Underdog Log Vapes

My avatar is a painting by Alex Grey that I believe was privately commissioned ( not by me!) I'd love to find a better photo of it.

I'd clarify that the only reason you'd need the VVPS is if you can't get it hot enough. If it is running TOO hot, moving the screen farther away from the heating element should solve the issue.

I just had a quick look. Not sure if this is a upgrade over what you have, but this was the largest version I could find on the interwebs. It's called 'guitar man' btw.

HappyTrails: not to long ago the twigs and other smaller pieces were considered the hottest, but I'm not sure if that's still the case now with those mysterious new cores.

A variable PSU is a nice thing to have nevertheless.

You don't need to worry about warranty though, Dave always takes care of unhappy customers and won't rest till you are satisfied

Dave told me they all run very simmilar because of the insulated core. I found that to be a pretty accurate statement. I don't notice much of a difference between my twig and king even though the king is much bigger.

Thanks for helping to clarify. I assume then that if it vaporizes, but not at the temp you want, you are on your own to buy a VVPS as it would not be warrantied based on user preference? If that is the case, is there a model type that runs hotter (twigs/logs/dif wood)? BTW, is that Houser in your avatar?

Big differences between the twigs and the fatter pieces are:
-When using with standard bong (not them fancy aquavapes) and you have to hold and invert the UD during the hit, a small twig is much more manageable than a bigger heavier piece. Unless you have giant hands

-The less wood, generally the less time its going to take to heat up. So that's handy if you want to drive it over to a friends. Also, even the twigs themselves vary in wood thickness, my first twig was rated @ 15mins.
[note, most log vapes benefit from being left on longer than the minimum warm up time to get to the max temp]

One thing to consider, thicker wood can also potentially make it more "resilient" to wear & tear or a nasty fall.

As usual it looks like all you UDs have things well in hand.. since there don't appear to be any questions that need answering by me I'll just go make more UDs. You guys rock.

I would also say that a VVPS may not be needed with an UD, especially on the US power grid. I have always thought that the stock UD PS was perfect for the UD. Dave says it puts out about 13.25 - 13.75V when under load. I bought a VVPS mainly for my HI and have also used it with the UD. The thing is the perfect spot on the VVPS for the UD is 13.3 volts for me. So it doesn't really matter which I use. My UD is one foggy breathed four legged beast

Haha, you're fast ma'am

Those look great, are that 9 pieces of bamboo in there?
Yeah, like all bamboo lumber, it's a composite of multiple pieces pressed together. Looks pretty neat from the side, huh? :D

Thanks for the comments UDs - looks like I'll be making more single stem caddies for sure!

Dave, my poor little bullet died last night :(

I suddenly heard a buzzing sound coming from it when I was just starting a new bowl. I started taking a hit but then got scared and unplugged it. When I tried to measure the resistance this morning there was like 2000k ohm resistance. Something must have come loose I guess. It was expected but not this quick. In all honesty I was hoping to stretch it indefinitely, but at last.

So, pry bottom loose and solder something? I need to finish this bowl dude :myday: ;)

Do you think you could finish the Blue Mahoe piece this weekend? I had some extra cash coming in so I'm all ready for that bad boy.

My god, I'm gonna be using a Solo for the next few weeks *shivers*

& I need to stock up on Butane for mah Vapocane.

This has been a while

the buzzing noise is weird, I have a PD wich used to have issues(untill dave sent me a new resistor wit my dog, but I now barey use the PD anymore, but nice to have as backup or to take elsewhere while my dog sits safely and secure at home), and if something was loose I never heard buzzing, it just didn't get warm anymore.
but I've recently seen some pics of broken resistors in the PD-thread, so maybe your problem is in the resistor and that's why it's buzzing?

Idk man, I'd have to open it up to be sure I guess. I might if I get some guidance from our lead-dog, but a part of me just wants to keep it intact to for sentimental reasons, not sure yet.

