Herb Grinders

I've been using a Space Case and MFFG to produce extremely fine grind, which is what I prefer. However, I'm honestly getting sick of how much work the MFFG is to use, and I'm considering picking up a coffee grinder so I can process a half ounce or more at a time for easy access later.

Recommendations? Anything I should know about using a coffee grinder, to keep from ruining the grinder and/or herb?

I don't think a ceramic burr coffee grinder would work. So you may want to try and find one with a blade.

Get the 2.5 size I got the 2.0 this weekend and it's very tiny for my huge hands

Well, I really wanted that SLX I had in a cart for days and days, but my 420 budget was completely busted by DynaVap. Oh well, another day... ;)

Awwww fuck it. The cart price was still good so I just went for it. Whats money when you can have toys... (And folks wonder why I'm single...) (I blame you, @Shit Snacks )

Added: Just to be clear, I blame SS for busting my budget and getting the SLX, not my being single...

Well, I got the 2" version. My hands are not huge. Hopefully it will be a good size for me. I tend to only grind a day or 2 at a time to keep it fresh, and that is under a gram for me.

Likewise, not huge hands and only grind well under a g that can last a day or two (sometimes I grind more to store for when I'm going somewhere etc.) and I still went with the large bc it's actually not very big for a large, more like a large medium, and people have said the quality isn't quite as good for the small... Plus I already had 2.2inch SCS and a tiny Piranha, nothing on the larger side yet. I guess you'll see how you like it, let us know, hopefully you have a similar experience to what I am finding because it is great. I was skeptical of the hype in here too, but really loving mine and wish I got it sooner (makes it hard to test my GR8TR more)

Yeah, well, too late. Already on the way.

Added: I suspect Randy would let me send it back if I felt it was too small when it came as long as I haven't used it, but I think the 2" should be fine.

I've used one of these:

Tefal GT203840 Coffee Grinder with Twin Cutting Stainless Steel Blades, 75 g Capacity
£19

31PyBnyiALL._SY400_.jpg

I used to tear up the bud into Malteser sized chunks and grind 3 times for about 3 seconds per turn.

Dry well cured herb would turn to dust.

Slightly damp herb would still grind to a fine level but I did get the odd lump here or there.

I stopped using it for herb as I now use vapes that do better with a more coarse grind. I was also concerned that the grinder was knocking a lot of the trichomes off of the bud. I'd get a lot of Kief collecting around the grooves, blade and lid which I'd then have to scrape off.

Also, large quantities of finely ground herb doesn't keep as well as non ground herb.

I mostly use the Grinder now to dust up AVB before a coconut oil infusion.

I now grind a small bud (3-5 days worth) by hand using a two piece.

I hear you on the MFFG, great result if you like fine grind but lots of effort.

Whilst the electric coffee grinder with destroy most stems it will not sift them out like the MFFG. Figured that was worth bearing in mind.

WOW!!! Just got my SCS replacement!!! :D:D:D And what a surprise! New serrated teeth, gunmetal in place of my old black one and 3-pc instead of my 4-pc!!!:rockon::rockon:

SCS was kind enough to replace it without even asking for my old one back or maybe just wanted to get rid of an outspoken client who was about to start nagging!!! :p Anyway kudos to them!!! When I first got my SCS I don't remember reading anything about limited lifetime warranty covering only broken teeth and not scratching but after 2-3 years my SCS started developing some bad burr around the top part and it sure wasn't my fault. Bad tolerances maybe or bad paint material? Don't have the pics now as my phone is in for service but I'll post them asap... I witnessed fine aluminum dust when cleaning and I sent SCS a message which they never answered back. Then I remembered I got it from Planet Vape so I sent PV a message explaining the problem with the pics included. PV answered back that they can't do anything cause this issue wasn't covered by the warranty. I immediately sent another mail to SCS with pics this time telling them what I told you above and that I had many friends who loved it and got one or two, locally as well as in here and that I would hate having to say negative staff about an otherwise great product and that I thought it was probably a bad batch! Two days later I get a mail from SCS asking me what my address is. Nothing more... :uhh: I sent my address back asking if I can have a 3-pc instead maybe even gunmetal or green and a couple of weeks later the gunmetal 3-pc beauty is here!!!
No herbs in hand to try the new amazing and super sharp and pointy serrated teeth but something tells me it will be even better than the OG!!!
Lets see if this one holds for a bit longer!!! Pics when my phone is back from service! Anyone else got the new teeth???

