So I've been thinking about an Omni XL condenser compatible stem and was wondering what you think @phattpiggie

The reason the mouthpiece is recessed like that is I use an MFLB Orbiter and the MP is too long and stops the WonG from sealing properly.

The reason the stem doesn't fully cover the MP is to assist in dismantling for cleaning. It's more than likely the little bit of MP that sticks out isn't going to offer enough grip to remove properly so might be worth recessing further.

The major design changes are:

• 8mm ID SS tubing to accommodate Omni condenser
• Recess for MP to sit in
• Wider overall stem diameter

What ya think, doable?

@GreenHopper Nice to see your drawing to scale, it helped a lot especially with my ruler.

I think you'd need to do it like this in wood as the final part of the taper is going to be a thin wall.

I put the Omni MP further into the joint but still allowed for easier removal, SS or Ti and there wouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure it would be 'doable'.

I never thought this idea was going to work, it took 3 tries and it's still not 100%.
All seals up well and you can create a vacuum with it's used both ways.

@phattpiggie Trying to be as close to scale as possible but I cheated a little on that one, figured the WonG part by eye using the Indian Summer steam as a guide. Figured as a brainstorming exercise close enough would do

I'm coming round to the idea of fully recessed. You're right, removal will be fine, just poke it out from the Tip end.

I was assuming wood or acrylic? Would the acrylic not have enough strength?

Interesting concept, had to watch that vid about 10 times. Although I only remembered to up the resolution after the first 5

So what is that?

Does the outer glass stem have a carb hole?

I assume the inner stem acts as a condenser?

Looks 18mm?

What's at the MP end, large O-ring?

What does it look like in use?

Some one else's idea @HD Springer. They asked if it could be done so I had a go a couple of times, one cracked on me and the other dropped way too far into the 18mm female.
I had to mod a chisel to get the internal taper, a 1:10 tapered drill would be better but getting them the right size is proving difficult.

It's Ovangkol, in 18mm male mode

14mm female mode

And it has a full length condenser fitted, which looks a little lost in the 14mm female.

@GreenHopper it's for use with both male and female joints.
I'll just keep editing as I work out what to say lol

I said before I don't want for him to pull out of turning stuff and will always recommend him if I am unable.

As well as working out the M/F VC vong I did a one size, hopefully, fits all whip adapter.

Not owning any glass has made this an interesting experiment. Plenty of Q&A and pictures helped.

This taper will hopefully fit into a couple of different glass MP's.
Ovangkol turned for 10mm silicone, with a full length condenser.

Against an 18 and 14 male for a bit of scale

Even tho this is 'rough as fuck' it's gone together well and I've learned a lot about how I'll go about doing another.

All the bits are either off cuts or scrap wood, the Sumac had cracks and worm holes, the Padauk was left from some I cut down for blanks and the Cocobolo is thin slices that were left over from cutting down blanks to a better size.

Sumac is fantastic for colour and grain, the red Padauk dust gets everywhere, as does the Cocobolo.
Book matching and mortice cutters have been the things which have most come to mind while I've done this.

Received my most recent order the other day. @phattpiggie just keeps getting better and better at making stems!

The Mokume are super hard to get a good photograph of; camera just doesn't capture all the facets and sparkles. The red-gold one especially has small metallic flakes of gold in it that look incredible with the brass accent. The way the spiral turned out on the silver makes it looks like it's flowing water or something when you spin it in your hands. Couldn't be happier with how they turned out!

Oh and the 14mm end works great in my water pipe as well.

The Osage orange turned out 1000% cooler than I was expecting. I totally did not anticipate those tiger stripes. They wrap around and make stripes pointing down on the other side. It's one big grain that wraps around, love it! The Osage also seems to take to sanding amazingly.. People with blackwood stems know how smooth and satiny that material turns out. Almost plastic feeling it's so hard and shiny. The Osage is similar but even smoother somehow; feels like ivory or something. Fantastic wood!

You can see the Chakte stem ended up a slightly different dimensions than the Osage. Very pleased with that! It's a subtle enough difference that the stems feel very different in the hand/mouth while still looking like a matching pair. The Chakte is a little slimmer towards the MP, swear that wood must me mm thick around the condenser.. feels great!

More than welcome @Prolusio, tracking to your part of the world is non existent.

Glad they arrived safe and sound and you like the way they turned out.

1200 grit paper, occasionally and carefully wet, is how I've been finishing everything, sometimes 600 is enough depending on the wood.

I love the way the Osage changes as you move it around, grain patterns appearing as the light hits it then disappearing.

I feel silly asking about this with so many amazing things in the pics, but what's the inside of that box look like? Love the wood and the magnets and I am very interested in that thing.

It's a quilted maple valet created by @Winegums! He's actually improved on the design since I got mine, the lid has more grooves going vertically for holding stems now. Mine just has two long horizontal ones that the Osage and Chakte are sitting in. Magnets/grooves only on one side the other is just wooded lid.

The green body is another from Winegums; it's made of dyed burl. It turned out super unique! The way the dye hits it made some awesome orange accents. It's fat but not quite 18mm, doesn't fit in glass really.

Haven't really seen many dyed wooden stems.. Are they difficult to do @phattpiggie?

I've even thought about getting a piece of lumpwood charcoal and having it cast in a really bright resin.

Details you like on the outside could all disappear, and it works the other way, new stuff will appear.

That one was dyed with Aniline dye on the surface with about 4-5 coats to get the colour and depth needed. I then applied bee's wax heated it making sure it soaked into the dyed wood to lock in the dye. I'd like to get a vacuum chamber soon so that I can get more penetration on the dye and also do some stabilization.

I've got a list of 'I'd likes' I add more than I remove.
There are some stunning blanks available Winegums, and some very expensive one's.

The mystery wood stem arrived safe and sound at MomoftheGoons, secretly I think she did a little wee.

Blackwood and Birds Eye Zebrano with brass accents. Zebrano is great anyway but I saw these and the order was for 'Something figured, I'll let you decide' I saw this stuff and it was a no brainer.