It sounded like the sound you can get when something short-circuits, like sparks flying between to leads or something. But I couldn't see anything looking through the screen in the heater port. You'd think the fuse (aardlek schakelaar) would have blown if it short circuited, but noting like that happened. Perhaps I was just in time? I'm not sure how long the buzzing was going on however. I could only hear it when I put my Dog close to my face to hit it. For all I know it was already going on for half an hour already at that time.

Oh no dude!

Based on the buzzing sound and the resistance reading it sounds like the resister has kicked the bucket. Definitely doesn't sound like a short.

I'll finish the Mahoe piece today and get it ready for you, I'll send you an email with details.

Look on the bright side, now the Solo gets some attention haha.. ;)

I don't think the fuse(aardlekschakelaar) would go off, when I was messing around with that PD pandora I mentioned, I also had a short once(in the cord close to where it went into the PD), the adaptor started making a buzzing sound, later it began spewing sparks(a cheap adaptor from dealextreme.com).
another adaptor must've had a fuse because it stopped working.
and in both cases the aardlekschakelaar didn't shut off. wich is logical now I think about it, now I'm typing this I remember we once got a lesson about the aardlekschakelaar with physics in highschool, I don't really remember the schematics and how exactly it worked but the principle is that it measures the difference between current going in and out of the house. as soon as current leaks away, it shuts off. but if you just have a short circuit, no current leaks away, that only happens when it leaks to the ground trough your body or the grounding in apliances that have grounding.

well, geluk bij een ongeluk, you get the excitement of waiting for the new dog to arrive and it will be even better when you bring life in it for the first time

Great Scott!
My god, I'm gonna be using a Solo for the next few weeks *shivers*

Man if you were local I'd lend you one of my dogs just to avoid that :uhoh: haha.

I hope you get this taken care of soon. Did you run it at higher voltages or anything? I'm fairly confident that higher voltages for TOO LONG is going to loosen these bad boys up. Luckily I am happy with the Jester at 12v as my only home vape. For pressed kief I do short bursts of 13v IF I insist on using the jester. My twig runs so much hotter than the Jester that I can simply use that at 12v for hotter hits. Maybe I'll get a collection and arrange them from colder to hotter and make and ABV rainbow :brow:

Dave just wanted to report in that the Jester which has been run 24/7 for quite a long time now is running 100% still. No issues to report and it gets the job done every single session with perfectly consistent results that I've come to expect. I view my King's Jester as a precision machine with everything literally perfect and no surprises.

...And then there's the twig with the prototype core  The most accurate way to describe this one is "crazy little fucker". I plug it in and start grinding a small nug. By the time I grind that nug and pack it in the stem it is already able to produce whispy hits on my car adapter. Give it one more minute and we are talking thick smoke looking clouds of clean pure vapor. Give it about 7 min+ with the car running the whole time and you've reached a temp that will create black abv without combusting after 2 hits on a fully packed large spaced stem. This is a 1 hitter quitter setup for every person I have met up to this point. Most people hit it when it is hot, but everyone who hit it after a 7+ minute warmup was unable to take a second hit. This is likely because it vapes the entire bowl in the first 2 hits. The hits after that I've determined to be pointless based on the ABV. I've never once combusted in it, and usually unplug it right after a bowl since there is only a 1-3 minute warmup time at most with this thing to where I prefer it. That is fantastic for what I use it for...a car vape. When I say the ABV is black think solo on 6 black. I'd say 7, but at 7 the ABV in both of mine and my friends solos was black and crispy which made it feel like plastic. It never got that strange texture thing going on that I had with the solo on max temp. I always thought black meant combustion so I usually just stop hitting when its dark brown, but every single time I hit it that hot to where the ABV is black, there are no signs of combustion at all, plus I'd imagine it would continue smoking if that were the case.

I think they are an absolutely perfect duo and thought it was time to pop in with an updated review and description of how they are both used. 100% satisfied as always.

I think the current also spikes when there's a short circuit Djonko, but in these cases our power supplies probably take the first beating and the switch will never register it.

