Ascent Vaporizer by DaVinci

It's not an IR system. It's a TC system. Different animal, like used in industrial furnaces and stuff like that. You can see the sensor in the photo. A weld at the end of two fine (.010 inch) wires of special metals. Temperature (accurate to a few degrees) is measured at that exact point in the load.

I think IR systems, which basically 'listen to the color of the light' get swamped out with conflicting signals at best. Too much noise, not enough signal. Like trying to hear the guy next to you whispering into your ear, but in a room full of people talking? Even my spot meter doesn't fish out 'the right answer'.

What I did find fun was the 430 degree part. A long way from what the unit displays. Makes me wonder if we really know the temperature all that well.

Edit: The same scheme should work with Ascent, getting the leads and out might be a little more challenging, I don't have one to look at, but perhaps up through the grill?

That would be my bed guess at accomplishing that. I think the only way to get the most accurate result and remove variables is to imbed the sensor in a packed load. Without material to absorb the heat it just will dissipate. I would imagine the sensor for the ascent is situated somewhere in the ceramic or near it and is reading that temp. The IR is reading the "surface temp" of the bowl itself.

Dammit OF! I've been debating how best to get the Themocouple into the oven (screen would be ideal if I could somehow drill additional holes to compensate for restricted airflow).

Yeah... the depths of your experiments were about a hundred-fold of what I was thinking about. Nicely done, good sir!

EDIT:

Yup.

.

Maybe you can fit a wire through the empty hole on the opposite side from the charger port?

I doubt that, it would be very hard to build. My guess is the sensor is in the heater body at some specific point and is used to control the body outside the rubber gasket surrounding the ceramic cup. It will be removed from the load by the walls of the ceramic bowl and the layer of rubber on the other side of that and probably part of the heater body? They're counting on the area inside that region all being at the same temperature (as in Solo and others). Thermodynamics says that the heat will flow through the bowl, from hotter to cooler as is it's fashion, until everything within the area is basically the same temperature, just as eventually the entire turkey in the Thanksgiving oven would reach 350F (or whatever Grandma's recipe calls for).

I think IR Pyrometers have troubles measuring in this sort of case, a signal/noise problem at least? For sure nobody has reported good results that way, despite considerable efforts.

I still think a TC or thermistor buried in the actual load at the point you want to know about it is the best way to measure. That is I think my Solo experiment has given me the best measure of what's actually going on in the bud yet. I also think it could stand some more refinement and more testing before firm conclusions.

Fun stuff.

Hey well mine is working great, seems like it anyway.
I cut a mesh pad to size to fit the bowl, then I pack it nice a tight and then I place a other mesh pad fit to size of the bowl over the herb and press down for a nice fit the close the chamber.
For small bowls this works great and if I want a bit more i fill it with out the 2nd mesh pad to the top and pack it tight and close the chamber. Clouds are nice the taste is great get that tingle lol when taking draws it works very well and I don't use as much and get great results.
When I use this Ascent I can get nicely medicated and produce nice clouds comparible to the solo taste. Good if not better and with a wt it works great like I said nice clouds.

I've had worse vapes for sure still working on technique, pack, draw, temp levels to find my preferred settings for the best results for me.
Going to the doctor Tuesday so at least a have a great nit while laid up lol.

Ran mine on the ride home for a full 15 min cycle and the taste though faint is back. Cleaned the whole thing with alcohol and did a full power drain/burnoff ( set timer to 20 mins and temp to 430) and let it run till almost dead. Smell got a little better and no visable wisps. Going to do a bunch of sessions with my boy when he gets here and see what he thinks. (No real vape experience; blind taste test)

OF your post sounds so ah full of sex talk yep that is it and I am sticking to it. Just a snippit for your reading pleasure...
My guess is the sensor(tongue)is in the heater body(human) at some specific point(do I have to tell you) and is used to control the body (yep)the rubber gasket(nice, tight and lubed) surrounding the (soft)ceramic cup. It will be removed from the load by the walls of the ceramic bowl and the layer of rubber(soft skin what does OF know) on the other side of that and probably part of the heater body? They're counting on the area inside that region all being at the same temperature....HOOOOOOOOOT

@ rsqemt911 how full was your bowl and wasn't the herb spent long before the time you gave above?

I will do my write up in a bit...which means hours.

Slightly smaller than a pax load. I loaded my pax for comparison and then packed it into the ascent. Wasn't spent when I was done actually. Even brownish green. I actually have worked my pax longer than that on a drive home and gotten dark brown abv with a few dark spots on the outside. Pax puck isn't consistent color where the ascent is uniform throughout.

I didn't find that when I used a solo stems worth last night. I couldn't get any more meds out of course the vapor was gone long before that but then I took out the loop thingy and there was green in there. I put it in my INH but since it was such a small load it took only a few draws to finish but again with no visible vapor. This vape is perplexing me for various reasons.

So got a few more sessions in with the ascent and its having the pastic taste on higher temps but still performing well besides that.

Vaped some pressed kief sandwiched between cotton and set to 430. Worked very well and didn't notice the plastic taste till the end. And that was after the ascent had been on for a while and was quite warm.

Also vapes out of my extreme and solo today so my friend could try them all. Fresh faced never vaping before today he picked the ascent out of the 3 though he loved doing bags off the extreme (the novelty of it).

I didn't get to my write up sorry peeps. I was really busy with other vapes. Maybe i will do it in the middle of the night as I do most things.

Glad to hear that Ascent does well with hash :) Have you tried inside the jar ?

NON WORKING UNIT. Just received my unit from GV.

Croc skin
cosmetically pretty good, small smudge on screen.
Has a severe airleak, though none of the wires are showing. Also saw a hair(stray glue) by the dummy charge port on grill.Plug the unit in for the initial charge and nothing! No charge indicator, no power. Called DV and left a message, today started with such hope.

If you will read this thread, a few people have had units arrive without enough charge to boot. Both the charger and the batt indicator run off of the computer. It just needs enough time on mains. Let it sit throughout the day. (Also discussed in this thread: initial charge period).

I know it needs to charge for 10 hrs, figured I'd get a indicator of some sort. Hopefully it at least powers on later. It smells like new sneakers just sitting there.

Edit; There looks to be some type of liquid in the bowl. Not doing a iso scrub till it turns on though.

Mine arrived dead dead too. It took a few mins on the charger for the charge light to come on.

45 Min on charge and nothing. Hopefully @Davinci_vaporizer returns my call. The charger connection doesn't feel solid.I just pulled the cable out ever so slightly see if that helps.

Okay, so did some more burn offs. Smell seems to be decreasing. Finally tried packing it up before it gets sent back. Worked okay, with nice decent tasting vapor at sub 400F temps. But as soon as i raised the temp horrible smell and taste come back immediately even with it loaded. It just overpowers whatever is packed in.

So its definitely going back. Theres definitely potential, it seems like it wants to work great theres just too many issues right now. Bad smell, bad taste, poor assembly/construction. And many burn offs which only seem to lighten some of the issues but not resolve it. Ive never worked this hard to get a vape working properly and still failed.

For a company that has delayed a product over and over saying they want to get it right kinda has me baffled. they should have just released the vape months ago as it seems like there is more problems now then there were befoe they started fixing/tweaking things. At least I dont have any money into it as its not my unit, I just feel bad for recommending it to my friend now.

Anyway, it will probably be mailed back for an exchange. Hope they do a better QC check next go around. Will report back if it does get exchanged and ai get to try it out again

There should not be any liquid in there, obviously. The bowl does have a shiny glaze on it though. Hopefully they get all these issues worked out, it does have potential to be a great vape.
