Herb Grinders

Question, do people just ISO bath their shredders to clean it, or is there a different method?

I bought my santa cruz shredder from ezvapes.com.....Cheapest price by far; its $74 after shipping for a medium 4 piece from santa cruz and is $59 with shipping from ezvapes. Then use FACE code to get 10% off....Came to $54 with shipping

That is a good price. I don't need two but so tempting.

I've had a bunch of no-name grinders that I thought did the job. Then I decided to buy a 2 pc Spacecase. That was maybe 3 years ago. I use it nearly every day and it works amazingly. I can't believe it has lasted so long! And yea, I just dip in ISO for a few minutes every few months. I love it and will probably buy another if this one every starts to shit the bed :)

Received my Medium blue Santa Cruz Shredder today.

I am impressed. I always wondered why anybody would pay more than $20 for a grinder. Now I know.

The attention to detail and the machining done is top notch. Might try and shoot some macros, the amount of texture on these grinders is unreal.

Kills the space case? In what ways does the SCS kill the SC?

I have been using the 2pc ti SC for years and have been totally satisfied with it. What advantages would I see if I got the SCS?

I have used lots of people's grinders over the years and owned many myself but there is only one I will swear by. The Mendo Mulcher.

I had a 2" one with kief screen and I sold it for a 2.25" doublethick when Dave introduced it. The doublethick got stolen and I bought another without hesitation. Those of my friends who are picky about stuff like this and who have used it have gone on to buy one for themselves.

I find most grinders are too shallow and hard to get a grip on. I like stuffing my grinders packed full of flower and tearing through grams at a time.

I don't think the Space Case or Sharpstone are nearly as much as they're cracked up to be. I have some friends that like a Sharpstone better than my Mendo but it's just because it has a giant keef screen... it still feels like a cheap grinder.

I am still a SC fan, and use them daily (small and medium 2 piece)
The SCS does have a couple advantages as far as my personal use.
With a grinder filled crammed full of "nugs", the SCS will get me turning from a dead frozen stand still more easily.
The herb is a bit more finely mulched and fluffed also.
The biggest advantage I have seen is the easier torqued turning from a "stuffed/locked" position.
The top piece overlaps farther on SCS over the lower lip, providing a type of leverage for easy turn.
The 50/50 SC overlap while successful from a physics standpoint does not add to the circumferential leverage as does the SCS.

Sorry if someone mentioned this, there is no way I am sifting through 138 pages haha, anyone use a Smart Crusher? I got one back in October for $18 shipped! My friend just got one and it is now $23 shipped. My favorite part is it's not made out of aluminium, I haven't had a single metal shavings issue. This thing is crazy heavy too, it's good for cracking cannabis and skulls.

On the note of cleaning your grinder. I usually just put it in the freezer for a bit so I can more easily smack the trichomes and such off.

santa cruz, kills the space case, mendo, every grinder. it is simply that good.
You're welcome to your opinion, but the fact is that although the Santa Cruz has a better machining to it than other I've seen, other than the Space Case (which also seems perfect, finish wise), in actual use you can't tell the difference between that brand (OR Space Case) and an under $20 grinder, as far as the grinding results. In fact, the squared off 'teeth' in the Santa Cruz design can provide a lot of resistance when grinding herb that still has a good moisture content. Mine is a small two piece, and on one load I ended up giving up and grinding with another model. Using a larger size would help, since larger nearly always makes grinding easier.

I've heard that the more recent Mendo Mulchers may have a different tooth design than the original shape, but I've got a 4 piece and a 2 piece, and they both shred great but don't grind well at all because the teeth only have 2 edges- front and back. After the initial 'cutting' pass, very little grinding happens without redistributing the herb inside. It does a great job if you don't need a fine grind. If you do, it's a lousy design.

The Sharpstone is an inexpensive brand, made in the same factory, on the same CNC machines, as Sharp Crusher, Smart Crusher, Chromium Crusher, Cali Crusher, etc. Sharpstone is a little more expensive than some other brands, but not made any differently or better. They're all the same, and they're all good quality. Space Case and Santa Cruz stand out due to their excellent machining, but that does NOT translate to better grinding. In fact some of the cheaper Crusher brands have a better tooth design than Space Case, which is standard diamond shaped. An offset 4 edged design offers more effective cutting edges IMO. I have a $15 Smart Crusher that works as well for me as any more expensive model. I still like the old MixnBall best, due to the anodized finish and the offset tooth design that was likely 'borrowed' by the Crusher designer. I WOULD avoid the gimmick grinders and the ones with smilie faces and skulls, etc.

