Discontinued Hopper io

Great post MoltenTiger

I agree, my io seems to be a little weaker than I remember my hopper to be but that said I do long draws at max temp through water and I rarely go for a second rip.
The second rip isn’t near as tasty and often the cloud is much weaker.
After the first rip the ABV looks spent to me, dark enough every time I palm check it.

I have two batteries in rotation that came with the io, I’m starting to get times where it will only do two chambers before the third give me the flash and weak vapour.
When that happens I just swap batteries and carry on.
I think I’m ready to order a few more so it’s good to hear there is stock now.

my PFE and new silicone mp is now shipped (thanks @VGOODIEZ) so looking forward to giving that a go

I really need to look into the plug in power mod, I’m a bit wary of using a power mod for such a cutting edge device to be honest but I mostly use it at home and going through batteries is not ideal.

edit to add: 3.87 is the voltage after two full chambers in 2 rips, the lights started to flash right at the start of the 3rd.
I had left the unit to cool for a couple of hours after 1 + 2 so maybe that battery has seen better days.

All of the OGs I’ve had have never extracted my ABV past a dark brown. My io can make my ABV nearly black, almost as dark as a Dynavap can take my material without combusting. I rarely go above 4 with my io because I don’t like the flavor at 5 and 4 hits me hard enough. The funny thing is that temp 4 on my io extracts similarly to 5 on my OG but tastes better. I rarely go above 4.5 on my OG because I don’t like the flavor. So I usually end up with medium brown ABV at 4-4.5 with my OG, and I get dark brown ABV with my io at 4.

You folks are killing me with positive io reviews and I’m inching closer to pulling the trigger on one. To throw salt on the fire, my Tinymight isn’t working quite the same as I’ve lost the haptic feedback last night and I’ve yet had a chance to troubleshoot. My OG Ti needs a thorough cleaning too as it’s performance - even with new batts - has been just ok lately. Then again, it’s been average most of the time I’ve had it, even after its lone 1-year RMA stint as well as before it. It’s been back almost a year too. Maybe it’s time.

Leaning toward a plain Ti again. We shall see... :peace:

So far I've had my IO for 4 days, and I've put it through a lot of usage, and it's performing amazingly well. It can do 5-6 bowls on a fresh battery as advertised, and I have had zero issues so far. I've settled on 3.5 for usage through water, and 1.5 when using native with a glass extension on the PFE.

@ 3.5 through water it milks up a bong solid, and I finish a bowl in 1 hit.

@ 1.5 native it delivers nice clouds and I finish a bowl in 3 hits.

Both result in nice, even, medium brown ABV.

Really a stellar performer so far and if the performance and consistency keep up, then HL might have a winner here :)

Come on colored units 😩 I’m getting the itch to buy !
Have you had any colored Grasshopper in the past? Then you would know the possible pitfalls.
The color can begin to rub or scratch off over time, especially where the pocket clip can rub when installing or removing the back end. It is relatively heavy duty, but I can tell you a green ti of mine, that is one of the newest in the house (from 2018) shows more 'age' that any of the others.

I can't say 'don't buy the color', but at the same time, it should not be expected to stay pristine for long unless coddled.
My choice for a new io was simply the ss and I'm very happy with it. SS settles in (initial patina and handling) and keeps pretty much the same look, well, indefinitely?

Thanks for your early feedback! Sounds pretty hot though...looks like there is lotsa bandwidth in there for convection concentrate extraction! Must be getting close for the Oils Front End release! :)

This is more my speed and temp. Ok, maybe a bit higher temp but not scalding (for me). I’m a native user 99% of the time. While I have a dearth of silicone tips I never use them. I’ve almost lost them a few times so it’s one less thing to lose. Maybe, just maybe, today is the day to pull the trigger on an io... :brow::peace:

Of course, I just tried my hopper for the first time in almost a year. Worked for one session, then not again after I turned it off. i must credit our friends at Hopper Labs. Now they are using Covid as the excuse to be delayed in making repairs (concern over the mail being contaminated I guess so I can’t even send it in, riiiiggghhhtttt). However, in true Hopper Labs form, I can buy a new Hopper.io and get that immediately (and take an $80 credit for my old one).

I won’t spend more money on a unit that will take forever to be repaired when it inevitably has to be returned for repairs. I think I’ll keep using my other vapes, and see how long I am “in line” to return my Hopper (they’ll notify me when I can return it). i see no reason to give them more money for the same old BS tricks.

If the io temp range is 180-230 then it is effectively a legacy unit with temps 3.5-6

6? Is that a new temp level? Lol. Reminds me of the movie Spinal Tap when Christopher Guest shows Rob Reiner his amp and says when you’re at 10 (highest volume) and you need more oomph, where do you go? “But this one goes to 11”

Yeah, I’m running my OG Ti from 2.8-3.5 most of the time natively. With a fresh load and fresh batt (and new ones too I have) I get decent clouds and extraction.

My fingers are getting itchy. Is VAS really real? :peace:

Yes VAS is very real!

Anodised ones did wear and the ring from undoing the clip is real but I could be tempted to buy an extra one, they look cool!

