lol, no way do they update firmware via wifi. never. must be direct connected.

I know there is a large difference between Bob's unit and ZC's unit. I can run bob's at 3 o'clock all day with herb, you go past 2 with ZC's it combusts the herb. boy was that a horrible experience... I think the max value is similar though so its non linear like you say.

Its no big deal for me unless I swap units back and forth. Just learn where to put it and bingo. nothing is that touchy...
You could do a wireless firmware update ... you just have to write it in such a fashion that it first uploads the entire firmware then the device updates itself ... just sayin'

Have had a nice time with the new EVO unit and my OG hydracirc. Do not let the discussion of a "tighter draw" adhere your decisions on spending your hard earned money on this incredible device. i heard about The Cloud and immediately pre-ordered in April 2011. Got my OG Cloud "ticker" in 2012 and I have been using it for well over a year now before it went kaput becuz i had the habit of twisting the HT off the top. I AM NOT DOING that now. But it did last for well over a year and a half. I always wondered about a bong attached to a vaporizer. We did a ghetto version of this with surgical tube, my tommy chong, and the EQ. beautifully inefficient.

The OG ticker feels like the OG Iron Man armor. The new EVO is like the MK49. No ticking sounds (which I kinda miss cuz then I knew it was on when it was doing that lol. stoner.). It is absolutely light as all hell. I kinda miss the weight of the OG. but for ppl suffering from arthritis, this is a welcomed change. Im from the old school so I like things heavy. sturdy. shit MEN build. but I am getting used to the lightweight nature of it.

My EVO has not turned off yet as per the 60min timer. and I can tell u its HOT without bands. But the OGs were like that too. Bands do the trick. But Ive just had the habit of holding from the bottom base. Cupping it. Its just more stable that way.

Ive had a halfway full ELB. VERY DRY herb. grinded some couple hours ago and its been left air drying on my desk. no combustion at 11 o clock. tasty til the last hit. milky for about 4 hits. pulled hard. pulled slow. I'm totally vaked. Fanatic tube is in another box on its way still. Can't wait.

Its efficiently good. Didn't think it could top the ticker. But it did. OG ticker. I remember when i got that thing. First full bowl took me back to HS days. Room spinning. Had to lay down and rest lol. But as the tolerance began to settle in. That's when it gets good. You really feel like your getting your money's worth from the buds. Every last drop of usable "get highs".

I got the fanatic because I had no doubt SM and the crew would improve upon an already solid prototype. I didn't mind the 1k, because with all the delays and all the minor quips about stuff, this machine is for real. There is absolutely nothing on the market that competes with the engineering in this thing. Im not really a concentrates man, so I cant comment on that, but when i do get some hash i will def try it out.

I'm not a big poster on these boards. Huge lurker. But I feel the need to back up the VXL crew. SM and the VXL crew, I know they are working hard to make sure this experience will be as easy and pain free as possible but you have to be patient with a new company. When I heard units were getting out before the fanatics, I wasn't mad at all. I was happy. I wanted to hear other rookies tell me about their EVO experience. SM went from a poster on these boards looking for a good vape...to using that huge database of posts on the Cloud thread...to building the Cloud...and now to the EVO. They have definitely come a long way. I know for a fact that big things are to come (i don't really know that) but i do at the same time. I believe in what these guys have built. I'm sure you will to. Trust the millions of posts on the Cloud thread. It works. Its efficient. Its improved.

If the unit has timed-out then the clock is reset by toggling the switch. And I'm saying that when you switch it on again, dial it to 3 and then dial back when green. Verify this works. If it does, your unit may need a firmware tweak. Send SM a PM about it and mention I suggested you do. Re the wobble, where the 2 enclosure seams meet at the base on each side, are the front/back pieces precisely aligned and even? This will tell us whether the problem is with the assembly or with the mold.

EDIT: And, no, I don't leave my unit on after a session. It heats up so quickly that I don't find that necessary at all.

So I tested out what you asked me to do and didnt have the best results. I turned my unit off since last use (two days ago) and today I turned it back on, waited a minute, didnt warm up at all, light was red. I turned it to max, and it turned green, turn it to minimum setting and it the light turned off, turned it back up and the light just stayed green never heated up. I turned the unit off and then back on it flashed green and started to do its thing. Im definitely going to have to send my unit in, just dont want to give it up yet :(

The wobble is from the mold Im pretty sure, my unit looks to be aligned pretty good. Its just so such a slight wobble, just enough for me to notice though :D

Looks like EVO is ready for me to fill the lungs. Happy vaping!

lol, no way do they update firmware via wifi. never. must be direct connected.

I agree you don't want to update FW over wifi. But if they have a small bit of onboard storage they could download the FW update over wifi, and write it 100% from local code. Not really all that relevant, but firmware UPDATES via wifi are way too risky on live code updates, but if it was downloaded then verified with the MD5 then they could flash locally after downloading the update on wifi.