To the English folks who don't have a clue what we're talking about, I just found that it's called a
residual current circuit breaker or RCCB in English :)

And thanks for trying to comfort me, but I rather do the waiting with a warm pup at hand to be honest
I am lookig forward to trying the new insulted core though, you still have the old one in yours I believe?

Thanks Darkrom, lmao. I had no doubt at all you wouldn't understand my sentiment though ;)

But to answer your question, yes, I completely ass-rapped this one. No fault with the Dog itself. It started with the couch stuffing first which already loosened the core within weeks, and then on top of that I used a unregulated PSU that turned out to spike over 15,7V under load which I didn't find out until after weeks of use. It was on that PSU as well when it died yesterday, even though I had a dimmer switch in the loop as well this time. My variable PSU started buzzing as well last weekend so I stopped using that one for now. Still figuring out what to do with it, I have been offered warranty on it today but it's probably cheaper to fix it myself then have it shipped back and forth to the UK. I'm still not a 100% certain which part it is that is defective though... :|

Thanks for the update on your pack (can you call two dogs a pack?) too, can't wait to get my hands on the latest design myself

What is the best way to connect the silicone tubes to a 14mm GonG? Would this work or is there a better option? Wonder if the Doggette has one in the works...(hint, hint ;) )? What do you all do?

OhTheAgony

Yeah, that'll work. It may restrict the airflow somewhat though. You could just take a knife and cut a tapered end to a thick silicone stem as well.

If you want a angeled one you could also just get a SSV/DBV waterpipe adapter. They come in both 14 and 18mm so you wouldn't need the reducer, plus they come in different colors as well if you're in to that. You can get them on ebay for around 15 dollars I believe, but vapornation and several other shops sell them too, as well as 7thfloor guys themselves of course.

I just took an exacto knife and cut away the last cm. or so of silicone to make it somewhat tapered. It looks kinda shitty (hack job by me) but it works well enough. That adapter you listed should do the trick nicely as well.

@ djonk & OTA - you guys are right, a shorted UD (or other similar electrical devices) won't trip a household fuse (we usually call them a "circuit breaker" or just a "breaker" fyi) for reasons djonk pointed out. Depending on the power supply being used though a short can either ruin it, blow a replaceable (or non-replaceable) fuse internal to the power supply or on expensive power supplies trip a fuse that will automatically reset after a while.

@ darkrom - thanks for the followup dude, I think "crazy little fucker" is a good name for your ProtoDog. ;)

@ OTA (again) - I'm kind of surprised your Dog lasted as long as it did considering the abuse you put it through haha.. you need to find his mummified remains a place of honor on a bookshelf or something.

@ happyTrails - I'll let someone else more expert re: the glass answer your question, probably best that way lol.

That's all for now, nothing terribly exciting to report. Working working working, just shipped out 10-12 packages now back to work work work. :borg:

I gave it an honorary place between my other vapes and vaping equipment on top of my computer case next to my desk Dave, it's still within arms-length. Still contemplating having you ship me a replacement core with it's predecessor so I can bring it back to life though ;)

I'm not completely sure, but I believe I have the core wich was new untill the newest core became the new core.
I'm wondering btw... I'm now usiing the stock power suply for a while, wich serves me well enough(still have the plan to get a variable once, but no hurry), but I still notice that it sometimes seems hotter then at other times.
I think I notice a dip in how war the unit feels around 6 and a while after it, and around 1-3 at night it gets hotter. but I thought this power suply was regulated and so it should always stay on the same voltage?
so is there something I'm not getting right, or must I be imagining things?

few days ago I had a stem with hash wich first gave an amount of a bit subpar hits. then it didn't really give any vapor anymore altough I thought it was a bit quick, I threw in a bit more(about the same as was already in there), took the few hits needed to make it softer and stir it to smaller pieces, but then set the stem away. this was in a dip in temp.
then later, probably 2 at night or so, it felt hotter and I picked up that stem again(vaped weed with the glass stem in between, that's why it was set away for so long), and right away that first hit was one of the thickest hashhits I've had with my dog.
so to me that indocates I'm not just imaging that it feels hotter sometimes.
