As to the preferred "hand tearing" of herb, there are Microplane parsley choppers that use a scissors mechanism, but don't the aluminum post grinders just grab and tear it anyway?

I have tried a coaser grind and I do not find it any better than a fine grind. In fact a finer grind gives me more even browning. I just have to be more careful about draw speed, and I have to expect some additional clean up.

But yes, the aluminum grinders basically grab and tear (or cut?). More turns do result in a finder grind though.

The firefly survived being in a hit and run car accident yesterday. I was trading the car in TODAY, until some bitch in a mercedes tboned me and ran. Firefly was on the seat and went flying and is 100% undamaged, even cosmetically. Meanwhile my car is as close totaled as you can get...you know without actually being totaled :/

Sorry to hear that!

I was mortified when my FF slid out of the microfiber bag and onto my tile floor, from about waist height. It was a pretty big drop, and was followed by about a three foot slide across the tile floor, just for extra flair (the Russian judge gave it a disappointing 8.67). :)

I am still looking for damage. I finally saw some scratches on the chrome border of the lid, but it took me a little while to find them. Otherwise no visible damage and no affect on functionality.

Not really all that important, but I just tossed battery #3 into the external charger. I haven't used it in a couple weeks and was concerned about drainage.

The charger was solid blue in a couple of minutes.

The battery has NOT been subjected to any significantly cold temps though.

Hi EveryDayAmnesiac. I'm interested in purchasing a Firely & noticed you have both. I'm in the process of having my Ascent sent back for warranty repair.

What's your review of having both the FF & Ascent? Preferences, pros/cons. I appreciate your input.

I made a very long rambling post a little while back talking about just that. Some of it is helpful.

http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-firefly-vaporizer.11365/page-46#post-527330

I should add more to that though, at some point.

As it stands now, it's FF all day long. Then the Ascent time starts about 9:00 when I get home and use up all my ABV (can't afford to let any go to waste). I don't feel the need or desire to use the Ascent any more than that.

The Ascent is a nice little vape though, and it fits an important niche for me - outside vaping, through water easily with a GonG connection, at high temps, with no threat of combustion. I'm on my third one though. And the chamber seems permanently stained / smelly.

Having both rounds out my needs nicely, for the time being.

With a 2s 7.4v battery I would assume it is a LiPo battery. I have been working with these cells in other applications for 10 years- primarily powering aircraft and unmanned air vehicles and camera gimbals/systems.

I don't know much about batteries, and only really basic information about the distinction between Li-ion and Li-poly (perhaps you can help me out here), but I think it was in the podcast with the designers of the device (posted somewhere in this thread) that they said they went with a Li-ion instead of LiPo because they couldn't get the power out of a LiPo battery fast enough. My back of the envelope calculation (≈600 seconds running time before mine died, and the battery holds ≈20,000 joules) was that the FF draws an average of 33.3 watts, and they said in the podcast that it can spike up to 50 as needed. Do you know if it's possible to get that kind of power out of a LiPo? I have no idea, and I'm quite curious about this.

Hi, this is my first post here. I have been following this thread for a while after i just recently discovered the world of vaping. So i finally decided to make an comment here.

Got my FF a week ago and overall i think its a good device. Being my first vape ever its hard to compare to any other products out there but im very satisfied.

So my first week of vaping (also smoke still time to time) i have been coughing alooooooot.. To a point where its unconfortable. Being a smoker for 6 years im not getting the fully "medicated" state as i would with a Joint, maybe because i cant take in so much vape gas? I guess im getting used to the vapor soon.... Any new or experienced vapers got the cough problem?

Either way i can definately see vapor, but since i cannot take big draws i dont see HUGE vapor clouds. I can easily have 10-12 draws (mixing the herb after 6) from each bowl with the last draws still having a liiiiittle taste left. It gives me perfect 80% dark brown leftovers.

I have noticed that drawing very slowly gives a good overall usage of the herb since air passes thru slowly. I tend to draw faster when releasing the button and slower while holding it.
As some one mensioned earlier after first holding the button around 10 sec then relasing, if the vapor amount is not satisfiying you can easily just press the button 2-4 more sec to get even more vapor. I use that method to the the last 3-4 draws from my bowl.

I am using a 2cm diameter screen that is placed on the ceramic glass covering it almost completely. With the lid on top, holding the screen preseed to the ceramic bowl, i have 0 stuff flying in the path and i get very clean top lid after usage. My question is, do you think the contact between the stainless screen and the ceramic bowl is good or bad? More heat transfered to the lid?!
(As a note after suing this in a week it has never combusted, and for the taste i have not felt any differances tbh)

Regarding batteries i thought i would share some useful info. The ones used in the FF are Li-ion, and NOT Li-po, even tho they are in the same family Li-ion does not react as Li-po batteries when disscharged completely (staring to burn). Here is a good explanation i found using the statistics of usage from the battery university.

"There is a lot of confusion surrounding this issue, mostly because lithium-ion batteries are different from older, nickel-based batteries (which suffered from a nasty memory effect not present in lithium-ion batteries). You're right, though—charging them incorrectly can decrease their lifespan. Most lithium batteries should last you a few years, but improper care can decrease that lifespan, meaning that your battery will be unable to hold a charge—or unable to hold as big a charge as it used to—quicker. So, to clear things up, here's how to actually extend your battery's health as much as possible.

