Whip Tubing - All Your Questions Answered!

I meant to say before, when I posted the Lamart link above, that I actually use a short length of fatter silicone tubing with the same inner diameter as the outer diameter of the whip tubing as a sleeve that acts as an adapter for my glass pieces (and retains the the full internal diameter of the whip tubing)

Hey guys, I want to get a new whip for my Arizer EQ. The current hose seems like a tricky pain to remove from the stock adapter and knocks everything around it over.

I’m thinking maybe Silicone with a braided wrap to prevent dust build up and a mini bubbler mouthpiece if that exists.

Any suggestions on which materials to use? Ideally I’d love one that can safely be cleaned with ISO.

If it can be ordered via Amazon in the USA, even better but not required.

Sadly I forgot what type of silicone I used for my other thinner whip, so any help is more than appreciated.

I've used this tubing from Amazon for the EQ and it works great IME.

Oh thank you! The tubing I bought for the Evo is way too stiff. I have had some near calamities with that stiff tube whipping around. I've must have asked Vapehunter 5 times what tubing to get but I was high so I forgot. I was getting embarrassed to ask again.

Are there any tubing options to make them look a little nicer like on hookahs?

Try searching for combinations of expandable, braid, electrical sleeving, cable sheathing
There's loads to choose from in different materials, sizes and styles
Ebay have a section just for cable sheath - https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Cable-Sheath/26213/bn_7023510422
Searching for braided cord, lace cord, piping cord, shoelace cord ... will give you some more options but they don't usually say the internal dimension of the cord in the ads so there's usually a bit of guess work or trial and error involved to find the right size

Do you have one? It's very easy to measure with a good fine ruler. I just measured my small globe with Simrell cage that way and the tubing I ordered in that size worked fine. And it had a higher quality "feel" to it.

I've seen a lot of discussion about cleaning with a lot of people who seem convinced that you can't clean the tubing at all, the most frequently listed reason being that you allegedly cannot run alcohol through this type of tubing (food safe heat resistant tubing for brewing).

I am having difficulty with the idea that they would sell tubing for brewing that wouldn't stand up to alcohol. I will certainly ask when buying. I don't use isopropyl for reclaim. I personally prefer Tuaca. I rinse out my stems by putting some Tuaca in there and shaking it up until it dissolves. Actually that is the OLD way of doing it, these days I've got a small capacity bottle that is about 6.5" high and a mouth wide enough that I can drop a 3/4" UD Alpha glass stem right in there (as well as all other small glass stems that I have which are smaller) and let it sit while the resin magically dissolves into the Tuaca, which I then use to make near-khoa.

Cook cream until it thickens, the khoa stage would be full-on fudge, with this I stop while it is extremely thick but still some what liquidy. Then I dump that and all its resiny Tuaca-y goodness into a cup of tea and it is DELICIOUS. Well not all of it, a great big dollop at a time. Then I sleep very well and soundly, as was my goal LOL!

I have decided that a vinegar rinse after the Tuaca might be a good idea (going forward, at least for my stems if not the tubing). So Tuaca to dissolve the resin, then a vinegar rinse (accomplished with little further effort from me by getting another tall skinny bottle just for a vinegar soak). Then a final wash with soap and water (for glass) or just really good rinse with plain water (for silicone tubing). And the dry stage of course. Not a problem when you live in the desert.

And then spend a little time thinking of what you could do with cannabis infused vinegar. Not sure how much weedy goodness would infuse in to vinegar, but if it dissolves the visible resin it must be in the vinegar. Could make for some exciting salads down the line ... Especially if you've just vinegar-cleaned several feet of tubing, especially especially if the alcohol step has to be skipped for silicone tubing.

Food for thought ...

Yeah there are things to consider about how to clean 3' of silicone tubing vs 6" of glass stem. There are several methods that could be adapted to a 3' long piece of tubing but I won't take up space describing them - think of the time saved if I really CANNOT run some Tuaca through the whip. Mechanics isn't the issue at the moment though.

But back to the alcohol-through-tubing thing. *shrug* we'll see what they say at the brew supply place.

But even if it is true - no Tuaca in tubing for me - you can still clean them. Ignoring various ways of making partial reclaim (like a vinegar rinse), for heaven's sake, just run them through a PBW wash. That's what the stuff is made for - cleaning weird nooks and crannies and hard to reach places and TUBING in all the ins and outs of your brewing equipment. Did I mention that includes the tubing? It'll be clean, 100%. PBW will not damage your tubing but it will clean it. If you're going to toss it and lose all that reclaim anyway, why not just clean it out right and proper to start with? At least you'll save the $10 to $40 people seem to be paying for a new whip LOL!

So I have a question about tubing that seems perhaps a bit more general than most on here. I plan to get some silicone food safe heat resistant tubing soon from a local brew supply shop. I'm making a whip for my UD (and hopefully it will also work with a HI, but I won't have one to test for some while yet).

I've settled on a 3' length, but what effect does the ID of the tubing have? I could go with either 3/8" or 1/2" (ID) for the whip tubing. Does it make a difference in practice?

it plays a big part in that it determines if the actual whip will fit on whatever you are trying to put it on.
If the ID is too small even tho silicone will stretch some it might not fit.

if it’s too large you can’t create a seal and the vapor might escape also the whip might not stay on whatever you have it on.

the OD is more so about the thickness of the tubing

So I've got a question that brings me out of my lurking. What's the ideal type of tubing (silicone, vinyl/PVC) and how do you tell if it's food/medical grade?

A week ago I did some google research on silicone. I don’t have the time to write all that I learned, so I suggest looking it up for the details.

One link I have for testing is:

If you research on BURN TESTING silicone you will learn the differences on silicone types. I recently bought my first silicone whip for vaping. (Used silicone hoses for cleaning for years). The one from Herbolizer has glass connections and is long, and TOP QUALITY SILICONE.

I RECOMMEND THIS:

Good luck, avoid cheap PVC!

HAH, just realized I just responded to a question post from 10 years ago, sorry if it’s TOO LATE!!! :)

Making it fit is 0 problem. I can fit a piece of 3/8" OD tubing on to a 3/4" OD stem (and vice versa), via strategic tube stacking. Lots of ways to fit, only some of which require any stretching or wiggling - and I can even avoid that little bit if I use more pieces of tubing.

I'm only concerned with how the tubing size (ID) affects the draw.

LARGER ID = INCREASED AIRFLOW

True. But you can have too MUCH airflow. I found that with the Alpha UD, it works way better if I restrict the airflow by using a piece of silicone as an airlock at the tip of the stem. It fits over the heater core and while I call it an "airlock" it doesn't really restrict draw or "lock" or seal the airway, but it does concentrate the draw up through the center of the core instead of allowing air to be pulled in from all over. It practically eliminates hot-spotting.

But I get it - you prefer 1/2" over 3/8". As long as its not too open (like the Alpha dog) I'm good.
