Do you like coffee?

IMO the *only* way to get decent coffee from a Keurig

I don't disagree.
I like the convenience of the k-cups, so I use those like when I'm rushing off to work on a weekday.

But in the evenings and weekends, I use the better product with the refillable cups.

One of my favourite things is what I call a ‘lightning bolt’ its a double riztretto a big spoonful of bho infused coconut oil (or a handful of caps) and a spoonful of maple syrup...hits me like a fucking hammer...I’ve paid for chemicals that have not hit me as hard! Can’t do them too often as high doses of coffee sends me a bit mental but I look forward to the times I do and I make sure I’m off work the next day!
Sounds so good....I'm definetly gonna give a shot at infusing coconut oil using one of my Bialetti Moka pots and do some espresso coconut infused maple syrup shots asap ... thanks ...

Hope you like it. I have been making these for a couple of years minus the maple syrup, then just after lockdown I was walking through a park which had a coffee van and he was selling something called a lightning bolt so I inquired what it was and when he told me I nearly fell over! (He just used plain coco oil obviously) I’d never heard of anyone else putting coconut oil in coffee not sure if it’s a common thing? Anyway I ran home made one up adding the maple syrup to try it and decided that I was adding it from now on and I was also unashamedly stealing the name!:D

Troy / 420Vapezone / @ohmygodimsohigh came up with an interesting approach to enjoy coffee:

As a cannabis and coffee lover I really enjoyed watching this. Will definitely try to have a bean in my Dynavaps sometime soon (I think I tried that once, but it didn't quite work out). Also totally agree with him saying that grinding coffee fresh for each cup (or pot) is pretty much the first thing one should do when wanting to upgrade ones coffee experience. To me that's even more important than the quality of the coffee itself; you could buy fancy and exclusive microlot coffees, but you waste so much potential when buying it preground. That is indeed very similar to weed.

Went to my favorite roastery here in Berlin today, brought home some Monsooned Malabar from India (my all time favourite), some Flores Bajawa from Indonesia, right now enjoying a cup of Volcan Azul Yellow honey-processed from Costa Rica (and some Neville's Haze). So quite a nice variety at hand. :-)

Agreed about the grinding. Coffee really goes up a notch once you start using any 'proper' method, and doing a fresh grind.

The place I buy beans from always has the roast date on the packet, and its usually mere days before I've bought it. I buy postal tho so there is always going to be a few days gap between roasting and me grinding. I would imagine if I went into the shop in York, I'd be able to get beans roasted from the day before! :)

Just perusing https://yorkemporium.co.uk/collections/coffee as I'm gonna purchase this week. I shall join you on the monsoon malabar this week :D

Agree with you on all points. My beans come from a place called Rhoadsroast. They buy green coffee beans from estates and roast them on the premises and then ship it out ASAP. My beans haven't even fully de-gassed when they arrive. So I have to be careful as to how I brew them for at least a couple days. But what a creme it produces!

As far as grinding, I've mentioned this here before that I use a cast iron grain mill. Which can be adjusted to how fine/coarse of a grind that you want. It is set to a 'flinty' coarse grind and resembles Starbucks as far as a grind type. Lately been getting the Kenya AA for around $45 for a 5lb bag. ☕ Cheaper by the pound then most conventional coffees and freshly roasted to my liking ('City roast' usually).

The Lightning bolt coffee sounds interesting. Coconut oil tends to work well as a carrier in other recipes and perhaps helps as a catalyst towards burning the more complex maple sugar. Look forward to hearing more impressions on that.

I went thru a phase of adding my infused coconut oil into my coffee. I really should start doing that again.

Then at xmas, a bit of infused whisky in the coffee, with a whole bunch of cream... and the coconut oil :)

Im good at ruining coffee sometimes :)

Re: degassing, so thats why some of the fresh bean roast improve a few days after I get them? There was one that smelled horrible when I first got it, but mellowed to a the most amazing coffee ive ever had after that. I forget what it was exactly, but it the bean that York Coffee Emporium were using as their 'xmas coffee'.

The flavour was like no other coffee I've ever had.

I guess you want the beans degassed before using them. Just found this vid that shows a range between 30 secs and 16 hrs. Didn't think it was that dramatic of a change myself until this vid. :hmm: Also beans can 'bloom' when brewing, releasing Co2 as well.

Im down with the bloom and all that stuff. I went deep when looking into the aeropress and how to make decent coffee. Not sure if I've read about time between roasting and grinding tho. I shall look. Thanks.

