Hey received my Persei today.

Charged the batteries, threw them in the Persei..

Hit the power button to see if it powered and nothing from the battery? Not a good start.. :(

You sure they were charged all the way? The stock chargers go from solid red, to switching between red and green, to solid green. It take a while for them to get there too.

a quick useful way I do it without a photobucket is use
tinypic.com
browse and upload your photo you can resize it if you need
and copy and paste the "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" here into fuck combustion should work @DaNi_DuB

Well, my 7 days with the Iris V2 have come to an end.

Over 2.5 grams of top shelf nug-run oil were put though the Hercules with this attachment accompanying the ride. Sadly, my review period coincided with a 5 day stay from the in-laws as well as my daughter's birthday, so most of my testing was "on the go". I dont see this as a bad thing however, since the Persei is, by design, a portable unit and should be used as such. Also, as you may recall from @Sleepin in CA's review, this is still a "prototype". As such, I am not here to review its build quality or aesthetics but rather to run the unit through its paces to see what comes loose.

To start off, I used the Iris in conjunction with my SR71/74 combo. This includes the SR74 white 7.4v rod and one SR74 Ti coil, with the rest of the unit being from the SR71. With this combo, I was able to improve upon flavor, however this resulted in leaking at first. It took a few days of playing with technique, and toying with the voltage some but I finally got it to work without much leaking into the lower half of the heater. I eventually settled on 7.0v for maximum flavor, while retaining vapor production. With the shatter-glass that I was using, anything less resulted in weak performance and increased leaking into the lower chamber.

From there, I moved to the SR71 white rod and one SR74 Ti coil. This experience was much better IMO. There is much more headroom to play with power wise, and thus I found finding the proper power level to be easier. On top of that, I quickly determined that this is a much better way of preventing burnt oil than using the SR74 rod.

Finally, I ended up using a pure SR71 configuration with a 30% SS coil. This probably worked the best out of all 3 configurations. The SS coil doesn't have that tendency to slide up the heating chamber, which makes taking larger hits much easier (and without fear of unseating the coil). In fact, when I dialed the power down to about 6.6-6.8v I was able to ride the button as long as I wanted while taking as big a hit as I wanted. This was easily the most devastating combination of the 3 for that reason alone. At the same time, though, flavor was the least pronounced. I would have to assume this has to do more with the coil material than anything else though.

Now, in all 3 cases I was able to coax more flavor, battery life and less leaking (for the most part) out of my Persei/Hercules combo than with a standard top. This in and of itself is worth the price of admission, however the added bonus of never having to bust out my DMM to check resistance, as well as never having to guess on my remaining battery life are the nail in the coffin for me. That, combined with the performance advantage makes this a must buy for any serious Hercules owner.

Now all G has to do is address the build/cosmetic issues and we have a winner.

@THC SCIENTIFIC The only "problems" I found were:

  • Touchy battery contact (resolved by raising the battery perch/spring past suggested levels)
  • Hit or miss with quick button presses registering to turn the unit on/off
...and really that's it except for a few build quality issues, however as I said I think that's neither here nor there since its just a beta unit. Of course if you'd like me to pick those aspects apart, just let me know.

Thanks for the v2 Iris review! Your experience seems to parallel to my own SR-71+v1 Iris experience pretty well. I agree with you that the Iris is a must have for serious Hercules users. I have a couple of questions for you tho.

You mention that with the SR-74 white rod you wound up vaping at 7.0v. According to my calculations that is about 21.3 watts. This is just a little more power than a black rod on a freshly charge battery (20 watts at 4 volts). I'm a bit surprised that this power level was sufficient for you. Compare this to your voltage level with the SR-71 white rod which at 6.7v puts out about 30 watts. I would have expected you to have pushed the SR-74 white rod all the way up to 7.4v (the Iris max).

I wanted to ask you if you remember the Iris resistence reading for each of your heating rods? My calculations above assumed the SR-71 white rod was 1.5 ohms and the SR-74 white rod was 2.3 ohms.

Also did you note the power in watts that the Iris displayed for these configurations?

