Finally got a $7 scale and weighed a load before and after 11 routine potent hits with the io. I had no idea what to expect, but was surprised to see a whopping 43% reduction in mass. Presumably a high percentage of the loss was moisture, even though I purposely let the weed dry a bit before vaping. Weed is supposedly 90% water when growing. This weed has resisted drying, thus it wasn't ground fine enough IMO. This might or might not explain why there is some greenish color remaining in the spent pile. Without knowing how much of the 43% mass was water and how much was "psychoactive", this is mostly useless info. Maybe I will see a significant difference with different grinds, dryness or strains.
If you increase the weight on the scales, cheap scales usually have a sweet spot in the 1+g range for accuracy, you might see a small difference in measurement of the plant material. Averaging 3 or more readings could hone it in further. Typically I'd expect about a 1/3rd reduction in mass after vaporisation. Although it has been a while since I spent the time to measure it.
There is also the issue of varying extent of vaporising thoroughness, which is what I suppose you are testing? Do you have any control samples from other vapes?
That's the photo I sent to HL when asking for a hotter Ti body. The darker SS io is more diminished. Now I'm interested in trying to measure the difference on a scale. It is clear that there is more of a chemical change in the top SS io ABV due to the colour, and there is likely more moisture in the Ti ABV too.
Back when I worked in crop reception for big pharma, I was often measuring moisture content for alkaloid poppies. The site required <16% moisture levels for mitigating a fire risk hazard in the storage warehouses.
~14% should feel bone dry, with some springyness occuring in the plant matter above 16%. Cured cannabis should have relatively low values, I would guess from 12-20% would be an expected/acceptable range.
I look forward to a science sesh in the near future
I flew with my Hopper to Canberra recently, so nice to take out and about sampling some different strains in different locations. I didn't bring any glass but found a really neat glycerine coil piece at Off Ya Tree. I have barely been using the batteries lately, and found that 2 cells was enough for my cousin and I to get pleasantly baked with over about 6 hours of usage having maybe 6-8 chambers each. For this reason and many more I am happy with my choice in chosen portable (using any other would have been a big hassle from carry-on going through security, to ease of concealment in the field and at base, to rapidity of use and easily stowing it right after, not to mention the sheer efficacy was ideal).
It's very convenient and took over from the less enjoyable joint/bong archaic method, which is why I consider it one of the best treasures and value it as such.
It is not so simple to get a good hopper, it has always taken much patience and good will, with some luck on top. This sucks, but so does much of everything, and often things are meaningfully bad instead of just seemingly needlessly frustrating.
The old mantra seems to be a long winded reality because the truth is, good things are worth waiting for and there is plenty of goodness out there waiting to find each of us. Patience grasshoppers, the device might offer a quick fix but it itself is not one. I definitely appreciate that the Hoppers in my life for 5 years running have been absolutely incredible, but I hold no illusion, it is mostly the plant to be thankful for, and luckily at least that is infallible.
I figure most are thoroughly enjoying the io (should they finally have it). There are still potential issues but it is night and day to the early days. Perhaps night with a full moon.
An update from HL is well overdue, it would be nice to hear how things are on their end...
It's a real pity that ultra portable instantly pocketable zero wait time vaping isn't more developed and offered from multiple parties already.
Off Ya Tree had Volcanos, Pax's, Da Vinci's and a whole shelf of inferior-to-me and mostly more expensive options. All cheap import goods made with limited vision and tuned for profit, it's all the market cares about across the board. I'm very happy with my exclusive and far-advanced kit, wonder if the clerk remembered my name dropping of the BCG when picking up an overpriced low quality alloy 2-piece grinder. I wish more would prioritise and offer the quality I gravitate to when seeking product. The reason I deal with HL is because there is no one else offering an equivilant, so with nothing to compare to, and witnessing their continual efforts, so be it that so many issues remain unsquashed. Those issues aren't really a big deal, but it sure sucks when you are left craving. It's not half bad at least knowing what you want, relying on someone else to offer it is always a nuisance. No one else will ever build such a ridiculous device and as crazy as it may be, I am very happy for HL to keep trying!
I wouldn't use them as a contract manufacturer but buying one off devices from them has easily been worth it and I've had more success from their io vape product than any other, including the Sublimator I purchased for 97% off. I hope more people find this crazy luck I've managed in quitting smoking, it is a big part of how I did quit smoking.
Had a sesh in a place much like my old house from my heavy bong hitting days whilst up here scoring grape ape and OG kush.
Wow do I wish I got a Hopper instead of the MFLB in 2011. What a waste some of those subsequent years turned out being.
The hopper is for a particular type like me, actually allowing me to hugely upgrade my lifestyle, I wish I did even earlier, extemely happy to be on this side of the equation.
