got a new ascent direct from dv. like the size, fit, finish and handfeel. the led screen is shitted up with fingerprints and scratched but i remember some of you guys reported that before and it won't be a biggie if all functions well. thought i might have a refurb but no R in the serial # ---found just three other issues, first two probably nothing but third one may be serious.
first two things involve the bowl, there is a tiny white object stuck in the upper rim of the bowl, feather-like, so tiny and wispy tweezers won't even grab it and i can't grab it between my fingers to remove. why should that be stuck in a brand new vape? i circled it in yellow in the first pic..also look at the bowl area, why is it crapped up with stuff on a new vape? didn't try to clean it yet.

and i was going to charge it up when i shined a flashlight into the charging port i noticed the tip of the charging plug in the ascent looks corroded/deteriorating...is that tip supposed to be cut at all, would have expected that part to be rounded, smooth and shiny. was not comfortable charging it up looking like that... any ideas guys? tia

That almost looks like it had been used? That looks like herb stain residue. I could be wrong? It should look shiny new. I wonder if it could be paint?

I would try to remove the stuck thing whatever it is. For the particles on the bowl silicone, I know this material can tend to attract dust when new, so I'm not too worried but you will need to clean that with ISO no matter what, like with all new vaporizers.

The stains on the ceramic shouldn't be there though, tried cleaning them?

On that last pic I can't see your corroded jack plug. Just checked mine and it's not round and smooth, rather more like a screw tip... but it doesn't look corroded. Is the yellowish thing on the grill a reflexion? It almost looks like glue... or is this precisely the part you say is corroded?

i have tried to remove it. it is so superfine it can't be gripped....it's like shredded dental floss or the stuff inside of rope....bowl like i said i didn't try to clean yet, wondered if anyone had seen same. those two things i figure i can work around. i put a new pic up and circled the jack plug, sorry i can't get better pic, it is so darn small you can hardly see it. the other yellow area and reflection are from flash.

Well then don't worry too much. Just clean it thoroughly and put in on charge. If in a few months the jack is completely corroded you could consider using your warranty. Otherwise it might just be a small defect in the nickel/chrome plating process.

On a completely unrelated (and off- topic) note, and since we both recently posted pictures of our hands, did you see the talk at the recent Chaos Computer Club conference? The guy was able to get finger prints from a high resolution picture of the hands of some german minister... I'm not being paranoid, but if it can be used to fake biometric ID, it's good enough to make you lose your online anonymity (provided they have you on record of course, but nowadays with modern passports and ID cards, most of use are...)

That power connector is OK. Mine looks that way too. I'm sure you've seen others (on other equipment or devices), and most are nice solid pins with a rounded end, since they are made from solid stock. The one on the Ascent is a hollow tube. At the very end notches are cut out and the resulting points are folded over to approximate a rounded tip for ease of insertion. While the solid type is far more common, I have seen the hollow ones like the Ascent uses before, and have seen no more problems with the hollow than the solid style. Just an engineering choice - possibly one of availability in the size and form factor required.

I love my ascent. I made a big newbie mistake by vaping without any dry burns and did not clean the silicone. I used alcoho wipe and cleaned it up after I tasted something nasty, like burnt silicone. I would ask for a new one. You spent a few hundred, you should not have to worry about your product.

Pay attention, guys, the man is wise. Rolled pins are quite common, I'm not sure I agree with "the solid type is far more common" as I have a lot of examples mixed into my collection of similar connectors.

It's a straight engineering decision, increased tooling costs against lower material usage. I'd say more common on larger diameter pins? For sure nothing to worry about.

You may be right, especially regarding more modern gear. Of course now I'll be paying closer attention every time I see one.

That white is insulating material or sum thing you gasket is planet way better that mine was since new almost looks like it's shifter one side the gasket Hans over my bowl other side their a lil gap and I can see that white material in their hope I hear from them one day in the new year about that and the gasket been a while now

So I've been using my inhalater capsul to fill my ascent less mess Seems to fill the chamber medium grind and no pack fluffy flyffly draw 5 times at 350. Jump to 395! Finish 410 to kill it !!!

So far ,my 1st time out w/ glass flowers not good ~ used oval shape screen over

oven floor ,then layered ( 3 layers ) 3 x 2 = 6 screens ( 3 center layer ,3 thumbtack

top ) ~ maybe too many screens ,or too large load ( 0.5 g + 0.35 g wax ) ??

