I go where the thrills are
Hey @mitchgo61, quick question here. Now after thoroughly getting used to the prototype FF2, do you ever find yourself having the desire to go use one of your original Firefly's from time to time? Or has the prototype replaced them almost completely?
I have only used my FF1 once since getting the FF2 prototype....and it was to do a kind of a/b test between the two. In which the 1 gets trounced by the 2 for usability etc. (One thing that the 1 has over the 2...that heft that it has is missing in the 2. The 2 is much much lighter and smaller and more of a "portable" but there's a solid vibe you get from the 1 that 2 doesn't have. 1 feels like a classic car or something....2 is just missing that kind of vibe. It has nothing to do with utility, and it's an elusive, almost emotional thing, but when you hold them side by side you notice it.)
@mitchgo61 Any word on the bowl's capacity? If you have a scale it would be great if you could weigh a fully packed bowl.
Yeah it's basically the same size as the 1 (maybe not exact but functionally the same). Seems to hold about .15 g's when you pack densely...you can maybe cram .18 g's in there.
It's interesting they claim it's got an all glass air path. Does that mean the final production units will feature a glass mouthpiece instead of the plastic MP on the beta unit mitchgo61's using?
Edit: Just read it again and they don't claim all glass, just a glass air path. so I suppose the plastic mouthpiece may be on the final design.
AFAIK the production mouthpiece is still plastic, but it's not the one on the prototype I have so I haven't seen it. I understand it seats more securely...the one I have clicks in correctly most of the time but is a little temperamental. As for the "all glass" path...that seems not quite accurate to me. Since the steel plate forms the bottom of the air path, I would describe the air path as "glass and stainless steel" to be completely precise.
So I've spent the past few days seeing how well I can use the 2 just set on Med/High (to simulate "not being able to change heat settings" scenario since it requires an app). The good news is that as I suspected the Med/High setting basically replicates the full temp spectrum of FF1. I am able to get nearly-full extraction from Med/High, actually a bit more than FF1 (leading me to believe the high end of Med/High exceeds the stated 400F upper end of FF1). When I move it up to High I'm not getting a lot more extraction...like one or two more small hits.
So....you can get a full FF2 experience on Med/High, or at least I'm able to on this prototype. It's not as ideal as local temp control, but it gives you a good idea of how effective your favorite temp setting can be.
(For those who've asked, I'm still having issues assessing battery life...this prototype has a weird, documented bug that sends a dead battery signal occasionally in the middle of the battery cycle, so it's preventing me from getting an accurate read. I still think I can get a good four bowls from one battery, or something like 100 hits...but I can't confirm that yet.)
