I've started doing this recently, and I am about to make my third batch. Got a question about soy lecithin!

When is the best point to put the lecithin in? Is it only effective when it cooks into the oil, or does that happen at room temperature, too?

I've only done it one way, but that doesn't mean diddley. I always put it in while the oil is heated in the Mason Jar (or MB Machine). But heck if I know that is the best way. Good question.

Wow, so much amazing information on here! I'm officially jumping into doing my own cooking and haven't had any real experience doing it "the right way". Any suggestions on websites, etc? I've looked up a lot about making your own butter in a pan, using the Magic Butter Machine and some other extraction machines, but I can't find a resource that really lays out what the best way is. Honestly, all the information is overwhelming.

Anyway, excited to be here, can't wait to learn a lot from you guys, thanks!

    Hi guys!!

This weekend I made my first attempt on edibles after reading the whole thread (and others) and I got to give all you guys a big thank you for all the info you've gathered here over the years!:tup:

As it was my first attempt I used a small mason jar 80% full of abv, a teaspoon of soy lecithin and i infused the coconut oil with abv for 6 hours, I used a cheesecloth to strain and it turned out a beautifully coloured oil. I have no scale, so no clue about ratios, etc, but overall I'm pretty happy with the outcome. :D

First I tried some with hot chocolate, and felt a mild body high, relaxing, but not as strong as some of you guys described. I started thinking it might be because of the fact that my ABV is usually light coloured, so maybe it wasn't as activated as it could be and I should try to cook with it instead of eating it as it was.

So the next day I made risotto ai funghi for me and my flatmates, using a bigger dose for each one of us than the one I had the day before (but not much bigger).
We all really started noticing the effects some time later, and spent a nice and relaxing saturday evening:rofl:

I asume that during the first part of the cooking the decarb completed and that can explain the effects, or maybe it was the dosage...??
I don't know... but I will surely keep experimenting :science:

    Here are a couple photos:

Thank you all again for opening this whole new world to me, you rock!

Could be one time you included a fat like cheese and butter and one time not. Eating a fat is supposed to help.

Muy buena idea @macbill, como todas tus aportaciones!! I haven't thought about it, and that could very well be the answer!

What I'm planning on doing next is an aromatised chocolate bar, with nuts and so, and will put some non-vaporized weed in the oil with the abv, decarbing both together before infusing (just to be sure all the goodies are activated).
Has anyone done anything similar? I would love some tips, as I'd like it to be a present for my girl and I'm new with edibles and confectionery :brow:

    I'll keep you posted!

    Peace

Are concentrates available to you? One of the easiest for me ('cause I need easy) ways to make chocolate, is to melt together, say, a gram of concentrate (or fraction thereof) with Tbl or so drawn butter (no milk solids) or coconut oil, cover and decarb in oven, then blend well with melted chocolate and pour out in tiny paper cupcake cups equally.

Great tip as usual @macbill !!
I have no access to concentrates, but i'm planning on pressing some kief rosin in a near future and I will have it in mind

I'll just do the abv (with some decarbed bud) coconut oil and mix it with the melted chocolate.
And I promise some photos with the results ;)

    Peace

If smell is a concern I recommend using the closed mason jar method, it only smells when you strain it ;)

BTW, I've already made a couple more batches and I keep getting nice results! Next week I'll be doing some more and try to do that aromatised chocolate

    Peace!

I use the mason jar method and it still stinks for me, but that is may be because I am afraid to completely tighten the cap.

Hey quick question. So while i was doing this method i stupidly covered the hole on my crockpot to stop the smell from escaping. I had a small amount of water in the mixture and when i came back after 20 minutes it looked like the mixture had been steaming. I quickly uncovered the hole and lowered the heat.

Did i ruin my whole batch right there by having the temperature too high for twenty minutes? Should i start over or continue?

Not at all. The oil can't go higher than boiling water (212 F at sea level). Some people even put their melted oil in simmering water so that all particulate matter settles to the bottom. Oil floats on water. Let it solidify. Doesn't ruin it at all.

I made the mistake of adding soy lecithin to my oil while it was cooking in the crockpot, and although it worked it made the oil emulsify with the water, giving me a finished oil with a significant amount of water in it. Much prefer to add the lecithin to whatever recipe at the same time the oil is added rather than adding it in to the oil. That way it still has the desired effect on digestion but I still have h2o-free oil. Just my $0.02.

Also, if anyone is looking for a faster way to infuse oil or butter, check out the thread on the "Mota Pot", which is simply a stainless stovetop espresso maker (only $10-$30 on Amazon depending on size) and can make potent butter or oil with no solids to strain in a matter of minutes.

I had great success using this method, my question is. Should I use the same exact method if I want to make coconut infused oil using top shelf medical UNVAPED bud

You will want to decarb your cannabis, 1st. Vaping or smoking cannabis converts the THC-A into THC. It is THC that has the psychoactive properties. Read about it here.

I have a question about the state of the flowers prior to decarbing.

Can I use fresh flowers, newly harvested, not dried or cured to make infused oil?

Or should it be dried and cured first?

I would think dried and cured, but really, I don't know: perhaps someone who grows can tell you.

As macbill said, dried & cured is the way.

Fresh is so much harder to process, contains so much useless matter that it takes an eternity, and results in an inferior product. By all means experiment, but I'm guessing it'll take you 5 mins to see what's what.

What do you all think about 1/3 a cup of coconut oil and 1/4 oz of whatever strain I choose, most likely one around 17% thc + 1/4 cup of ABV (mixed strains).

All of the flowers and ABV'd cannabis are from the dispensary. I'll decarb the bud and bag everything all up and put it in the Sous Vide( or crockpot) for several hours and then put it all in capsules.

Could I increase the oil to 1/2 of a cup or more since I'm using high grade? I'm thinking 00 capsules with the oil / cannabis described above would be fairly strong or too strong to start. There's nothing wrong with spreading out the doses into either smaller capsules too, I think.

The capsules would be taken for severe nausea, fatigue and appetite.
