Okay guys, so I received a package the other day.
Two Tubos... one for me and one for a friend. Shipping was super fast, like 3-4 weekdays to CA, priority untracked.
First of all, I have to thank
@funkyjunky for everything included in the box, I got everything I needed to have a great start with this new vape.
Coincidentally, my DDave cooler stem came the same day. And once again a big thanks to
@DDave for hooking me up with the cooler and plenty of screens!
I tried to wait until this weekend to try mine out because I wanted to make sure I had a good block of time but it was calling to me and I just couldn’t resist.
At first I planned on just taking a few draws to test it out and then I would put it away for this weekend... that’s not how it went.
The Tubo itself is smaller than I pictured but has a real heaviness to it. I like it. Battery door magnet is cool and clean. The whole look of the Tubo screams cool.
First, I tried out the bent stem with a rimmed basket screen on the end. I loaded it so the space between the two screens was about halfway filled, very loose (every now and then I pulled out the stem and gave it a shake for an easy stir). I turned my Tubo on and all settings appeared to be in order, only thing I had to change was flipping the display, which was fairly easy with the manual provided. I set the temp to a conservative 175 C out of fear of combustion.
To be honest, the first draw I took I forgot to even press the fire button smh. Next draw I remembered to hold fire button and got mostly flavor, not much visible vapor if any. Subsequent draws started producing more and more vapor. I experimented with different draws and found that low and slow got me the best results and real visible vapor. Throughout my first 10 or so draws I was bumping up the temperature trying to find the vapor sweet spot. I finally settled on around the 200-210 C range, which is right what it was set to out of the box.
Eventually, I decided to try out “cruise mode”. In my initial post before I received the Tubo, I indicated that cruise mode didn’t entice me much. That may have been naive on my part. Cruise was very enjoyable, wasn’t as much technique in getting the right draw speed/heat combo. I did find myself wondering how much time was left on the cruise and thinking any moment it’s going to drop out of it and I won’t notice. Which would have been fine because I exited cruise before the timer ever elapsed. I think FJ once explained how to get a timer on the screen for cruise? Not sure.
The bent stem was a good experience, only gripe was vapor was a little hot, but not too bad. I then decided to switch to the DDave cooler stem... remember when this was only supposed to be a quick test? By this time I was feeling like a kid with a new favorite toy, very satisfied.
For some reason, the second rimmed basket screen that was in the box didn’t seem to fit in either the bent stem or the cooler stem, it was slightly too small so would fall right out. It did fit snugly into the short stem however. I can just use the original rimmed screen back and forth until I find a local source for these rimmed baskets. No big deal.
The DDave cooler was a treat. Slightly cooled down the vapor but the best part of it for me was what it does to the the draw resistance, I know a lot of people like zero draw resistance and that’s what you get with the bent stem and short stem, but personally, I like draw resistance, especially with convection. Makes me feel like the hot air is really swirling around through my buds. And the Cooler definitely added draw resistance. It felt like hitting a glass piece. I couldn’t finagle a rimless basket screen to fit perfectly without there being tiny slivers of space around the outside for particulates to get through, I may be more picky than others about this so I ended up shoving a screen all the way to the end and then inserting another rimless basket screen as far as it would go on top of the first screen so I had double screen protection from getting any material through the stem. I then loaded the same amount of herb as before and capped it with the rimmed basket screen. This worked great.
The Tubo really stretches my herb too. I probably took 20 or more draws and kept getting paranoid and checking the ABV but it was always a nice even light brown. Below is a picture of my ABV. The pile on the right is a random sample from my ABV stash from the Volcano, the smaller pile on the left is my Tubo ABV after a good 20+ draws (I do take shorter draws than most). ABV is pretty much even, Tubo pile actually looked more green to me.
I was blessed with never developing a tolerance so I don’t need a ton of sessions in a day, so the battery drain and subsequent re-charging isn’t too bad for me. It actually lasted longer than expected. All in all, I started my experience at 97% battery and by the time I did all of my “testing” the battery was at 51%. I’m sure if I cranked up the heat I might be able to get more efficiency per load out of the battery but I liked the experience I had with low temp/more draws.
Overall, great experience, very fun, and did the job! I’m very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone who is contemplating getting a Tubo.
