Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Just so Dab HAppy!
the plates are not insulated. I need to find some good material to insulate from the press yet.
You can buy flat insulation plates from Low-Temp. I believe they were pretty cheap. I got one for the bottom and wish I had one for the top where the ram comes down on the plates.

@mixchu69 You can buy a PID with the heater cores that all the newer setups use from ebay or most of the kit sellers. You would just need to be able to drill the holes for the soldering irons out if they are not big enough. This is going to require a special bit and some lubricating wax so you don't burn it out. Keep it slow as steel doesnt cut/drill well at high speeds.

Shout out to the BIG homie @psychonaut for getting me back on board the rosin train!!:cheers:

Took some trim bin sift of a few different OG strains and squished at 150F for 5 minutes. here's a 3g slab of salt water taffy!

I just repressed about 6.4 grams of stacked pucks at 220F for 60 seconds and got 4% yield of some dark rosin, not very tasty but there is still THC in it. I'd say it seems about 2/3 the potency, not overly sedating. Does that yield sound about right? I did learn something here, stacking too many pucks will cause you to rip your paper. Good thing the 2nd sheet caught the rosin. The pucks this time looked severely dried out.

I've never had access to anything that looked like that, but that looks like it tastes amazing!

I've found the yield on the second press is in line with the first press. A good yield on the first press usually returns less on the second and vice versa.

I tried stacking pucks, for repressing, but it didn't work nearly as well as folding them in half for the second squeeze. But then I'm using bags for pressing.

It's kushy potent meds! Though I do feel the mix of strains actually is strong enough to muddy the flavor profile.

It's kind of difficult to work with now, it's since crumbled up and doesn't want to stick to the dabber!
I find at temps that low (below 190) the consistency does tend to crumble like that with most of the strains I've been squishing, that's why I've been squishing at 205F generally (best balance for consistency/stability I've found for these strains)

Do you think Dake 10 ton press can do 7 grams with 3x5 caged plates at 60-75% of max tonnage? What is the max sweet spot? I don't want to push the press too hard.

Also, do you think 3x5 plates are too big for 3.5-7 gram presses or are 3x3 plates better for more pressure and less surface area(not burn off terpenes)? I have seen burrito tech fold as a way to get rosin off larger plates quicker, wasn't sure if the extra 2" would make a big difference or not for smaller load presses??

I have seen that 10 ton is recommended for 3x5 plates, but also wondered if caged plates needed more force since there is resistance to push springs down?

Thanks & Peace.

That's tons of tonnage for 3.5-7 grams! Your puck size (especially bottle-tech), for that amount, will yield 1,000-1,500psi at 1 ton, so ... I typically press 5g at 1 ton yielding about 1,500 psi. I get >25% yields with the right starting material this way.

@Kind_Karma The manufacturer of my caged plates suggests 10-20 grams max for 3x5 plates paired with a 12 ton press. I think a 10 ton would be fine, having too much pressure available is not a problem, follow JCat's lead on tonnage.

The springs aren't very tight so they don't add much resistance against the press. I've done 1 gram squishes with 3x7 plates and it works fine, obviously the more material you have the better because you reduce the amount of oil sitting in the parchment between the plates. It just takes practice!

I haven't used or gotten bags before. I used a hair straightener with bench vise Paula Abdul style (Straight Up) in the parchment. With 1x2x0.75 bag, does the pressure push the rosin all the way off the plates?

Have you seen any loss of return using a bag? I like the idea of cleaner end product...thank you for recommendation.

Thanks & Peace.

I’ve been using 2x4 bags bottle tech style ... cut down to about 2x3. Makes about a 1” tall cylinder with an area of about 1.25 sq.in. (Buying from azpressco ... 160 micron)

This fits 5g and I find I get an extra % or 2 using filters than without (I’m guessing because it contains the area of the “puck”)

Nugsmasher has some good YouTube videos on how to pack bottle tech which I think is ideal for these amounts.

I am using 2x4 bags under my 3x5 plates. It’s a 10 ton press (20,000lbs). 8 square inches so if I press at 8 ton (16,000lbs) that gives 2000 psi. Of course the bag does spread a bit so it’s at least 1500 psi which is more than enough. I have been putting up to 30 gram bud in one bag but I think 15 gram gives the best results (2g bud per square inch).

OK, what's bottle tech style?

I have a 2x4 pre press mold and lately have been liking Arizona press 160 micron 2x4.5 bags in 3x5 caged plates and a 20 ton HF press. The extra 1/2 in length allows me to fold over a half inch in a four inch puck.

My bags average 10-15 grams. I have pressed as much as 22 grams in one bag, ( low temp bags that I no longer use as they're too big) but smaller bags are easier to work with, and maybe return more.

My one regret was to not get 4x7 caged plates.

Based on the nugsmasher bag sizes, bottle tech maxes out at about 14g or so with their bag size. Their 14g bags are 3” Wide, so 6” circumference, so a puck with diameter 1.9” so area of ~2.9 sq in

So ... for 14g bottle tech style, 1 to 2 tons is lots as it will yield 700-1400 psi

So really, a 2 ton press with 2” x 2” plates is lots to press up to 14g extremely efficiently with professional quality results.

(I’m using a 10ton press with 3x4 plates and never go over 1 ton to press 5g — as 1 ton is about 1500psi the way I am pressing)

@Kind_Karma Since nobody is saying anything about this, I must! Please forgive my OT. LOL, I was genuinely momentarily puzzled by the mention of PA style so you're getting top props from me! I've not really thought of Paula since her choreographer*/pop star days so the Straight Up joke really got me chuckling. This thread is so interesting and you peeps make it so enticing and yummy-looking!
And on your freakin seventh post K_K, well done! Gold Star Award! which = nuthin' btw.

*for "In Living Colour" does anyone remember this? Funny show that sadly doesn't get brought up much since it was so short-lived so no syndication deal. The actors/show got too big too fast. Now back to Rosin Technique... with our hosts @psychonaut & @JCat along with @DrRishi @Hogni & @invertedisdead
