Whee, enjoying the end to a relaxing weekend with my ssv and ddave's mods :) coming up to a year of owning mine, a black blemished unit, and I'm still in love. I'd like to find a water piece that won't cause significant blowback, the dry winter air is wreaking havoc on my throat and lungs, the D020 is wonderful on its own but the blowback is too strong :(

Blowback causing herb crumbs to fall into heater?

I had an idea today that I would like to test out at home. Will report later when I do. Hot spot issues from the SSV come (I assume) from the shape of the heating element. The thin ceramac rod is powerful, but it clearly delineates heat unevenly to the load, hence rotation of the wand.

What if something were placed in front of the heating element but inside the heating cover that worked as a disseminator of heat? I have a stainless steel mesh pad that fits into 18mm female joints snugly, and a ground glass HC on my SSV. I don't know that I want the pad to be directly touching the ceramic rod, so perhaps it should go in front of the load, inside of the wand?

Other material suggestions would be helpful, although I don't suppose there's much. Just looking for a way to make the SSV even more hands free than it already is. Will post some pics later with mod attempts and reults

Can anyone give a SS noob the top three (whore moar) tips to getting the most out of it?
For me, I find that the most important things for consistent results are:
- grind your weed, finer the weed the bigger the hits, also quicker the scorching of loads
- pack enough that there is a fairly even layer of bud
- To rotate the wand in the vape with one hand while hitting it (This is the case for all HC models including the Hands-Free)
-To use a water pipe so that I can judge vapor density. I never combust anymore because I know what milky vapor looks like, and when I'm at the limit--when the vapor is thick enough to almost look like smoke--I pull out the wand.

Dark room, grab a white LED light.

I learned with my temp knob at 1-2 o'clock position (YMMV)

Shine light at the whip, right as the hose arches into the mouthpiece.

Begin with a very slow draw... Like as in breathing in normally.

Watch your tube where the light is shining... You will see vapor starting to accumulate, this is your cue to increase draw rate.

Leave enough lung capacity to suck down fresh air after your hit.. Get the vapor as "deep" as possible.

You will be pro before you know it...
What is really fun..
When you think you've mastered your SSV, the next sessions get better and better...

Great point....

I have 2 units...one is 12 o'clock

Other is the same temp at 1:30-200 o'clock.

Each unit is unique, like the individual.
No two units operate exactly the same.

Your SSV, becomes your SSV.

Ya that ∆∆∆ plus the heater cover and whip style, the grind, the dryness of the herb and so on can make for differences. But with lots of practice, uhh, what was I saying?

At first when I had my SSV, I would always keep it around 1-3 but I was burning through loads super quickly. I threw it back to 11 and I've been happy ever since! I thought my Herbalizer made other whip vapes totally unnecessary, but the SSV is so moddable and adaptable to whatever I need at the moment that it's sticking around for good!

I also LOVE that an ELB + m2m makes for an awesome handmade heater cover. And I really can't reiterate enough how great it is for wax. If you have an SSV and a wax pad, congrats--you have a convection E-Nail that can easily reach the whole temp spectrum.

Sure! I use one of these
vapexhale_cloud_evo_black_ez_load_bullet_as650.jpg

filled with herb, popped into one of these
male-glass-adapter-18-8mm-to-18-8mm-for-glass.jpg

And then plug a hose into the other end. Works wonderfully, little stirring required, and helps turn the SSV into a POWERFUL one-hitter--not that it isn't already, but the ELB's vertical design means that the thin point of heat the SSV uses can properly heat all the weed I packed.

In terms of wax, I just one of these.
ultimate-vaporizer-guide-volcano-dry-herb-classic-Liquid-Pad_1.JPG

Often sold at local headshops that carry Volcanos, but very cheap online. Vapes wax SO much better and cleaner than wax in an herb sandwich that it's almost unbelievable. I cut a piece with sharp scissors to fit inside my ground glass wand, and then placed it on top of the screen with wax smeared on it. Hit that at 12 or so and it'll last for forever. Max temp you'll get a few hits that are just as cloudy as a hit off a torched nail. AND SO MUCH BETTER TASTING!!!!

I'm gonna try and post a short video of the wax usage soon because it's almost too good to be believed. And finally I also own a vape (SSV) that runs on low enough wattage to be used with a car inverter...drive up to a view of Los Angeles with the girlfriend, park the car, take SSV dabs, ponder the lights that brighten up this dark, magical city....it's a good time...and yes I'm medicated..

They're really the best. Herb mixing is a very poor substitute as the waxs life is limited to how long the herb will vape before being combusted. also it's the easiest way to dirty up a vape

I have trouble with the mesh pads holding up. But I do use organic cotton at times to hold the wax. It works well too. And I use cotton to mop up oil that gets scattered in the wand or where ever and have you can vape that coton as well

Hm, I might try this out with the volcano pads I have. I'm not really sold on the flavor from my experience with them but I'm excited to experiment!

Lordy... I wish I knew all the terminology used here.

What exactly are you having trouble with? Let's us know and we can fill you in. I thought there was a vape wiki but I can't find it.

Cut the whip down, 18" is ideal for me (gives you 4 whips from one 3' section), experiment with longer/shorter for preference. Stock is 3', that is a ton of dead space needed to fill and emptied each hit.

To get consistent results
  • the distance between the load and heater makes a difference - with smaller loads you need to increase the temp
  • draw speed is important - go too slow and it is very very easy to combust
  • Make sure you keep your draw speed consistent, it's easy to forget and get lazy with your draw
What Heater cover and whip combo are you using?

The main point here was "Visual feedback " as you are drawing...

A mirror will work well also.
