Ok, so I ran the same warmup experiment measuring the exterior of the Cloud's temperature during a session that I ran last night. For this session the target temp was set (and left) at 9:00.

So adjusting for ambient, your shell temps are running ~10-15F higher than mine. I have no idea why. But fifteen degrees at this temp level can be a meaningful difference to the touch.

I think it's the firmware tweak, OBG. I'm going to experiment with 3:00 and max temp today. Theoretically, the max temp should be the same for all units, while everything below that is subject to the algorithm used in the software. Could you test your unit on max temp to compare?

All that work trying to get a pro photo, could be spoiled by an oversight like that. Or maybe I am just too picky? :lol: I used to work in a photo lab, and just have an eye for that kind of thing. Should have become an editor or something, it's even worse with continuity in movies! :D Better they see it now...

I saw that and just assumed, based on the quality of the pic and his skill in setting it up (that's a challenging photo to take) that he'd see it and take care of it.

By way of topic, how the hell does someone with 1736 posts get 1172 likes? Do you give away free Clouds?

There are other variables that could account for the difference in our readings, but I hesitate to speculate as thermal is outside my disciplines. A variation of +/-10-15F internally doesn't concern me, and could certainly be within an operating range. Externally, a temp approaching 140F won't be tolerable to touch for many/most people. (Maybe the explanation is simply that, if one's unit gets that hot, then the "HOT" atop the body also applies to the upper shield?)

... Readings (in each pair the first number is the 15 minute, second is the 1+ hour):

Bottom casing, right = ~112-121 (@noon = ~105-115)
Bottom casing, left = ~115-123
Top Casing, right = ~118-125 (@noon = ~110-120)
Top casing, left = ~123-128

Can you explain exactly where you took these measurements? I will replicate the max temp experiment targeting the mid section (just below the logo on the front), but I'd like to target the exact area you used for an apples to apples comparison. For the "top casing, left/right" were you taking readings from each side of the unit around the screws? If so, did you measure above or below (or between) the screws? I purposely hadn't taken measurements from the side as I wanted to test temperature as far from the metal screws as possible.

Yes, on both sides of the shield within ~1" above and below the screws, IIRC in the center. The screws were ~2 degrees hotter. I took a previous set of measurements too, fwiw:

Given variables, I think +/-10F in readings probably isn't particularly meaningful. By the way, I used a RayTek which I'm sure is calibrated correctly.

Yea sorry about the hair. It is either a hair, or a really hard crease in my backdrop. I swear, I spend an hour steam ironing the backdrop every time I want to use it. I love photographing glass though. It is such a challenge.

I updated the photograph to fix the hair... but it broke the images above. I asked a moderator if they could fix it for me. Sorry about that, I did not know that replacing a photograph in flicker would break the generated links. Live and learn.

I just tested exterior temperatures with the dial cranked up all the way to max (about 5:00).

I decided to include the side of the unit in order to compare with OBG's results. The side mirros the "middle" (of the front side - below the logo) of my previous tests, so I feel comfortable using this middle reading to use when comparing different target temps (see second chart).

Ambient temp 78°F
Time to green LED: 48:39
Auto shutoff at 57:39

In the chart below, I have compared the middle section of the Cloud with three different target temperatures; 9:00, Noon and Max. Notice how the Noon and Max results are very similar and within the ambient temperature diferences between tests.

1. First off, Troi is doing much better and appreciates all the support that he has received.

When this new methodology has been approved, this will allow us to quickly move through all of our pre-orders. I know this will be a huge sigh of relief for us and our anxious customers.

3. Custom glass - we will be putting together a new work flow on our website where you can make requests for custom glass.

One thing that we want to re-iterate is that the HydraTube technology has been patented by VapeXhale. This covers any water tool that has an intake at the bottom and is diffused through a water chamber. Anyone who is making water tools that have these properties are infringing on our intellectual property.

We are not interested in preventing any glass blowers from earning a profit making designs that will work with the Cloud, we are merely interested in protecting our IP. We encourage any and all glassblowers that want to make HydraTubes to contact and work with us. We are very easy to work with, we promise :)

I'm no fan of intellectual property but we all gotta get paid. Can you tell me if VXL was really the first to come up with the idea of a bottom-intake water chamber, or if you guys were just the first ones smart enough to patent the idea? Does it matter if the water tool is designed to be used with the Cloud, or with, say, a log vape? Thanks!

Isn't this the kind of crap that got everyone hating Toro...I guess you VXL are stealing the "Circ" from JP.

The pieces I showed on here were made for me by my design which included long arms to solve one of your issues (backsplash) and were and are not intended for sale. The artist I asked to make this had never previously heard of the VXC.

I am pretty sure the water pieces for the V-tower are also bottom intake....I would go after them, they are actually making money off your IP.

good point- Clear Dome was making such things for the PD ages ago, so it would seem that the only major difference is interfacing with the vape through a GonG joint rather than the actual stem? Is that patentable? And of course Ricks making bubblers for the AZ, but that' a more recent affair. There's also stuff for the V-tower on ALT that's very like a Hydratube.

Personally I think it kinda sucks and is a disappointing move from a grassroots company if they clamp down on this. Accepting that VX perhaps were one of the first companies to identify this method, I think it was inevitable that this kind of waterpipe design was also coming about elsewhere in the vaporizer market. This kind of in line diffusion isn't a stroke of genius- it's obvious for vaporizers. To even try and restrict its use is not a vaporist friendly move IMHO as so many models of vape can use this design.

WarTyler...it will only be a problem if they don't act like they said they would. Patents are a bitch to enforce, and VXL says they will be easy to work with. Shit, it might even be easier for people this way as they can relay important specs, etc. to potential glassblowers for you.

Also, I'm not sure that inevitability comes into play in the patent process, but I don't know. I do know that it isn't obvious to all vaporists, as I have dialogued with one manufacturer who thought it was crazy to put water above an electrically heated device. Even as I was telling him it is the best vapor I've ever had!

I know a bit about IP so can put in a little bit of info, FWIW.

One of the first things the patent office looks for is NOVELTY. They try to scan the "prior art", which means they scan the industry and look for other work that resembles the patent application. If they find your invention from someone else, they will deny your application.

The FIRST TO INVENT is the true inventor. This may not necessarily be the FIRST TO PATENT. This is important. While a patent is presumed valid by the courts, sometimes they are overturned because examiners aren't perfect and may miss prior art. If someone else came up with your idea first, your patent can be invalidated.

The patent office also looks for a lack of obviousness. Simple modifications to an existing invention, which fail to create a novel improvement, or create improvements that would be obvious to others in the field, should not be sufficient for a new patent.

It takes a whole lot of time, energy, and money to develop new IP. On top of it, these guys have built their own manufacturing plant around their invention so it's USA made. I'm still on the waiting list myself, but it seems everyone loves the Cloud. I think we should all support any valid IP they have developed in the process...

... and may they return a big profit for their efforts, the American way.