EDIT: Hmmmm ,I think it's a silver one unpainted I think, after all, maybe better... :p

EDIT2: Nahhh, scrap this, it's grey I think, silver looks to be lighter coloured in their site but grey looks much darker. Mine looks like something in between, do you think they sent me a beta colour?

You ask if anyone else has this teeth pattern, but how are we to know what exact changes you are referring to without a picture?

Yes I've mentioned the new teeth here when I got my new gunmetal three piece vs my old black four piece as well, and yeah color looks different in different lighting, can't even go by photos really, someone else posted a photo too

Ah I missed the half ounce or more bit, but I have a Space Case and when I want extra fine I just turn it upside down. Pretty powdery.

I'd like a 3 piece SCS sometime but I've had my Space Case since November 14 and it works just like when I got it, albeit screen is a bit clogged with kief. I have an ID Grinder too that produces a bit courser of a grind for a year, been set for awhile. Wouldn't of got the ID one either but won it, glad I did cause a bit of variety is nice.

Well, you would understand if you had the serrated teeth... :p @Shit Snacks obviously has and yeahI willpost pics once I am able to... :) Teeth are thiner as well and the grip is obviously less pronounced than the OG but I have no problem twisting. Things might change once a sticky bud finds its way in there. The new grip is more beautiful though.
Vape critic has a review by the way, no need to wait for my pics! :D

EDIT: The screens in his shredders definitely looks coarser than my old one, I wouldn't like that, glad I asked for a 3-pc instead.

Well, if the "quality isn't as good" what will be a bummer, but I just measured the size of the grinder I have been using for years now and it is only 2 1/8" so I'm sure the 2" one will be fine as long as it grinds well. And, of course, the ceramic coating is the primary feature and draw.

Straight up guys just buy a SLX & stop fucking about. It is worth every penny & then some. Looks like @Shit Snacks is seeing the light .
This is what I've been saying. Since I've gotten my SLX, it's been a game changer. I did 100s of hours of research to find a better grinder than the SCS and this is what I settled on. I NEVER use my SCS anymore.

I was completely torn on SLX or Space Case, believe me. The clincher for me was hearing that SLX have reduced the height of the side walls in the slide-out tray on newer SLX 2.0s, and this has caused there to be more of a rattle than with earlier releases. Prior to hearing about this seemingly unnecessary change to the tray, I was going with SLX. Now it's Space Case all the way.
This is a nonissue for me for anyone wondering. The "rattle" is negligible. You definitely would prefer the slideout trade to be easy to take out than perfectly snug. My opinion anyway.
Haha yeah I mean I saw it before, fortunately I get to try the GR8TR without any investment, but I am definitely very glad I invested in the SLX and it was a great deal since I had an Amazon gift card.

The coating seems fine to me, but I am being careful. You don't need to poke stuff out though so no risk scratching it like that, things wipe right off or you can even blow away any dust in threads or hard to reach spots. Almost the entire load ends up in the tray even when grinding upside down. I can do course, I can do fine, I can do medium all evenly, feels like grinding as it should be...

You can remove the sifter in the SLX and it is a three piece. I don't filter kief and don't ever plan to, aside from being short without as much to grip as GR8TR or even SCS three piece, it turns super smooth with great teeth and holes so that doesn't seem to be an issue yet.

Again still early, but SLX is such a winner for me while the GR8TR is pretty disappointing (btw I've gotten my plate screwed tight, it doesn't matter, with herbs in there and turning the wrong way it still unscrews. Definitely don't wanna have to dry my herbs just to grind!)
I ended up not picking up the GR8TR. I started using my second SLX, and I'm just so happy using both of them that I decided to wait. Also, yes that's known that it gunks up. That's why I got the SLX. Even if you put bud in that slightly makes it "dirty", keep grinding bud through it. It will "clean" itself out with the other bud you grind through it.
I like research, so I did 100s of hours of it before I decided the SLX was the grinder that really truly impressed me.
I have to say I was hesitant to recommend the SLX immediately after my issue with the coating. However, my replacement has seen even more use over a longer period of time than the first one, with better and stickier material, and the coating is still holding up well. I feel comfortable recommending it based on the performance of my replacement. The customer service was also top notch.