  • ku-medium.jpg
    SEXPAND
  • Perform shallow discharges. Instead of discharging to 0% all the time, lithium-ion batteries do best when you discharge them for a little bit, then charge them for a little bit. The table at the right, from Battery University, shows that discharges to 50% are better for your battery's long-term life than, say, small discharges to 90% or large discharges to 0% (since the 50% discharges provide the best number of cycles-to-usage ratio).
  • Don't leave it fully charged. Similarly, lithium-ion batteries don't need to be charged all the way to 100%. In fact, they'd prefer not to be—so the 40%-80% rule you heard is a good guideline. When possible, keep it in that range to prolong its life as long as you can. And, if you do charge it to 100%, don't leave it plugged in. This is something most of us do, but it's another thing that will degrade your battery's health. If you need to charge it overnight, use something like the Belkin Conserve Socket to stop it from charging after it's full.
  • Fully discharge it once a month. This may seem contradictory, but hear us out. While lithium-ion batteries shouldn't be discharged regularly, most modern batteries are what's known as "smart batteries", which means that they can tell you how long you have until your battery dies (e.g. "2 hours, 15 minutes remaining"). This feature can get miscalibrated after a lot of shallow discharges. So, manufacturers recommend fully discharging your battery once a month to make sure this stays accurate.

I have pretty sensitive lungs so my experience is probably not the norm, but the FF makes me cough more than most other vaporizers. For others it may not be a problem, but if you're lungs suck like mine do, it is something to be aware of.

Great Scott!
Weird I find the convection heating FAR less irritating than conduction vapes. When I use my pax for 2-3 days in a row my throat starts to feel really raw and I just feel kinda scratchy and harsh. I don't like conduction without water filtration, but to be honest I'm trying to eliminate it completely. The firefly has made that possible with ease for me.

Welcome to the world of vaping, and FC...and you've certainly chosen a high end, high quality device to start your journey. (My first vape five years ago was a Vapor Bros, and I'm lucky to have persevered.)

If you are living in one of the many places that is having a brutal winter, you may be having dryness issues, and I personally find it exacerbates coughing, though the FF delivers very smooth vapor, in my experience. As for your other observations, vaping is a complex little dance that varies from device to device, person to person, strain to strain...it will take you a little while to adjust and find your rhythm and learn to love the effects. It's not smoking....smoking is easy. Vaping is complex, personal, highly variable, occasionally elusive, sometimes temperamental, always seductive, frequently euphoric...the challenge is part of the fun.

Thank you very much for your feedbacks :)

Regarding the lungs being bad.. Scary thought im glad i relized to even start vaping. Its not common AT ALL in europe.

Mitchgo61 funny way of describing it, its perfectly logical what your saying i agree with ur statements.
Im from Sweden so regarding the cold weather, much possible, it has been a harch winter.

Ill keep testing different things and post updates.

The only thing that bugs me at the moment is the bottom screen on the heating element surface (under the glass bowl), must find a way to somehow keep the material going under the glass bowl, what do you guys think if i slightly bend one of the included screens on its corners and fit it in bowl? So it overlaps the gaps under the bowl.. would it change the heating effect you think?

Thanks for clarifying on the batt chemistry RedVape, great info!
... it makes all I said about lipo moot with regards to the FF:doh:

Oh yea, Lipo power is plenty capable of putting out watts (and pretty fun when failing too!). On my remote aircraft, I have really gone to the extreme on more than one occasion. I am currently using 10s 5000mAh LiPo in a 20 pound airplane; that pushes over 85 amps and well over 3,000 watts. We get all our batteries CHEAP from Hobbyking.com, but they would need modification to power the FF.

Yes Li-po's are for those demanding rc toys to get as much amps as pssible, i actually also fly my RC copter on those batteries :D they are however not big ones as with ur 10 cell 5000 mAh :p mine is the 2S 200 mah

I have two designs that use LiFePo batteries: the FlashVAPE in conduction mode, and the Volta. That in no way contradicts the FF designers because their heater undoubtedly has different demands than the FV and Volta. I just wanted to point out that the chemistry isn't the limitation.

Greetings VC,

I popped my vaping cherry with the ff two days ago after decades of smoking, and have no plans of ever smoking again. I love the taste of vapor which is hard to describe, but it goes well with my coffee in the morning. Secondly, I found out vaping brings out the true colors of a strain. The first day I used the ff I had some bud that I was smoking out of a knock off G5 that was medicating me pretty good, but when I vaped it with the ff, it's effect shorten which caused me to vape more. So the next day I picked up some Girl Scout Cookies and the results were fantastic. The FF performed expected as well as the meds, so I'm a very happy camper right now.:)

Yeah I'm thinking my fondness of convection vapes is what allows me to get so much use out of a battery. I do have a 2nd battery on the way, but I don't even need the external charger. I'll grab one used some day maybe, but I'm so happy as is. If there was an official concentrate bowl, or a good option for concentrates this vape would be my everything lol.

I do have to say that I am greatly enjoying using the firefly and hand breaking my nugs. Everything else is grind fine etc. I love my TI space case, but I also love not needing to take anything with me, just a jyarz with buds and a firefly in its pouch. Simple.

My hat is off to the customer service behind the FF. I sent my unit back to be repaired due to MY clumsiness/dropping the little fella. Within 4 days, a brand new FF arrived at my home. No charge!
Way to go FF!!!!! Never expected you folks to cover the results of my butterfingers. I wish the other
companies (except W9 of course) were half as likely to be so cool! Kapooya!