Green is a tough color to get into titanium. On the higher voltage, it needs to be zero'd in and you might not want it to sit in the bath too long or you'll get more yellow into it. Looking at the Green Hopper Labs is opting for, I believe this to be a mid Green after the blue and before the yellow appear in the spectrum about half the voltage of the higher "toxic" green. Again, if you let it sit too long in the anodize bath, you'll wind up with yellow.

To get a deep "full" anodize, pieces need to sit for a long time in the bath where the amperage drops to under .1A and most folks don't do this as once they get the desired color, they pull the piece. Time in the bath will yield a thicker surface finish slightly but on the Greens, you kinda gotta pull them and not let them sit, so that makes sense as to why it didn't endure.

Personally, the more you break it in, the better the distressed green will look over time. As far as Ti, the anodizing is just a surface finish, so you are correct that it won't remain pristine with wear & tear. Scratches will show as will scuffs and friction points with use & abuse.

I would love to see the colored units made out of powder coated stainless steel. I don’t know if there would be material safety concerns with that type of finish and this application. I would think it would be more durable. It wouldn’t be suitable for the PFE but I think bare metal is best for that application anyways.

Even though I don’t always need the stealth, it’s nice when things blend in.

a few minutes ago a guy picked up my titanium hopper which i sold after using a little in 3 days, because the ABV from my SS gets little darker.

i have directly buy 2 new devices in SS from HL and will hope the best that the ABV gets so dark like my first unit

nice weekend to all.

I love the Hopper io more than other vapes ;):rockon::rockon::rockon:

Edit: Hopper Labs has sent out my order same day :) now i must be wait for some weeks. thx for that

Call me stupid but I just ordered a Hopper io Ti - and an extra battery. Let the games begin. I got an order confirmation, not before I had to login to my account BEFORE I could add it to my cart to complete the order because doing so as I guest and then logging into my account simply didn't work - thrice - and then I did it the other way including the Paypal transaction. The first attempt landed me on an order page with a previous order - go figure. I'll be counting the days hopefully unlike with my OG Ti which was measured in months (17 to be exact). I hope to have it soon. :peace:

You are a DopeGun(TM) man now.

Thank you, sir. The DopeCannon(TM) I own in the Tinymight needs repair now and that was the final straw in ordering an io. I’ve been following this thread since the beginning and recently inquired about the io getting up enough nerve to buy one given my checkered history with my OG Ti, batteries, and HL. Still love my OG Ti but it’s getting long in tooth and another Hopper, now the io, makes sense. I was on the fence about SS vs Ti and went with the Ti again. Not sure it will hold a candle to the Tinymight but it’s not meant as a replacement for it, rather compliment it. Though I’ll likely be without it for a while so a new vape, the io, will take its place for a while. It’s feasible I may buy another vape too as I (finally) can these days. Heck, I could’ve bought io’s for stocking stuffers for my family and friends but it’s not the point.

I assume shipping wont take that long to the Northeast. The site nor my order confirmation indicates approximate shipping times but I think others have received their io’s in relative short times recently. We’ll see. HL still has a ways to go with communication and ordering (see my order experience above - their browser cookies don’t seem to work well). Definitely cleaning it thoroughly before I use it - that much I know. Cheers. :peace:

I spent about 10 min cleaning out black residue from near the bottom of the chamber before my ISO dipped q-tips came back clean. Standard for the last couple bodies I’ve received ... also ran it at max for about 30 sec to a min without inhaling through it to burn anything off.

No off tastes so I’m assuming I got it all :)

That doesn't sound good at all, have you contacted HL about it? What do you think this black residue is? Manf oils? Has this been the first report about it? New to me, but i've only had legacies... over a 1/2 dozen of them, and never experienced anything like that.

You don't think, that it's possible that the bodies have been previously used/tested with material do you?

I wouldn’t put it past HL to pre-test units. I do think it’s partly manufacturing residue as well. I’ve heard of many instances with legacy and io Hoppers being dirty upon arrival. I don’t recall my own pre order Ti and think I was too excited and just used it out of the box after a few burn offs. I will clean the io completely and run burn offs however before any flower gets loaded this time. “I was so much older then I’m younger (and smarter) than that now.” :peace:

It's a manufacturing oil/residue ... I'm far from the first person to have this ... like @Vaporific said above, "Definitely cleaning it thoroughly before I use it - that much I know." ... I'm sure that's in reference to this issue.

Edit: Most people likely don't even realize it's there ... you would have had to look down the chamber with a light to notice it if you didn't try cleaning before use; and after 1st use, obviously one wouldn't know what is a manufacturing residue vs residue from usage.

I'm super obsessive about my stuff being clean, so I always clean thoroughly anything I purchase before use. So I notice these things ... just like the residue that can't be removed from the DT SiC cups no matter how long one scrubs at it.

I'd say I have a normal io, 180-230 is on the label, and really I'm probably getting closer to the 222 which I once used to set my Arizer EQ at.
My Hopper io manual shows a temperature range of 150-230° Celsius. The website shows two different temperature ranges, 130-230 and 180-230. From my experience using the io it seems to line up pretty well with the 150-230 listed in the manual. It would be nice if we could get official confirmation of the actual temperature range from @Hopper Labs or maybe even @VGOODIEZ . Hopper Labs should probably update their website too.
