Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I have a step by step tutorial for straightening irons.

first let me say Different strains, the density of the strain's flowers themselves, the humidity of the flowers, the amount of pressure you use with the straighter, the amount of thc content that the bud itself contains, & (i've read this on other forums too) apparently the type of parchment paper you use; all of these things have a part in each separate category that have to do with both the yield & potency of final product. i've been using this sort of "Pulsing" technique while pressing.

first you wanna get your size down of how big of pieces you press (i seriously only use .10-.25 size flower nugs)

then you want to let the edge of the piece of flower set just right outside the "pressing zone", but obviously put about 95% of the flower inside the "press zone"

get a really really good grip on the flower itself (i have squeezed the nug too fast one time & it shot out the side of the parchment like a bullet.) Don't squeeze too hard/quick

just get the flower in between the paper & the iron, get a good grip, SQUEEZE SLOW

within the first 5 seconds of pressing slowly throughout the 5 second span of time tilt your iron to a 45 degree angle then to a full 90 degree angle,

then apply a hardcore squeeze (this is where i start the pulse method) i basically release my pressure from my iron about to half & then i pulse grip the straightening iron for about 7-8 more seconds.

let the little puck slide out & onto another piece of parchment paper (the less human hand involvement, the better) & then put that piece of paper in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

also remember that every strain realistically has their own special "Rosin" temp for pressing,

Unless you are using professional equipment of some sort, i'd keep the temperature around the 250-280 F.

Any irons you will recomend to use with that clamp?

@b0 Check out my post HERE. It has a link to the cheapest digital straightener I could find. It goes down to 100c.

This is my clamp set up I made with the items in that linked post.

Last night I pressed some nugs at 100c and some at 150c to see if the higher temp oil doesn't budder up. I'll report back in a few days.

Wet to straight remington it will get you to about 220ish with 600 lbs using a trigger clamp I'd start the press 190 and slowly escalate till clamps max psi. If you run into the problem its still sizzling but not flowing I release quick turn puck to smash at new angle to make rosin flow off the repressed puck, 600 lbs just isn't enough for a quick easy yield, unless you don't mind sap because of temp to try n hit max yield. Spend the bit of money to get max yield with @Joel W. And save on your herb. It will save you money and herb, plus most terps burn @250f so most your flavor will be gone with a straightner

Edit*** MOST straightner heat up to their temp in 15 seconds is that long enough to get a low temp with correct psi? I honestly think any one who will rosin daily should look into at least $200 setup because why use a spoon when you need a fork?

Nice work man! Betcha you are doing some nice squishes! I do find that when I squish at 220-250f (roughly 110-120c) or much longer than usual that I don't get buddering except after very, very long term storage. Still, this'll vary based on the factors mentioned above, the terp profile may be very different in your material to mine and that alone will make the difference, my THC Bomb does not autobudder, at all - Cluster Bomb is another story! Regardless, the Cluster bomb is hands down the tastier strain both buddered or not ;)

@herbivore21 If it wasn't for the wealth of knowledge here on FC I don't think I would have even tried making rosin.

I first tried with the wifes hair straightener and body pressure with out much sucess (vaped my pucks so no loss). As this thread grew I kept reading. Aftering seeing that it definitely works I knew I just needed a better setup. My herbs are as good as you will find in these parts unless you are growing it yourself (10-15% return making bho). The HMK clamp looked like a fun project and not a huge price tag. I spend $55AU on my supplies. I think it is a great starting point for a lot of people. Plus it's mobile as fuck. Throw it in your back pack and take it to a mates place so you can finally dab some of his buds for a change lol. I tried vaping my pucks from the clamp setup and I get one smallish hit in the solo on 7 so I assume I'm getting 80-90% of the actives out. Thats good enough for me for now. I know I have safe and healthy oil and that is priority number 1. I save my pucks and I'll do some cooking with them eventually.

I've got acess to a vice and I have some 50mm square steel tube. I'm thinking about gluing straightener heat plates inside the steel tube. So the hot side of the heater will be up against the steel and mount those in my vice. I think this idea was mentioned in this thread. Just gotta see how wide it opens. I don't think I will have much luck if I dont have room to insulate the steel tube from the vice? I think the cold steel vice will bleed off the heat. What do you guys think?

Wow, this looks like a nice and cheap setup to start making rosin! I'm gonna give it a try for sure, thx for sharing!

So basically I need the iron, clamp and some wood. What did you use to mount everything together like that?