The only issue I have with the SLX is that it doesn't deal with the ultra sticky 26%+ stuff I get as well as the Ti Space Case does. I prefer the grind quality and feel/design of the SLX, but when it locks up it is frustrating.

These are extreme edge cases though. Many people will probably never have an SLX stick, or at least it will take quite some time. And it's still probably the second best after the Ti Space Case in regards to sticking, as far as my limited reading of reviews of various grinders goes.

The SLX is probably the best as far as kief sticking to the grinder, or as I like to call it "static cling". The Ti Space Case collects a bit of kief in the top two compartments. The SLX collects virtually zero kief anywhere except the bottom kief chamber, and of course the screen itself does get clogged over time just like any other screen. Kief just slides off that coating though, it's kind of beautiful how it doesn't really cling to the top two pieces at all.

If using it as a three piece I would even venture to guess that the SLX will give a bump to the potency of your material as the trichomes will stick to the plant matter instead of your grinder. That's just a hypothesis though, don't quote me on that. Unless I'm right lol...

The coating issue I had as well and after chatting with SLX, they not only sent a replacement but explained that it was not harmful in anyway in normal vaping conditions which was nice.

The initial turn can be hard, I agree, that's due to all of the teeth. It's hard to turn, but that doesn't remotely bother me personally. It's also because the SLX can grind less bud at a time, so you may just want to grind the first part through, and then the second part, instead of all at once. It's hard to get used to how much bud you can grind int eh large SCS compared to the SLX. If you already had a small grinder like the "large" slx 2.0 then you're ok.

The main reason I got it was the kief/sticking. IT stays clean. The SCS got so dirty and nasty I just got fed up with all the kief that would get caked all around the grinder. The SLX has now a lot of time used for me, and none of this issue.

If the GR8TR grinder had this ceramic coating, then I would be more inclined to get it.

Hey man thanks for posting this! I am delighted to hear the "rattle" is negligible. My only reason for caring about this arose from watching a video which had me completely convinced to buy it:
After I watched this I noticed that the vid uploader/reviewer had added some later updates in the comments section about his discovery of a newer version of the SLX2 with this rattle. I am pretty certain that I will end up with both the SC and the SLX2, the SLX2 looks like it is perfect size for visiting friends/going camping etc, while the SC will be my living room grinder. SLX definitely seem to really appreciate the value of great customer service (just like InterplanetaryTanner :) - the SW2 looks really nice too...grinder decisions are torturous!), which is yet another reason to go with them. So again, cheers for the post :)

ETA - I emailed SLX about the top-to-bottom height of the 2.4" SLX2, and they replied that it was 1.5 inches tall. This seems a tad short to me, especially compared to the video above. It looks to me like it is 2 inches tall or more in this dude's hand...Can you do a quick measurement of it's height if you get a chance? Or if anyone else already knows. Cheers!

When I get home I'll look at that video and measure the height.

I will say it looks small. Look at my video of the SCS next to my slx. The thing looks tiny and the height is short. It all works well in use though. Its advertised as a more compact grinder and delivers on this.

As you said it's great for travel.

For home use? Space case or gr8tr would be nice for the quantity you can grind at once.

I don't use my scs personally for this. I don't see the added benefit of grinding slightly more bud at once, for the cost of losing Kief and other bud getting stuck in the grinding section of my grinder.

So i been using my Kannastor Gr8tr with the vape plate and it has been very successful with a fluffy fine grind every time and has given me 0 problems so far but i just started getting into NewVapes products after ordering the flowerpot vape from them and after seeing how their products just scream quality in almost every way to me i received the Titanium fine grinder and it looks amazing in person , it turns the easiest out of any grinder i have tried so far and ill be putting it to the test this weekend.

So ya, just let me know!

I'm starting to post a lot more videos/instagram photos. Major thing is just learning to edit my videos. I've got a lot of video content to post, got to edit them first. Appreciating how much effort it takes to make this stuff now.

Definitely keep it up with the vids man! Did you get a chance to measure the height of the SLX2? It's really not that important, just my borderline OCD need to know small details heheh!

Yeah man that's what I was afraid of for you, wish you would have consulted me first! Definitely see about exchanging, they might make it worthwhile for you... Sucks though

Yeah the 2.4inch size of the standard SLX2.0 is actually not large at all, and kind of perfect really since I can load my preferred modest amount and grind with ease having some extra room on the sides (so even less likely to build gunk or lock up) so I think it's pretty perfect