If I understand you correctly, you turned the unit on and initialized the unit at a (presumably) lower setting, waited a minute, then turned it to max. My suggestion was to set it to max first and then turn it on, i.e., the unit initializes set at max. When you subsequently turned the unit off and then back on, you did so set at max so it initialized at that level and worked; this was what I was suggesting.

If this is correct, your unit has the same quirk that mine does. Requires a firmware tweak. As I suggested before, send SM a PM describing the problem and mention that it appears that the behavior is the same as my unit (SM and I have discussed this already and there is a game plan for it).

I think this is essentially what JCat was suggesting, too. I agree. The question is whether you put the storage and updating code inside the EVO or use an app on another device that would manage the update via a wired connection such as USB. The issue with putting it on the EVO is that you need some form of interface on it to control and validate the download and the update. That's why I suggested using another device, e.g., the user's PC, etc. There is more flexibility and functionality available with this approach.

Yes that is correct, I first turned it on at 12:30 and it didnt heat, so I moved it to max temp, still didnt heat but the light turned green. Never heated up so I turned it off and then back on and it started heating.

Ill report my testings back on what you are saying next time I turn it on. Ill send him a PM either way. Thanks oldiebutgoodie

So the more and more I get used to the EVO the more and more it I believe that had this been day 1 first time around and this would actually be the cloud.

This last week alone I've used more flower than oil for the first time in a long while. For me I've really taken a liking to mixing concentrates and flowers in combination with the EVO. The taste as always with my original cloud blows my mind and the extraction (if used properly) is rivaled by no one.

Now, with that said I have noticed a few performance variations in comparison to the original.

I believe with newly designed bamboo it holds it's core temperature more and tends to run a bit warm. Not a bad thing but if I'm going to walk a way for a moment it would be best to remove the ELB to prevent pre-mature evaculation.

The other thing is it's timing. I get a green light anywhere from 2.06 to 2.17 but I get nothing but wispy vapor until the 6 minute mark.

My house is usually between 72° and 75° and I start at 12.

Anyone else having similar results?

I really really want to love this thing.... and I do don't get me wrong. I just find that the experience is not as consistent as it was with the OG Cloud. For instance, although I can "milk the bubbler" so to speak, I find that I get an uneven ABV. I find that I have to shake or stir to get a complete extraction. It seems like the heat is concentrated right in the middle of the ELB and the outsides don't really get touched. That gets me to thinking....is the reduced turbulence because of the restricted draw causing this? On my OG ticker I get perfect coffee brown even ABV every time. Not so with the EVO. And I am still combusting here and there from 12 on up.

I agree, always ways around the issue. A scratch pad, check sum and when complete do the reload/reboot. Just cost extra hardware.

We in the industry try to take the cheap safe and easy roads....

Sounds about right mvapes although the cold start seems to go quicker for me . . . sometimes I leave mine on with the dial turned all the way down to use as a hand warmer, then turn up to 1:30-2 to use. Cuts down on the wait time, however, its during this time that you will get some of the tastiest hits  so experimenting is fun even from a cold start, sometimes I think it will be a light vapor hit and then the EVO surprises me. Nice to see you back . . . :)

Your EVO is performing identically to mine. From what I can gather the cause is the bamboo being slightly too restrictive. My symptoms are unevenly vaped bowls, depending on how full (identical load size at any temp vapes fully and evenly with no stir in my OG) and the restriction of the draw keeps my waterpieces from being used to their full potential. With my OG, I could stack bubbles to the top of my GBD FC showerhead bubbler, and my HydraCirc perc fired fully and freely...this is not the case with my EVO at all. Even using the dry mouthpiece, the restriction is un-desirably strong. With one waterpiece, the restriction makes me feel like I'm about to drool

All of that being said, I am still mainly using the EVO vs the OG, as it heats up quicker, and is cooler to the touch by far, on the lower half of the unit. Also, the brighter LEDs, removable cord and lightweight build make for more convenience. Still, I find myself unable to shelf the OG, as the EVO just doesn't satisfy in the ease of use department when it comes to draw restriction. I love love love the thing, don't get me wrong, but I can't really seem to enjoy the draw speed of the EVO, or tolerate it when I am trying to medicate quickly.

That being said, I messaged SM back when I came to the conclusion that it was too restrictive for me, and potentially too restrictive in general. I didn't want to come across like I was saying it was defective or anything, but I do seriously believe it is out of spec. I feel these things should be brought to their attention so they can focus on preventing the issue. I requested to send my unit in once they have caught up on IGG orders/pre-orders, and are stable, etc. for "repair," stating that I would like the bamboo to be replaced with one that is less restrictive that what is currently installed; if possible, as close to the OG as possible in terms of restriction.

So, I am sure for some or many users, this wouldn't be an issues. I know that the Cloud + is known to have a more restricted draw than the OG, and the EVO even more so, but I don't believe it should be as restricted as it is in my unit, or as others seem to be experiencing. Otherwise, I'm still loving this thing, and I will miss it when it goes away for it's little upgrade...but the OG will keep me more than content in the meantime...as it's doing right now hahahah