CONS : burn't ABV ,charred oven walls ,broken glass flowers ,not looking good ~

Me prefers bottom screen ,2 glass flwers @ thumbtack top ,then covered w/ oval

screen w/ smooth edge ( no interference w/ glass filter )

EDIT: since there is still a positive vibe towards GF ,will experiment w/ less pcs

While both are glass, from a thermal standpoint they are very different. If the goal is to take up space in the bowl (smaller loads) the flat version will do that but has very little surface (and much of that out of contact inside the bores) to aid vapor production. The flowers, OTOH, were selected (over beads and the like) for exactly that reason.....lots of surface area for the mass, lots of contact, lots of vapor. You can actually get more vapor (bigger clouds) with less bud by correctly using the flowers. Not so, I think, other shapes. For sure not as effectively.

Try the flowers, I believe everyone who has has found success?

I'm not at all sure we're interpreting "motion" right. At least not the same as the author. That is I'm not sure there's an accelerometer in there to sense motion. Extra expense and calibration issues I'd think. How do you separate say sitting on a moving car seat from a stoner watching a movie?

Rather I think 'change' makes more sense? That it 'it shuts of XX minutes since the last change'. It should be easy enough to sort out with a few tests, but my first one (setting a time to shake it every 5 minutes) didn't stop shutdown so I decided it didn't mean what I thought and stopped testing.

From some of the early manufacturer comments, and one of the pre-release videos, there was specific mention of two shut-down timers: One is the user set timer, and the other a "motion" sensor. (Three is one included the user-settable multi-step temp program.)

There was some discussion about this two-ish years ago, then I haven't really thought about it since. When in use, mine never leaves my hand for 20-40 min, and that hand is constantly going back and forth from rest to mouth. I suspect the only one I have run into is the time based shut-off.

As you point out "motion" might mean a lot of things in the context of a non-finalized feature in an unreleased device. It is easier to communicate it as a "motion" sensor when one is looking to communicate a result.

Also, the video I recall was at least 6 months prior to the product release. There are anticipated features and then there are finalized features.

I will note that both shut-offs are in the vaporpedia article, which was composed before the product was in peoples hands (or, more specifically, MY hands ).

I suggest you check them out. I routinely use them and am not trying to economize on bud. You can just get vapor easier, up until it's all gone of course.

With a thermal conductivity k of 1, I wonder why you recommend using glass " flowers ".

Diamonds have a thermal conductivity k of 1000. Wink. Wink.

On a side note, I was tempted to use synthetic "diamonds", Cubic Zirconiums as spacers, but learned that they are thermal insulators. One way to tell the difference between real diamonds, and the flawless synthetics
made today.

I get 20 minutes of vapor out of less than 0.1g (maybe 1/4 of the bowl size) by tamping the load and doing multiple temperature levels. Did you fix your vapor/air ratio? (you just received your GonG so I assume you didn't)

hey all.
well 2 out of 3 ain't bad...
was able to get the white material out of the bowl rim with some flat nosed tweezers.
cornwalis thinks it is insulation...glad it is gone.
was able to connect to charger and charged for 12 hours.
only thing i struck out on was trying to get the brown stains in the bowl clean...
iso on Qtips twice didn't do anything, will probably leave for now and see if the
upcoming burn-offs remove it. really want to like this vape.
as always thank you to all you fellow fc'ers for all your help and advice, it always
helps to have lots of brains working on a problem and this forum rocks at that!

What does it mean to fix my vapor/air ratio? I hear that I can sip straight from the gong too, meaning more vapor less air? The original glass stems worked well for me but assume the gong will give me more vapor

Ya almost feels like Teflon Sum of the stains I've never gotten out I took a wooden skewer and sharpend it down pointy and dampen it it warm the oven up to clean that little raise area hardest part to clean my stir too drop my last one in the truck can't find it so I used a peice of thick coper wire from a old cable tv wire put half open loop on it so it catcher that buddy mouth peice and slides in that hole and cleans you're screen holes dam good And I can fit like 3 or 4 in that slot. Made one for my inhalator too so can pack it tighter looks like and round ecig burne and fits perfect in capsule going to try bend one to the shape of the ascent bowl to tamp things down
