Is there a certain type of plumbers tape to look for at the hardware store?
White one, also called Teflon.

There are 3 kids of 'plumber's tape' you're likely to find in the hardware store. A long metal strip with holes for hanging pipes, thick black (usually) sticky back tape for protecting buried pipes and narrow (typically half inch) very thin ribbon of PTFE (Teflon) with no adhesive. The last is what you want. It usually comes on small plastic spools with covers:

I don't know if there is anything "special" about it. I just used what I had on hand, but it is just the standard white plumbers tape. A much better buy if you buy a bigger roll, but how much will you use?

Yup, that's the stuff!!! Kind of hard to get the wrap going, since there is no adhesive. It may save you some aggravation or some glass though.

The usual technique is to start the wrap at an angle 'from above' (outside the joint area) holding it with your thumb until you get the first wrap on (why you start at an angle....). Then a turn or two more times (never more than 3 layers over threads) and put tension on the last turn. It's the slight stretch that gets it to hold in place until you can put it together.

BTW, the pros put their thumbnail down over the end and just rip the tape off, showy and effective. And easier than fumbling with scissors and the roll unrolls itself across the table and onto the floor..... Also BTW you can make emergency valve stem seal repairs (where water comes up next to the shaft when you open the valve?), just roll a length of the ribbon into a 'string' and wrap it up under the packing nut.

Is the vortex really worth it? How much longer is it than the stock stems? Is it better than the stock stem? Looking to get the best out of my solo.

The Vortex is around the same price as the PVHES mouthpieces, $25. You don't need it but it's a nice piece to have. It's about an inch longer than the stock straight stem and slightly cools the vapor a little more. I've noticed its a thicker glass, probably a good thing. I do take an extra minute to heat it up.

It's not a quick way to enjoy your flowers, it's more of a take your time and enjoy, savor the quality of your vapor flavor.

This stem has the channeled slits in the sides for better airflow. There is a vortex pocket between the herb and the airflow stem section.

I've been just using this stem since I received it. I only use another stem if I want to sandwhich wax. I don't want to get this all dirty as wax tends to do.

Just another way to enjoy our fav vaporizer. As of now it only comes in a straight stem. It was worth the $25 to me. I bought two.

EDIT
Wow 1300 pages!!!!!

I have to say , i think i have some VAS like you called it, i purchased my 2nd solo , i've got an EQ and waiting to my indica replacement , but im combusting yet, sorry , i hope to say fuck combustion early with this equipament, i tried to stop combustion but sometimes i had to charge the solo and back to combustion, i can use while charging but if i use it , it don't charge fast and have to go to sleep! So while one is charging i can use the other one or my EQ, the reason why im not using the EQ always is cause im waiting for ddave adapter , i think with cyclone bowl you have to load with lot of material , so you use more and i don't like this way.
Im alone in this world ( my little world ) trying to stop smoking and is hard when all the people around are smoking ...i'll win!!

Some of you may have already figured this out but with my solo I have found that while taking a long, steady draw, I slowly rotate the vaporizer in my hand until I hear the change in airflow, the hits are vastly improved.

Even a low level heat like #4 produces big clouds once the airflow increases. Try it out and just slowly spin it. I can literally hear the shift in airflow with mine.

When I vape I shine a light to my stem and *see* the flow of vapor :)

I don't hear anything as slow pulls are near silent for me. (Maybe what slow means varies from person to person..)

Also rotate it too--mainly thinking it'll cook the material more evenly :D I may be wrong lol. But whatever

My pulls are slow but the shift in airflow can definitely be heard. I'm very pleased with this purchase and my friends have grown to love it. He's thinking about ordering one soon. Word of mouth sells have to be very successful with this unit.

Do you recommend the regular one or the shorty? Any milky clouds? Does it vape the herb evenly? Thanks!

Help. How do i change the filter of ed solo stem..i just can't seem to figure how to do that safely

Ideally you need a tool called 'snap ring pliers' like these:
http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-3578-U...ower-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1422901185&sr=1-2

With the tips in the holes on the ring, you rig it so closing the handles moves the tips together (it can be set up either way on this type). The makes the ring smaller so it slips out.

If you're careful you can catch one hole with a scribe or ice pick and 'screw it out' (tends to scratch up the bore of course).

IMO buying the tool is the way to go. Hardware and auto parts stores often carry them.

Ever notice how good friends are always swapping stuff??:

The silver cap screws down better when used with the "O" ring and either Solo, so I've been using it this way with the bubbler.

i have the regular they didn't have the shorty available when I ordered. You can always make a domed screen. It vaporized the herb even enough. I usually get 2 - 10 min sessions. Sometimes I give it an extra stir after the first session, but not always.

Yes it produces milky flavorful vapor clouds.

So I couldn't give you any info about the shorty. It would depend on how long your sessions are and how big a bowl you like. The shorty would be about half the size of a regular stock bowl.

You could always buy 1 shorty and 1 regular and see which is best. When I buy glass stems I usually buy at least 2 at a time, with the cost of shipping as it is. It's cheaper to buy at least 2 because you know it's going to break eventually. I don't like being without a fav stem either.

Thanks.. I'm convinced!! You are right.. I could always use a domed screen so why get a shorty. I'll order as soon as they have it.
