p.s. If I'm remembering the FW 7 firmware update, I think this was simply to adjust what temps the user/each setting "thinks" are being aimed for, vs. changing the heating profile/capacity, e

That is correct, original FW7 launched with the same settings, but each one was tuned 30°? lower in the final production, in total calibration, numbers remained the same

My unit (beta) is clearly underpowered, I'm at 440°F for a roast that can't go to combustion. Less powerfull than my Fw7. A come back to Marc is planned.
Should we be combusting at 440F with the device? If that’s the case I guess mine is underpowered as well. It’s a heavy/dark roast but so far no combustion at 440. Though lately I’ve been sticking to 380.

How old is your battery? I'm noticing a difference in power for sure in one of my older batteries. Thinking of tossing an old P28A's and picking up a couple P30B's... Unless someone can recommend a better batt?
They are almost new.
I knew all along that my version was underpowered because it was shipped just before Marc made the modification for the others. So I think the problem should be solved now.

A priori, we are at the combustion limit at these temperatures so the avb should be heavy/dark roasted.

This is interesting! It certainly could explain the difference in reported experiences here. I was not in the early adopter list and bought my FWX from the drop on February 25th. I wonder if those who have a weaker heater are from before that?

The glass in mine keeps slipping out as well. I have to reset it each time I close the lid.

Also, I'm a lefty and have been using my thumb on the button, and am constantly burning the shit out of my pinky on the side glass, esp if it has slipped out a bit.
Mine hasn’t broken but it’s never felt solid. I’ve been concerned with it breaking and don’t really see the purpose of it. I would love to see it replaced with a piece of ceramic instead. If I could get a piece of the material of whatever the chamber/bowl is made of, that would be a neat experience. I’m curious what it would mean for the oven. Also curious about what the glass is doing. Is it ceramic? Should it be shattering this easily? Is it porcelain?

Idk. Just thinking out loud. Sorry. Rambling, mostly.

Also (hence why I quoted it) I, too am left handed and have had a similar issue with burning myself on the dang thing. I’m not sure ceramic would help the situation, on second thought.

Got my X two days ago, but using it nonstop. I love the flavor and vape quality, but the fit and finishi of the sliding bowl cover, still seems like a work in progress. The glass catches on the ceramic of the bow area that sticks up a bit above the wood, Every time I try to slide on the cover I have to bend it up a little to get the glass over the lip. Worried that the cover is going to break or at least the glass will pop out.

Other than that, I love the size and I think the performance is WAY beyond the 7, 8 or 9.

Here's some pics, the last one shows the "lip" that the glass gets hung up on
In what way do you think the performance is better than the previous models? I'm only just learning about this new version and this sounds promising!

Email out from Marc this morning addressing glass window and storage installation issues Solid response:

Thanks for purchasing the FAT X!

You may have noticed from personal use or from social media posts that some of the glass lids are chipping around the edges and possibly coming loose. I am working on a slight design change to the glass part to prevent this from happening. I should be getting the new parts either this week or next. Once I get the new glass parts I will evaluate whether or not they fix the issue, then determine whether the part can be replaced by the user, or will need to be sent in. With the current design I can't recommend the user replacing the window because it is really tricky to do right, but hopefully the new design will be easier. Either way I can provide a mailing label for you to mail it back for replacement if you prefer.

There is a small chance that the new design won't work for some unknown reason. In that case the backup plan is to change that part from glass to ceramic, which would definitely fix the issue. I'll keep you posted on the new parts once I receive and test them.

Some users have also had problems installing the storage parts. Normally this wouldn't be an issue because those parts would be pre-installed by me, but that is obviously not the case with the early units that shipped without storage. If you can't get the storage installed correctly let me know and I'll send you a mailing label so I can install them. In that case I will fix the glass at the same time.

Finally, please let me know if you paid for storage parts but did not receive them in the mail.

