The portable vaporizer wars seems to be heating up pretty quick. I like that companies are spurring each other on to bring out better product. Great news for the consumer.

The performance gap between desktops and portables seems to be closing a bit, eh? I wonder if eventually, with advancing technologies, the portable will make desktops obsolete.

@lwien or what new tech could come to the desktop world to make the gap larger again... Either way super interesting to be able to watch! mine shipped Saturday but no tracking. Hopefully they ship off the west coast. My mouth has been watering since I first saw this thread:drool:

I don't think there is any. I think the future of vaporizers will be portable units which function like a desktop when plugged in. Minivap is a good example. Battery tech is gonna be the biggest issue for a while. Being able to plug in at home is a nice compromise.

Interesting conjecture on the future differences between portable and corded vapes. I think corded vapes avoid the major design constraint of portables, available power. Without this restriction, desktop units use several times more power to do the work, a true luxury where you otherwise have to trade performance off against power usage. Something like the old joke about the electric car that cost $1,200 to drive cross country......$6 for electricity and $1,194 for extension cords.

Like with cordless power tools, enough high tech (batteries and motors in that case) can make more capable units (at a lot more money.....) but there is, I think, a limit to that. Same as cordless power tools didn't eliminate corded versions, I suspect we'll have both 'classes' of vapes for a while?

i didnt tell mine! You brave soul! Mine would say, not another pot contraption :)

Not to worry, your FC buds have told her for you.......

If you need a couch to lay low on for a while, speak up. Just be sure you bring your stash........

But I like it!
The INH05 has an 'Auto' setting that runs a session between 5 and 5.5. I checked to see if this could be changed, and it can, just not easily. Goboof has a setting that incrementally increases temperatures based on puff, which has potential as well. Now, with the Crafty having a Bluetooth interface how long do we need to wait until we get user programmable settings?

It would be great to set a program that starts low and goes to medium for loads of flavour, and then another one for clouds, both based on what the user prefers instead of what the vape designers think everyone might want. Just give me one user-creatable macro in a portable and I'll be a happy camper, at least for a few days.
It can't be too far off - S&B are maybe closest, but anything with a USB interface should be a candidate with a bit of majick...

Heck - give me a program or two on a desktop and I'll hook up a whip from a desktop to a gas mask, sit beside my desktop vape and surf the web til I can't see the screen, then load up the portable, turn on the macro, and go for a walk til the battery(ies) are dead :)

As the number of steps gets smaller, so will the percentage of guys that find their favorite number? FWIW I too would have cast a wider net, to support the low temp guys......nobody asked me, either.

Hopefully they've done their homework so a minimum will be disappointed. Ironically the number and value of steps is a software thing, the same hardware (heater, sensor, power source, etc.) will support any number of steps desired......if the display can keep up.

Really? I think the only limit is our current technology available at a specific price point but that can, and I think, more than likely, will change, and considering how things are moving along, that change is not in the distant future.

I have no idea.

If the base question here is 'what features might desk tops exploit in the future to gain market advantage over portables' I suggest two.

First off, the 'power to burn' advantage will favor convection and therefore (at least to some) superior taste. Experience with T1 and Cera have underscored the advantages of, and problems delivering, true convection in a portable. For many, this will be the Holy Grail......nothing short of true convection with an easily maintainable all glass vapor path? And of course, even longer battery life.

Secondly, I think desktops have a size advantage, or rather lack of restrictions. Another serious handicap for the portables, as many are trying to fit in a pocket. Then a smaller pocket than their competitors. In this same area WTs are a practical part of desktop options, basically a non starter in portables. Even attempts like the PWT and F-Bomb seriously compromise the portable concept, and I think honest guys would say a bong/GonG/Solo rig is by default now a desktop?

Really? I think the only limit is our current technology available at a specific price point but that can, and I think, more than likely, will change, and considering how things are moving along, that change is not in the distant future.

"at a specific price point"? That would be the 'for a lot more money' part? Price is, I think, always part of the mix.

I think that 'revolution' has been going on in power tools for a long time already, through several evolutions of batteries. Today, we can see in the hardware store, that the cost of providing lots of power for longer times has made the portables the most expensive option? And many of the lightest and easiest to use tools are cordless still?

I just don't see potables eliminating corded vapes any time soon. The market shares may shift a bit (either way), but both types will endure and evolve at least for a while I think?

Already happened at my house. Between my FFs, my INH, my Solo (and maybe my Air, if someone posts some video ;)), my desktops have all been sitting in a closet. My wife is thrilled that our coffee table is finally uncluttered for the first time since 2009.

Alright! Look like it's finally my turn to be the first on the bus.

Look what came in the mail today! Sorry for the iPad photos and messy workspace, but honestly would you want me to waste any time in getting these images to you? This is an unboxing/picture post, I'll be going into more detail on the operation and engineering after I have had some time to spend with it.

Looks like they have plans for a Titanium coloured unit in the future:

The air comes with 2 mouthpieces, a potpourri dish, 1 charger, the Air unit, a silicone sleeve and this awesome little belt holster! It holds the Air, as well as has two little pouches on the side for mouthpieces or vials of ground bud. A nice touch that really improves the portability factor.

Heater looks pretty much exactly the same as later Solo models:

The underside of the unit screws off to expose the removable battery:

The battery on the left (green) is one of my high capacity 18650 cells. The red one on the right is the stock battery that came with the Air. From what I can tell (need to do some testing on it) these are standard 2600mAh LiCo cells.

Got a kick out of this, I guess someone forgot to update the reminder slip!

And oh my - it stands up while charging?! Our prayers have been answered!!

And here it is wearing the "coloured case" as the instruction book calls it. I'm going to call it what it is, a vape-condom. Toke safely kids!

My first impressions of this device are extremely favorable. The unit is made out of high quality materials and feels very solid. It's heavy enough to not feel cheap, but is light enough it could comfortably ride along in a decent sized pocket. I'm not usually the best judge of this sort of thing, but I don't smell any robot fart or strange odors coming off of it either. I am preparing to use it for the first time right now, so I will report back with the stuff you really want to know about shortly.
