This thing completely detroyed me last night...
How far does yours stick out? My FW9 stem sticks out like 1-2mm when fully retracted, wondering if they changed how the newer stems are made to make them a little longer?
Like 2-3 mm.

Edit: I think my FW is 2mm shorter on the stem side vs the oven/battery side (so not 100% squared) and that makes the stem to stand out those 2mm

Mine sticks out a bit too.
As much as I love the idea of the retractable stem, I find it messy as soon as it's tucked away in a pocket or bag.
This was one of the reasons for creating a custom leather case for the Fw9 (and the 7 before that).
The Fw9 jackets with removable strap cover the mp to protect it from dirts. I also have a version without strap for those who like to use longer stems.

Sorry! Yeah I guess I forgot that it stuck out a tiny tiny bit, I still considered that fully retracting lol but yeah I am not a fan of doing that with mine anyway, using non-retractable

Any thoughts about ways to make the slide out stock stem a bit less slidey?

I like the stock stem in general, but it sometimes feels like it's going to slip out. And if I'm not mega-careful when I'm toking on it, I push it back in by accident. Which is then requires finger gymnastics to nudge back out because I want to keep the button pressed down with my other hand.

I've tried wrapping standard electrical tape round it, which "worked" really nicely, but the heat just makes it bunch up after a few in/outs. I'm wondering if there is any other type of tape that would work better.

Also considered trying to source a slightly thicker o-ring. I think the current one has an external diameter of 10mm and the ring thickness itself is about 2mm. So I guess I'd look for a 10mm ED with 2.5mm thickness or thereabouts.

I haven't actually tried any of these, apart from the electrical tape. I'm not a particularly "handy" person... so I want to get your suggestions before I spend $$$ and hours trying a bunch of things that don't work.

Marc had one piece of moleskin stuck in mine, I added moleskin to the other three sides. Stem is very snug now.

Interesting. I have the issue of, once it's out and it's warm it's not too difficult to retract, but it's still stiff. The issue I have most is getting it out when it's cool, I find it difficult to get it to extend sometimes. Obviously being gunked up doesn't help, I could clean it more often, but even clean it still feels resistant to sliding out.

Unless this isn't what you mean?

I actually have an idea for a stem that GVB could do, if you remind him for a custom, it would make right angle bend at the edge without any retractability so shorter connector stem as well, that way a little more length and bending should really cool vapor a lot I think, but you could also just get one of his WPA, that is a right angle to provide more cooling and that could be more comfortable to use with a hook or other glass piece? He hasn't made those in a bit
Interesting, I like both of those ideas, especially the right angle WPA. Is he active on here or Reddit? I'd love to get a right angle WPA that goes directly into my 18mm J Hook then I'd truly be in heaven.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
I have the most enjoyable sessions with the FW9. It is so good at extracting the terp flavor profile of your herb, in addition to extracting the medicine. I am solely using 320F right now, all the way through the session. I start off puffing on it lightly, like a cigar, not to get visible vapor but just to taste all the great flavors of the herb. So bright and tasty. It's like getting an ice cream cone dipped in sprinkles. Before you start diving into the ice cream, you can lick all the sprinkles off first. This vape allows those terps to hit you right in the face, with no masking of flavor.
Then I'll hold the button down and start enjoying the clouds. After 4-5 hits the clouds dissipate, along with the flavor, and the bowl is done. No need to crank the heat up higher for my purposes.

And then I'm usually too high to rinse and repeat.

Nice idea! Got a piece of felt knocking about, I could try that.

I think we haz got opposites.

Mine feels about right when it is super gunked up, and cold. But anything less than that and it's slide city - you only have to touch the mouthpiece with your lips and it drops right back in.
With my Fw7, I used o-rings to stabilize the stem.
Also a great idea. And possibly the easiest to implement, so I'm going to start with that. Thanks!

I picked the firewood 9 (bowl) up this spring in an attempt to get back into vaping after having an MFLB and a Milaana back in the day. Neither of those old vapes worked that well for me. The firewood is on par with/if not better than smoking a bowl. So much better flavor, and the device is so easy to use. I didn’t like having to stir my weed and wanted a more smoking like experience (2-5 hits and be done) and this definitely provides that. I’m considering a third party stem, are the options just High Artisan and Goodvibesboro?

Also, not necessarily firewood specific but I got the WPA just in case and am curious if getting something like the Orb v2 or a glass piece, even dry is worth it?
I enjoy the portability of the fw and often vape in the yard with the dogs. But I also like just sitting on the couch and having a bowl. It would be nice to have additional cooling instead of just the stock stem.

I like to use mine through water sometimes. A dab rig is great for it. I've used my THG Sherlock Shredder, etc, but the FW9 has a lot of power so you can go bigger too. A water pipe dry is great, a dimpled j-hook works really nicely too. The CC Prophet is also excellent.

Glad you enjoy it! I had a similar moment when I got my Firewood 7, it’s such a familiar but less fiddly ritual compared to my MFLB. So far I’ve only regularly found those 2, but at least in my opinion they don’t seem to cool too much better the stock stems, but I also don’t really notice much need for extra cooling.

I’ve been really enjoying a j hook lately with one of my other vapes and I’m strongly considering getting the wpa for that purpose. It might not need much extra cooling for my use, but I miss the feel of my friend’s old combustion bubblers and would love having the Firewood’s flavour in that form factor.

Having the stem connected to the connector so it is all one piece is really nice like in the stock stem now and GVB stems though...

Sure, but certainly not the orb, too much diffusion, especially for FW, I think load diffusion, something like the thg shredder would be great actually, or other options in the glass threads... (those orbs are not really a good bub for most vaping wet or dry imo)

How different is the FW9 experience from the TM2? I've been considering getting a TM2 and an Anvil to round out my portable collection but I'm unsure if the TM2 would really be necessary.

Quite different, TM2 is pure convection, and it's got the manual dial, glass stem system... I think of FW9 as the conduction counterpart essentially, with differences in how you set up temp and ceramic oven chamber path

I've got both, and of my 6 devices (I know, just 6, I'm an amateur), if I could only keep 2 of them, these would be my choices.

I'd hazard a guess and say that if you like the FW, you'll probably like the TM2 also. They're both capable of big rips, but I feel like the TM specialises in them, where being conduction heavy, the FW takes a tiny bit longer to get there.

So what actually makes you grab one over the other? Which one gets more use, or are the use cases a little too different in y'alls opinion?

Honestly, I mostly just pick one or the other up on a whim.

If there's any usage difference, I probably take the FW out and about more, because it's slightly more portable, and the glass stem can retract. (However there are risks associated: https://fuckcombustion.com/threads/firewood-vaporizer.9306/post-1804286)

The TM is also good for out and about because you can get a big hit fast. You get through a bowl much faster with the TM. The FW tends to be a more leisurely affair, because of the narrower stem and the conduction.

That said, the FW is also a good one for at home, because it can be more gentle and you can work your way up to the higher temps, sipping. Not that you can't do that with the TM, but it comes more naturally with the FW. Maybe because of the UI and the narrower stem?

Somehow all of this is true, even though I have managed to contradict myself mutliple times. 🔝

Yeah, just variety, both are nice out and about, but for me FW9 is more for that (even though I have not tried taking it with preloaded capsules anywhere yet) a bit more self-contained mobile that way, although TM is still super simple unloading and reloading too, it is a bit larger (especially my ideal setup with U-turn stem) so firewood more small and sleek even with my longer GVB stem... Different experiences, but yeah I think they shine in certain settings more depending on what you need it for?