The need for an expensive brand of grinder is out of date, just as much as the need to buy a Volcano to avoid getting a POS vape. For some years now all good grinders have been made 100% CNC from a single chunk of high quality aluminum, including the various Crusher models. They just don't bother to eliminate the burrs and small scratches that are hard to avoid. The pricy grinders are riding the same outdated reputation train as the 'cano. I've bought nearly every name brand out there, as well as generics, over the years, and I'm 100% comfortable with my survey. I'm all for buying a Santa Cruz or Space Case 2 piece, especially in the 2" size, but the 4 piece prices are ridiculous IMO. I'd rather get a nice 2 piece and get an inexpensive sifter box from Puffitup. You come out better price wise and you can process quantity quicker.

I've put in my :2c: on the grinder issue many times, just because I have used so many different brands (being the curious type), and I'll likely put it in again in the future. Take it or leave it, as you like.

Someones always watching..
I use the smallest sharp stone grinder they sell. Its great for me because I only like to grind a bowl at a time..But Ive had 2 separate issues where Ive found a tiny strand of a metal shaving, kind of concerning.Still works well over 8 months now.But the teeth seem to be wearing down. Im converting and buying a mendo mulcher 2" double thick next...Sharp stone works great but the teeth arent made for abuse and wear down easy..and imo the straight lines in the teeth lend to the weakening of the structure(metal shavings) if that makes sense...

edit-Just ordered the mendo mulcher, cant wait to see what all the hype is about

I'm curious to why you state this?

The reason I moved to the SCS was to avoid the metal shavings and aluminum dust from my cheaper grinder.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear that I was reporting on MY experiences with quite a few different brands, from high priced to generic. My experience may not be yours.

The inexpensive grinders I've used have done as well as the pricy ones. I don't say all the cheap ones are high quality, but aircraft grade aluminum is (and has been) used in a lot of good but inexpensive brands for some years now. Some have the perception that expensive grinders use a better grade of aluminum and that's certainly not true in all cases. I'm not crazy about some of the house brands sold by some vape dealers, but I haven't had any shiny stuff show up in my ground bud from any of the grinders I've used. At the same time, I've seen reports of even Space Case shedding metal. I strongly suspect that some people are trying to cram buds with big stems in theirs, and that may well be the reason they've had shavings, and/or bent or broken teeth (which I mostly attribute to non CNC machining on the teeth). I never load bud containing significant stems in a grinder. I break up the bud and place the pieces between the teeth, removing any and all stems larger than about 1 mm. There's nothing in my grinders, stem wise, big enough to provide any significant resistance to the grinding action.

I'm reporting on the grinders I've used and the results I've had. I'm certainly not alone in being perfectly happy with some low priced grinders. If using an expensive grinder works for you, fine with me. I actually prefer a Space Case or Santa Cruz in a 2" two piece size (like the look and feel, and they're good value for the $), but the prices on their 4 pc. models put me off. My favorite grinder is my 2 piece MegaLeaf MixnBall, but the 4 pc. prices- no thanks, even though I liked the removable screens.

i have a space case small, a space case ti medium 4 piece, mendo medium 4 piece, and a mendo medium two piece, and a scs medium. i have had space case get stuck when starting nermous times. mendo is good but grinding action isnt as smooth as the scs. scs is effortless

That's a hell of alota grindage. :D
I've got 8 grinders ;) (9 if you count my coffee grinder:lol:)
I pretty much only use my med SCS or the coffee grinder, and one of my cheapo 4 piece grinders I use as a sift box (grind in a different grinder, then sift in the 4pce)

Yeah, I stopped after two expensive grinders. They do the same thing at the end of the day ;) funny thing is, as much as I love my SCS, I have been using my Volcano grinder quite a bit lately. Like the finer grind.

I still love my big blue SCS though, such a sexy beast. :D

Haha, I too stopped after 2 expensive ones (TI med SC, and red med SCS)
And 2 of my cheaper ones are volcano ones - they were my favourite before the SCS, I liked them even over the space case.

We have an "American Grinder" medium, 4-piece unit. Comparing it to photos of the "good" ones online, it looks pretty quality. One piece, smooth, no burrs, nicely machined teeth that look very similar, though not exactly, like a SCS - four points, not as much inward curve (I know, just take a damn photo, right?). Anyway, I think it works pretty well, and I haven't seen any sign of it falling apart. We picked it up at a local glass shop.

I love my Santa Cruz shredder, I was double minded spending $50 on a grinder but in the grand scheme of things what does the $20 difference really mean? I rather pay an extra 20 for the best grinder. Quality is great and I get a consistent fluffy grind

I have to agree. It feels so good just feeling the SCS my hand.

I used to swear by my sharpstone but when it busted a few teeth I tried the SCS... there's no comparison. I've tried so many but the Santa Cruz has so many features from the deeper recess on the lid for more room and less spillage as well as the square fucking teeth that literally fluff the weed. And, based on the weight of the thing im pretty sure I could grind concrete in there before it broke!
