Well, my 7 days with the Iris V2 have come to an end.
Over 2.5 grams of top shelf nug-run oil were put though the Hercules with this attachment accompanying the ride. Sadly, my review period coincided with a 5 day stay from the in-laws as well as my daughter's birthday, so most of my testing was "on the go". I dont see this as a bad thing however, since the Persei is, by design, a portable unit and should be used as such. Also, as you may recall from
@Sleepin in CA's review, this is still a "prototype". As such, I am not here to review its build quality or aesthetics but rather to run the unit through its paces to see what comes loose.
To start off, I used the Iris in conjunction with my SR71/74 combo. This includes the SR74 white 7.4v rod and one SR74 Ti coil, with the rest of the unit being from the SR71. With this combo, I was able to improve upon flavor, however this resulted in leaking at first. It took a few days of playing with technique, and toying with the voltage some but I finally got it to work without much leaking into the lower half of the heater. I eventually settled on 7.0v for maximum flavor, while retaining vapor production. With the shatter-glass that I was using, anything less resulted in weak performance and increased leaking into the lower chamber.
From there, I moved to the SR71 white rod and one SR74 Ti coil. This experience was much better IMO. There is much more headroom to play with power wise, and thus I found finding the proper power level to be easier. On top of that, I quickly determined that this is a much better way of preventing burnt oil than using the SR74 rod.
Finally, I ended up using a pure SR71 configuration with a 30% SS coil. This probably worked the best out of all 3 configurations. The SS coil doesn't have that tendency to slide up the heating chamber, which makes taking larger hits much easier (and without fear of unseating the coil). In fact, when I dialed the power down to about 6.6-6.8v I was able to ride the button as long as I wanted while taking as big a hit as I wanted. This was easily the most devastating combination of the 3 for that reason alone. At the same time, though, flavor was the least pronounced. I would have to assume this has to do more with the coil material than anything else though.
Now, in all 3 cases I was able to coax more flavor, battery life and less leaking (for the most part) out of my Persei/Hercules combo than with a standard top. This in and of itself is worth the price of admission, however the added bonus of never having to bust out my DMM to check resistance, as well as never having to guess on my remaining battery life are the nail in the coffin for me. That, combined with the performance advantage makes this a must buy for any serious Hercules owner.
Now all G has to do is address the build/cosmetic issues and we have a winner.
@THC SCIENTIFIC The only "problems" I found were:
- Touchy battery contact (resolved by raising the battery perch/spring past suggested levels)
- Hit or miss with quick button presses registering to turn the unit on/off
...and really that's it except for a few build quality issues, however as I said I think that's neither here nor there since its just a beta unit. Of course if you'd like me to pick those aspects apart, just let me know.
