring in place, so then you can remove & replace the stem.

The O ring will hold the stem in so it wont fall out any longer."

PV, I never said I had a refurb. Bought new m1d just had to trade it in got my new one today and was already noticing scratches after the first few bowls. I only used my shorty pvhes on this model. Just wondering as a general consensus if anyone is having the same issue I love your stems and realize there is gonna be wear and tear. I believe my probs are now over. My battery lasts alot longer. Twice from before, heats the same if not hotter than my 107. Been brownin bowla ob 4, with some nice mango, still moist in cure. Vaped like a charm. Actually gonna be ordering some more when you get them in stock. I actually recieved a bad shorty which you kindly replaced,Ty, and your rep actually to use it as it was cut uneven that it would work better, but I couldnt with it being that jagged. The new one is cool. My full size pvhes actually cracked from it fitting so tightly in the cap, formef a stress fracture that broke. I am having bad luck.lol. you guys didn't want to replace that even though it had been used only twice. Once with the cap one without. Any chance you can help me out. But seriously, are scratches in heneral gonna happen to this bowl. Whatever stems are used. I think I have to get out of my imperfect thinking lol. Vaped

EDIT: Turbo Model should produce even better airflow?

So apparently the micro-dab is now released and has been shipped to amazon. The creator claims it can be used with herbs and kief also.