Thanks,
Marc

Also, Marc responded to my inquiry about the FW9. He “might” do one more batch before they go off market. The units currently for sale on the Firewood Aromatech site might just be the last bunch of 9s available new.

I’m grateful to see a very clear and rather quick response from him on this before it became wide spread. I actually popped on to see if anyone had posted about it!

There are pros and cons to getting small batch “boutique” devices. Getting emails directly from the designer/builder/owner/CEO/cust support explaining what’s going on and how he plans to address the issue in a timely manner? That’s a definite pro and it’s why I keep buying these vapes.

Fairly priced, well made and well supported. I’m not sure what more a person could reasonably expect in a vape.

I mean, I guess it doesn’t know how to fold a fitted sheet, but I’m in my mid-40s and I haven’t figured that out either so….

Ok so yeah I can definitely confirm my heater is a little underpowered or maybe the temperature reader just isn’t reading correctly or a mixture of both.

FW7 on 2nd setting with default temp settings (I never messed with them because I was nervous of fucking it up back then) can toast a bowl to a nice coffee brown. Unregulated can combust(did not take it there or close but it has the ability easy)

FWX on setting 3 at 440f cannot combust. Using 15 seconds preheat time and puffing on it like a cigar for one long 1 minute continuous draw we got a roast like ( ) and then emptying out completely and reloading and running unregulated with a 5 second preheat and puffing on it like a cigar for 45 seconds we got a roast like ( ) and I honestly do not know if that would be capable of combusting as vapor production at that point has petered off despite there still being uncooked herb. Gonna e-mail this to Marc.

Thanks to the people for the tips about pre-heat and maybe I’m hitting it wrong. I thought of both of those before I came here to see if anyone else said anything about having and underpowered heater, but I do appreciate the ideas given. I’ll report back when I’ve heard back from Marc.

Been a Firewood user since the 4, love what Marc designs. I just received my FATX, feels and looks lovely in my hand but I have a problem. I’ve tried a few different batteries, tried all the pre-set heating levels but whenever I press the button to start the heater the unit rapidly buzzes at a consistent rate and will continue to do so until I take my finger off the button (no heat is produced). I’ve contacted Marc about this but has anyone else’s FATX done the same?

If I am understanding correctly, it vibrates continuously and never heats? That sounds broken to me. My FWX operates just like the manual. On long press, I get haptic feedback at the start of a long press, another buzz when it is up to temperature.

For anyone having issues installing the storage compartment - I was having the same issue, which the storage cover wouldn’t close all the way. DO NOT try to FORCE It closed with cover. You will most likely damage the glass with too much pressure. Instead, use the included tool to push the tray back out (from stem hole) and then continue to pull it out from the other side. Once out, you will see 2 bends in the metal. You want to slightly increase the 2 bends, one at a time. Using a flat surface and the included tool assisted me with this. Now when you reinsert, it should slide all the way and allow the storage cover to slide all the way closed.
Just wanted to emphasize this for the early adopters. I was about to start grinding the metal storage base lip before reading this. Thanks @Kaptan!
I think the issue came from the base metal getting flattened out in the paper envelope it shipped in.

Yeah, I had a loud clicking sound, not the normal kind of noise that the heater makes and Marc had me send it back. It very noticeably not right and like you're seeing, clearly doesn't produce heat.

As I sit here not being able to install the storage base, what good is us sending it to Marc to install when we have to be able to remove and reinstall it as part of the cleaning process...?

What is the issue? Is the lip is the storage not allowing the lid to close?

I had to fool around with bending it to take up some of the excess length. It was a very close fit. It could definitely cause a problem with the glass if you aren't careful.

Oh yes I’m very aware of this issue as I posted this to assist anyone having issues. Might be worth pasting here again as well for anyone receiving the parts.

Ya I believe same as fw7? Also out of stock 😭

I don't believe he will be restocking FW7, and this might be the final restock for FW9, need to custom order those now that the X is taking over... Unless he makes some clear
