Very helpful having those pictures. I feel like I am going to spend hour after hour trying out all of the different combinations :science: On second thought, I shouldn't have asked for the pictures, I want a HI even more now...

looks like my job here is done, hehehe

I have a question for those of you using the all-glass turbo tubes - Does the heat port of the HI insert all the way in to the all-glass turbo tube until the end of the tube comes to a complete stop? Or are you supposed to hold the all-glass turbo tube over the heat port without inserting it all the way down?

I'm curious because I read earlier in this thread that the end of the all-glass turbo tube is drilled down 1/2 inch to accept the heat port. I'm not sure how long the heat port is on the HI, but I expect it's close to the same length (1/2 inch?). If that's so, you couldn't fit any herb on top of the screen without it coming into physical contact with the heat port, unless you were holding it away a bit.

Am I missing something here?

The HI core does fit inside the tube. But I just barely insert it to make seal and hit. Push down further if u need more heat or angle it to let air to mix in for a cooler hit.

Holy shit did u guys know Ruffles makes chili cheese flavored chips. That shit blew my mind. :)

Ok I think I see what you are saying and it's pretty much what I thought - You insert the HI heat port onto the end of the all-glass turbo tube. But you dont push it all the way into the tube or make contact with the herbs. Right-O?

That is correct. Well atleast in my case. :)

Thanks for posting all the tube photos bOObs. I love how versatile the tubes are for the HI. Each one performs just a little bit differently. Now you can see why I have so many. It is a lot of fun creating the different combinations. That is a very beautiful packed bowl. All glass is sure nice.

The silicone turbo tubes have a bowl that is normally about 5/8" deep. They have an adjustable depth. I only went 1/2" deep with the all glass turbo tubes. The idea is that you start with the HI center tube just into the glass or silicone bowl. The deeper the bowl, the more you are likely to fill it. The more a tube is filled, the more likely it is to combust due to low air flow. The material will get smaller in volume and you will be able to put the HI center tube deeper into the roasting bowl. The heating element is another 1/2" or so down into the center tube so it won't hurt if the HI center tube does contact the material in the roasting bowl. The open design of the HI lets you just turn it over and tap out any material that may have fallen in.

Thanks for posting the photo J R R Tokin'. I have been having good luck with the dark cherry wood. The wood tube is for the HI, but I have also used it with the TT. Just hold the end of the glass tube against the end of the TT center tube.

I made another tweak to my HI core today (sorry it didn't make it into yours JRR). The bottom washer is now mechanically fastened to the outer stainless sleeve in addition to the center tube. They are an integral unit. There is no soldering or welding of the stainless. It is a very rigid connection.

That's not a problem at all. Not expecting you to make constant improvements would have been foolhardy of me! :)

Does this affect any potential loosening?

The wood will still determine if there will be any loosening, but this change should allow the core to be reset by tapping on the center tube rather than the outer sleeve. Still need to install one and try it. The center tube will no longer spin free if the wood becomes loose and allows the outer sleeve to move. Heat should always tighten the wood again.

Alan - if possible, I'd love to see some pics of the HIs you make out of Ed's pieces. Specifically, the various stages from block to final unit. I'm sure others here would dig such wood-making porn, but I realize you're very busy so please don't feel obligated.

Cheers, my man!

I have been meaning to take some before and after photos. Fun to see a sometimes ugly hung of wood transform into a wooden jewel. The wood that Ed sent me just happens to be gorgeous already. It should really be stunning. Feels like there is a Ferrari in my garage, but I have to wait to drive it. I must have patience. Its day will come.