I used JB Weld to glue the heaters to the wood and to stick the controls to the clamp. Then the wood was screwed to the black covers on the clamps jaws. I filled the the open ends of the control housing with Kneed-It so the electrics are sealed up. I also cut the bar of the clamp down and put a bolt in it to stop it opening far enough to stress the wires. You want it to be safe and strong.

Thanks again, will try this as soon as I'm back at home after my holidays

what is Kneed-It?

I was able to just use double sided tape to fix my the heaters directly to the jaws (and controller to clamp). When I took my straighteners apart, they had thick heat shields already attached so I didn't even need wood blocks. The wires were already insulated also, but I covered the clamp's bar with electrical tape to be extra safe. Like @Nugg I cut the bar down also (for aerodynamics, lol), it was a pain cause my hacksaw blade was dull but I persevered.

Shared this before but since we're on topic again, seemed worth the reshare. I had similar progression to @Nugg. Straightners are a good starting point because you can do this as a next step easily. I remember reading people talking about clamps + straightners in this thread, but it wasn't until I saw a couple pictures that I really got it and it made sense. I also love that it's portable. Took it out to a desert gathering to demo for a friend once.

But ya, I'd expect anyone squashing volume regularly would want to move up to a vise/press setup.

I don't see why plates with this surface shape would improve performance.

Granted, that's not a good reason to discount the idea, but the claimed yield from that press was roughly 20 percent (they didn't give any specific numbers). They consider that to be an impressive yield, but that's pretty average around here.

I've had returns of over 20% from bottom shelf dispensary flower, using my flat faced blocks and arbor press. @Joel W. gets well over 20% using his flat faced blocks and vice.

Until there are reproducible results that exceed what is possible with the current technology, I don't see any reason to move to non-flat plates.

I've had the best results pressing with the enchilada technique. The puck extends to the very edges of the block, and the rosin gets pushed out and away from the heat because there's no free space between the blocks for it to dwell.

A specially countoured press surface would ideally be countoured all the way to the edges, since pressed pucks will ideally be the same size as the pressing surface.

20% is average around here? Must have missed that. I definitely see folks referencing 20% as ideal with flower but I understood it as something hopefully achieved with quality material, not something easily reproducible without regard for the material. Kudos to those who get 20% on the regular.

I can't speak for what would or wouldn't be ideal as this is the first contoured design I have seen. Are there others to look at for reference? Are you referring to a specific design or just hypothesizing?

Also, I am personally impressed by the squish as visually, it appears to be a high yield for one squish. They also claim to be designing the press from the ground up. Not a repurposed press of some other sort. Could be wrong, but it sounds like exactly what folks are looking for, so thought I'd share.

The more designs, the better... Right? Perhaps this isn't the best thread to post interesting works in progress for Rosin Tech? Hmmm...

I usually hit around 20% if the first press doesnt yield much I switch strains. Gg4, dmt, and guava being my top 3 so far. Im interested in it if the plates really reduce effort and it would be a good way to keep puck in one spot. I have a few raw terracotta stones too see how they rehydrate.

I been trying to lurk on this thread for a while now keeping tabs on developing methods but I fell way behind now trying read back. But I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good setup to get good yields( hair straightener, ect, ect) and the technique used for that setup.

Thank you guys for your time!

I really appreciate the importance of trying new approaches, but I think it's also important to pay careful attention to results, so you know for sure what works best.

I also really appreciate you bringing that information here. I didn't mean for my criticisms of the idea to be read as ungratefulness towards you at all.

In fact, I only took the time to respond because the idea is genuinely interesting to me, and because you asked us to share our thoughts in your post. In my comment I was hypothesizing and theorizing, and the only design and information I have for reference are what you linked in your post.

I could have been clearer about what I meant by "average" in my post. I intended that to be taken as a very qualified "average"- meaning 20% is about what would be expected from an otherwise equivalent setup (by that I mean using high-quality raw material, heavy-duty specially machined plates, and a multi-ton press).

As a recommendation on hair straighteners, try to get one that will be the width of your bud puck when processed, otherwise your subjecting a good deal of your return to heat causing PITA collection. At least in my experience.

So a u-smooth is probably not a good one to use due to the sole fact of how small the width of it is?

What straightener can I go to Walmart & buy tomorrow that has a digital dial(or some way for me to know the temp of it) & a fatter plate?

Btw guys apparently my buddy came across some 38% "rocky mountain" was the name I believe & he was so nice that he let me press it... & the tatse is the best thing ever. I wish I had a lifetime supply of it. I would never vape anything else. I'd post a pic if I could figure out how to

Hey guys... I really need to know of a good straightening iron that's digital & has temps around 200-300 F.

Any suggestions as far as walmart or?..