It seems that you, I and @Darb all gravitated to the 30 watt level with the Iris and SR-71 white rod. I suspect that when Irises are more common that this will wind up as the most popular heat level for an SR-71 Hercules. This is also close to the 28w power level that one gets with an SR-74 on an unregulated, freshly charged set of batteries.

I'm intrigued by your comment that the Ti coil seemed to improve flavor. I've only used SS coils so far. I'll give the Ti coil a tryout the next time I clean out my Herc.

Oh, one final question. I noticed the v2 Iris proto had a battery level display. Did you find this useful at all? Was it accurate enough to see when the battery level dropped to the point that the Iris would drop out of regulation?

Thanks again!

you have to explain more what type of cartridge are you using
any attachments
any photos so we can see how you have it set up
also how did you load your concentrate how much we need more info to help hope we can that's a bummer

Charged the batteries for about 4-5 hours right when I got them. Charger showed solid green when I took them off..

I just put them back on the charger and its now green flashing red every 2 seconds

I tried just powering the Persei with and without a cartridge attached and didnt make a difference

  • I should state that with the SR74 rod, I found it best to start at full 7.4v then to dial the voltage down to an indicated 7.0 after things warmed up.
  • cold resistance read at 2.2 ohm. This would get into the 2.5-2.6 range when warm.
  • I did t utilize the watt readout function. While I played with it, I mainly stuck to using the voltage readout. This was due to my unfamiliarity with these measurements.
  • Keep in mind my SS coil is much older than my Ti coil. This may effect flavor as well? Id need a new SS coil to really compare. I dislike the Ti coils tendency to slide up tho.
  • battery readout seemed to function well enough. Not sure how to determine if proper regulation is occurring sadly. I did find that performance drop was noticeable after the batteries hit ~50-60% indication.
@caporoot did you make sure the battery adjustment plate is properly set? Top of the battery should be barely sticking out past the top of the tube with the head unit removed.

ok so make sure you have the height of the batteries adjusted correctly
with the bottom black cap off take the metal tool and thread the batteries up alittle
I usually set my batteries to stick out of the persei a tiny bit
it seems like you have charged batteries but you are not getting a power contact @caporoot

also not to insult your intelligence but just double check your batteries are in the correct direction with what I call the nipple (+) facing up

Anyone else have to clean the ti KISS carts a lot? For me, I am talking about the metal air path, the middle long piece in between the mouth piece and the atomizer. Even when I put in a tiny amount of wax in it still splatters up onto the upper threaded part of this piece. Also, the atomizer/cartridge gets oil around the rim of it....
I am trying to get used to this cartridge and it keeps getting messy and in the threads after just a few packs.

any thoughts?

no mine stays very clean
my oil also never splatters just melts like honey
might have something to do with the type or consistancy concentrate your vaping

damn...I just load a small amount of wax right on top of the wire and heat it up...I don't inhale hard either. I'm using the omicron lite...

Thanks for the reply. I know the PITA of sliding coils. The last time I cleaned a Herc I cut a new SS coil for it and was so proud that I got such a clean cut. Well my reward for being so careful was that the SS coil started sliding up and the monster clouds turned into wisps. After 4 grams of wax through the Herc it now stays in place. Previously, I would always mangle the coil a bit when cutting and I would just jam it into place. Those coils would rarely slide up.

All the heating rods increase about 25% in resistance when hot. A good safety feature IMO. But I always compare and calculate using cold resistance levels just to compare apples to apples and to get an idea of worst case power and current levels.

The Iris is in regulation if the raw battery voltage is at least 0.1 volt above the set voltage.

Anyone want to trade a black sr71 rod for my (used twice) white sr74 rod? Lol

Mudd makes me want to give it another go. May just have to go buy a new black one.

=)
sleepin, i have a black sr71 rod w/ no sr71! although, i already have (2) 74/7.4v rod(s). anything else to trade?

Anyone else have any fixes that might work with powering the battery?

Very disappointing, was hoping to Persei/Herc SR74 today.. back to my Itaste VV and Gentleman Mega V2 :(