The place I use sells green beans too. I tried a few times but it was so much faff and hassle, and inconsistent, that it seems best to leave it to the specialist shop to do it for me :)

EDIT: @Siebter, MM ordered - https://yorkemporium.co.uk/collecti...soon-malabar-aa-coffee?variant=14405526224985

And this one to go with it - https://yorkemporium.co.uk/collections/coffee/products/panama-boquete-don-pachi-estate-coffee

@Siebter the MM is the darker bean of the two I ordered, the beans look shinier and oilier too. Its a heavy flavour, lists tobacco and liquorice on the bag. Roasted on the 24th. Crazy amount of bloom, its like its fizzing away :) But its not the usual, for me recently anyway, crema coloured bloom, its more like a dark, angry oily bloom :)

Nice stuff but a bit heavy to have more than one or two of.

Now onto trying the Don Pachi, see if I can get a handle on it :)

EDIT: Don Pachi, dab dabby, and The Old Guard...y

I like coffee too :) I have a hand grinder made in the UK with steppings. I like to drink it straight black and it's always fun to see how it will turn out this time!

Most of the time (95%) I use Aeropress. Super convinient, clean, and comes out the best for me!
If I want more than 12oz of coffee I use my Kalita Wave pour over
I also have a V60 but haven't used it much since I've been consuming 1-2 cups at a time and the Aeropress works so great for me

CBD infused coffee is a thing, too. Haven't tried and doubt it tastes the best or very effective/high enough/quality CBD, but still a fun thought

I get my beans here: Happy Mug Coffee - Pennsylvania based company. Lowest prices I've found for fresh roasted, good variety and excellent shipping

A really good YouTube channel about coffee can be found here: James Hoffman - it is like fuckcombustion but for coffee aficionados!

You import your coffee? I assume from the UK made grinder that youre UK based? Tried York Coffee Emporium?

I subbed to the coffee channel! Thanks! :)

I'm considering one of these for purchase in a few weeks times :) https://www.sageappliances.com/uk/e...C11HQl8yM0&irgwc=1&mpname=coffeeblog&cid=8631

EDIT: This coffee sounds fascinating. Aged in bourbon barrels!

@EmDeemo US based. Imported the grinder because it was top tier quality for relatively affordable prices compared to other high-end manual grinders

Wouldn't recommend ordering from him, though. From my personal experience and others' online, he does not really respond to emails/support requests/questions, so if you get a faulty one or need advice, you are kind of SOL. Really good grinders, terrible CS is Knock's motif

Yeah, that doesnt sound too good as CS tbh. I think I'll stick my hario grinder :)

That channel you posted is great. I'm getting more out of the Monsoon Malabar now Mr Hoffman reminded me that darker roasts need a finer grind! And its good to see he rates the Sage/Breville coffee machines as thats what Im considering buying :)

TIL that countries not in the Bean Belt can still grow their own coffee, Just not under the ideal climate conditions.

My understanding is Monsooned Malabar is a robusta bean, that's been allowed to "monsoon" or to be wetted in storage by the monsoon. The harvested coffee seeds are exposed to the monsoon rain and winds for a period of about three to four months, causing the beans to swell and lose the original acidity, resulting in a flavor profile with a practically neutral pH balance.

illy coffee from Italy is a robusta blend, too. Normally, many desired coffees are arabicas. Robustas can add the crema to fine espressos. I've used Malabar Gold with great success.

It's my understanding that less expensive grinders produce inconsistent grinds - some of the broken beans will be larger fragments, some smaller. So some particles will overextract, some underextract, etc, which may have a huge outcome on the resulting taste of the cup brewed. Despite this, my enjoyment of coffee hasn't increased or decreased since getting this grinder :p coffee making can be really complicated and full of variables if you dive deep enough... between temps, grind sizes, bean choice, brew method, timing of the brew, how you pour water on the brew, the type of filter you use... so many! It's can be daunting but also a lot of fun to experiment

Here is a useful "coffee compass" to troubleshoot and tweak everyone's brews:

Oh, totally looking forward to your impressions – and I hope for you they roast it fair, in my opinion that's when MM really shines. ☀

The finer grind was my issue, not the coffee. I was being a bad workmen and blaming my tools/beans! :)

The MM is absolutely fucking delightful. Loving it now. Beautiful stuff. I also gone from drinking multiple coffees a day, down to only drinking about two or three cups max. I guess I'm getting full satisfaction now and not needing more caffeine :)
